We had our Reading Group meeting this morning.
We meet at the local library and the library get the books for us.-not literally but you know what I mean! - and provides the kettle and boiling water for drinks and we bring our own mugs and we have a kitty to pay for biscuits milk ,teabags and coffee.
There is quite a good range of books
    We meet once a month.
We make choices as to which books we would like and sometimes if the book is very popular we have to choose something else.
There are 10 of us - we range in age from mid 60s to mid to late 80s.There are 9 women and 1 man.

Then we say whether we would recommend the book in question
Two people actually read all of "Never let me go " .
Most of the marks were either 2 or 3 out of 10 .
    Nobody recommended it.
    The meeting ended early!
Next month's book is Jane Austen's "Emma".

“Emma” was one of my books for A level English, which sort of ruined it for me!
But strangely suitable seeing that I was in Austen House at school, have ended up living next to the village where Jane Austen was born, and had children who went to school in Oakley Hall where Jane had attended balls and assemblies. Our whole area is dedicated to Jane Austen with the council erecting a statue of her in the centre of town and her name on every signpost welcoming you to Basingstoke.

I had a lovely morning yesterday visiting cowgirl for a long overdue catch up. We really put the world to rights. Came home with half a dozen eggs, she has chickens, and a bag of home made biscuits for husband. Had a call in at sainsburys and b and m on the way home. Really quiet. Had a good look round. My first solo trip since op. Freedom at last. 😊

I’m now enjoying Cairns, having whistled through New Zealand, which was fabulous, had a few days in Melbourne, got soaked on one day, now in Queensland with rain forecast for our trip up to the rain forest tomorrow and possibly following us down to Ulruru and Alice Springs, it will make the colours brighter, but the stars less visible.

  8. As promised here is my method for gaining re entry to the blog.

I suggest anyone interested should screen shot, or take a photograph of my instructions for future use should it be necessary.

In the past I have googled the following :-

    Archers fan blog spot
I usually then get a picture of the blog from a few years back when GG was still running the site.

I go into that page and scroll through until I come across a post from KP NUTS
Often this may take a lot of scrolling, be patient.
Sometimes I might need to go to the next blog.

When KP Nuts post is found, click on her profile.
This will take you to her blogs. There are two.
Click on the archers fan blog.

You should now be shown the current blog.

    RESULT I hope.

However when I tried this before writing this post, I found that the current blog came up in google, which renders my method redundant.
Nevertheless I would urge people to keep this method to hand as I have found it useful on several occasions when I have inadvertently deleted my ARCHERS pages.

    I hope this is helpful.
I must advise that I have an Apple IPad.
I do not know if this would work in the same way on any other device.

    Good luck Janice.

My Gander is a bit naughty, though he will no longer go for me ! He has attacked Lucia my dachshund on a few occasions, but he hasnt learnt his lesson and still thinks about going for her, despite her getting the better of him on two occasions needing intervention from me . I do understand about the cows; on our dairy farm my husband and his 2 brothers ( all in their 70s and 2 nearer to80) love their cows - we’re a closed herd so all of them have been bred on the farm, Arthur knows them each of them - all three brothers hate the prospect of losing the cows so on we go……….

    1. Yes indeed Mrs P the local paper is on it once again! It’s crazy we are awash here right now with building and applications and this particular area will probably get permission in the end and it is very near Chawton.
It is stated the builders will incorporate a school but what about another Health Centre the 3 A31 practices are bursting at the seams now with the general public and the many retirement blocks and nursing homes to cover!

      Delete
    2. It's the same in my area. There are so many developers putting in applications for new housing developments, mostly on green belt land.
Who will he buying all these new properties as they are far from starter homes and affordable housing.
When I bought my first property, it was a new build and the whole development were starter homes of various types, either one or two bedroomed.
The buyers were either singles like myself or young couples just starting out..
My little house was just one bedroom, so was more like a flat on two floors but the bedroom was large with built in wardrobes. Downstairs I had a L-shaped lounge diner and a separate kitchen.
It served me well for about 5yrs and I made a good profit when I sold it.
These types of starter homes are just not built these days but these are needed at an affordable price.

  17. I made a Spag.Bol last night, so what.
The reason I'm mentioning this is that I used 500g of 5% Pork Mince which was just £2.55. I did my usual recipe, all I did differently was to add in some extra Italian blend herbs and half an oxo cube.
It was delicious and way cheaper.
To add I use a Sainsbury's own brand chunky vegetable pasta sauce, again cheap + cheerful but tasty.
I also bought a pack of own brand cannelloni tubes (35p) so it obvious what I'll be doing next, to go into the freezer!
I might look at costs for my own meals, but Pusscat always has what she likes best - I have the priorities right. 🐈‍⬛

But the very sad news is that her health has worsened. The brain tumour is unstoppable and her pain relief has been upped. it has affected her sight and hearing, in a relatively mild way then, but I don't know the situation now. She said she finds emailing increasingly tiring and I don't want to encroach on her energy reserves when there are more important claims on her attention. We have said what we needed to say. I hope you don't mind my mentioning it here.
I watched Newsnight on Thursday evening and mention was made about Hospices being desperate for money.
Very soon we pensioners will be getting a Christmas bonus of £10.
The money appears in the pensioners Bank Accounts .
Many pensioners do not realise they get the money.
To the majority of pensioners £10 is not a great deal of money and would not be missed ,especially if they don't realise they get that money so maybe they could donate the £10 to their local hospice
I am in the process of contacting various people and organisations to see if they would help publicise my idea.
If anybody you is interested I will tell you how get on !

    1. Thanks Mrs P.
We all have our favourite Charities and I would not think of asking someone to give extra unless they felt like it.
My main point was that many people don't even know they get the £10 so those people won't miss it and the Hospices do desperately need the money .

    2. May I say again that I am not asking everyone of pensionable age to give up the £10.
What anyone chooses to donate to any Charity is none of my business
I was suggesting that if people were unaware of the fact that we old folk get £10 a year -(the amount is the same as when the scheme first started 51years ago) - then they might like to donate it to their local Hospice since they would not miss something they were not expecting to have.

He also changed my diuretic back to one I had taken for 40 odd years, so I am no longer rushing to the loo every five minutes and having ‘accidents’. I still cannot walk for more than a very few yards, get incredibly tired, sleep a lot during the day, but I *feel* better. And I am no longer frightened to check my BP fearing it will be over 200. 39. AP that is good news. I suspect that as your blood pressure settles down, you will gain more energy and gradually extend your range of walking. But as you say, you ‘feel’ better and that is more important than anything.
Mrs P everything crossed that your sleep patterns adjust so that you can use those important hours of daylight. Are you going to bed earlier and if so, can you get to sleep? I ask because I have always been a night owl and if I go to bed earlier, I often lie awake for ages.

    1. I go to bed earlyish and I get to sleep by putting my ear buds om and listening to something via Sounds whilst being snuggled down with the lights off.
I nearly always come to later with ear buds still in as fell asleep whilst listening.
A quick loo trip then straight back to sleep!
As such am always awake by 6.30am, but that doesn't mean I get up.
It's down to make a cup of tea, then straight back to bed, again putting the radio on this time listening properly.

I have always been a night owl, and never minded being so, but I could always sleep and without any problems, until the trigger in 1998.
I usually get to bed sometime between 11.30 and one.
I then toss and turn for hours and hours. And it’s not that I’m not tired. Some nights I ache with tiredness.
On occasion I’m so exhausted that I will be in bed by eight in the evening, as I did one night last week.I finally fell asleep at six thirty the following morning.
I’ve had a very productive day today, including a big supermarket shop.

    8. Point taken Miriam but it is perhaps wisest to ask the G P first, although my experience is that it is a rare doctor who has much knowledge of such matters. They can and do look up interactions online which is basically the same as a sensible person would do first anyway. At one time we had a really good pharmacist at our local chemist and his knowledge of such things was excellent, more than the doctor I think.

    9. Janice -remember I am a retired pharmacist.
An example - a regular of mine loved herbal remedies which I spoke to her about. She disappeared and was in hospital after a stroke. On discharge l received a copy of her meds. the same as the GP.
One month later a prescription appeared for this lady, which I blocked releasing, until I had a chat.
She decided not to take half of what the hosp. prescribed but I could see this was already detrimental. She gone back to her herbal products, two of which were red flag one's.
Long story short, she thought she new best and died from a massive stroke just 3 months later.
Neither the GP nor self could persuade her otherwise we'd had meetings about this.
Yes, an extreme example I know.

    10. Apologies for relating to my experience in such a way, as I was helpless although I tried.
My point has to be, just be careful with taking both herbal + vitamin/mineral supplements, which vary in strengths so much.
Are these helpful or detrimental - that's not always known.

He likes the staff especially the young ladies 😉 and they get on well together. It’s hard to explain exactly how things are because his mood and memory can vary day by day. He is calling me by name and for the most part really pleased to see me each day. He enjoys the jolly music entertainment they have had recently, and today a pet dog called Athos a year old Golden Labrador visited us in George’s room. 43. Mrs P I am sure you have tried the following but these so far have worked for me.
    1) A yoga teacher told me that when you go to bed you must "switch off" .
Don't think about what you have to do the next day or what you did on that day -just switch off.
If you can't do that then you should say 10 times "Don't think".
    It does work.
    2) Doctor son says if you wake during the night and can't go back to sleep then you should get up and either make yourself a cup of tea or just walk round for a bit.
    I find that works too.
    3) When Mr LJ was in hospital I asked the Consultant if I could bring him in some whisky because he always had "a wee dram" when he went to bed.
Unfortunately it was during the Covid period so I wasn't allowed to take anything into the hospital but the lovely Consultant said he would get a bottle for him. (He wouldn't take payment so I gave the money to a Charity of his choice) .
I often have a small glass before I go to bed -usually around 11pm- and I reckon it helps .
These suggestions may not work for you .
I have always been a lark rather than an owl .

I’ve recently bought a bottle and tried the whiskey remedy.
      Didn’t work.
I don’t think when I go to bed, and rarely reflect on my day or what’s ahead.
Once asleep, if I wake, I always get back to sleep without any problem, including if it’s a bathroom visit.
Often, if it’s many hours tossing and turning, I do get up and have warm milk and cheese. Sometimes it works.

Despite less than four hours sleep last night, I was awake just before phone call from daughter at around eight. So a good start to today.

My SinL is on his way home from the Cop in Brazil now.
Apparently everyone was evacuated from the fire and nobody hurt.

  52. I am tapping away on this with one eye closed. On Saturday I had one cataract done and so far am finding it hard to adjust to the eyes being different. The nurse said to knock out the glasses lens on the side of the done eye but at present I feel safer still keeping their eye protector on and the glasses won't fit over the top. Because this first one had been put back it is only going to be a fortnight before having the second one done. Just as well it is winter as apparently gardening and bending over and lifting bags of compost etc are not to be done at present.
Christmas is going to be chaotic this year. My daughter was very keen for us to have a family trip to the christmas markets of Vienna and Prague over her birthday in December. With eye drops to go in 4 times a day that is going go be a right faff. I would have been more than happy to stay at home. And then a good friend from north Wales who lost her husband 2 years ago has asked if she can come for christmas because her own family are having a very big gathering this christmas and the last big family occasion she just kept crying because everybody else had their husbands and children with them ( she couldn't have children) and she felt so lonely. She has a very lively Springer Spaniel and I am trying to arrange it so my two elderly cats don't have a miserable christmas. I think I will reinstate the safety gate at the bottom of the stairs that used to be there for Max. That way the cats can retreat upstairs.
Everything seems to be happening at once. I wonder if I could get away with not writing cards this year!

Would your daughter consider re ordering her European Christmas Market trip for next year. It does sound like an overload of activities in one month.
And it really is important to avoid those tasks requiring exertion post cataract operation.
I do remember how frustrating it was.

    3. Thank you Miriam. My son has managed to get it out but am still wearing the eye protector at present as afraid of bumping it or having little lively Max hit it, and the glasses won't fit on top.
I so agree with your last sentence. Everything is bright and white out of my done eye, while out of my left eye everything has a yellowish tinge. I must have been walking around in a yellow haze without realising. My lovely optician who wasn't that old died before covid and I hadn't had another eye appointment until this Springl

      Delete
    4. Mrs P can't really alter it now, as it is organised and paid for ( daughter's 40th birthday). Wasn't really expecting the eye ops before christmas. Should have been done last Spring but the place the nhs sent me to ( they are trying to cut down their waiting lists) said they couldn't do it because I have a ( slight) tremor and arthritis in the neck and I would need to be sedated so my head didn't move and on an adjustable bed. So that meant hospital, and I had been so concerned over what the other place said about my head needing to be absolutely still etc that I took the plunge and splashed out on the private hospital, and once that decision had eventually been made the appointments came a lot quicker than I realised they would.

Some of you may remember Mr LJ died during Covid so I spent Christmas alone .
Well not quite l alone I had Poppy and Percy the cats.
I ate what I wanted when I wanted to
I watched what I wanted on TV.
Friends and family phoned me .
I honestly believe I would have felt more alone had I been with friends in a happy family atmosphere
As regards your eyes Janice I think different Hospitals tell patients different things to do or not to do.
The only things I did was to use baby shampoo for the first few weeks.
I didn't do any gardening and I bought a small lightweight kettle !
    Still using it.
I bought a pair of cheap reading glasses from Amazon and they sufficed until 6weeks after I I had second eye done .
The main thing I noticed was that everything appeared bluer .
A lovely coral dress was actually shocking pink.

It is only now that one of my eyes has been done that I have realised exactly how bad my sight was. Everything is brighter and lighter through that eye now. I think it must creep up gradually. I used to have annual check ups but my lovely optician died about a year before covid, and it wasn't until March this year that I thought perhaps I had better find another optician, and then had a shock when she said if I wanted to go on driving my eyes had to be done. Being able to drive here in a rural area with no buses is important, and it means independence.
For quite a time I have regarded a jacket I have as being green and my daughter was adamant it was grey!

    2. As for being a Saint you wouldn't think I was at present, as am truly exasperated just now. About a month ago I said to my daughter (knowing her ability to never put things back in their place) you do know where your passport is don't you? Yes yes, of course I do, it will be in my bedroom somewhere... and when I asked after that it was stop fussing mum.
So now, after getting my son on the case, she turned her room, in a pickle as usual, upside down yesterday afternoon and can't find it anywhere. She has today off work and will continue looking. Fingers crossed it must be there somewhere because she had it earlier in the summer when she went out with her brother to the Philippines. The one good thing is that her room is having the best clear out it has had in years! Every cloud ....

I have been interested in the acting careers of some of the actresses who were in it, especially Stephanie Cole. She has become a favourite, and also Stephanie Beecham and Anne Bell. It was a real insight into what happened to women stuck out there during the war, as was The Bridge Over the River Kwai, for the men

    3. I saw an odd episode on ITV3 but despite the cast, it wasn't to my taste, though I appreciated the subject of it.

  64. The Christmas present for Big Sis + Hubbie arrived today. I hadn't planned of ordering it so soon, but there was a Black Friday extra which I thought was worth it.
This is a cheese hamper - 5 cheeses, 2 chutneys + crackers. The extra was a pack of 3 chutneys FOC. It arrived beautifully packed in the hamper with an ice block to keep it cold.
What I forgot about is that the cheeses now have to be stored in my fridge until Christmas.
I totally detest the stuff, but they are waxed so there's no smell!
I didn't think this through properly!

    1. To add buying early was actually OK, as use-by dates are May + June next year.

    2. If you have a garden shed Miriam you could store the whole hamper, cheese an all in there until Christmas, save clogging up your refrigerator.

    3. My shed is long gone and not yet replaced. . Luckily my fridge is never that full except for my 2 veg. drawers.

  65. We had an enjoyable evening yesterday at the RHS Bridgewater Glow event. Luckily it was dry and mild and not too crowded and I got some lovely photos. The only downside was the horrendous traffic on the way there, mainly because the motorway goes past the Trafford Centre where I presume people were busy with Christmas shopping.

    1. Sounds an idyllic event.
Is it just me, or does Christmas seem to be starting early this year?
I suppose though, the November pay has just gone into bank accounts, as my pension has just done .🤣🤣

    2. CC - I wish I had known about the Glow event at RHS Bridgewater. One of my friends and I meet there sometimes and I would have enjoyed it.

Miriam - I feel that Christmas is starting sooner these days, as soon as Bonfire night is over then the television ads seem to start for Christmas but I ignore them until the first week in December.
People have only so much money to spend on Christmas presents and encouraging them to buy more is irresponsible. Who wants to be paying for it well into the new year - certainly I don’t. However, I buy gifts throughout the year whenever I see something suitable for
friends and relatives, even when I’m on holiday.

    2. Not sure I'll be. My original DID were my firm favourite music choices, so if I do another it just would be 2nd choices which won't be as heartfelt.
I thought long + hard about my music choices then, which was made so the more meaningful as it was the pandemic, when emotions + feelings were so different.

    3. I will put my name forward but I understand that people who’ve done it before aren’t interested. I was locked out of the blog at that time so didn’t take part in it before.

    4. My music choices would be the same or very similar, but if people don't mind getting the same again I would do it. My only problem is that my next cataract removal is the end of this week and until the temporary reading glasses come through the post I probably won't be reading or using my tablet. I am rushing try to get some cards written this week using the not done eye. Then on the 9th we are, hopefully, off on our adventure. Perhaps leave me to the end KP.

    1. And me! As for having same choices as last time, I don’t think for one minute anyone will remember exactly who chose what, so don’t be worried about second choices or repetition.

  68. I remember in the past someone else ( Archerfile?) said they enjoyed using the Jacquie Lawson animated card site, which resulted in me looking it up and subscribing. This year I sent their animated advent calendar with different activities in it to someone as a Christmas present, and also treated myself. Set in an idyllic snowy country village it is a fun lead up to Christmas, and a counterbalance to the present Archers angst.

Janice. I believe I sent one a long time ago and the recipient said they could not open it but probably them 🫢

    2. I wasn't sure how to download it so your friend is not alone! My son did it for me. I think nowadays 9younger people brought up with computers are more tech savvy.

  71. Janice, it was me who always downloaded the Jacqui Lawson advent calendar & also sent it to grandsons too. However, did not renew my subscription this year, hope it’s not too late.

On another subject I have been listening to a 5 part series on Radio 4Xtr which I really enjoyed. It is called ‘60 Degrees North’ by Malacy Tallack who lives in Shetland. As a boy he was fascinated by the fact that Shetland is on the same latitude as St Petersburg, and longed to visit. Eventually he travels all around the world at 60 degrees N including Canada. He ends up in Bergen, Norway where he gets his final ferry home. There are only 5, 15 minute episodes which are A delightful listen and episodes are still available.

  72. To cricket lovers - thank goodness Root has achieved 100+ runs in Australia and just when they really needed someone to stay calm and not give their wicket away!!!!! Aggers sounded quite cross with Brook in particular. I think so much of our modern game is focussed on scoring fast and furious with no thought of defence, that our young batsmen just think of hitting 6s or 4s whatever the risk.
    Well done Root🏏🏏
