ArcherphileOctober 8, 2023 at 7:40 AM We had an unexpected Zoom call from the family in France at 8pm so missed the last few competitors and was too late to vote by the time we ended the call. So we never got to see Krishna news reader. How did he do? We thought Angela Scanlon was amazing with the Charleston so I would have voted for her at least. I’ll catch up on iPlayer this morning.

Proud to be Yorkshire.October 8, 2023 at 7:50 AM He was quite good doing the Charleston to” money, money, money” song from Caberet. Angela scanlon was really good, so was Amanda Abingdon with the rumba. Nikita doing the jive was so flat footed. Think she might go.

Lady ROctober 8, 2023 at 10:20 AM Agree Krishna was really enjoyable and is obviously wanting to do well such a lovely gentleman. Angela’s Charleston was another level 👏🏻 I only realised last night that young Bobby is the son of Jade Goody but now I know I can see the likeness! Also like a young smoother Mick Jagger 🤭
ArcherphileOctober 8, 2023 at 11:02 AM I know this is showing prejudice but I really didn’t like seeing Nikita (from Ukraine) dancing with Layton dressed up as a woman. Somehow I have no problems seeing two men dancing together, as men. In he last series it was done very well, athletic at times and moving at others. But when one is pretending to be a girl and they are dancing as a pretend heterosexual couple it disturbs me. Sorry if this offends anyone, just my feeling.

Cheshire CheeseOctober 8, 2023 at 2:03 PM My take on this is that men and women move in a different way. When I see a man dance dressed as a man I expect him to move like a man. When the man is dressed like a woman I expect him to move like a woman so my brain was confused when watching that dance.

AmbridgesMrsPOctober 8, 2023 at 3:44 PM I don’t watch - so have never commented, but intrigued by A P and CC posts above, it sounds to me that any problem you might have is about authenticity ! And I find your feelings quite understandable.
AmbridgesMrsPOctober 8, 2023 at 3:56 PM I’ve not done much exploring of the region in the time I’ve lived here, but have recently started getting myself out. Yesterday I went to Dulverton a very small town in the heart of Exmore and discovered that it has a large river flowing through, the Barle, and an arched medieval bridge. But as I drove into the Main Street to park, there to my right was a double freestanding stone staircase and at the top a very attractive metal canopy. I immediately recognised it. A memory squirrelled away which I vaguely thought belonged to Bridport. I immediately realised that i must have visited with my partner on a holiday in North Devon. I love small towns, English or Welsh. Always something unique about each one. Fish and chips sitting on a bench watching the river flowing in the dusk. The fish was good. The chips the best I have EVER tasted.
I really fancy fish and chips for tea tonight now. It’s good that you are getting out and about now. I’m so happy for you that you got moved and have started another chapter of your life. I think it was very brave to move somewhere where you didn’t know anyone. Mind you, you get to know people when you’ve got a dog. Our regular Monday morning cafe visit with the dogs…..we see Barney and mabel( cockers) with their mum and dad, Mitzi and her owners, then there’s Jane…..a little grey haired lady who loves all the dogs that go in the cafe and she gives them all a biscuit. In fact our Mabel thinks any like grey haired lady is her….poor eyesight to blame. Now if we didn’t have dogs I wouldn’t be talking to these people.
Am just shedding a few tears, as Little Sis had her black lab at the vets today, to go over the Rainbow Bridge. 🌈 It's only been a question of time recently, but that awful decision had to be made. To Strictly fans, I have just seen a photo of the lovely Amy Dowden on the red carpet at The Pride of Britain Awards. Two words - Simply Stunning.
Why is it Fish 'n Chips always taste so much better, when bought from the chippy in the open air? Mind you, I still miss the newspaper wrapping (now I'm showing my age 🙀)!
Very strange Wordle for me tonight. Put in my opening word, one letter came up yellow. Used that one letter as my first for my next word, and EVERY LETTER CAME UP YELLOW. And it was so easy to see the correct form of those letters. Very odd !
Gosh that’s even better PtbY. I’ve been rather good of late, only once in the last fortnight did I get to the 6th go without getting the word. Mostly in the region of 3rd and 4th lines. I don’t have a regular starting word either. Something that comes into my head at that moment of opening Wordle up.
Sorry folks that message was just for Lanjan she will know what it means, and Janice you do have correct dates! I have been out a day early as tomorrow is due to be wet and will be busy in other ways at home. Lovely country pub meal - staff exceptional in their pleasantness and helpful to us in so many ways much appreciated. The journeys to and from a nightmare at least 6 lots of roadworks most with 3 way lights. Messed up at one lot and on getting ourselves back on track very nearly got stuck in even worse ones on The Hogs Back. Still home now and a 😴 is beckoning 😂
Woke up groggy this morning due to being kept awake by high winds + torrential rain, throughout the night! It was not helped by 🐈⬛ landing on me in bed, soaking wet + wanting immediate cuddles! Got soaked today just doing a S/market trip. How prices are still so high. I now look for the yellow stickered reduced goods, and special offers. I got a lovely S/O pork joint, half price. This has been cut into 2 joints, which are now in the freezer and will give me many meals, which will work out cost per meal, cheaper than mince. I have a chicken casserole in oven now, using some reduced chicken I found today, and using up loads of left over veg from fridge... Waste not want not..😃
Well I thought I might be the first to wish you a happy birthday ,Lady R. but Janice is really on the ball. Well done to her. Lady R remembered that it would have been Mr LJ's birthday the day before her birthday . I hope you have a lovely day tomorrow.Lady R
Miriam thank you for reminding us about "All Creatures Great and small " Last week's episode had a real good heartwarming factor to it unlike P tbY's recommendation"Wilderness" ! I hope those of you with health problems are feeling better and getting the right treatment. I must say I am not bothered about getting my money's worth out of the NHS . The less I see of the NHS the better. I don't pay anything now of course but was happy to pay and not need them.
You mentioned Dulverton KP . My friend of over 60 years moved from Guildford to Brushford which is a village not far from Dulverton to be near to her daughter and family. The area is lovely and I am sure she is pleased she moved there but as I recall when I visited there is only one supermarket in Dulverton and it is not easy to park either . Also there are very few buses. Fine for a holiday though .
Is anyone else still in summer clothes? I hzaven't got my winter clothes out of their vacuum bags yet. Yesterday down here was just right weather wise . Raining now but still warm. This is the first year since I have been in the south of England that the grass has remained green throughout the summer. That is how I like it.
You will know by now that I hate cooking however I have decided to get a small "oddbox" every fortnight. The odd box contains fruit and vegetables that farmers can't get rid of easily because they have too much of that particular product or the fruit and veg are odd shaped Last time I had a marrow and I made marrow soup . It was lovely This week I have parsnips .I love them roasted and kale which I like steamed plus other items. What it means now is that I plan to make some nourishing soup for the freezer. so vegetables I am not sure what to do with I will just make vegetable soup.
Have any of you read the book "The remains of the day"? It is our Reading Group book for this month . I am really looking forward to reading it. I loved the film starring Anthony Hopkins. Last month's was "Return of the Dancing Master" by Henning Mankell who wrote the Wallenberg books. I was in the minority but I found it very readable if a bit violent.
Are you watching Liverpool on the TV,,Miriam? I watched THE Match when we were robbed ! Only Percy the cat heard me yelling at the TV.
Don't think we will do well in the World Cup,Spicycushion.. Never mind we can't win 'em all.
A very early Happy Birthday to You, dear Lady R. 🙋♀️ 🍷. 💐 Sent the night before as I shall be out most of tomorrow and don’t want to miss sending you my very best wishes. I hope you have a really lovely day and lots more birthdays to come!
Thank you all for your very kind birthday messages (blogger friends you mean a lot to me 🤗) Lots of phone calls coming in and e.mails and texts more to come later good job we went out yesterday for lunch. Certainly the better weather day had some hard rain this morning more to come tomorrow here I believe when I have to go for my jabs!
I washed dog towels yesterday then a small light wash. All soaking wet on the line. Will need to put through spin and start again, but at least fresh rain has given a different rinse.
Having enjoyed yesterday lunch out I am lounging around surrounded by flowers and all things chocolate, 🎂 wine and perfume so doing jolly well ptby 🤗 thank you!
Apologies, I can no longer ignore what is happening in Israel, hence the change of profile picture, which may change again over the next few days. I am not intending to introduce politics into this blog, it’s not the right place, but I am sure you will all understand my feelings at the moment. And the difficulty in commenting on everyday concerns when my whole attention is focused on ‘my’ people and the country I hold in my heart.
It is terrible Archerphile, human beings seem to never learn, a stupid, calculated act of aggression is causing so much suffering and hatred. Like Ukraine, will it ever end?
Thank you for your understanding. I am torn between displaying the Ukrainian flag, as I have been since the beginning, or a Star of David at the moment!
I can only concur with the preceding comments. I am finding it difficult to watch or listen to news at the moment. I struggle to get my head around the atrocities that human beings seem prepared to commit,
I feel almost ashamed at the fact that I have “ switched off “ ! I have been obsessed with world news and current affairs throughout my adult life, but now feel, ( I am assuming it’s to do with age ) that I cannot bear to know what is going on with the inhumanities between peoples.
I too am appalled by what is happening in the Middle East . It is unbelievable that such atrocities are going on. I was born during the 2nd World War and we now know that terrible things happened then . I was too young to know what was going on but since there was no television I expect most people didn't know .
Have been well and truly stabbed in both arms today! Glad they went back to using Pfizer for us this time because I reacted badly to the new vaccine back in the Spring. The nurse advised keeping my arms moving as much as possible for the rest of the day to avoid too much discomfort and swelling. Wish I ‘d been told that before.
I had both my jabs at lunchtime today. Left arm flu right arm Covid. Very slight ache in flu arm right now but only on certain movement. I had nearly all AstraZeneca in the beginning but Pfizer last time and today with the added ingredient to protect against latest variant. We shall compare notes tomorrow AP 🤞🏼 for you….
Sorry to hear about your Covid reaction Archerphile. Whenever I have been for either a flu or Covid injection I have been asked whether I am left or right handed. Why is this? I always reply that I am right handed but sleep on my left hand side so would prefer the jab to be in my right arm. As I hope to be lying that way for a good few hours and not writing for that length of time I would have thought that was obvious . I therefore had both jabs, one after the other at the same time in the same Am I missing the point here? Pun intended.
I’ve always assumed if only having one injection best to keep your dominant arm/hand free of any possible reaction but as one in each arm today I wait and see 🫢
The nurse today said she always gives the jabs in separate arms in case there is a reaction in one. I must say, several hours after the Covid one my arm is not too bad, have been waving it in the air quite a lot, perhaps it has helped!
I can see the nurse's point which was why originally I decided to have the two jabs done at different times but when I was offered the flu jab at the same time it seemed like a good idea. Perhaps I have been fortunate in that so far I haven't had any reaction to either but it is something worth thinking about Do many people get reactions ? What sort of reactions? It is a heavy aching arm or actually feeling ill?
I have had all 3 vaccine manufacturers, AZ x2, Moderna + Pfizer. My latest was Pfizer, for the second time, and this one gave me the least side-effects and these were very minimal. I still need to source a 'flu vaccine, as my surgery has informed me that mine is still pending, but the surgery can no longer do any more! PS Car passed its 1st MOT today, but I would have been extremely surprised if it hadn't, but there is always that slight niggle in mind. Cold here tonight, so the CH might just be put on for a short while to take the chill off for an hour.
Lady R - todays Arm Report - Covid Arm remarkably free of symptoms just very slightly tender and no itching - thank goodness, after last time! Flu Arm - bit tender last night but fine today.
Must say this new updated Pfizer jab is a thousand time better than the jab I had in the Spring.
Yesterday I ended up seeing the surgeon who did my hip replacement because I developed a lot of pain around the hip and thigh a few days ago. He said that the hip is fine and thinks the pain is coming from a trapped nerve in the spine. He's referred me for a scan, meanwhile I'm gobbling painkillers for pain which is nearly as bad as when I had my hip replacement operation. So frustrating when all was going so well.
Oh no. This is awful for you. Have you tried hot baths and stretching? I hope you don’t have long to wait for your scan. I would ring up the scanning dept and ask how long you’ll have to wait.
I’ve been getting a sharp stabbing pain occasionally in my leg in my scar area. Don’t know why. But it’s just momentarily so not going to worry about it.
So sorry to hear about both your post operative pain problems. A trapped nerve sounds very painful CC, I hope they can do something to help. And do seek help if the stabbing pain goes on PtbY, you don’t want to be stuck with it for ages.
I am having a frustrating day, as 🐈⬛ came in this morning with a live bird. This was behind and under my bed for a while, until 🐈⬛ appeared downstairs with it in her mouth again. To cut a long story short, this bird which is totally unharmed and can fly around, is now hidden. I know where it is, but can't get to it to rescue. What I am ashamed about, is that 🐈⬛ who is also trying to get to it, keeps appearing with dust/cobwebs stuck to her black fur..🙀 Just hope it stays where it is, whilst Strictly is on!
I’ve just returned from avery nice evening with our local Male Voice Choir plus a group of Ukrainian women and teenagers performing some of their traditional songs. A very good evening to fund raise for Ukraine.
I am finding it very difficult to get immersed in Strictly this year. There aren’t any couples I think ‘ I must vote for them, they are terrific’. Perhaps it’s because so many if the contestants are known to me. I’m also finding all the shouting & whooping, up on the interview platform after each dance, annoying. It all seems to have gone a bit over the top. ……..Or perhaps I’m just getting old? 😥
I do agree about the noise AP we have some CD’s of the early days and the show was so calm then no strobes /graphics to distract either and the interview area is certainly more chaotic 🫣 However with the world as it is I feel I need it in my life for the colour and flippancy of the programme. My favourites last night were Adam& Luba (opening the show with their stunning waltz) Annabell with her jive, Amanda Abington, and I thought Angela Rippon did a good job too - those legs!!!
What struck me about last night's show was Anton getting more excitable than usual (hope he's not turning into a Bruno). Motsi, on the other hand, made some useful comments instead of her usual meaningless rubbish. Dancing wise I liked Amanda and Ellie.
I said the same about Anton. Hope he calms down a bit otherwise I’ll be going off him. Archerphile, I’m with you with all the noise on the interview deck…gets on my nerves. I haven’t got a favourite as I don’t know half of them. I do like Amanda and Angela scanlon. Thought they made Angela Rippon look ridiculous again last night. She is marvellous though when you consider her age. Hated Shirley’s hair, Motsi’s jacket looked ridiculous, Tess’s frock was dreadful. My husband said…I don’t know why you watch this cos all you do is moan. He has a point really.
Yes, Shirley’s hairstyles have been a bit odd and very contrived looking, this series and Motsi always look ridiculous to me. But I have to admire Shirley’s bravery in carrying on doing the show with apparent ease. Apparently she is being trolled, had death threats and been afraid to leave home recently for fear of being attacked. Goodness only knows why - the internet has a lot to answer for these days.
I was away at the weekend and forgot to do the Wordle. So my 14 day progress towards regaining my carelessly lost 143 day streak has gone for a Burton. But I did get today's puzzle in 3 : )
Hope you feel better soon MrsP. A friend of mine used to recommend the 'Rum and Candle' treatment: 1. Light a candle 2. Drink rum, 3. Repeat 2. until you can see two candles. 4. Snuff out both candles. 5. Go to bed. 😊
Love it OWiaS. Get better soon Mrs P. I go for honey and lemon in hot water when the sneezes and chills arrive, not quite so exciting as the rum though! I've had two family birthday teas to prepare yesterday and today so been very busy. If anyone has any ideas how to make old fashioned pink ( or any other colour) fluffy jelly using vegetarian (carageenan) jelly crystals without it ending up very sloppy please let me know!
Thank you, OWiaS. Just been putting the finishing touches to my refurbished dining room. For the first time in 52 years of living in this house I absolutely love it and spend hours just sitting and looking at it. Now both reception rooms give me pleasure just to be in them - but a VERY long wait and at a sorry price.
O how I love my BT 'super fast' full-fibre broadband. It's almost as quick as dial-up!
I don't think the hub was designed to work through brick internal walls : ( One day we'll book the engineer to come and get it working properly throughout the shoe. But there's still rather a lot of tidying to be done before he has any chance of accessing all necessary area!
Love it owias such honesty and it sounds very homely 🤗 BT don’t I’ve been going balmy with phone calls to them and tech people ringing me back to sort out problems 😡
Hope that you're not feeling too bad this morning MrsP. I agree with the honey and lemon to help. So pleased to hear that you are now enjoying your new rooms Sarnia, especially as you'll be spending more time in there with winter approaching. I'm trying to distract myself from the trapped nerve pain by catching up with admin stuff and trying not to think about all the jobs in the garden that need doing. I'm hoping toget my Christmas cake made this week with Mr CC's help.
Mine yesterday was appalling when everyone else just seemed to nail it- even when I had the first 4 letters got it in 5 in the end 😏 brain fog day! Don’t always get to do it everyday so out of practice maybe, says she grasping at straws to save my pride 😂
Poor Mrs P, laid low yet again. May I join you in trying not to think about jobs that need doing in the garden, CC. Sorry to hear about the pain. I'm beginning to realise that I must have got off comparatively lightly with my ops.
No news from me, apart from feeling so cold yesterday afternoon I turned on the small radiator in the lounge (note: not the big one) and wrapped up in a blanket and fell asleep! After having to spend ages, with instruction book in hand, trying to get the wretched boiler to come on for heating & not just hot water!
Thank you for all commiserations folks. No better today but did sleep, and no access to lemons either. When as a cadet nurse doing my stint in the pharmacy, one of the pharmacists used to say…. A cold last two weeks. If you take something for it, it last for a fortnight. It’s not the end of the world, is it ?
A lovely photo on my IPad sent from my daughter this morning - my GD on the Marine Science boat in what looks like the harbour, with a crab on her hand. She says she’s loving it. She and her new group of friends have already sourced, viewed and booked their accommodation for next year. They have only been in Newcastle for less than a month. This girl does not let the grass grow under her feet !
Sounds as if your GD has sussed out the accommodation situation very well. Very sensible to book ahead as places go so quickly. And good to know she’ll be with the same group of friends next year. My GD did the same for her 2nd & 3rd year at Warwick Uni and, as fortunately some of her housemates are staying on to do Masters, she is staying put to do her PGCE.
Hope you’re shaking off your cold MrsP, MrNuts is recovering from a stinker, touch wood I’ve avoided it. The headache I’ve got is trying to arrange a preXmas family gathering with sibs, our offspring & their offspring. There are 3 littles aged 1-6yrs in Brussels with school & busy working parents & babes in arms in London with busy daddies. So sister in Brussels & I feel that assembling in Brussels would be the easiest option, but sister in London with two baby grandsons thinks it should be in London……hopefully it won’t lead to any major bust ups
KP do you mean the whole families or just sisters and children if so Brussels sounds a good suggestion but how old are London Sis GC are they too young to travel with her and therefore she feels they will be missing out? Like Christmas itself these kind of pre events are also a minefield and I will be very interested to read other bloggers advice as I am not really in a situation to be of any help, but wish you a success and happy result!
Wishing Mr Nuts well again and Mrs P I do hope you are still looking after yourself and recovering slowly but surely.
Sounds like you have a real headache there KP! I expect lots of phone calls and messages will be needed and lots of help from everyone involved. Don’t let it all land on you and allocate different ‘jobs’ around the family, wherever you end up! That’s the only advice I can give because you and MrKP should be able to enjoy yourselves too.
Thanks LadyR - and KP, hope MrKP better soon. Yesterday was horrible, feeling very very unwell with a two hour period of excessive shivering eventually getting into bed with all the warm clothes on. Never done that in my life before. Today cold abating but weak back and heavy neck/ shoulder ache is preventing me from standing. And I have four days washing up to do. Fortunately friend walked Lady yesterday but won’t be around today. I suppose it’s age that makes a simple cold so debilitating.
Are you sure it’s a simple cold and not Covid Mrs P? Mr A is suffering too at the moment but dosen’t want to spend out on a test. If you’re not going to infect anyone else and are staying in till better, there dosen’t seem much point in knowing really.
Sorry to hear of people’s illnesses. I suppose it’s that time of year.
After my post the other week about picking up beech nuts all day long I finally got a garden vac with the review that it did pick up the beech nuts. I’d been prompted by one coming into Lidl but when reading reviews on Amazon it was rubbish. Then this Von something or other make popped up. £10 cheaper and much better. It’s my new favourite toy. If anyone is thinking about a garden vac I would highly recommend this one. £49.99 on Amazon. Right back out to suck up other half of gardens beech nuts.
A quick look in only. Hopefully those with health problems feel better soon, and get help as and when required. If any are affected by the storm, then I wish you well. Me - a lovely, calm, warm + sunny day temp. 18C! Lawns mowed, hopefully for the last time 🤞
I have not been out for three days and do not have to go out until Friday when I take my car in for its service and MOT. I shall be wearing a mask.
I didn’t like wearing a mask during the period of Covid but I did see the reason for doing so. I then came to feel that it would be a benefit to all if people wore them when entering public spaces or meeting other people when in the throes of a cold. I’ve always considered it to be socially unacceptable to mix with people and go to work when having a cold.
ARCHERPHILE I’m not sure. When I was unwell some weeks ago I did test and it was negative. I haven’t tested this time, but have wondered if I’ve got flu rather than just a cold. Felt slightly less rotten today !
Well, that sounds a bit better Mrs P. I hear there are an awful lot of colds and flu around at the moment. Our newspaper asked whether Covid is going to become an annual infection like flu. Hopefully the various jabs we get should offer a bit of protection.
I hope that you will feel better soon MrsP. As the main reason for wearing masks is to reduce the risk of passing on respiratory infections it's considered bad manners not to wear one when suffering from respiratory symptoms in Singapore. I wonder if it makes any difference to their rates of infections. Good luck with your arrangements for a family get together KP. I know how difficult it can be. I'm hoping to make my Christmas cake today. I think it's something I'll be able to do and will help to stop me being frustrated about not being able to get out for a decent walk or do the garden.
Thank you everyone for the sympathies with family tribulations. We have agreed that it is really about us four siblings and we will go to Brussels as my sister there has come over here on many occasion. We will see our nephew & his three kids then the adults will go out for dinner. If my London based nephews with babies want to join us they would be welcome but but no-one would be upset if they declined. MrNuts & I will go Friday-Monday so will be able to stock up on chocolate & cheese on the Saturday & spend the day doing something child friendly with my sister & great nieces on the Sunday.. So now to book the train tickets & hope there are no rail strikes.
Have been listening to an old comedy/detective series on 4Extra, starring our Jim, the actor John Rowe. He has the same cultured voice but obviously a lot younger, as the series was made 20 years ago. Quite entertaining if you can follow the plot.
As is my usual, it is on "surscribe", as I love to binge listen to this sort of series. Like the TA omnibus, the continuity always makes a difference, to follow the plot. This might not suit others, but I am enjoying Edge of Darkness, via Sounds. It is the experiences of a forensic phsycologist - 2 series. The first episodes might sound a bit dis-jointed, but as the episodes go forwards, these all make sense with surprising outcomes .
I’ve just seen the news that the actress Haydn Gwynn has died which is a shock as she was only 66. I loved her in Drop the dead donkey & the Windsors. I also saw her on stage with the RSC.
I too was shocked. She was an actress of many parts, and always so enjoyable to watch. I believe that it was from cancer, only diagnosed a few months ago... Such a shame.
SCD tonight…. My top choices Ellie and Angela R superb. Krishnan also much enjoyed and I still like Annabelle so they were my 💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼 votes this week!
I've liked Ellie from the start and she didn't disappoint last night. I was sorry that Amanda wasn't able to compete this week. Another thing that I noticed was that several of the contestants or their professional partners mentioned not having dance experience. I wondered if it was a surreptitious dig at Layton.
I thought Angela rippon was ok. Didn’t do any of the flicky legs between Kai’s legs like they usually do on an Argentine tango though. I liked annabel, and Ellie. Tbh I hadn’t noticed there was no Amanda. Why wasn’t she on? Craig was in bad fettle.
I thought Angela R was great and even MrA commented on how much better they’d done her hair. Ellie is a good dancer but I keep remembering her years on Corrie as Faye Windass. Somehow I can’t believe she is all grown up and an adult now, I keep seeing her character’s childish sulky face! And I did t realise Adam Thomas, who was also excellentt last night, is the younger brother of Ryan Thomas, also from Coronation Street. Whatever would Strictly do without soap stars?
I personally did not think that was a great AT, sorry Angela R. Ellie + Annabel are the one's I am routing for at the moment, though I thought Krishnan's QS was fabulous. Lauren is certainly making her mark, as a SCD professional with a dance partner. Still not keen on Luba though, and she is lucky so far with Adam..think she was set up to fail 🙅♀️ in a weird way.
Thank you very much ladies. It is kind of you to remember my birthday. I can honestly say that it has been the happiest birthday I have had in recent years. I spent my 80th ,3 years ago at the hospital with John! My elder son and his wife were due to have come for a visit arriving today from Canada but my daughter in law caught Covid a week or so ago so they had to cancel . Their lovely Labrador dog ,Willow was staying with my son's stepson on Prince Edward Island so that they could come to the UK and now that d in l is better they decided to go and fetch him home. They are about to land in Moncton and then go on to PEI . I am following their progress on flight radar. Tomorrow they need to drive back across Canada to British Columbia with Willow. Good friends from Buckinghamshire came to see me and said they would take me out for lunch anywhere I chose. Mrs P would not be surprised that I chose Wetherspoon's. What value! This evening I have partaken of some wonderful culinary birthday present treats and am about to have a wee dram of highland malt whisky. Cheers!
So pleased your day was such a success LJ - we have had some good meals in our Wetherspoons ( although not been in so much in recent times) but excellent value and all bar once some years back tasty food on pretty blue & white China plates. Ours opened a few years ago now and is always kept looking very smart outside. Quite a large part of the inside was a very old building of character and this enhances its internal appeal. Not so good health news from family- wish daughter in law back to good health asap.
Apologies for late-in-the-day Birthday Greetings LanJan - signing in problems. So glad you have had a lovely day with friends and a meal out. Sounds perfect. 🍷 💐
News Flash Just heard that Amanda Abbington has withdrawn from Strictly. No specific reason given but she apparently nearly missed the start of the competition due to a bout of food poisoning. Shame, she was doing well I thought.
The article that I saw said that no reason has been given. However she has apparently recently posted on social media mentioning depression. It is a shame that she is no longer able to continue whatever the reason.
I liked her but in the comments section in the paper it’s said that she is not a nice person. Stamps her feet if she doesn’t get what she wants. That was from someone who had worked with her. I can’t imagine she’s been easy to work with.
Perhaps her ex-husband Martin Freeman could comment on that. But I have no reason to judge whether she is a nice person or not. None of us do, I imagine.
I take what has been seen on social media, and in the papers about Amanda A. leaving Strictly, with a "pinch of salt". These love to create something out of nothing, to create a story. Whatever the reasons, these are private to her so should be respected. I did like her in Strictly with Giovanni though. Sorry if I seem OTT. 😪
Thanks for asking LadyR. My cold ( if that’s what it’s been ) is freeing up now, but I’m very low on energy. Yesterday I drove Lady up to North Hill and compensated for lack of walks over the previous day or so by doing what turned out to be a far too challenging walk for me. For the last half mile or so I do not know how I managed one foot in front of the other and had to keep stopping to rest. She has had a short potter to the park today. I’m not really eating as I can’t stand up for longer than a few minutes at a time. But I have kept both cat and dog fed.
You need to eat Mrs P. could you do an online order for some ready meals to keep in the freezer and take out when needed? I tend to keep some in hand for days when either I have been doing something tiring or for when I just can't be bothered to cook. Get better soon, and you too CC.
Thanks for asking Lady R. The pain seems to be easing very slowly, the painkillers are probably helping that. I'm awaiting the results of an MRI scan when I should have a better idea about what treatment is needed. I'm sorry to hear that you're still feeling so unwell MrsP. I'm sure it would help if you could get something to eat as Janice suggests. No problem with flooding here thankfully. Living on a hill has it's advantages even if I curse my sloping garden sometimes.
Thank you CC and Mrs P for letting us know how you both are, how long will you have to wait for your MRI result CC? Glad to hear you are having a little less pain now painkillers are kicking in even so a diagnosis of the problem and appropriate treatment will be good 💐
Mrs P could you manage soup and a sandwich ? - cheese would be filling and there is always good old toast of course (with butter maybe) and certainly a good idea to keep a few ready meals in the freezer, are you near an M&S they have some tasty ones (says she pushing her pension coffers 😂) That walk sounds a bit worrying best not go that far again for a few more days at least. You are a go getting Aries that’s the trouble - I know my mum was one 🫢 🤗 💐
Oh Lady R….. that last sentence of yours has given me a smile. Yes you’ve summed me up with those words. OK - thank you all. Apologies for concern…… last night….. very late but eventually…… I did about half the washing up needed, then cooked. A steak that I had defrosted, cut into small pieces with onions, red pepper, aubergine and celery. Added chestnuts and cooked some rice. It was enough for me to freeze half for another meal or to keep for later this week. Took Lady for a short walk to our local park yesterday. I will have some haddock for breakfast today…. ( yes I know it nearly 2pm ) but at least I am hungry !
I’ve given up on ready meals now because we have only Tesco Morrison and Lidle here. When in Stroud it was Sainsburys or Waitrose for ready meals. I did recently freeze up bolognaise that I had cooked. And I will soon get some casseroles into my freezer. I’ve recently seen that ‘ Cooke ‘ deliver here to a neighbour and spoke to the delivery driver, but am concerned that I won’t have enough room in the freezer for an order. I will have to go through their catalogue again and re think. I would like any opinions of Morrisons please. My friend in Nailsworth does all her shopping in Morrisons, but I’ve always had an ‘ attitude’ towards them. Something to do with the stores always looking scruffy to me. I do realise that what I view as scruffy, is probably’ homely’ to others. Opinions please. Also …… I see on local social media that in November locally caught fish is available down at the harbour. But I bet it’s early mornings only !
Oh and yes Lady R, soup and a sandwich is more or less what I’ve been eating and when I say ‘ I’m not eating properly’ that usually means I’m living on toast and tea. And the toast has butter galore with bovril !
CC - I do hope for you that you get some results very soon. I’m sure you must be very worried. But I’m also pleased that you feel able to let us know how you are.
Mrs P. I am a true lover of Bovril on hot buttered toast. It is a stand-by of mine also, often done as two slices of toast (home-made bread of course!), with bovril + sliced tomatoes, making it into a lovely hot sandwich..
Developments, Mrs P. Once I'd begun to calm down the dramatic dash to Guernsey got me writing again after 5 years. Unfinished book is now complete bar a few more illustrations, format was settled with publisher last week and I'm presently working on the Foreword. The book, called SHIPS PASSING, will be dedicated to the lovely pilot who unwittingly made such a huge contribution to getting it all going again.
I did a brilliant shop in S/burys yesterday, due to some fantastic offers. I got a lovely beef joint for half-price, plus many other discounted items. I saved over £22.00, so well pleased. Hope all who are suffering health-wise, just get things sorted out in a true + positive way. My thoughts are with you all..😍🤗
I had a lovely meet up with big sis today, along with coffee + danish pastries and a good natter... Take Care All. M + 🐈⬛
Well done, Miriam! My excursions to Sainsbury's are much more mundane, probably because I don't get the same fulfillment from cooking as you do. Guilty pleasures from Habitat are a different matter... ...
Went on a different walk today in woodland to avoid the worst of the rain. Found a veritable plantation of sweet chestnuts and have just cooked them and about to eat. Lady was gobbling them down on the walk. She very good at finding edible food particularly nuts. Yes I do get her away from acorns and conkers but can’t deter her from berries which she loves. I might return tomorrow when it’s due to be dry and take a container to collect more sweet chestnuts to stock up for the winter.
Sorry not many posts Mrs P. Two reasons from me : 1) nothing much has happened apart from having an almighty cold with constant deep coughing, just like when I had Covid last year. (Haven’t got any test kits and can’t get out to buy one). And 2). I tend to post more on the Ambridge blog and don’t want to be thought to be hogging the comments. However can’t remember if I mentioned one bit of good news - my French family have decided to visit us for Christmas as it is so difficult for me to travel nowadays. They will drive up from Toulouse and get the ferry to Southampton, a long trip but at least they will have no luggage restrictions. So now I’m thinking about arrangements and meal planning. At least that is an enjoyable task, in between coughing bouts! 😮💨😮💨😮💨
Sorry to hear about the coughing AP, hope it abates soon. Very little cough with my cold on this occasion. Good news for you about Christmas and you will enjoy the preparations I’m sure.
Mistral No news from you for a while. Are you battling with disappointment ?
Good news that you'll see your family at Christmas Archerfile. I hope that your symptoms settle down soon. I haven't been commenting much as we're just getting on with all the usual day to day stuff. I'm currently waiting for an appointment to see a spinal specialist to discuss my scan results. Thankfully, the pain has calmed down a bit and I've managed a few short walks.
Mrs. P, hello! I'm still here and not disappointed. Lots of viewings, but my house isn't sold yet, I don't think much will happen before Christmas. I have a huge (HUGE) flat roof over half the house, now with several leaks after various roofers have been up and down, pulling bits off and dislodging other bits, so a smallish repair has turned into a whole new flat roof replacement, costing a little bit of money. I am currently waiting for the scaffolder. but the roofer can't start until it stops raining, which will be 7th November according to BBC Weather. I have been a bit dismayed by various roofers and the estate agent telling me that I 'might get away with it' if people don't get surveys done etc. I don't want to get away with anything, just want to feel warm and dry and not dread the next storm... The good news is that the property I love is being let out as a short let over winter, the agents phoned to ask my opinion, and if I would wait, and actually I was pleased and relieved as it will be heated and not on the market for a few months which gives me a breather. Phew, it's an uncertain business isn't it? So, no worries, (apart from losing the roof literally over my head), and very busy getting ready for a short holiday to Jersey next week, and Devon before Christmas for an early mini-Christmas with family. All go here.
SARNIA, congratulations on your book, amazing :) I am going by ferry to Jersey, it is taking two days to get there from Durham, would have been a half hour (ish) flight from Newcastle. What a nit.
That’s all good news Mistral. I’m pleased for you that the flat is being let short term, and impressed that owner and agent have taken your view into consideration. Sorry about your flat roof situation and agree with your feelings re ‘ getting away with it ‘ ! Have a lovely break in Jersey and your mini Christmas. Things will start moving again next spring and your patience will be rewarded I hope.
When in town this morning I discovered a stall in our indoor market which is dedicated to recycling all sorts of things which I haven't previously been able to. Things like spectacles, tupperware plastic, medication blister packs, makeup and much more. I shall certainly be making use of that. Speaking of recycling, I've noticed that Sainsbury's no longer do the outdoor recycling, only the flexible plastics which they are obliged to do.
Sounds like a brilliant find CC. I’ve yet to find any place here for blister packs and they are piling up. Pleased for you that your pain has lessened a little and hope that your appointment re scan results will come through soon. Do keep walking to keep your spine as flexible as possible. Of course I don’t know your spinal problem but i have lived with a congenital double scoliosis for ever. My back gets very tired now although I’m still able to stand up straight, but notice the difference all of the time, and am forever having to sit down for a few minutes. You have my sympathy !
To precis my long, chatty comment which was almost completed for posting, when suddenly got message to reload as to a problem...and it disappeared. The main point was to a BBC Sounds I am still only half way through but really enjoying is:- Running Before The Wind - Catherine Czerkawaska.
I have been listening to that too Miriam. An intriguing way to tell a story. I just love listening to old plays on 4Extra while doing my afternoon jigsaws!
Thanks for the encouragement, Mistral. I must say, that flat roof sounds an awful burden. When my parents yearned to own their own home I don't think they had the first idea of how much a responsibility it would be. I have 'sagging' going on in my sitting room which I've been monitoring for a couple of years, but I think the time may be drawing near ... Newcastle to Southampton flight time by Embraer jet is an hour and 10 minutes, so I think half an hour ish to Jersey might be a tad optimistic. However, even that is a distinct improvement on two days! Hope you enjoy the break, anyway.
Sarnia: The problem with the roof was 'fixed' last year, not very well it turns out. The roofers have shown me photos and it is horrific, I'm surprised that it is holding out at all. This is the third re-roofing in 35 years, which I believe is about right, and left with the otion of risking it collapsing or actually getting it done, I have no choice, but once I was aware it was leaking, I became very hawk-eyed and noticed sagging that I would never have looked for. It is a responsibility, you are right, but the pros have outweighed the cons. I wish it could have held out for a little bit longer though. I understand your monitoring, the disruption of workmen everywhere and the sheer mess is horrible. I hope it will be done whilst I am away. Re Jersey, I am going by coach to Portsmouth which is why it is taking so long, I was determined to use the 'greenest' option, but it required an overnight stay. I was going to doze at the terminal, but it is my birthday on the ferry day, so pushed the boat out(!!) and booked into a Holiday Inn, including a cooked breakfast, so that will be a treat. I did think it would be easier though.
CC - I do hope your back problem is diagnosed and can be treated soon. The wait for test and reults these days make life very difficult. Mistral - disappointing that you have had no offers so far but the time of year doesn’t help. Flat roofs are always a problem, as we have experienced. But I do admire with your wish not to leave the problem for someone else to deal with. I think we are going to have to spend quite a bit on repairs before putting our cottage on the market. Mr A says ‘we’ll just knock a bit off the asking price’ but I wouldn’t feel happy selling in the knowledge that there are problems on the horizon for new owners to deal with.
Archerphile, yes, that is it exactly. Also, I would rather get estimates / do the work rather than knock money off when I don't know what would be fair, although plenty of people have said the opposite. I think it all depends on the situation, as I will probably be here for a few more months, I need the peace of mind. Are you definately contemplating selling? It sounds as though Mr. A. has come around to the idea. Would you stay in the same area?
“Do as you would like to be done by” or some such saying and on that note I totally agree with anyone being honest when selling anything be it house /car etc. ⭐️ to you both AP & Mistral
All the best getting the roof fixed Mistral. My only caveat is, is there any scope to extend upwards and then perhaps add a sloping roof? If this is something a potential buyer is likely to do, I suspect they'd rather pay a bit less for a leaky roof and save the money for the extension than pay extra to have a fresh roof that is only going to be taken down again very soon . But, as you say, you may be there sometime yet, and getting plans and permissions for extensions takes time. So perhaps the risk of Noah's flood outweighs the potential redundancy.
Hello OWIAS, no, the flat roof is already an upstairs extension, converted attic with extended roof, replacing the original pitched area with flat area. It was completed in the 60's when flat roofing was the thing. From the back garden, it looks barmy, it would never get planning permission today. I did ask years ago if it could be slanted, but for some reason it couldn't. From the front, it is a small ene terrace with traditional pitched/tiled roof, from the back it is a white elephant.
Re silent fireworks, I am torn...my dogs hated fireworks, I took precautions on Nov. 5th, but used to get irritated when people had random explosions, one dog used to try to burrow under the floor, it was pitiful. However, last night I was mixing my Christmas cakes when the racket started, so went upstairs and watched a lovely half hour display, now I am dog-free I enjoyed it. If they had been silent I would have missed it. I don't know why whoever it was decided October was a good time though.
Re Strictly, Ellie delivered again last night. I think that the pairing of her and Vito works well. With Bobby being so tall and lanky I don't think pairing him with Diane helps. She's quite a bit shorter than him. Anton mentioned my pet hate of all the messing about that some do before they start dancing properly.
Strange development re my pilot encounter. There was a Matthew on my flights who was known for kindness to his passengers, but it's a different name, and his photograph is not the man I saw.
It was a copy of my first book, and no, he didn't reply. However, seeing as it was the wrong name and the person I sent it to never existed, that's hardly surprising, is it?
It is, Mistral, it is. My daughter sent me a photo of the actual pilot who flew us and I didn't recognise him at all. The one I remember so clearly left the company in 2017 and had no recollection of ever meeting me. Yet he's the one I still see so clearly. I suppose I must have been more affected by grief than I though and my senses were playing tricks on me
It's the sort of stuff that sometimes happens to me when I've played a funeral, so I've got used to that over the years, but then it's not personal. I don't know what to make of this, because while whoever he was gazed and gazed at my brother's photo and name on the service sheet I showed him, I could smell my father's pipe tobacco, and he died when I was nine. ...and anyway, other people's dead relatives make themselves clear, they don't leave me with riddles!
Oohhh Sarnia how very strange. Did you travel alone? ( I can’t remember ) maybe you were sent comfort in the form of a dream, if so it certainly worked so treasure that! After all mysterious ways etc etc
No, Lady R, my son was with me, and when I sent him the photo I recognised , Daniel didn't know who it was.It must have been a very long dream in four episodes, because there were four separate encounters with the pilot, on two different journeys, and me seeing him on his way back from the air terminal when my son insisted that we'd just left him at the bottom of the steps. It rather suggests that we were seeing two different people and it's doing my head in!
Was the Matthew's surname Knight or was that different as well as the different appearance you saw? I think our deeper minds will try to preserve and protect us in times of stress, but having ready various books about there being a universal network of energy I do wonder if we can reach out into that network and make connections when help and comfort is needed.
Thank you,Janice. Matthew Knights is the photograph I recognised on LinkedIn, but he left Blue Islands in 2017. As July was the first time I'd ever flown with them, clearly we have never met. This has been almost like another bereavement, because the pilot who must actually have done the comforting is someone I've never seen before in my life, and I feel no connection with him at all.
The Matthew I saw, who looked like MK but wasn't, bore a faint, elusive resemblance to my father and brothers, but with the wrong colouring - too pale and fair. He was also very serious. I know that after bereavement sometimes senses can't be trusted, especially the sense of smell, but I really wouldn't expect a reaction as exceptionally strong as this for a brother who hadn't been part of my life since early childhood and whom I hadn't seen for nearly 35 years.

ReplyDeleteWe had an unexpected Zoom call from the family in France at 8pm so missed the last few competitors and was too late to vote by the time we ended the call. So we never got to see Krishna news reader. How did he do?
We thought Angela Scanlon was amazing with the Charleston so I would have voted for her at least. I’ll catch up on iPlayer this morning.

Proud to be Yorkshire.October 8, 2023 at 7:50 AM
He was quite good doing the Charleston to” money, money, money” song from Caberet.
Angela scanlon was really good, so was Amanda Abingdon with the rumba.
Nikita doing the jive was so flat footed. Think she might go.

Lady ROctober 8, 2023 at 10:20 AM
Agree Krishna was really enjoyable and is obviously wanting to do well such a lovely gentleman. Angela’s Charleston was another level 👏🏻
I only realised last night that young Bobby is the son of Jade Goody but now I know I can see the likeness! Also like a young smoother Mick Jagger 🤭
ArcherphileOctober 8, 2023 at 11:02 AM
ReplyDeleteI know this is showing prejudice but I really didn’t like seeing Nikita (from Ukraine) dancing with Layton dressed up as a woman. Somehow I have no problems seeing two men dancing together, as men. In he last series it was done very well, athletic at times and moving at others. But when one is pretending to be a girl and they are dancing as a pretend heterosexual couple it disturbs me. Sorry if this offends anyone, just my feeling.

My take on this is that men and women move in a different way. When I see a man dance dressed as a man I expect him to move like a man. When the man is dressed like a woman I expect him to move like a woman so my brain was confused when watching that dance.

I don’t watch - so have never commented, but intrigued by A P and CC posts above, it sounds to me that any problem you might have is about authenticity !
And I find your feelings quite understandable.

ReplyDeleteI’ve not done much exploring of the region in the time I’ve lived here, but have recently started getting myself out.
Yum I can smell and taste those F&C 🫢
DeleteCheshire CheeseOctober 8, 2023 at 6:30 PM
ReplyDeleteLovely MrsP 😍
I really fancy fish and chips for tea tonight now. It’s good that you are getting out and about now. I’m so happy for you that you got moved and have started another chapter of your life. I think it was very brave to move somewhere where you didn’t know anyone. Mind you, you get to know people when you’ve got a dog.
ReplyDeleteOur regular Monday morning cafe visit with the dogs…..we see Barney and mabel( cockers) with their mum and dad, Mitzi and her owners, then there’s Jane…..a little grey haired lady who loves all the dogs that go in the cafe and she gives them all a biscuit.
ReplyDeleteTo Strictly fans, I have just seen a photo of the lovely Amy Dowden on the red carpet at The Pride of Britain Awards. Two words - Simply Stunning.
Always devastating losing a family pet / friend the painful price we pay for love. When the hurt eases the happy memories will be able to flow 🥰
DeleteWhy is it Fish 'n Chips always taste so much better, when bought from the chippy in the open air?
ReplyDeleteMind you, I still miss the newspaper wrapping (now I'm showing my age 🙀)!
Absolutely agree Miriam - not the bit about your age though 😂
DeleteVery strange Wordle for me tonight.
ReplyDeletePut in my opening word, one letter came up yellow.
Used that one letter as my first for my next word, and EVERY LETTER CAME UP YELLOW. And it was so easy to see the correct form of those letters.
Very odd !
And it’s not 11.27
DeleteIt is 27 minutes past midnight.
Gosh that’s even better PtbY.
DeleteI’ve been rather good of late, only once in the last fortnight did I get to the 6th go without getting the word. Mostly in the region of 3rd and 4th lines.
I don’t have a regular starting word either. Something that comes into my head at that moment of opening Wordle up.
Lanjan 🍰 🥰
ReplyDeleteThe clock on here is I hr behind of course - but not for long!
DeleteOoooo! is it’s LanJans Birthday today?
ReplyDeleteA very, very happy and fun filled birthday to you LanJan. Hope everything is just as you would like it! 💐 🍷 😍
I thought Lady R's birthday was on the 12th October and Lanjan's on the 23rd. Have I got these wrong?
ReplyDeleteSorry folks that message was just for Lanjan she will know what it means, and Janice you do have correct dates!
ReplyDeleteWoke up groggy this morning due to being kept awake by high winds + torrential rain, throughout the night! It was not helped by 🐈⬛ landing on me in bed, soaking wet + wanting immediate cuddles!
ReplyDeleteGot soaked today just doing a S/market trip.
Waste not want not..😃
I wish you could cook for me Miriam !
DeleteWell I thought I might be the first to wish you a happy birthday ,Lady R.
ReplyDeletebut Janice is really on the ball.
Well done to her.
Lady R remembered that it would have been Mr LJ's birthday the day before her birthday .
I hope you have a lovely day tomorrow.Lady R
Miriam thank you for reminding us about "All Creatures Great and small "
Last week's episode had a real good heartwarming factor to it unlike P tbY's recommendation"Wilderness" !
The odd box contains fruit and vegetables that farmers can't get rid of easily because they have too much of that particular product or the fruit and veg are odd shaped
Last time I had a marrow and I made marrow soup .
It was lovely
This week I have parsnips .I love them roasted and kale which I like steamed plus other items.
ReplyDeleteSent the night before as I shall be out most of tomorrow and don’t want to miss sending you my very best wishes. I hope you have a really lovely day and lots more birthdays to come!
Happy Birthday dear Lady R - who remembers all of ours !
ReplyDeleteLanJan, it was me that went to Dulverton, and yes only one shop, currently a Co -op.
Happy birthday Lady R 🍰 💐I
ReplyDeleteMany happy returns of the day Lady R. I hope the sun shines for you. 🎉💐🎂 and a lucky 4 leaved clover to last throughout the year 🍀!
ReplyDeleteThank you all for your very kind birthday messages (blogger friends you mean a lot to me 🤗) Lots of phone calls coming in and e.mails and texts more to come later good job we went out yesterday for lunch. Certainly the better weather day had some hard rain this morning more to come tomorrow here I believe when I have to go for my jabs!
ReplyDeleteI washed dog towels yesterday then a small light wash.
ReplyDeleteAll soaking wet on the line.
Will need to put through spin and start again, but at least fresh rain has given a different rinse.
Many Happy Returns Lady R. Hope you are getting spoilt rotten today. 💐🍾
ReplyDeleteHaving enjoyed yesterday lunch out I am lounging around surrounded by flowers and all things chocolate, 🎂 wine and perfume so doing jolly well ptby 🤗 thank you!
DeleteApologies, I can no longer ignore what is happening in Israel, hence the change of profile picture, which may change again over the next few days.
ReplyDeleteI am not intending to introduce politics into this blog, it’s not the right place, but I am sure you will all understand my feelings at the moment. And the difficulty in commenting on everyday concerns when my whole attention is focused on ‘my’ people and the country I hold in my heart.
No need to apologise AP it is a terrible terrible state of affairs. Heartbreaking for us all but especially yourself.
DeleteIt is terrible Archerphile, human beings seem to never learn, a stupid, calculated act of aggression is causing so much suffering and hatred. Like Ukraine, will it ever end?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your understanding. I am torn between displaying the Ukrainian flag, as I have been since the beginning, or a Star of David at the moment!
DeleteI can only concur with the preceding comments. I am finding it difficult to watch or listen to news at the moment. I struggle to get my head around the atrocities that human beings seem prepared to commit,
ReplyDeleteI feel almost ashamed at the fact that I have “ switched off “ !
DeleteI have been obsessed with world news and current affairs throughout my adult life, but now feel, ( I am assuming it’s to do with age ) that I cannot bear to know what is going on with the inhumanities between peoples.
I too find it all distressing and unbeliavable, with what has seemed, a sort of genocide...😵💫
DeleteLady R. Belated Birthday Wishes..
ReplyDeleteContinue to enjoy your day, in whatever way you choose. 🤗
Thank you Miriam been a busy communications day which was great but now - 😴🫢
DeleteI too am appalled by what is happening in the Middle East .
ReplyDeleteIt is unbelievable that such atrocities are going on.
ReplyDeleteWish I ‘d been told that before.
I had both my jabs at lunchtime today. Left arm flu right arm Covid. Very slight ache in flu
Deletearm right now but only on certain movement. I had nearly all AstraZeneca in the beginning but Pfizer last time and today with the added ingredient to protect against latest variant.
We shall compare notes tomorrow AP 🤞🏼 for you….
Sorry to hear about your Covid reaction Archerphile.
ReplyDeleteWhenever I have been for either a flu or Covid injection I have been asked whether I am left or right handed.
Why is this?
I always reply that I am right handed but sleep on my left hand side so would prefer the jab to be in my right arm.
As I hope to be lying that way for a good few hours and not writing for that length of time I would have thought that was obvious .
I therefore had both jabs, one after the other at the same time in the same
Am I missing the point here?
Pun intended.
I’ve always assumed if only having one injection best to keep your dominant arm/hand free of any possible reaction but as one in each arm today I wait and see 🫢
DeleteI don't know if I missed the point but I did miss out the word "arm" in one sentence
ReplyDeleteThe nurse today said she always gives the jabs in separate arms in case there is a reaction in one. I must say, several hours after the Covid one my arm is not too bad, have been waving it in the air quite a lot, perhaps it has helped!
DeleteI can see the nurse's point which was why originally I decided to have the two jabs done at different times but when I was offered the flu jab at the same time it seemed like a good idea.
DeletePerhaps I have been fortunate in that so far I haven't had any reaction to either but it is something worth thinking about
Do many people get reactions ?
What sort of reactions?
It is a heavy aching arm or actually feeling ill?
I have had all 3 vaccine manufacturers, AZ x2, Moderna + Pfizer.
ReplyDeleteMy latest was Pfizer, for the second time, and this one gave me the least side-effects and these were very minimal.
Thankfully we had no ill effects after our Covid and flu jabs last weekend. Another job ticked off the list.
ReplyDeleteLady R - todays Arm Report - Covid Arm remarkably free of symptoms just very slightly tender and no itching - thank goodness, after last time! Flu Arm - bit tender last night but fine today.
ReplyDeleteMust say this new updated Pfizer jab is a thousand time better than the jab I had in the Spring.
Jolly good AP - just a little dull ache here and there for me but nothing to shout about and great full to have got both jabs over with in one!
DeleteYesterday I ended up seeing the surgeon who did my hip replacement because I developed a lot of pain around the hip and thigh a few days ago. He said that the hip is fine and thinks the pain is coming from a trapped nerve in the spine. He's referred me for a scan, meanwhile I'm gobbling painkillers for pain which is nearly as bad as when I had my hip replacement operation. So frustrating when all was going so well.
ReplyDeleteOh no. This is awful for you. Have you tried hot baths and stretching? I hope you don’t have long to wait for your scan. I would ring up the scanning dept and ask how long you’ll have to wait.
DeleteI’ve been getting a sharp stabbing pain occasionally in my leg in my scar area. Don’t know why. But it’s just momentarily so not going to worry about it.
Oh dear both of you fingers crossed that these blips are short lived. Pain is so debilitating.
Delete💐💐
So sorry to hear about both your post operative pain problems. A trapped nerve sounds very painful CC, I hope they can do something to help. And do seek help if the stabbing pain goes on PtbY, you don’t want to be stuck with it for ages.
DeleteI am having a frustrating day, as 🐈⬛ came in this morning with a live bird. This was behind and under my bed for a while, until 🐈⬛ appeared downstairs with it in her mouth again. To cut a long story short, this bird which is totally unharmed and can fly around, is now hidden. I know where it is, but can't get to it to rescue.
ReplyDeleteWhat I am ashamed about, is that 🐈⬛ who is also trying to get to it, keeps appearing with dust/cobwebs stuck to her black fur..🙀
Just hope it stays where it is, whilst Strictly is on!
So do I Miriam!!!
DeleteThe bird may be unharmed Miriam, but be warned it may die from shock.
DeleteI hope this doesn’t happen tho’ and that you are able to release it safely.
Sorry to hear of your pain CC - and hope the trapped nerve is soon able to be released.
I’ve just returned from avery nice evening with our local Male Voice Choir plus a group of Ukrainian women and teenagers performing some of their traditional songs.
ReplyDeleteA very good evening to fund raise for Ukraine.
ReplyDelete……..Or perhaps I’m just getting old? 😥
Are Unknown to me
DeleteI do agree about the noise AP we have some CD’s of the early days and the show was so calm then no strobes /graphics to distract either and the interview area is certainly more chaotic 🫣
DeleteHowever with the world as it is I feel I need it in my life for the colour and flippancy of the programme.
DeleteDancing wise I liked Amanda and Ellie.
Anton - I said exactly the same to Mr R at the time CC 🫣
DeleteI said the same about Anton. Hope he calms down a bit otherwise I’ll be going off him.
DeleteArcherphile, I’m with you with all the noise on the interview deck…gets on my nerves.
Those wigs they put on Angela R make me think of Dame Edna Everidge
DeleteYes, Shirley’s hairstyles have been a bit odd and very contrived looking, this series and Motsi always look ridiculous to me. But I have to admire Shirley’s bravery in carrying on doing the show with apparent ease. Apparently she is being trolled, had death threats and been afraid to leave home recently for fear of being attacked. Goodness only knows why - the internet has a lot to answer for these days.
DeleteTell Mr ptby moaning about SCD is part of the experience 😂💃🏼🤣💃🏼
ReplyDeletelol. Righto. I will.
DeleteTwo letters in correct position on opening word.
ReplyDeleteComplete word correct on second go !
Took me 4 go’s. Seems to be my default number nowadays.
DeleteI was away at the weekend and forgot to do the Wordle. So my 14 day progress towards regaining my carelessly lost 143 day streak has gone for a Burton. But I did get today's puzzle in 3 : )
DeleteNo posts today since PtbY early this morning.
ReplyDeleteWhere is everybody ?
I have been developing a cold over the last thirty six hours and now feeling pretty rotten. Off to bed pretty soon.
Hope you feel better soon MrsP.
DeleteA friend of mine used to recommend the 'Rum and Candle' treatment:
1. Light a candle
2. Drink rum,
3. Repeat 2. until you can see two candles.
4. Snuff out both candles.
5. Go to bed.
😊
Love it OWiaS.
DeleteGet better soon Mrs P.
Asleep mostly. Lots more to get my head round.
ReplyDeleteGood stuff, I hope.
DeleteSleep well.
ReplyDeleteMrs P hope you are asleep right now and will feel a little better at least when you do wake up and read all our greetings 🙏🏼💐
ReplyDeleteO how I love my BT 'super fast' full-fibre broadband. It's almost as quick as dial-up!
ReplyDeleteI don't think the hub was designed to work through brick internal walls : (
One day we'll book the engineer to come and get it working properly throughout the shoe. But there's still rather a lot of tidying to be done before he has any chance of accessing all necessary area!
Love it owias such honesty and it sounds very homely 🤗
DeleteBT don’t I’ve been going balmy with phone calls to them and tech people ringing me back to sort out problems 😡
Hope that you're not feeling too bad this morning MrsP. I agree with the honey and lemon to help.
ReplyDeleteSo pleased to hear that you are now enjoying your new rooms Sarnia, especially as you'll be spending more time in there with winter approaching.
I'm trying to distract myself from the trapped nerve pain by catching up with admin stuff and trying not to think about all the jobs in the garden that need doing. I'm hoping toget my Christmas cake made this week with Mr CC's help.
Yet again, 4 on wordle. Gone are the days of getting it in 3.
ReplyDeleteMine yesterday was appalling when everyone else just seemed to nail it- even when I had the first 4 letters got it in 5 in the end 😏 brain fog day! Don’t always get to do it everyday so out of practice maybe, says she grasping at straws to save my pride 😂
DeletePoor Mrs P, laid low yet again. May I join you in trying not to think about jobs that need doing in the garden, CC. Sorry to hear about the pain. I'm beginning to realise that I must have got off comparatively lightly with my ops.
ReplyDeleteNo news from me, apart from feeling so cold yesterday afternoon I turned on the small radiator in the lounge (note: not the big one) and wrapped up in a blanket and fell asleep! After having to spend ages, with instruction book in hand, trying to get the wretched boiler to come on for heating & not just hot water!
ReplyDeleteThank you for all commiserations folks.
ReplyDeleteNo better today but did sleep, and no access to lemons either.
DeleteMy GD did the same for her 2nd & 3rd year at Warwick Uni and, as fortunately some of her housemates are staying on to do Masters, she is staying put to do her PGCE.
Sarnia - so pleased for you now enjoying all the changes made in order to make it ‘your home ‘.
ReplyDeleteHope you’re shaking off your cold MrsP, MrNuts is recovering from a stinker, touch wood I’ve avoided it.
ReplyDeleteThe headache I’ve got is trying to arrange a preXmas family gathering with sibs, our offspring & their offspring.
DeleteWishing Mr Nuts well again and Mrs P I do hope you are still looking after yourself and recovering slowly but surely.
DeleteThanks LadyR - and KP, hope MrKP better soon.
ReplyDeleteYesterday was horrible, feeling very very unwell with a two hour period of excessive shivering eventually getting into bed with all the warm clothes on.
DeleteSorry to hear of people’s illnesses. I suppose it’s that time of year.
ReplyDeleteAfter my post the other week about picking up beech nuts all day long I finally got a garden vac with the review that it did pick up the beech nuts.
ReplyDeleteHopefully those with health problems feel better soon, and get help as and when required.
If any are affected by the storm, then I wish you well.
Me - a lovely, calm, warm + sunny day temp. 18C!
Lawns mowed, hopefully for the last time 🤞
To add, on doing a s/market trip today, I noticed how many were wearing masks again. Is this beginning again?
DeleteI have not been out for three days and do not have to go out until Friday when I take my car in for its service and MOT.
DeleteI shall be wearing a mask.
ARCHERPHILE
I’m not sure.
DeleteI actually had my flue jab ten days ago.
DeleteI hope that you will feel better soon MrsP. As the main reason for wearing masks is to reduce the risk of passing on respiratory infections it's considered bad manners not to wear one when suffering from respiratory symptoms in Singapore. I wonder if it makes any difference to their rates of infections.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your arrangements for a family get together KP.
ReplyDeleteMrNuts & daughter both full of cold symptoms, I’m just feeling washed out & I’m the only one of us with a positive covid test, weird!
ReplyDeleteOh dear KP covid certainly is getting about again isn’t it? Take care all of you 💐
DeleteHave been listening to an old comedy/detective series on 4Extra, starring our Jim, the actor John Rowe. He has the same cultured voice but obviously a lot younger, as the series was made 20 years ago. Quite entertaining if you can follow the plot.
ReplyDeleteAs is my usual, it is on "surscribe", as I love to binge listen to this sort of series. Like the TA omnibus, the continuity always makes a difference, to follow the plot.
DeleteThis might not suit others, but I am enjoying Edge of Darkness, via Sounds.
ReplyDeleteI've just seen that too. As you say, a shock.
DeleteOh, such a shame. I first got to know here in Peak Practice where she played alongside Kevin Whateley and have followed her career ever since.
DeleteI too was shocked. She was an actress of many parts, and always so enjoyable to watch.
DeleteI believe that it was from cancer, only diagnosed a few months ago...
Such a shame.
I loved her as camilla in the Windsors
DeleteSCD tonight…. My top choices Ellie and Angela R superb. Krishnan also much enjoyed and I still like Annabelle so they were my 💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼 votes this week!
ReplyDeleteI've liked Ellie from the start and she didn't disappoint last night. I was sorry that Amanda wasn't able to compete this week.
DeleteAnother thing that I noticed was that several of the contestants or their professional partners mentioned not having dance experience. I wondered if it was a surreptitious dig at Layton.
I thought Angela rippon was ok. Didn’t do any of the flicky legs between Kai’s legs like they usually do on an Argentine tango though.
DeleteI liked annabel, and Ellie. Tbh I hadn’t noticed there was no Amanda. Why wasn’t she on?
Craig was in bad fettle.
“Heath issues” was the explanation for Amanda’s absence and as per the rules a bye is allowed for one week.
DeleteI thought Angela R was great and even MrA commented on how much better they’d done her hair. Ellie is a good dancer but I keep remembering her years on Corrie as Faye Windass. Somehow I can’t believe she is all grown up and an adult now, I keep seeing her character’s childish sulky face!
DeleteAnd I did t realise Adam Thomas, who was also excellentt last night, is the younger brother of Ryan Thomas, also from Coronation Street.
Whatever would Strictly do without soap stars?
I personally did not think that was a great AT, sorry Angela R.
DeleteEllie + Annabel are the one's I am routing for at the moment, though I thought Krishnan's QS was fabulous. Lauren is certainly making her mark, as a SCD professional with a dance partner.
Still not keen on Luba though, and she is lucky so far with Adam..think she was set up to fail 🙅♀️ in a weird way.
Adam and Ryan Thomas are so alike, that when I saw Adam was appearing in SCD, I thought it was Ryan!
DeleteLanjan no matter what time is stated on here it is officially 00.03am as I write in order to wish you a very Happy Birthday 💐 🎂 🎈🍸today. - enjoy👏🏻
ReplyDeleteHope you have a lovely birthday Lanjan and that you can go out for a meal instead of cooking! 🥧🍰🎉🪻🌷🎁
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely Birthday Lancashire Janet
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday Lanjan💐
ReplyDeleteThank you very much ladies.
ReplyDeleteIt is kind of you to remember my birthday.
DeleteNot so good health news from family- wish daughter in law back to good health asap.
Apologies for late-in-the-day Birthday Greetings LanJan - signing in problems.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you have had a lovely day with friends and a meal out. Sounds perfect. 🍷 💐
News Flash
ReplyDeleteJust heard that Amanda Abbington has withdrawn from Strictly. No specific reason given but she apparently nearly missed the start of the competition due to a bout of food poisoning. Shame, she was doing well I thought.
I agree AP .
DeleteThe article that I saw said that no reason has been given. However she has apparently recently posted on social media mentioning depression. It is a shame that she is no longer able to continue whatever the reason.
DeleteI liked her but in the comments section in the paper it’s said that she is not a nice person. Stamps her feet if she doesn’t get what she wants. That was from someone who had worked with her. I can’t imagine she’s been easy to work with.
DeletePerhaps her ex-husband Martin Freeman could comment on that. But I have no reason to judge whether she is a nice person or not. None of us do, I imagine.
DeleteI take what has been seen on social media, and in the papers about Amanda A. leaving Strictly, with a "pinch of salt". These love to create something out of nothing, to create a story.
DeleteWhatever the reasons, these are private to her so should be respected.
I did like her in Strictly with Giovanni though.
Sorry if I seem OTT. 😪
Giovanni seemed to get on with her well enough.
DeleteCheshire Cheese & Mrs P how are you both getting on health / pain wise?
ReplyDeleteThanks for asking LadyR.
DeleteMy cold ( if that’s what it’s been ) is freeing up now, but I’m very low on energy.
I do hope CC and Miriam are safe from flooding and anyone else in vulnerable places near to rivers.
DeleteYou need to eat Mrs P. could you do an online order for some ready meals to keep in the freezer and take out when needed? I tend to keep some in hand for days when either I have been doing something tiring or for when I just can't be bothered to cook.
DeleteGet better soon, and you too CC.
Thanks for asking Lady R. The pain seems to be easing very slowly, the painkillers are probably helping that. I'm awaiting the results of an MRI scan when I should have a better idea about what treatment is needed.
DeleteI'm sorry to hear that you're still feeling so unwell MrsP.
Glad to hear you are having a little less pain now painkillers are kicking in even so a diagnosis of the problem and appropriate treatment will be good 💐
ReplyDeleteMrs P could you manage soup and a sandwich ? - cheese would be filling and there is always good old toast of course (with butter maybe) and certainly a good idea to keep a few ready meals in the freezer, are you near an M&S they have some tasty ones (says she pushing her pension coffers 😂)
That walk sounds a bit worrying best not go that far again for a few more days at least. You are a go getting Aries that’s the trouble - I know my mum was one 🫢 🤗 💐
Oh Lady R….. that last sentence of yours has given me a smile.
DeleteYes you’ve summed me up with those words.
Hopefully will have the result of the MRI early next week Lady R
DeleteCC - I do hope for you that you get some results very soon.
DeleteI’m sure you must be very worried.
DeleteNo posts on either thread for over 24 hours.
ReplyDeleteI’m assuming everyone is very busy leading their exciting lives !
Developments, Mrs P. Once I'd begun to calm down the dramatic dash to Guernsey got me writing again after 5 years. Unfinished book is now complete bar a few more illustrations, format was settled with publisher last week and I'm presently working on the Foreword.
ReplyDeleteThe book, called SHIPS PASSING, will be dedicated to the lovely pilot who unwittingly made such a huge contribution to getting it all going again.
My goodness Sarnia…… what very good news.
DeleteSee ! Exciting lives ………
Well done Sarnia!
DeleteIt's how I've heard war described , Mrs P - bursts of activity punctuated by long stretches of boredom.
DeleteI did a brilliant shop in S/burys yesterday, due to some fantastic offers. I got a lovely beef joint for half-price, plus many other discounted items.
ReplyDeleteI saved over £22.00, so well pleased.
ReplyDeleteGuilty pleasures from Habitat are a different matter... ...
Went on a different walk today in woodland to avoid the worst of the rain.
ReplyDeleteFound a veritable plantation of sweet chestnuts and have just cooked them and about to eat.
ReplyDeleteHowever can’t remember if I mentioned one bit of good news - my French family have decided to visit us for Christmas as it is so difficult for me to travel nowadays.
DeleteVery little cough with my cold on this occasion.
Good news for you about Christmas and you will enjoy the preparations I’m sure.
Mistral
No news from you for a while.
Are you battling with disappointment ?
Good news that you'll see your family at Christmas Archerfile.
DeleteI hope that your symptoms settle down soon.
I haven't been commenting much as we're just getting on with all the usual day to day stuff. I'm currently waiting for an appointment to see a spinal specialist to discuss my scan results. Thankfully, the pain has calmed down a bit and I've managed a few short walks.
Mrs. P, hello!
DeleteI'm still here and not disappointed.
DeleteI’m pleased for you that the flat is being let short term, and impressed that owner and agent have taken your view into consideration.
Sorry about your flat roof situation and agree with your feelings re ‘ getting away with it ‘ !
Have a lovely break in Jersey and your mini Christmas.
Things will start moving again next spring and your patience will be rewarded I hope.
Thank you Mrs. P. It's all a bit 'what will be, will be', I refuse to get frazzled.
DeleteWhen in town this morning I discovered a stall in our indoor market which is dedicated to recycling all sorts of things which I haven't previously been able to. Things like spectacles, tupperware plastic, medication blister packs, makeup and much more. I shall certainly be making use of that.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of recycling, I've noticed that Sainsbury's no longer do the outdoor recycling, only the flexible plastics which they are obliged to do.
I will so miss the Oxfam recycling bins.
DeleteSounds like a brilliant find CC. I’ve yet to find any place here for blister packs and they are piling up.
DeletePleased for you that your pain has lessened a little and hope that your appointment re scan results will come through soon.
ReplyDeleteThe main point was to a BBC Sounds I am still only half way through but really enjoying is:-
Running Before The Wind - Catherine Czerkawaska.
Just hope the two remaining episodes are as good.🫰
DeleteI have been listening to that too Miriam. An intriguing way to tell a story. I just love listening to old plays on 4Extra while doing my afternoon jigsaws!
DeleteMy idea of a perfect afternoon AP.
DeleteThanks for the encouragement, Mistral. I must say, that flat roof sounds an awful burden. When my parents yearned to own their own home I don't think they had the first idea of how much a responsibility it would be. I have 'sagging' going on in my sitting room which I've been monitoring for a couple of years, but I think the time may be drawing near ...
ReplyDeleteNewcastle to Southampton flight time by Embraer jet is an hour and 10 minutes, so I think half an hour ish to Jersey might be a tad optimistic.
DeleteCC - I do hope your back problem is diagnosed and can be treated soon. The wait for test and reults these days make life very difficult.
ReplyDeleteMistral - disappointing that you have had no offers so far but the time of year doesn’t help.
DeleteAre you definately contemplating selling? It sounds as though Mr. A. has come around to the idea. Would you stay in the same area?
“Do as you would like to be done by” or some such saying and on that note I totally agree with anyone being honest when selling anything be it house /car etc. ⭐️ to you both AP & Mistral
ReplyDeleteThank you Lady R. Apparently a lot of house buyers are economising by not having a survey done. Seems like a false economy to me.
DeleteAll the best getting the roof fixed Mistral.
DeleteMy only caveat is, is there any scope to extend upwards and then perhaps add a sloping roof?
DeleteRe silent fireworks, I am torn...my dogs hated fireworks, I took precautions on Nov.
ReplyDeleteRe Strictly, Ellie delivered again last night. I think that the pairing of her and Vito works well.
ReplyDeleteWith Bobby being so tall and lanky I don't think pairing him with Diane helps. She's quite a bit shorter than him.
Anton mentioned my pet hate of all the messing about that some do before they start dancing properly.
✔️✔️and✔️ CC
DeleteStrange development re my pilot encounter. There was a Matthew on my flights who was known for kindness to his passengers, but it's a different name, and his photograph is not the man I saw.
ReplyDeleteThe man I remember so clearly doesn't exist.
ReplyDeleteYou sent him something Sarnia, was it a poem, I can’t remember.
DeleteDid he ever reply ?
It was a copy of my first book, and no, he didn't reply. However, seeing as it was the wrong name and the person I sent it to never existed, that's hardly surprising, is it?
DeleteSarnia ?? Sounds very odd....
ReplyDeleteIt is, Mistral, it is. My daughter sent me a photo of the actual pilot who flew us and I didn't recognise him at all. The one I remember so clearly left the company in 2017 and had no recollection of ever meeting me. Yet he's the one I still see so clearly.
DeleteI suppose I must have been more affected by grief than I though and my senses were playing tricks on me
That's very weird Sarnia
DeleteIt's the sort of stuff that sometimes happens to me when I've played a funeral, so I've got used to that over the years, but then it's not personal. I don't know what to make of this, because while whoever he was gazed and gazed at my brother's photo and name on the service sheet I showed him, I could smell my father's pipe tobacco, and he died when I was nine.
ReplyDelete...and anyway, other people's dead relatives make themselves clear, they don't leave me with riddles!
Oohhh Sarnia how very strange. Did you travel alone? ( I can’t remember ) maybe you were
Deletesent comfort in the form of a dream, if so it certainly worked so treasure that!
ReplyDeleteIt rather suggests that we were seeing two different people and it's doing my head in!
And, yes, it was a huge comfort until this morning, when I discovered that it must all have been in my mind!
ReplyDeleteWas the Matthew's surname Knight or was that different as well as the different appearance you saw? I think our deeper minds will try to preserve and protect us in times of stress, but having ready various books about there being a universal network of energy I do wonder if we can reach out into that network and make connections when help and comfort is needed.
ReplyDeleteIn my own way that was what I was trying to say Janice so I agree with you 🫥🙏🏼
DeleteThank you,Janice. Matthew Knights is the photograph I recognised on LinkedIn, but he left Blue Islands in 2017. As July was the first time I'd ever flown with them, clearly we have never met.
ReplyDeleteThis has been almost like another bereavement, because the pilot who must actually have done the comforting is someone I've never seen before in my life, and I feel no connection with him at all.
The Matthew I saw, who looked like MK but wasn't, bore a faint, elusive resemblance to my father and brothers, but with the wrong colouring - too pale and fair. He was also very serious.
ReplyDeleteI know that after bereavement sometimes senses can't be trusted, especially the sense of smell, but I really wouldn't expect a reaction as exceptionally strong as this for a brother who hadn't been part of my life since early childhood and whom I hadn't seen for nearly 35 years.
