ArcherphileJune 4, 2023 at 3:50 PM Hello All Back home from the Baltic - visited 5 Countries and 7 Cities, all with beautiful weather and via very calm seas. Shan’t bore everyone with all the news except to say I suffered really badly from swollen legs and feet throughout the cruise ( may be due to the BP drugs) and could only wear slippers the whole time, even ashore. Just couldn’t squeeze into anything else. Very painful and itchy. Then I have also developed severe shortness of breath on walking just a few yards and end up bent over and wheezing like a Grampus! Shall be making a GP appointment tomorrow. But the places we visited were beautiful, seen from a tour bus, and the Scandinavian Capitals are so interesting architecturally and historically. We had Jools Holland and his band playing for 2 nights which we really enjoyed and enough delicious food to feed a Russian Army - diet starts tomorrow! 🇩🇰 🇸🇪 🇪🇪 🇫🇮 🇳🇴

Cheshire CheeseJune 4, 2023 at 5:27 PM So sorry to hear about your health problems Archerfile, but glad that you still managed to get some enjoyment from your trip. I hope that you
Lady RJune 4, 2023 at 7:10 PM Glad to hear of you safe return AP and that you finally got that cruise! A shame you were not A1 yourself and right idea to get yourself off to your surgery asap. How did you find your garden on your return? We have had and are still having very sunny, dry and breezy days an unusually long spell for the UK 🙃

Sarnia June 4, 2023 at 8:08 PM AP, we are considering a Hampshire meet-up at The Cowherds on Southampton Common at some point in the not too distant future. So far there's just KP and me, but hopefully you might like to join us if your health problems can be resolved.

MiriamJune 4, 2023 at 9:22 PM Welcome back AP. Sounds like a fantastic cruise and holiday. Enjoy your Archers catch ups. I am sure the swollen feet are due to "pills" . As said previously, I had exactly the same problem and could not get any shoes/sandals on by evening! It did get sorted and now have no problems at all..so persevere, though it does take time and is frustrating.. I remember being at a wedding, wearing lovely 10 denier sheer black tights when my feet got so swollen, they burst through ripping these tights and then had to discard the flat sandals I had changed into! This was many years ago - but remember it so well. Now, 9yrs later, this has never happened again, once ky meds were changed.
KPnutsJune 5, 2023 at 7:39 AM Hi Archerphile, I am glad you managed to enjoy your cruise despite the problems with your feet. Hopefully your GP will manage to sort out your meds fairly quickly. As Sarnia mentioned she & I are hoping to arrange a meet up in Southampton. Lady R is uncertain at the moment, I wasn’t sure whether that was due to being unable to leave SirR or the drive. may I suggest that he comes as well & I am happy to play taxi service if that would help. Obviously offer open to Archerphile as well.

AmbridgesMrsPJune 5, 2023 at 11:13 AM Good luck to the Hampshire contingent in organising their meet up. Nice offer from KP - and if/when it happens all goes well and friendships are consolidated.
Thinking from that….. How is Cowgirl ? We have not heard from her for a while.
MiriamJune 5, 2023 at 3:23 PM I only planted my window box 7 days ago now, and what a difference in just a week. This year, I came across a different variety of surfinia trailing petunias. These all have yellow centres with pink or purple outer edges, and are just gorgeous. The other good thing is that the bees love them. Is this due to the yellow centre? Not sure...

ArcherphileJune 5, 2023 at 4:02 PM Hello again everyone & thank you for your very welcomemessages. I am writing this from a bed in Basingstoke hospital where my GP sent me this morning Apparently my O2 levels drop severely on exercise which could be due to: a heart problem, long Covid or a new Covid infection I didn’t know I had, or most worryingly, a pulmonary embolism. So I am here on the ward after sitting in A&E for 4 1/2 hours feeling awful & will be here at least overnight waiting for assessment. They think leg swelling is due to cellulitis in both legs so may be put on intravenous antibiotics. I am Saving phone battery so may not write again for a while. If you hear nothing from me for a few weeks L’an Jan has my phone no & can contact Mr A (Gerald) for News Cheerio for now
Sarnia June 5, 2023 at 4:42 PM Oh dear, AP, what can I say! At least someone is trying to do something about it, but perhaps that's small comfort.

MiriamJune 5, 2023 at 5:32 PM AP. Take care and at least you are in the best place to finally get things sorted out, once and for all, but this not as you and Mr.AP would want.. I with everyone here - Wish You Well, with a speedy recovery and it's just a minor "hiccup" and nothing more. Thinking of you + Mr. AP 🤗🤗😍😍
Lanjan.June 5, 2023 at 7:40 PM I am trying to phone Archerphile's husband but the phone is engaged. Will keep trying. I speak regularly to Cowgirl and she and the animals are fine .
Lanjan.June 5, 2023 at 8:47 PM Archerphile I have only just come back to the blog and did speak to your husband who was really nice and pleasant and understood why people would want to know how you are. Sorry Archerphile ,I didn't read your original message properly. As usual I rushed ahead -and 'phoned.Your husband did say he didn't mind my phoning but he may have just being polite. I will do as you ask and not phone him again for a while by which time hopefully you will be back home All the best Archerphile
No need to apologise LanJan. Gerald wouldn’t have minded at all , I just thought he wouldn’t know who you were & would be busy with family But it’s very kind for you to care enough to do that 😘
‼️ KP sorry but I have written 2 important posts on the old blog please could you bring them over to this new one for me, many thanks - must get to sleep now 🙃
Lady RJune 6, 2023 at 12:51 AM It certainly is KP and we are both bowled over at your very kind and thoughtful gesture.
(WILL ONLY BE OF INTEREST TO HAMPSHIRE BLOGGERS) FEEL FREE TO PASS BY As I have explained before (I think) Mr/Sir/Lord 🤣 R in himself is the same man he was in his 60’s fully interested in the goings on of life and loves a good laugh, unfortunately his mobility issues have progressively worsened to the point that venturing out beyond a few miles is a challenge, for instance to be caught up in traffic for a period of time for whatever reason would be a problem. Also we cannot always fulfil a prospective outing even if ready to actually go out (that mostly being due to a lack of not having “used the bathroom “ and therefore do not risk the outing. However that part aside we did last Friday visit a mobility showroom and have ordered a Power Wheelchair which he can control with a joystick and turns on a sixpence it is new out and the lightest available in the world folds like a wheelchair but does not look anything like a normal model. Not cheap of course but when able to pay for something that can improve one’s health situation worth every penny. Delivery is 2 weeks away and he will need a little time to get used to it. That said because we can not necessarily stay out for a specified amount of time we always use our car. The point of this rather long post is to say that if ever possible to join up for a cuppa it would be an on the day decision, also early starts are a no no for us another reason some social outings even with our closest friends have become curtailed. Anyway I have spouted on for long enough just wanted to fully explain our situation to you KP ⭐️and Sarnia ⭐️ and to thank you again for your kind thoughts in suggesting a Hampshire mini gathering and possible assistance both truly appreciated.

Lady RJune 6, 2023 at 1:00 AM ‼️My goodness when I wrote my post the one above it was Sarnia thanking KP for her generous offer, as soon as I published it the page updated and what a shock reading of Archerphile’s post holiday health situation! Like everyone else we send her our love and support ♥️
Awful night here. 2 emergencies brought in, comings & goings all night, lights on, nasty noises etc - but that’s hospital for you. Going to have chest X-ray this morning . Already been given heparin jab (in stomach!) to thin blood so things are happening. Would love to know how Ev is. Hopefully her daughter can let us know
Sending best wishes and a big hug Archerfile. That was a real shocker, and it must have cast a shadow over the holiday you had waited so long for, but you are in the right place now. I'm glad your doctor acted quickly, and hope you are soon sorted out. 💐
Beautiful paeony KP. I planted a pink Sarah Bernhardt one in someone else's garden and it thrived, but the one I planted in my own must have gone down to Australia! Different soil maybe. We are going to the Royal Cornwall Show at the end of the week and the flower tent is always beautiful, and there is generally a paeony stall there.
Thank you Mrs P your post says everything I would like to have said to Archerphile so will just add on my own best wishes for a firm diagnosis and the required treatment / meds put in place and off home asap 🤞🏼 I thought I was the only person to have met (briefly) AP so l am intrigued that she has somehow passed on her home phone number to Lanjan 🤔 This has been spoken of before how each of us would be able to let the blog know if we were too poorly to post ourselves…….
AP: I don't have the gift that others have of knowing the right thing to say to people caught up in medical situations such as yours, but that doesn't mean I don't think of you often and hope for a positive outcome for you.
Lady R, that is a complicated situation and difficult to manage. At least that wheelchair should make life easier for you. When arrangements can finally be made we'll keep our fingers crossed for a good day for Lord R.
Archerphile, get well soon. I think it says a lot about you that you managed to get off the ship and enjoy the sights even though it must have been difficult/painful. Good job you got a quick g.p. appointment. Hope you get home very soon, take care. Re Ev. I am concerned that we haven't heard anything, hope she is busy recuperating with her 'boys' which I miss hearing about.
Mistral - I am concerned for Ev too. I’ve never met her but feel a geographical connection since she lives very close to my mother in laws old residence and passes it frequently on her walk down to the creek with the boys. I’m very familiar with the monastery nearby and the chocolate cafe in Ryde where we once considered meeting up at. As for news, both Lady R and Miriam gently and kindly warned me off enquiring, thinking that both Ev and Katy are probably both very caught up with whatever treatment Ev is going through. I did understand and hope I wasn’t insensitive towards either E or K when asking for news.
Spicey - I’m so pleased that you have recovered enough to be back to marking exam papers again. In the past it seemed that that activity was so very important to you, so it’s so good to hear that you have regained some ground from such a long journey of I’ll health. MrsP
I'd forgotten that I too had AP phone number too ! Very strange that I had discovered it. Many years ago, when we were on BBC blog and when BBC had a facebook page, I looked and there was AP who had used more or less the same message on both. I then worked out that AP and 'Blah Blah' were the same person. Many years later, when there was some trouble on The Archer Blog, I contacted 'Blah Blah' to wonder if LanJan and myself had the same opinion as AP. I passed the telephone number (on Messenger on facebook) Lanjan then phone AP and so it was..... So don't put anything on two websites !!!! And I am sorry that I couldn't think of another nickname for AP ! Sometimes my memory goes ! Now I am back to marking Pakistan and Singapore ICCC gcse papers and then in July my eldest son is driving me to Germany to have a little holiday. 'As long as I like' he says! It will give Jon a break from waiting on me. At present he does 'tea' which is a BBQ, either on the grill outside or the oven in the kitchen ! NHS taking care of me but I don't want to stay again in hospital as the food was terrible ! Good luck with meal times Archerphile !
Tonight - my thoughts are with you all and with whatever is happening in your lives. My mantra is:- Stay and think positive, no matter what is thrown at you. Sounds silly - but I always try to do this. 🤗🤗
Wishing you a speedy recovery Archerphile. Will be thinking of you and Ev. 💐💐 There a bunch each.
My peonies are still on bud. Don’t seem to want to open. Think it’s too dry. I’m nearly empty in my 6 water butts. When perusing this aft I’ve decided I’m going to have to bite the bullet and get the hosepipe out tonight.
A much cooler + cloudy day today and no sun, the first for about a fortnight, but still so dry. I too am off to do the nightly watering...before meal + TA.
Lady R. That new wheelchair sounds wonderful and will make such a difference to you both. Lord R. will be off and buzzing around in no time at all and I hope you have the L-plates ready. Joking apart - I find it hard that such a help to lives can only be acheived, if can afford to do so. Our generation have been so lucky in many ways, in that although there have been many problems along the way, the difference has to be:- a) Buying properties at an early age and then going onwards b) Living within our means such as simple holidays and limited or no credit agreements. c) Paying into pension schemes at an early age, which was normal then.
I bought my first home at just 24yrs as a single female and the mortgage rate was 18% It was hard as also had a car (a Renault 5 - a sardine car on wheels) but I feel so lucky to have been able to do this.
Too right, Miriam. When I was young it was difficult for a young woman to have a bank account in her own name without a male guarantor behind her, never mind buying a house!
In 1967 they would have looked straight over your head to the next man in the queue, but by 1979 things should really have improved more than that. Good for you for taking up the challenge, Miriam.
PtbY - you’ve had your pre-op, what is your date for surgery ?
I’ve had a call this week from appointments for my steroid injection into my ankle. I’ve been given a cancellation. Only ten days ago the surgeons secretary told me that there were patients referred in December still waiting. When I commented on this in this latest phone call, the appointments woman told me very nicely not to talk to the secretaries, but to call appointments instead. She said if you had called me weeks ago and told me how much pain you were in I would have found a cancellation for you much earlier than this. So on Friday I go to the Musgrove in Taunton. I have to have a companion as I will not be able to drive. It’s my youngest birthday this coming weekend and we had planned to do Stogumber village gardens together. …… might not be possible now.
Tell Mr PtbY that today for the first time ever I got both of them in two but don't tell him until he has done Wordle because I think he knows my starting word * You might know it too of course ! (Some people say it is just luck.I think it is sheer brilliance!)
I did Wordle in 5. He failed. Haha. I’ll tell him about Nerdle. He’s out today so I’m thinking I might get a couple of flags laid that were taken up to build my gazebo. Need to get these jobs done before the op. Have to go see my mate at builders merchants for some sand and some metal reinforcing bar to reinforce my raised bed. I get trade rates on prices there, he’s a grand lad! Hairdressers at lunch time. Then I’ll rest.
Haha. It’s only a small 12” maybe flag and a couple of off cuts to put round the post. Couldn’t start laying a load of flags myself….it would be a disaster.
I’ve just managed to organise hospital transport to bring me home after my steroid injection on Friday. My friend who was to take me is now homeless and already burdened with too much himself. I’m very pleased that PtbY is still up for moving a couple of paving stones before her operation. It is very important to continue to do what we can for ourselves when we are still able.
I haven’t done Wordle yet today. I’ll see how I get on.
My very lovely mum passed over at Mountbatten Hospice on the Isle of Wight at 9:20 am this morning. I have changed my profile to a picture of Buddy lying with her yesterday she could feel him there and stroked his head. On Friday the hospital told mum she had deteroriated to the point no further tests were possible and when given a choice she choose Mountbatten for her final few days. They treated her like a queen she saw the dogs everyday and perked up yesterday morning making me fetch Pino Grigio and maple syrup for her breakfast and telling me she loved me loads. Her brother arrived in the evening and it was like that was what she was waiting for. The hospice called us in at 3 am in the morning. I just want to say that why she was well she really enjoyed reading the blog and your comments and the lack of updates were due to me being overwhelmed. Thank you for keeping mum company from the BBC blog and through covid. She felt you were all friends even though she never met you.
I seem to be the only one who knows this so sad news, but I still want to give my memories of our, now sadly departed friend. EV. She will always be to me:- The Queen of the IOW, who loved painting, so proud of Katy her daughter, and of course "her boys". My favourite memories are of her jaunts to a converted mill in Tuscany for painting but also what else she got up to there, as to food + wine. I might be premature in giving these, my own thoughts, but I just felt the need to do so...
You are only premature Miriam because you have been the first to read Katy’s post.
Now I appear to be the second……. And the tears are pouring down my cheeks.
Dear daughter of Ev - Katy Ev has been the first of us to depart this blog in this way, but it is something that I have feared would happen at some point. There may be others who read but do not post, but we would not know of them. I perceived Ev as an anchor of sound reason amongst us and will miss her sorely. She was so very proud of you Katy, and your relationship of mother and daughter was clearly very positive, and I for one envied you both. I wish you peace and time for yourself once all the necessary arrangements have been made. Thank you for letting us know the situation. I’m sure all of us will be grateful.
Oh Katy, I’m so sorry for you on the news of your dear Mum. I loved hearing about her and the boys and, as others say, she was so proud of you. I send sincere condolences to you. 😢
Oh Katy you have confirmed my worst fear with your very sad news. I have to admit to shedding some tears for the loss of such a lovely “virtual” friend who always combined common sense with empathy and like others I shall miss her greatly here on the blog. Now my thoughts are with you Katy ♥️ look after yourself, I’m sure “the boys” will feel your sadness and do their best to bring you comfort. Should you wish to keep in touch from time to time you will be warmly welcomed.
Like everyone else Katy. i would like to send you my deepest condolences, It was nice of the Hospice to let the dogs be with her and that would have meant so much to her. Your comment,Katy was very moving. Your mum, as P tbY wrote earlier ,was very proud of you . I remember her delight when you graduated. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this very sad time.
Katy, thank you for taking the time to post. I am really sorry for your loss. I never met your mum, but she was always so kind and thoughtful, I used to enjoy her contributions, hearing about the painting in Italy, your island, and of course Gypsy and 'Bud n Dud'. Ev sounds as though she enjoyed life to the full, and certainly seemed to have fitted a lot in. Look after yourself and treasure your memories xxx
Katy, like the others my thoughts and condolences are with you all. I hope the hospice was able to keep her comfortable and am glad that she had her family near.
I can't believe this has happened Katy. It seems to have happened so quickly. It was not long ago she posted a picture of you and her at your graduation day, and she looked so happy. I am very sad, she was lovely.
Such a shock to read this very sad news this morning as I am able to log into our blog from my hospital bed. I said only two days ago that I wanted to hear how Ev was doing and now we know this heartbreaking news. Dear Katy, your Mum wrote about you so proudly and we all followed your progress through graduation and with the boys. She loved where she lived and her life on IOW . Her descriptions of walks were delightful. We will miss her stories enormously and I will especially miss chatting about painting and sharing works we had done. I send my love and thoughts to you and your brother and all Ev’s family. Ev will never be forgotten by any of us here.
Thank you for asking Lady R. My problems seem very small compared with poor Ev. Had another heart scan yesterday, haven’t had results yet. Am on intravenous drip of a strong diuretic to try to reduce the swelling in my legs which is now right up to the thighs. I think it is starting to work. Looks like more days of treatment, observation and tests before I shall be allowed home. Gerald has LanJans phone number so can let you know if anything serious happens.
Oh Archerphile don’t say that! You too are a special “virtual” friend and all we want to hear is that your are back home with Mr A (you’re lovely Gerald) so please just you make sure you obey my orders 🤗
Heartbreak here again this morning as the lady in the bed next to me died an hour ago. She had been due to be transferred across to St Michaels Hospice, next to the hospital, today but had become too ill to move. She had no family and only 5 unknown patients in the ward here with her. The mood here is very sombre this morning. A shadow has settled on us.
Have just left a comment under your previous post AP and now this what a somber time is befalling us all right now, hold on as best you can and remember it is always darkest before the dawn and new hope and better days will emerge 🥰
Katy, I was so sad to hear your news. Your mum was such a lovely person and it was always a joy to read her posts. I shall miss her presence on the blog and hearing about you all. My thoughts are with you and your family at this time.
How is everyone today? I still felt down this morning, as if I had lost a family member - which in a sort of way, I have! I think Katy and I had very similiar experiences as to when my mum died - it brought back many memories and feelings.
Another lovely sunny and hot afternoon here. When I was out and about this morning, I was surprised to see just how yellow all the grass verges are now., as my lawns are becoming.
Wish You All Well... and AP hope you'll soon be back home and things are properly sorted, and life will be as usual.
To add, my spirit was lifted this morning. The Local Council planted a wild-flower bed on what was just a green space. Thanks to the weather, it is now wonderful abd ull of red "flanders" poppies, blue cornflowers, wild grasses. I will walk there, so to look at it properly and there is a lovely new garden bench as well, to just sit and enjoy this new place.
Katy, I’m sending my sincere condolences to you and Ev’s Brother at this sad time. As others have said she was creative and enjoyed her painting which she shared with us on the blog. It’s never easy to deal with the loss of someone we love. Ev will be missed on this blog.
So sorry to hear this sad news. Thank you for letting us know, Katy. We never met Ev in person but she was a muched loved member of the blog. Sending my love and condolences to you Katy, and to your uncle and the wider family. 😢🙏
Katy. thank you very much for this, I didn't know it was possible. I would like to make a charitable donation in lieu of flowers, and was thinking of The Dogs Trust, unless there was another cause Ev would like? Such a strange time, I hope you are o.k. and thank you for taking the time to keep us informed. xxx
Katy thank you so much for your post detailing your lovely mum’s funeral details and informing us that should we wish we will be able to virtually attend (or at the very least view post the service if not possible live) This is so very thoughtful and will mean so very much to many of us x
Thank you for the information about your mum's funeral Katy. I would also like to make a donation in her memory. If you don't have a specific cause I will also go for The Dogs Trust.
Katy thank you for taking the time to post the info at what must be a terribly sad time for you. It is much appreciated. I too would like to make a donation in memory of your mum to a charity that was close to her heart.
How lovely for Katy to tell us all about the funeral. It is so kind and thoughtful of her in what must be, such a difficult time for her and family. I wish them well.
I am missing AP and Mrs P today..so sending my best wishes.
EV served in the WRNS. I personally, would like to make a donation to the RNIL, a volunteer organisation, but whose aim is to Save Lives at Sea.. If EV had a favourite charity, then I will donate to this.
Dear Katy: This is such very sad news. I echo all the positive comments that have been made. Eve came across as a lovely, measured and kind person. If she were only half of all of this in the real world outside of our blog, then she was truly 'a good egg'! Take care of yourself Katy, as your loving Mum would wish. These are difficult times, but I am sure you have supportive systems in place. x
Thank you every one for your kind words. Mum asked for the ceremony for donations to Mountbatten Hospice as she was extremely grateful for the care they gave her in the last few days. However, an animal charity that was particularly close to her heart was Friends of the Animals on the Isle of Wight who brought both the late Gypsy and Buddy to us. However anything in her name anywhere appreciated as she would love to see generosity in her name. She insisted that on the order of service I wrote "don't be mean" on the donations bit. I was going to edit that but my uncle and the funeral director told me to leave it.
You are doing your Mum, so proud. A big Thank-you - for keeping us so informed.. It has meant a lot. Now just go + do what is most important for you, as to your late Mum, (who we knew as EV), and your family. It must have been hard for you, telling all to virtual strangers, but I for one admire you for doing so. Take Care Katy..🤗
Quite right Katy! I guess we will need your mum’s name for our donations. I will donate online to the IOW Mountbatten Hospice and one is usually asked the name of the person the donation Is in memory of 🤔….. Regarding the online connection for the funeral there is the link, then password and then a third long line of numbers etc do these have be added too?
Thank you Katy, as Ev posted many times about Gypsy, Dud and Bud, I will donate to Friends of the Animals on the IoW. I found their newsletter online, there was a photo of you, your mum and Gypsy. I promise not to be mean....that raised a smile :)
Many years ago I went with my partner at that time to friends of the animals on the island when we were looking for a cat to home. I remember being so impressed by an area of the rescue that was a retirement home for many animals that would not ever be suitable for rehoming. A lovely rescue.
I’ve been scrolling through the FB. Page of the rescue but can’t find the picture of Ev and Katy and the dogs. Must get out of bed and on with the day…. Could you let us know the date of the post on the FB page…… please. MrsP
Hello Mrs. P, Janice beat me, I've been outside all day, supposedly potting up plants and making hanging baskets but really snoozing and reading :) I haven't got facebook, but just googled FotA, Isle of Wight, and it came up with their newsletters, they certainly seem to do a good job.
Just to let you all know I am home from hospital now. To my lovely bed and some decent food. My official diagnosis is Stage 2 Heart Failure in which the heart does not relax enough between beats. This means not enough Oxygen gets to my lungs or to remove fluid through the kidneys (hence the alarming swelling.) I have been given a new regime of drugs to take, aimed at preventing any more damage. Although it sounded very alarming I am relieved to know what has been happening and the cause of the many symptoms, like a persistant cough, anxiety and depression, that I never associated with a a heart problem. So now, feet up as much as possible, new BP drugs, diuretics and rest. Thank goodness for an iPad, groups like ours and the radio!
Archerphile wonderful to know you are home😆🥰 fully diagnosed and with the correct treatment in place you must both be weak with relief (I know I am 🤗 as other bloggers will certainly be) Rest as instructed, and with this awful 30c heat won’t be too hard, drink plenty of fluids and enjoy many chats with your “virtual” friends right here (and elsewhere?)
I have just telephoned The Friends of the Animals on the IOW . Their telephone number is 01983522511. They are open today until 4pm and are open on Tuesday -Friday from 10am-5pm. I did say they might get more people donating . The very pleasant lady I spoke to asked me if I would let you know how easy it was to donate over the 'phone which it was. Also of course if you are a tax payer then gift aid adds more money.
Thanks LanJan, I was going to phone them today but was waylaid, see above to Mrs. P. I tried to donate online but there was no facility to declare gift aid or to state that the donation was in memoriam, so I will phone on Tuesday.
Very pleased to hear that you are home,Archerphile and now know what the cause of your illness is so you are now at the start of your recovery . Enjoy resting ,reading,, I padding ,blogging and listening to the radio.
So pleased to hear that you’re safely home AP. Have you got support nearby while you’re recovering? I reckon that I am within 30 minutes drive of you so if you were comfortable leaving a number for me here ( I can delete it from the blog after noting it if you don’t want to leave it out here for too long) then I could message you so you have my contact details, also handy if we decide to arrange a meet up, same applies to LadyR. Meanwhile I trust everyone will be sensible in the heat, it was lovely at the Grange on Thursday, a magnificent Cosi fan tutti. Catching a full cross section of music this month: Assasins by Sondheim last w/e, Mozza this week, Bruce Springsteen next week, early opera double bill of Gluck & Purcell, then Tchaikovsky’s Queen of Spades the following week, then back to Chichester for Sound of Music…. Then a couple of weeks off before we go to Glyndebourne for Handel’s Semele. This is what we tend to do rather than multiple holidays, although we are starting to feel the urge to travel more extensively again, having been happy to stay predominately in the UK for the last few years.
Such a kind offer KP I have very good neighbours who have already been in to see me, my daughter & her family live only 10 miles away at Whitchurch and she comes past us every day on her way to & from school. My dear husband is being a huge support and insists on doing all sorts of jobs around the house he has never had to attempt before! However I did make our roast dinner tonight, ensuring I was sitting down to peel potatoes and apples etc. The last thing I want is to give up all normal activity and sink into ‘Old Womanhood’
Archerphile -It's so lovely to find out what the doctors tell you and tht all your symptons can be treated. I felt relieved that my various symptons had illnesses and that I, (except the one that doesn't go away !) had medicines to help. Bullus pemphagoid either goes away or it doesn't. Three years now but still giving me 'gyp.' Anyway I hope you are resting, plenty of water, and have as many take-aways as you can so you don't have to stand at the cooker! Spicy xx
Lan Jan - Michael Vaughan kaboshed England's chances last week! 'Only one man will see England's team home......' and he names Jack Leach. Two days later he has a stress fracture ! Thank goodness enough team members went to Moheen Ali to persuade him out of retirement !
AP Great news to hear you're back home, with a definite diagnosis and the meds. to sort. I was recommended a listen, which I am passing onto you and others. I was not sure about it at first, but then found it intriguing and compulsive listening. It might well not be to your taste but it gripped me. It is :- Believe in Magic.
This is a true story, but well presented in a number of episodes.
I donated to the animal charity online. Very simple but could not say in memory of Ev. Very glad to hear you are home Archerphile. Nothing like lounging in your own bed. Get rested up, pills down your neck and hopefully get to feeling better. Marvellous day for washing bedding. Dry in no time. Just dreading the ironing of it later.
Welcome home ARCHERPHILE and good to hear that you now know the reason for all your symptoms. We haven’t got the weather here, we seem to be on the edge of that huge orange area on the weather map. It’s been a drizzling day, but mild with it. I shall be happy if we have the same tomorrow as then I shall feel safe enjoying village open gardens in Stogumber about fifteen miles from me but quite a drive for my Bath daughter who I hope will join me on her Birthday weekend.
My steroid injection into my ankle went extremely well yesterday and was fascinating to watch it on the screen beside me. Oh the joy of SOME of today’s technology and so far today I have not experienced any pain, even tho’ I was told it could take up to five days to kick in for the relief of the pain.
I am so pleased that Katy has felt able to give us links for donations in Evs memory and for the funeral. Thank you very much KATY.
And thanks to others who have given help towards finding photographs and easy ways to donate.
So Sorry Mrs. P. in forgetting about your steroid injection. I am so glad it went well. I had similar for shoulder tendonitis, a steroid injection done under a scan a while ago. Like you, I was fascinated seeing it done on the screen, esp. when it was injected and could see the liquid going in. Mine was a once off, and sorted things out, but I did have 2-3 days of severe discomfort after, but it was worth it... Enjoy tomorrow. Me so hot..and the coolest place in house, where my thermostat is and gets no sun, is now showing 25.6C
I have just been invited to go to a Garden Open event tomorrow. Not sure yet, but have left it to say Yay or Nay in the morning... Where this is, 25miles away, (N.Wales) they are already having thunder, so might be a good idea,l.
What a storm - wind so strong it blew windows closed, road like a river and drains couldn't cope, constant thunder + lightning, and such torrential rain!. It was great and air is so much fresher now..and car is clean. So glad I didn't water garden tonight 🤣 🤣
Archerphile, very pleased for you that you are home and finally know the cause and have the correct medication. hopefully it will all be onwards and upwards now, as they say on GQT... Mrs. P and LanJan. I have replied to your messages above.
Spicy re your Michael Vaughan comment.. Please ignore if you don't follow the Game. Not convinced..-backward step. I do agree that I think we are going to be hammered but hope I am wrong Do you remember the days when we knew who would be in the England team and from which County they came? Sadly now I haven't a clue who some of them are
Nowadays I have to ask Jon where the players come from. Sometimes even he doesn't know and we have to Google it! Not sure if the English are outnumbered. Have to wait and see. Still marking for GCSE papers so I will have to watch highlights in the evening as I daren't turn TMS other wise no papers will be marked !
Extra to my "storm" post from last night, my lovely window box planted just 2 weeks ago, was battered flat. It has perked up now but needed some TLC. As the plants have not yet developed a good root system, they came loose in the compost, so needed firming in again. I had to cut off a lot of battered flowers, and sadly my oriental/tall poppies have also had to be cut right back, as stems were broken down and lying flat on lawn. Such a shame.. It was just like a violent storm I experienced, when staying on the edge of the jungle in mid Mexico..except the roof didn't leak! Another story..😀
Such a shame Miriam the bad weather always seems to wait until new planting has been done be it wind, rain or both! We had a bit of a storm late afternoon some thunder lightening and rain but not to your level. This happened as we arrived home from a run out around the countryside in order to get out and about also be cool via the air con in the car blow me about halfway round we hit quite heavy rain on and off - it was so lovely to see and smell it! As we arrived at Petersfield the car showed a drop in temp from the 29c we left at home to 22c….. As we approached home back to a 28c 😱
‼️Archerphile we hope now you are home that you are beginning to catch up on your lost sleep and any effects from new meds will be in the main positive ones 🌻
Not down here, Lady R. The temperature on my deck and terrace has remained resolutely between 35 and 40* for over a week, even though the new blind shelters it in the morning. We've had a noticeable amount of rain this afternoon, but my head still shrieks and weighs a ton, so there's a storm about somewhere
Thank you so very much for all the lovely encouraging messages everyone. I have to see the GP on Friday to assess how things are going and whether my meds need adjusting. As I am now officially a ‘Heart Patient’ I am going to ask him for a referral to the Alton Cardiac Rehab gym, where Gerald has been going for 20 years since his quadruple heart bypass op. It has kept him in good health all that time. I need to loose weight again and will need a supervised exercise programme so, hopefully, we can pop down to Alton every Tuesday and exercise together.
Totally different subject of interest to anyone who enjoys Peter Robinson’s Inspector Banks books, set in Yorkshire. Apparently his latest, and last Banks book has just been published. Sadly Peter Robinson died a few months ago and this is being published posthumously.
Nice to hear from you AP and a good idea to ask the GP about the benefit of attending the Re Hab gym especially as you would be able to attend as a couple 🥰
Latest frustrating update. Hospital told me to get appt on Friday with GP to discuss ongoing treatment Phoned GP this morning The first appt they can offer is not until JULY! Say Hosp only gave me enough medication to last until Friday, then see GP The best they can offer is to have A doctor phone me on Wed afternoon! 😖
Don't give up hope Archerphile This happened to me once and the doctor I spoke to on the 'phone one morning said that I could go and see a doctor that afternoon.. I know you are not as old as me but if you play the old lady card ,and not show annoyance with the system it seems to work I wouldn't be surprised if you get to see a Doctor very soon. All the best.
I think it is a sort of filtering system -a bit like the triage 999 system ?
It is possible they haven’t yet received my discharge letter from the hospital which instructs GP ro continue assessment and treatment. When they get it it might hurry things up a bit.
ARCHERPHILE That’s precisely what I thought, and even if the letter has arrived at the surgery,it won’t necessarily be in any doctors hand immediately. LanJan says, politely, that it’s a filtering system. I call them, less politely, gate keepers ! Good luck.
Ap. Just insist on a GP by 'phone appointment. If they feel the need to see you, they will fit you in. With modern technology, I don't understand why it seems to take so long for hosp. discharge notes to get onto the GP system. In my day, long long ago now, both surgey and pharmacy were faxed (different) discharge notes on day of hospital of discharge. Things seem to have gone backwards now. Books:- Have you read The Rising Tide - a Vera story?
Is it staff cuts as a result of The Pandemic - that is staff levels are not as they once were? I know when I've been to my surgery recently, the waiting room is almost empty wheras it would often been full and some standing. Also the board showing which Dr. or Nurse was in which room, had many vacant spaces...
Re the Vera book- no Ive not read it. Much as I loved the Shetland series I never got into the habit of reading Vera, though we always watch the programmes on TV
I think you once mentioned Peter Robinsons books so you may be interested in my post above. I had no idea he had died, so no more C. I. Banks books.
Yes. I too didn't know he had died. I haven't read some of his later Banks books, as felt they became what I call "bank balance" books. The same is happening with Peter James and his "Grace" books, in my opinion. I still enjoy the Vera books though, but got annoyed with the TV series, as the ones which were televised had plots and characters changed dramatically and so different from the original stories . Many of TV Vera series is now done by tv writers, as there are only 10 Vera books.
I know what you mean When a series goes on for too long the stories become very formulaic. Banks was always going on about what music he played in the car and his favourite brand of whisky.
A while back I posted that I decided to get a momento, as to The Coronation of our now King. This arrived today, and so pleased with it. It is a crystal paper weight, and just what I wanted - something tasteful, not too costly, simply just to mark the occaision.
Spent a lovely morning yesterday sat outside a cafe in prime position waiting to see the king. He passed by, walking up the road, waving. I’ve got it on video. Now I can say I’ve seen a king and a queen.
Just completed Wordle started with my usual word then on second try took on board your hint ptby which gave me all correct letters except the middle one and only one seemed to fit albeit to make a strange word so meant in 3!!! Good job I was sitting down.
Both MrNuts & I were both niggled by today’s word. We both got it in 4 as the only word that fitted with what we’d already got, but not a proper word in my book! Still I’m up to a 110 streak (MrNuts is nearly 400😏)
Still no COVID jab. Enlivened by Friday's theatre audition I braved the double bus journey and country hike through the campus to the university health centre - only to be told that I should have come last month because they'd run out of the Moderna and only had Pfizer left. Mrs Jobsworth on reception assured me that she knew of no connection between Pfizer and myocarditis and clearly thought I was just making a fuss. She then informedme haughtily that anyway I'd have to be over 65 to be eligible for the Moderna. Then, as she flips over the page to check my date of birth, 'Oh, you ARE over 65'. (Thinks) Should've gone to Specsavers. Well, in her defence, I was wearing sunglasses! Notwithstanding the continued absence of protection against COVID and still being worn out from the unaccustomed walk back up all the hills afterwards, it was worth it just to watch Mrs Jobsworth make an ass of herself!
It is strange how news of covid infections and rates, now don't seem to be available, yet it is still here and to stay... I spoke to a next door but one neighbour recently, and he was wearing a mask...his wife was +ve!
Not likely, Lady R. The whole point of avoiding the Pfizer jab Is that my daughter got myocarditis from it. As her allergy 'portfolio' is similar to mine, and I already have a heart murmur, I'm not prepared to take the risk. Medics get twitchy about people making the connection in case it puts them off being immunised, but there most certainly is one. Apart from anything else, if there has been a jab developed for my specific age group I expect to be given it - and anyway, it's for over 75, not 65! Honestly, give some people a clipboard and they can hardly cope with the size of their importance!
Sorry Sarnia I meant “thanks I’ll take the compliment on not looking my age” certainly not to take a vac not suited to you I should have realised how my remark sounded 🫢
Re Ev and Friends of the Animals. I phoned them today to make a donation, the lady on the phone said that several people had phoned today mentioning the blog, from all over the country. She said she will be phoning Katy at some pont to pass on details. I thought it was lovely as she obviously knew them both, it felt just right.
That sounds lovely Mistral, although I admit to donating to The Hospice that was also mentioned either one Ev’s covers wishes and that is the main thing of course.
I was one of the ones who phoned today ( thanks for the number Lanjan). Had an amusing time with her trying to pronounce the Cornish names as I spelt out the address. The person I spoke with early in the morning knew them both well but didn't seem to know Ev/ Marlene had died and was sad to hear it.
You mentioned Wordle ,Sarnia. I also thought it was an odd word and only got it in 5 because nothing else fitted(I had put pluck on the previous line) Does anyone else do Nerdle? I prefer that .
I did do Nerdle, and Dordle, and Quordle, and Absurdle, and ...., you get the picture! So now I stick to Wordle, Duotrigirdle, and Waffle. My current, best, streak on Wordle is 39, nowhere near KPNuts, and certainly no match for MrNuts! (I expect he's *very* careful now now to slip up and lose that impressive streak!)
OWIAS MrNuts is very methodical and wrote a scrabble computer programme for his Mum so manages to keep his record clean without resorting to any form of cheating, I have been known to succumb to the temptation of a word finding app if i am getting really frustrated. LanJan I enjoy Nerdle & now start with two equations that encompass all the numbers & 3 out of 4 functions, usually get it out in 3 or 4 attempts,
Early morning. I look out into the garden. One cat is sitting on one bench on what is euphemistically called the lawn The other cat sitting on a seat overlooking the "lawn" Third cat -not ours- sitting on top of the bird table under cover.(it has a little sloping roof) On the lawn itself is Rooky -a bird who has been visiting for several years and which I think is a crow probably . He used to come several years ago when Mr LJ and I had our elevenses ( at half past ten) and wait for some dry cat food which Mr LJ brought out for Percy. Rooky still walks round as if he owns the place. The cats don't seem bothered. My hope is that if he has lasted this long he will continue to be alright
I agree with Archerphile LJ 🤗 (I love the 10.30am elevens by the way ☕️🤣)
Archerphile is your phone call with a Dr today if so hope all goes to your satisfaction if not get in touch with the hospital to ask for their assistance you must have your medication check and re prescribed as necessary by the weekend…..
You do have at least one other companion in that parallel universe of time shift Sarnia. Although I have actually had proper early mornings for the last three days due to finally getting some work done on my flat, and only one week away from my first anniversary of moving here. ( yes it is one whole year since I moved ) But yesterday I had the most productive day I’ve had for years. Up early, a wash on the line and round the block with Lady before my 60 plus fit club session. Then a little shopping and a visit to the library, lunch at home then out to a TG meeting followed by a short rest then a meal and still with enough energy to do an hour and a half’s walking around Bossington hill watching a golden globe of sun sink into the ocean, then home to bed for us both. At the moment there is a herd of Belted Galloways out on the moor and I watched as a mum and one of her twins slowly making their way towards another part of the herd. Then realised that the other twin was some distance behind but being very slow. Then it let out a bellow and mum and baby number one stopped and waited for number two twin to catch up, but as soon as it had done so, mum and number one set off again, without slow coach having a rest him/herself. I can only put my renewed energy down to the lack of pain, which just goes to show how demanding on energy pain really is even if not constant pain. The carpenter has installed the cat flap in the window of the wet room which is to become my utility / laundry room / cat feeding and entry/ exit and releasing one of the windows in my bedroom so that I can at last open a window and air my bedroom each day. I’m pretty sure all the closed up windows in this house were done in the seventies when builders had all sorts of new chemical products to play with. It’s taken several hours just to get the window out of the frame, because it was nailed, screwed and glued tightly and had to be cut open with some heavy duty power tools.
Loved your description of the cats in your garden LJ.
It's my magic garden, Mrs P. I sit on my deck in the South of France and watch the clematis and passion flowers, or in my swing chair in the Greek courtyard watching the light changing among the trees and time stands still.
Yes all the best tomorrow P tbY Hope you are relaxing now after no doubt working hard this morning.
KP I find it interesting the way you do Nerdle That is a clever move -I think.! The only flaw I can see is that you will not be able to get Nerdle in 2 If I get a number or more than one which is maroon I put it in several places to have a better chance of getting that number in the right place on line 2 Same with the functions. I get very cross if I can't get the answer in 4 and at the moment 3 is my mode . As to Wordle I have failed on more than one occasion often because it is an American spelling . When I have got it in 2 it has been luck. I always start with the same word and have another word with 5 different letters which I follow up with if only one letter is correct on line one. I know that word is incorrect of course because I haven't used the correct letter on line one!
Janice, 9.45 i phoned in the afternoon, must have been the same person beause she said she had only heard the sad news today. Lady R, I agree with you, it is very nice just to be able to contribute at all, and I am surprised how moved I am by events that happen to un-met people.
As per many actresses of her era, she did a brilliant appearance in a Morecombe + Wise Show, in a play "wot I rote". I loved her in the TV drama - Elizabeth is Missing and I hope this is now shown again as a tribute.
I was equally surprised when I heard that Angela Lansbury had died. She was such a formidable lady that she rather gave the impression that the Grim Reaper wouldn't dare...
I was the last to go in for op yesterday so didn’t arrive back on the ward until 8.20. No pain till spinal thingy wore off and I had to get out of bed for a wee, 3am. Agony ever since and not a wink of sleep. Hope they don’t come wanting to get me up and out of bed this morning. I’m using you Cheshire Cheese as my inspiration that all will be well.

ReplyDeleteHello All
Back home from the Baltic - visited 5 Countries and 7 Cities, all with beautiful weather and via very calm seas.

So sorry to hear about your health problems Archerfile, but glad that you still managed to get some enjoyment from your trip. I hope that you
Lady RJune 4, 2023 at 7:10 PM
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear of you safe return AP and that you finally got that cruise! A shame you were not A1 yourself and right idea to get yourself off to your surgery asap. How did you find your garden on your return? We have had and are still having very sunny, dry and breezy days an unusually long spell for the UK 🙃

AP, we are considering a Hampshire meet-up at The Cowherds on Southampton Common at some point in the not too distant future. So far there's just KP and me, but hopefully you might like to join us if your health problems can be resolved.

Welcome back AP.
KPnutsJune 5, 2023 at 7:39 AM
ReplyDeleteHi Archerphile, I am glad you managed to enjoy your cruise despite the problems with your feet.

Good luck to the Hampshire contingent in organising their meet up.
Nice offer from KP - and if/when it happens all goes well and friendships are consolidated.
Thinking from that…..
How is Cowgirl ?
We have not heard from her for a while.
MiriamJune 5, 2023 at 3:23 PM
ReplyDeleteI only planted my window box 7 days ago now, and what a difference in just a week.
This year, I came across a different variety of surfinia trailing petunias. These all have yellow centres with pink or purple outer edges, and are just gorgeous.
The other good thing is that the bees love them. Is this due to the yellow centre? Not sure...

Hello again everyone & thank you for your very welcomemessages.
I am writing this from a bed in Basingstoke hospital where my GP sent me this morning
Apparently my O2 levels drop severely on exercise which could be due to: a heart problem, long Covid or a new Covid infection I didn’t know I had, or most worryingly, a pulmonary embolism.
If you hear nothing from me for a few weeks L’an Jan has my phone no & can contact Mr A (Gerald) for News
Cheerio for now
Sarnia June 5, 2023 at 4:42 PM

I am trying to phone Archerphile's husband but the phone is engaged.
Will keep trying.
I speak regularly to Cowgirl and she and the animals are fine .
ReplyDeleteLanjan.June 5, 2023 at 8:47 PM
Archerphile I have only just come back to the blog and did speak to your husband who was really nice and pleasant and understood why people would want to know how you are.
Sorry Archerphile ,I didn't read your original message properly.
As usual I rushed ahead -and 'phoned.Your husband did say he didn't mind my phoning but he may have just being polite.
I will do as you ask and not phone him again for a while by which time hopefully you will be back home
All the best Archerphile
No need to apologise LanJan. Gerald wouldn’t have minded at all , I just thought he wouldn’t know who you were & would be busy with family
DeleteBut it’s very kind for you to care enough to do that 😘

DeleteIt certainly is KP and we are both bowled over at your very kind and thoughtful gesture.
(WILL ONLY BE OF INTEREST TO HAMPSHIRE BLOGGERS) FEEL FREE TO PASS BY
As I have explained before (I think) Mr/Sir/Lord 🤣 R in himself is the same man he was in his 60’s fully interested in the goings on of life and loves a good laugh, unfortunately his mobility issues have progressively worsened to the point that venturing out beyond a few miles is a challenge, for instance to be caught up in traffic for a period of time for whatever reason would be a problem.

ReplyDeleteSo sad you have medical problems on your return from holiday. Hope they get you sorted out as soon as possible. Best of luck!
Awful night here. 2 emergencies brought in, comings & goings all night, lights on, nasty noises etc - but that’s hospital for you. Going to have chest X-ray this morning . Already been given heparin jab (in stomach!) to thin blood so things are happening.
ReplyDeleteWould love to know how Ev is.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful paeony KP.
ReplyDeleteThank you Mrs P your post says everything I would like to have said to Archerphile so will just add on my own best wishes for a firm diagnosis and the required treatment / meds put in place and off home asap 🤞🏼
ReplyDeleteI thought I was the only person to have met (briefly) AP so l am intrigued that she has somehow passed on her home phone number to Lanjan 🤔 This has been spoken of before how each of us would be able to let the blog know if we were too poorly to post ourselves…….
AP: I don't have the gift that others have of knowing the right thing to say to people caught up in medical situations such as yours, but that doesn't mean I don't think of you often and hope for a positive outcome for you.
ReplyDeleteLady R, that is a complicated situation and difficult to manage. At least that wheelchair should make life easier for you.
ReplyDeleteWhen arrangements can finally be made we'll keep our fingers crossed for a good day for Lord R.
Archerphile, get well soon. I think it says a lot about you that you managed to get off the ship and enjoy the sights even though it must have been difficult/painful. Good job you got a quick g.p. appointment. Hope you get home very soon, take care.
ReplyDeleteRe Ev. I am concerned that we haven't heard anything, hope she is busy recuperating with her 'boys' which I miss hearing about.
Mistral - I am concerned for Ev too.
DeleteI’ve never met her but feel a geographical connection since she lives very close to my mother in laws old residence and passes it frequently on her walk down to the creek with the boys.
DeleteIn the past it seemed that that activity was so very important to you, so it’s so good to hear that you have regained some ground from such a long journey of I’ll health.
MrsP
I'd forgotten that I too had AP phone number too !
ReplyDeleteVery strange that I had discovered it.
ReplyDeleteMy mantra is:- Stay and think positive, no matter what is thrown at you. Sounds silly - but I always try to do this.
🤗🤗
Wishing you a speedy recovery Archerphile. Will be thinking of you and Ev. 💐💐 There a bunch each.
ReplyDeleteMy peonies are still on bud.
DeleteI too am off to do the nightly watering...before meal + TA.
Lady R. That new wheelchair sounds wonderful and will make such a difference to you both.
ReplyDeleteLord R. will be off and buzzing around in no time at all and I hope you have the L-plates ready.
Joking apart - I find it hard that such a help to lives can only be acheived, if can afford to do so.
Our generation have been so lucky in many ways, in that although there have been many problems along the way, the difference has to be:-
a) Buying properties at an early age and then going onwards
b) Living within our means such as simple holidays and limited or no credit agreements.
c) Paying into pension schemes at an early age, which was normal then.
I bought my first home at just 24yrs as a single female and the mortgage rate was 18%
It was hard as also had a car (a Renault 5 - a sardine car on wheels) but I feel so lucky to have been able to do this.
Too right, Miriam. When I was young it was difficult for a young woman to have a bank account in her own name without a male guarantor behind her, never mind buying a house!
ReplyDeleteYes. I had to fight hard to get the mortgage, just because I was a single female. This was 1979.
DeleteIn 1967 they would have looked straight over your head to the next man in the queue, but by 1979 things should really have improved more than that. Good for you for taking up the challenge, Miriam.
DeletePtbY - you’ve had your pre-op, what is your date for surgery ?
ReplyDeleteI’ve had a call this week from appointments for my steroid injection into my ankle.
Operation is on the 15th June.
DeleteNot long now.
Prepare now P tbY .
ReplyDeletePractice resting!
and
Do Wordle and Nerdle today.
Tell Mr PtbY that today for the first time ever I got both of them in two but don't tell him until he has done Wordle because I think he knows my starting word *
You might know it too of course !
(Some people say it is just luck.I think it is sheer brilliance!)
Brilliant ! I 'm cheering when I get a word in 3 !!!
DeleteI did Wordle in 5. He failed. Haha. I’ll tell him about Nerdle.
DeleteHe’s out today so I’m thinking I might get a couple of flags laid that were taken up to build my gazebo. Need to get these jobs done before the op. Have to go see my mate at builders merchants for some sand and some metal reinforcing bar to reinforce my raised bed. I get trade rates on prices there, he’s a grand lad!
Hairdressers at lunch time. Then I’ll rest.
Heck! Hip-hop on June 15th and you're still laying flags? What on earth will you be capable of once it's done and dusted!
DeleteWonderwoman or what!
No, Sarnia's phone, hip-op, not hip-hop.
DeleteHaha. It’s only a small 12” maybe flag and a couple of off cuts to put round the post. Couldn’t start laying a load of flags myself….it would be a disaster.
DeleteEven so....
DeleteI’ve just managed to organise hospital transport to bring me home after my steroid injection on Friday. My friend who was to take me is now homeless and already burdened with too much himself.
DeleteI’m very pleased that PtbY is still up for moving a couple of paving stones before her operation. It is very important to continue to do what we can for ourselves when we are still able.
I haven’t done Wordle yet today.
I’ll see how I get on.
Blast !
DeleteGot the last four letters in 2, but then could not get the first letter.

DeleteMy very lovely mum passed over at Mountbatten Hospice on the Isle of Wight at 9:20 am this morning.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts are with Katy and her very sad loss.
ReplyDeleteI am in bits...😭😭😭
I seem to be the only one who knows this so sad news, but I still want to give my memories of our, now sadly departed friend. EV.
ReplyDeleteShe will always be to me:-
The Queen of the IOW, who loved painting, so proud of Katy her daughter, and of course "her boys".
My favourite memories are of her jaunts to a converted mill in Tuscany for painting but also what else she got up to there, as to food + wine.
I might be premature in giving these, my own thoughts, but I just felt the need to do so...
You are only premature Miriam because you have been the first to read Katy’s post.
DeleteNow I appear to be the second…….
And the tears are pouring down my cheeks.
Dear daughter of Ev - Katy
Ev has been the first of us to depart this blog in this way, but it is something that I have feared would happen at some point.
Lovely post...and so meaningful.
DeleteI'm so sorry to hear your sad news Katy but thankful that she had those last few days with you and her beloved dogs.
ReplyDeleteOh Katy, I’m so sorry for you on the news of your dear Mum. I loved hearing about her and the boys and, as others say, she was so proud of you.
ReplyDeleteI send sincere condolences to you.
😢
Thank you, Katy. I'm so sorry for your loss.
ReplyDeleteOh Katy you have confirmed my worst fear with your very sad news.
ReplyDeleteI still feel 😢
DeleteLike everyone else Katy. i would like to send you my deepest condolences,
ReplyDeleteIt was nice of the Hospice to let the dogs be with her and that would have meant so much to her.
Your comment,Katy was very moving.
Your mum, as P tbY wrote earlier ,was very proud of you .
I remember her delight when you graduated.
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this very sad time.
My thoughts and prayers are with you Katy, and all of her family and friends in your sad loss.
ReplyDeleteAs long as we're remembered, then we live on... xxx
ReplyDeleteKaty, like the others my thoughts and condolences are with you all. I hope the hospice was able to keep her comfortable and am glad that she had her family near.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe this has happened Katy. It seems to have happened so quickly. It was not long ago she posted a picture of you and her at your graduation day, and she looked so happy. I am very sad, she was lovely.
ReplyDeleteKaty, if you feel able to let us know when and where your mother's funeral is to take place I would be very grateful.
ReplyDeleteSuch a shock to read this very sad news this morning as I am able to log into our blog from my hospital bed.
ReplyDeleteI said only two days ago that I wanted to hear how Ev was doing and now we know this heartbreaking news.
So sorry - *her brother*
DeleteAgree with your sentiments Archerphile…
DeleteHow are you progressing are tests / treatment still ongoing and are you feeling any better as a result🤞🏼Sending love from myself 💐 (and Mr R)
DeleteLooks like more days of treatment, observation and tests before I shall be allowed home.
Gerald has LanJans phone number so can let you know if anything serious happens.
Oh Archerphile don’t say that! You too are a special “virtual” friend and all we want to hear is that your are back home with Mr A (you’re lovely Gerald) so please just you make sure you obey my orders 🤗
DeleteThank you for opening a new blog with the beautiful candle, KP. A very thoughtful touch.
ReplyDeleteHeartbreak here again this morning as the lady in the bed next to me died an hour ago.
ReplyDeleteShe had been due to be transferred across to St Michaels Hospice, next to the hospital, today but had become too ill to move.
DeleteKaty, I was so sad to hear your news. Your mum was such a lovely person and it was always a joy to read her posts. I shall miss her presence on the blog and hearing about you all. My thoughts are with you and your family at this time.
ReplyDeleteHow is everyone today?
ReplyDeleteI still felt down this morning, as if I had lost a family member - which in a sort of way, I have!
DeleteThanks to the weather, it is now wonderful abd ull of red "flanders" poppies, blue cornflowers, wild grasses. I will walk there, so to look at it properly and there is a lovely new garden bench as well, to just sit and enjoy this new place.
That sounds really beautiful Miriam 🪻🌻🌺🌸🌼
DeleteI am glad for you, Miriam - just what you needed.
DeleteKaty, I’m sending my sincere condolences to you and Ev’s Brother at this sad time.
ReplyDeleteAs others have said she was creative and enjoyed her painting which she shared with us on the blog. It’s never easy to deal with the loss of someone we love.
Ev will be missed on this blog.
So sorry to hear this sad news. Thank you for letting us know, Katy. We never met Ev in person but she was a muched loved member of the blog.
ReplyDeleteSending my love and condolences to you Katy, and to your uncle and the wider family.
😢🙏
Katy. thank you very much for this, I didn't know it was possible.
ReplyDeleteI would like to make a charitable donation in lieu of flowers, and was thinking of The Dogs Trust, unless there was another cause Ev would like?
Such a strange time, I hope you are o.k. and thank you for taking the time to keep us informed. xxx
Donation a lovely thought Mistral so I also will await Katy’s reply to your suggestion.
DeleteKaty thank you so much for your post detailing your lovely mum’s funeral details and informing us that should we wish we will be able to virtually attend (or at the very least view post the service if not possible live) This is so very thoughtful and will mean so very much to many of us x
ReplyDeleteThank you for the information about your mum's funeral Katy. I would also like to make a donation in her memory. If you don't have a specific cause I will also go for The Dogs Trust.
ReplyDeleteKaty thank you for taking the time to post the info at what must be a terribly sad time for you. It is much appreciated. I too would like to make a donation in memory of your mum to a charity that was close to her heart.
ReplyDeleteHow lovely for Katy to tell us all about the funeral. It is so kind and thoughtful of her in what must be, such a difficult time for her and family.
ReplyDeleteI wish them well.
I am missing AP and Mrs P today..so sending my best wishes.
EV served in the WRNS.
DeleteI personally, would like to make a donation to the RNIL, a volunteer organisation, but whose aim is to Save Lives at Sea..
These are difficult times, but I am sure you have supportive systems in place. x
ReplyDeleteThank you every one for your kind words.
ReplyDeleteYou are doing your Mum, so proud.
DeleteA big Thank-you - for keeping us so informed..
DeleteRegarding the online connection for the funeral there is the link, then password and then a third long line of numbers etc do these have be added too?
Lady R. The name is in Katy's post about the funeral - Mrs Marlene Bell.
DeleteApologies you provided this earlier with the funeral arrangements.
DeleteIt just seemed so strange not to see EV, anyway my donation has been done online in memory of our dear blogger friend ♥️ 🙏🏼
DeleteThank you Katy, as Ev posted many times about Gypsy, Dud and Bud, I will donate to Friends of the Animals on the IoW. I found their newsletter online, there was a photo of you, your mum and Gypsy. I promise not to be mean....that raised a smile :)
ReplyDeleteI will do the same. I was surprised to read they have helped some of the Bodmin Moor ponies.
ReplyDeleteMany years ago I went with my partner at that time to friends of the animals on the island when we were looking for a cat to home. I remember being so impressed by an area of the rescue that was a retirement home for many animals that would not ever be suitable for rehoming.
ReplyDeleteA lovely rescue.
Mistral -
ReplyDeleteI’ve been scrolling through the FB. Page of the rescue but can’t find the picture of Ev and Katy and the dogs.
Must get out of bed and on with the day…. Could you let us know the date of the post on the FB page…… please.
MrsP
It is on their newsletter no 67 some way down the page.
DeleteThanks Janice
DeleteYes - at 12.55 I am still in bed, but was up at 7 yesterday and had a long day.
ReplyDeleteHello Mrs. P, Janice beat me, I've been outside all day, supposedly potting up plants and making hanging baskets but really snoozing and reading :) I haven't got facebook, but just googled FotA, Isle of Wight, and it came up with their newsletters, they certainly seem to do a good job.
DeleteJust to let you all know I am home from hospital now. To my lovely bed and some decent food.
ReplyDeleteMy official diagnosis is Stage 2 Heart Failure in which the heart does not relax enough between beats.
Archerphile wonderful to know you are home😆🥰 fully diagnosed and with the correct treatment in place you must both be weak with relief (I know I am 🤗 as other bloggers will certainly be)
DeleteRest as instructed, and with this awful 30c heat won’t be too hard, drink plenty of fluids and enjoy many chats with your “virtual” friends right here (and elsewhere?)
I have just telephoned The Friends of the Animals on the IOW .
ReplyDeleteTheir telephone number is 01983522511.
DeleteI tried to donate online but there was no facility to declare gift aid or to state that the donation was in memoriam, so I will phone on Tuesday.
Very pleased to hear that you are home,Archerphile and now know what the cause of your illness is so you are now at the start of your recovery .
ReplyDeleteEnjoy resting ,reading,, I padding ,blogging and listening to the radio.
So pleased to hear that you’re safely home AP.
ReplyDeleteHave you got support nearby while you’re recovering?
A kind offer noted KP, thank you.
DeleteSuch a kind offer KP
DeleteI have very good neighbours who have already been in to see me, my daughter & her family live only 10 miles away at Whitchurch and she comes past us every day on her way to & from school.
Three years now but still giving me 'gyp.'
ReplyDeleteAnyway I hope you are resting, plenty of water, and have as many take-aways as you can so you don't have to stand at the cooker!
Spicy xx
Lan Jan - Michael Vaughan kaboshed England's chances last week!
ReplyDelete'Only one man will see England's team home......' and he names Jack Leach.
Two days later he has a stress fracture !
Thank goodness enough team members went to Moheen Ali to persuade him out of retirement !
AP Great news to hear you're back home, with a definite diagnosis and the meds. to sort.
ReplyDeleteI was recommended a listen, which I am passing onto you and others. I was not sure about it at first, but then found it intriguing and compulsive listening.
It might well not be to your taste but it gripped me.
It is :-
Believe in Magic.
This is a true story, but well presented in a number of episodes.
I donated to the animal charity online. Very simple but could not say in memory of Ev.
ReplyDeleteVery glad to hear you are home Archerphile.
ReplyDeleteWe haven’t got the weather here, we seem to be on the edge of that huge orange area on the weather map.
DeleteI had similar for shoulder tendonitis, a steroid injection done under a scan a while ago.
Pleased to hear that you have now had your injection MrsP and that the pain has already improved.
DeleteI have just been invited to go to a Garden Open event tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteNot sure yet, but have left it to say Yay or Nay in the morning...
Where this is, 25miles away, (N.Wales) they are already having thunder, so might be a good idea,l.
I'm so pleased to hear that you are back home Archerfile and have treatment for your condition. I hope that things improve soon for you.
ReplyDeleteWhat a storm - wind so strong it blew windows closed, road like a river and drains couldn't cope, constant thunder + lightning, and such torrential rain!.
ReplyDeleteIt was great and air is so much fresher now..and car is clean.
So glad I didn't water garden tonight 🤣 🤣
This comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteNot a drop of rain here Miriam only 45 miles away.
DeleteArcherphile, very pleased for you that you are home and finally know the cause and have the correct medication. hopefully it will all be onwards and upwards now, as they say on GQT...
ReplyDeleteMrs. P and LanJan. I have replied to your messages above.
Mistral and Janice
ReplyDeleteThanks for your help, both of you, but I have not managed to find it.
Will have another try in the morning.
Thank you ….found it !
ReplyDeleteSpicy re your Michael Vaughan comment..
DeletePlease ignore if you don't follow the Game.
Not convinced..-backward step.
I do agree that I think we are going to be hammered but hope I am wrong
Do you remember the days when we knew who would be in the England team and from which County they came?
Sadly now I haven't a clue who some of them are
Nowadays I have to ask Jon where the players come from. Sometimes even he doesn't know and we have to Google it!
DeleteNot sure if the English are outnumbered.
ReplyDeleteIt was just like a violent storm I experienced, when staying on the edge of the jungle in mid Mexico..except the roof didn't leak!
Delete‼️Archerphile we hope now you are home that you are beginning to catch up on your lost sleep and any effects from new meds will be in the main positive ones 🌻
DeleteWHAT! Holy moly Sarnia you have my deepest sympathy 😔
DeleteThank you so very much for all the lovely encouraging messages everyone.
ReplyDeleteI have to see the GP on Friday to assess how things are going and whether my meds need adjusting.
ReplyDeleteLatest frustrating update.
DeleteHospital told me to get appt on Friday with GP to discuss ongoing treatment
Phoned GP this morning
The first appt they can offer is not until JULY!
Say Hosp only gave me enough medication to last until Friday, then see GP
The best they can offer is to have A doctor phone me on Wed afternoon! 😖
Don't give up hope Archerphile
ReplyDeleteThis happened to me once and the doctor I spoke to on the 'phone one morning said that I could go and see a doctor that afternoon..
I know you are not as old as me but if you play the old lady card ,and not show annoyance with the system it seems to work
I wouldn't be surprised if you get to see a Doctor very soon.
All the best.
I think it is a sort of filtering system -a bit like the triage 999 system ?
It is possible they haven’t yet received my discharge letter from the hospital which instructs GP ro continue assessment and treatment. When they get it it might hurry things up a bit.
DeleteARCHERPHILE That’s precisely what I thought, and even if the letter has arrived at the surgery,it won’t necessarily be in any doctors hand immediately.
DeleteLanJan says, politely, that it’s a filtering system.
I call them, less politely, gate keepers !
Good luck.
Ap. Just insist on a GP by 'phone appointment. If they feel the need to see you, they will fit you in.
DeleteWith modern technology, I don't understand why it seems to take so long for hosp. discharge notes to get onto the GP system.
DeleteRe the Vera book- no Ive not read it. Much as I loved the Shetland series I never got into the habit of reading Vera, though we always watch the programmes on TV
DeleteI think you once mentioned Peter Robinsons books so you may be interested in my post above. I had no idea he had died, so no more C. I. Banks books.
Yes. I too didn't know he had died. I haven't read some of his later Banks books, as felt they became what I call "bank balance" books.
DeleteThe same is happening with Peter James and his "Grace" books, in my opinion.
I still enjoy the Vera books though, but got annoyed with the TV series, as the ones which were televised had plots and characters changed dramatically and so different from the original stories . Many of TV Vera series is now done by tv writers, as there are only 10 Vera books.
I know what you mean
DeleteWhen a series goes on for too long the stories become very formulaic. Banks was always going on about what music he played in the car and his favourite brand of whisky.
A while back I posted that I decided to get a momento, as to The Coronation of our now King.
ReplyDeleteThis arrived today, and so pleased with it. It is a crystal paper weight, and just what I wanted - something tasteful, not too costly, simply just to mark the occaision.
Sounds a lovely memento Miriam 👑
DeleteSpent a lovely morning yesterday sat outside a cafe in prime position waiting to see the king. He passed by, walking up the road, waving. I’ve got it on video. Now I can say I’ve seen a king and a queen.
ReplyDeleteWow that’s fantastic ptby 🤗 and had he known you have a (virtual) friend called Lady R he may have actually stopped to speak with you 😂🤣😂
DeleteSurely he must have come across you before in the normal run of things, Lady R? Not with Queen Camilla enjoying the roses at Mottisfont?
DeleteThose were the days Sarnia - Mottisfont wonderful 🌹June roses visits. Never did bump into any royalty though 🫢 😆
DeleteI went to see the roses at Mottisfont yesterday, absolutely wonderful. It was quite crowded for a Monday, but no royalty
DeleteAnyone else think today's wordle was a bit strange?
ReplyDeleteHell yeah. Must be American word. I only got it cos I only had a p left that would go in front.
DeleteJust completed Wordle started with my usual word then on second try took on board your hint ptby which gave me all correct letters except the middle one and only one seemed to fit albeit to make a strange word so meant in 3!!! Good job I was sitting down.
DeleteBoth MrNuts & I were both niggled by today’s word. We both got it in 4 as the only word that fitted with what we’d already got, but not a proper word in my book! Still I’m up to a 110 streak (MrNuts is nearly 400😏)
DeleteStill no COVID jab. Enlivened by Friday's theatre audition I braved the double bus journey and country hike through the campus to the university health centre - only to be told that I should have come last month because they'd run out of the Moderna and only had Pfizer left.
ReplyDeleteMrs Jobsworth on reception assured me that she knew of no connection between Pfizer and myocarditis and clearly thought I was just making a fuss.
Wow Sarnia you should have said “I’ll take it” clearly you look a youngster 👏🏻
DeleteIt is strange how news of covid infections and rates, now don't seem to be available, yet it is still here and to stay...
DeleteI spoke to a next door but one neighbour recently, and he was wearing a mask...his wife was +ve!
Yes, Miriam, my daughter's got it, plus chest infection.
DeleteNot likely, Lady R. The whole point of avoiding the Pfizer jab Is that my daughter got myocarditis from it. As her allergy 'portfolio' is similar to mine, and I already have a heart murmur, I'm not prepared to take the risk.
ReplyDeleteMedics get twitchy about people making the connection in case it puts them off being immunised, but there most certainly is one.
DeleteAh, I see, Lady R. Being me, I hadn't thought of it as a compliment, I was too busy watching Mrs Jobsworth making a fool of herself.
DeleteVery good Sarnia :) I will quote that in future.
ReplyDeleteRe Ev and Friends of the Animals.
ReplyDeleteI phoned them today to make a donation, the lady on the phone said that several people had phoned today mentioning the blog, from all over the country.
DeleteI was one of the ones who phoned today ( thanks for the number Lanjan). Had an amusing time with her trying to pronounce the Cornish names as I spelt out the address. The person I spoke with early in the morning knew them both well but didn't seem to know Ev/ Marlene had died and was sad to hear it.
DeleteYou mentioned Wordle ,Sarnia.
ReplyDeleteI also thought it was an odd word and only got it in 5 because nothing else fitted(I had put pluck on the previous line)
Does anyone else do Nerdle?
I prefer that .
I did do Nerdle, and Dordle, and Quordle, and Absurdle, and ...., you get the picture!
DeleteSo now I stick to Wordle, Duotrigirdle, and Waffle.
DeleteLanJan I enjoy Nerdle & now start with two equations that encompass all the numbers & 3 out of 4 functions, usually get it out in 3 or 4 attempts,
Early morning.
ReplyDeleteI look out into the garden.
One cat is sitting on one bench on what is euphemistically called the
lawn
The other cat sitting on a seat overlooking the "lawn"
Third cat -not ours- sitting on top of the bird table under cover.(it has a little sloping roof)
On the lawn itself is Rooky -a bird who has been visiting for several years and which I think is a crow probably .
What a lovely picture you paint LanJan. I can see them all now! 🐦⬛ 🐈 🐈⬛ 🐈
DeleteI agree with Archerphile LJ 🤗
Delete(I love the 10.30am elevens by the way ☕️🤣)
Archerphile is your phone call with a Dr today if so hope all goes to your satisfaction if not get in touch with the hospital to ask for their assistance you must have your medication check and re prescribed as necessary by the weekend…..
Lady R, if I get elevenses at all it's usually between 12 and 1, but I inhabit a parallel universe in which time behaves differently!
DeleteYou do have at least one other companion in that parallel universe of time shift Sarnia.
DeleteAlthough I have actually had proper early mornings for the last three days due to finally getting some work done on my flat, and only one week away from my first anniversary of moving here.
( yes it is one whole year since I moved )
But yesterday I had the most productive day I’ve had for years.
DeletePtbY
ReplyDeleteGood luck for your operations tomorrow.
Will you be going in tonight ?
Yes all the best tomorrow P tbY
ReplyDeleteHope you are relaxing now after no doubt working hard this morning.
KP I find it interesting the way you do Nerdle
That is a clever move -I think.!
The only flaw I can see is that you will not be able to get Nerdle in 2
If I get a number or more than one which is maroon I put it in several places to have a better chance
of getting that number in the right place on line 2
Same with the functions.
PtbY. Wishing you well for tomorrow and a speedy recovery.
ReplyDeleteI second Miriam’s good wishes ptby 🤗
DeleteMe too, PtbY! 🤞
DeleteJanice, 9.45
ReplyDeletei phoned in the afternoon, must have been the same person beause she said she had only heard the sad news today.
Lady R, I agree with you, it is very nice just to be able to contribute at all, and I am surprised how moved I am by events that happen to un-met people.
All the best PTBY.
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone. Going in for noon tomorrow. 🏃♀️before long. 😊
ReplyDeleteAll the best!
DeleteHope all goes well PtbY.
ReplyDeleteGood luck PtbY.
ReplyDeleteBest of luck PtbY.
ReplyDeleteSpicyxx
I have just had a very nice thank you letter from the Friends of the Animals .
ReplyDeleteShe/ he Chris Mirehouse mentioned that it was in memory of.Marlene/ Ev
I have just read that that Glenda Jackson has died.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised to see this, as for some unkown reason, I thought she had already gone..🙈
As per many actresses of her era, she did a brilliant appearance in a Morecombe + Wise Show, in a play "wot I rote".
DeleteI loved her in the TV drama - Elizabeth is Missing and I hope this is now shown again as a tribute.
I was equally surprised when I heard that Angela Lansbury had died. She was such a formidable lady that she rather gave the impression that the Grim Reaper wouldn't dare...
DeleteI was the last to go in for op yesterday so didn’t arrive back on the ward until 8.20. No pain till spinal thingy wore off and I had to get out of bed for a wee, 3am. Agony ever since and not a wink of sleep. Hope they don’t come wanting to get me up and out of bed this morning.
ReplyDeleteI’m using you Cheshire Cheese as my inspiration that all will be well.
It will PtbY, just make sure you take all the pain relief on offer!
