What a lovely image.. It reminds me of the Thorntons Easter Bunnies which I have bought for my youngsters, who I will see on Sunday for a full roast lunch. I am looking forwards to this event obviously, but myself and others, feel that it is like a Three Line Whip to attend by Big Sis... I would have just been happy for a lovely coffee morning with cakes + chatter with all + quality time with the kids. It will be a lovely event though, and feel grateful to be there.
This weekend is the calm before the storm for us. Eldest daughter and family descend on us on Easter Monday. The parents are having a couple of days together in the Peak District leaving the children with us. Here's hoping we get some decent weather!
Hope everyone has a happy and peaceful Easter. I couldn't believe my eyes on Wednesday when after weeks of rain I looked out the window and saw a snowstorm!
I worked hard this morning doing chores, and preparing a lovely smoked haddock with a mushroom and parsley sauce, topped with mash, meal. A lovely sunny morning but as soon as I got into my gardening gear, the heavens opened!! What to do - tSky Arts + the Les Mis 25th Anniversary Concert, though only watched the last hour. Brilliant!
Eureka ! After spending ages with a lovely young advisor yesterday who couldn't help me with my problem I contacted Apple . Apparently I needed to update something or other but the storage space was almost full so I needed to delete emails etc. Spent ages doing that yesterday . I have drafts going back to 2010 ! Didn't know I had any at all. PtbY perhaps because your IPhone is fine your IPad needs updating -says she who really doesn't know what she is talking about. At the moment though, fingers crossed ,I can get onto the blog.
Well done you. Glad to see you are back. It’s on my laptop that I can’t get on the blog but I very rarely use that. I always use my phone and keep the page open in my chrome section. I don’t have an iPad.
Just tracked my son and dil taking off from Reykjavik airport. It's an easy one because there's not a lot going on and planes only emerge one at a time, so easy to identify. Departure time and aircraft reg different from the info he sent me, not a problem here but was when they were on their way out from Gatwick.
Seems I was tracking the wrong plane from the wrong airport. Hey ho. Of course, he could have told me it was a different airport, instead of leaving me to make assumptions... ...
I have made hot cross buns today, which have been glazed with my own marmalade. They are from from round and uniform and TBH they look more like Baked Potatoes. I enjoyed the challenge. If they taste OK, I will take to family tomorrow...if not then the birds might enjoy them.
Happy Easter everyone 🐣🥰 May it bring fresh hope and peace of mind for us all. (Especially Archerphile) and those of us dealing with any type of worry and anxiety right now be it on our own behalf or that of others. Enjoy your Easter Sunday however and wherever you are spending it 🌷
Lovely Spring Sunny Morning, so dressed accordingly. However when arrived for family meet-up and lunch - cloudy with a chilly wind! Still, this didn't stop a great day wirh a fun Easter Egg Hunt.
Cold, wet and miserable here. We're busy getting ready for family arriving. Beef casserole's in the slow cooker and will be making a rhubarb crumble after lunch. It's definitely a comfort food sort of day!
Spectacular thunderstorm yesterday evening. I was beyond tired after a gruelling week and therefore not firing on all cylinders, so I was wondering why so many people outside were throwing wheelie bins around.
Looks like we might be lucky with the weather here tomorrow. I'm hoping that it's correct as we have tickets to visit Jodrell Bank. At lest there is indoor stuff to do there if it does rain.
Was supposed to be meeting up with Bath daughter and dogs for a walk today on Brean Beach lbut weather forecast of 70% rain changed our plans. So daughter with G daughter came to visit me instead. Lo and behold bright sunny morning and no rain till late afternoon. Wanted to show them Porlock and P Weir where I had found part of a Whale on the harbour beach on Saturday. As G daughter doing Marine Science was keen to show her. A gentle wander then off to drive through the pretty villages of Bossington, Allerford and Selworthy, but now all by car as tipping it down with rain. As we drove into Porlock tho’ G D recognised it as where she came for her silver DOE five or so years ago, and remembered the SW Coast walk that they did. She showed me a path leading from the harbour that I was unaware of but now keen to do myself. Said she has never forgotten this walk as so stunning, and this is the girl that did SE Asia last year ! Mentioning this as AP grandson might have done this DOE too, and possibly others GC. The whale has been washed up and down the Bristol Channel for months now and has disintegrated over time. The part that I found looked to me like the head, a huge bony structure. I was pleased to see it still there in the same position since Saturday.
Oh dear: it sounds as if the people in the next road are throwing empty wheelie bins at each other again and my poor aeroplanes are due to fly back to the islands within the next half hour. The sky is the colour of an old photograph, a strange shade of sepia.
Well, the second one's just gone. They're only 70-seater turbo props, but with engines roaring as they battle against strong winds they sounded like jets. The cloud is so low that even with lights blazing there was not a sign of them as the passed over my house. On a summer evening with the sun low in the sky it's a glorious flight, but it's not going to be a very nice ride tonight.
I have spent ages trying to sort out my dual energy bill. I knew that I was in credit by at least £140, but trying to find out if it was better to go onto a fixed tariff, or just reduce my monthly normal direct debit, has taken 2 hours. Thankfully sorted - just reduced by Direct debit by £30 a month, as was by far the best option available to me at this time. Just hope I have got it right. 😃
To add, I finally spoke to a lovely advisor on the 'phone who was so helpful, giving me lots of advice and guidance, plus the figures I needed. Such a delight to talk to an actual person. PS I played the "senior citizen" persona well, and deserve an Oscar. 🤣😂🤣
Spot on Miriam 👏🏻 A useful card to play so long as it is coming from us of course. Never forget Lanjans reaction to being called dearie during a 111 call she made 🤭
Thank you for your prompt…..I need to do the same and find out if I would be better on a fixed tariff. Are you prepared to say who you are with ? I’m with OVO.
I bit the bullet today and went into Taunton with Lady in the car. Was very lucky and found a parking space right outside the BS with M&S opposite so was able to do two tasks with Lady able to be reassured by seeing me go into and come out of both buildings. All fine then off to Topps tiles for the next task. On the way I was hit from behind when waiting to turn into a one way system. Lady was terrified and I lost my calm as a result of the knock and my concern for her. A nearby cyclist helped by suggesting and guiding me across the road into a driveway, holding the traffic while I did so. The couple in the other car also went there but denied any bump, and indeed there was no evidence on their or my car. And no aggression from anyone either. But I know I was hit, heard it and felt it. And when getting across the road something underneath the car was dragging. We did exchange details and I do intend to report it to my insurance tomorrow as well as visiting a garage to check the car. Once done my business at Topps I went to a pub ( very brave for me ! ) and after a pot of tea, decided that having a meal would set me up for driving home. I was right, I’ve made it, but am going to bed now with a sleeping tablet, as still feeling pretty shaken up.
Not looking for sympathy, just need to get it off my chest !
Well sympathies all the same Mrs P so sorry that had to happen when you were enjoying such a successful trip. One is always considered in the wrong if you are he one doing the hitting from behind I believe. What age were the couple? Make sure they don’t try to turn it onto you because of age. Do hope you had a good rest and feel better today. 💐
Mrs P. You must report this incident to your insurance. It is just a good idea to get this incident logged with them and also your account of it, whilst it is fresh in your mind. Believe me 😃😍
I did nothing last night, just went to bed and slept. When I looked at the information that the man gave to me it was simply his name, phone number and email address. No registration number !
I did phone the insurance and reported it, but without the reg number they cannot make any sort of claim on my behalf.
Thinking it through today, reflecting on what happened I’ve reached a conclusion, right or wrong.
I am absolutely sure I was hit, though obviously not badly since there was nothing on the front of the other car, or on the back of mine. However I was overwhelmed by the fear of losing Lady who was focused on getting out of the car on a three lane one way highway. The man was passive and hesitant. He was not English. The woman was the opposite, very cool and I suspect street wise. On this occasion I was not. I think she summed up the situation and told him to keep schtum, which he did, very successfully. I was certainly out of my depth, and I think they ( she ! ) took advantage of that. Of course I should have checked what he had written, but I didn’t and they were off while I was still trying to come to terms with my situation.
I have yet to have my car checked, but doubt if I will be in any position to do much if it’s damaged.
What a horrible situation Mrs. P. I really understand that a panicing dog came first in your thoughts. Did you get the helpful cyclist's details? They might have noticed more car details. Would it be worth emailing the other driver, just in case he has some sense of responsibility? Some insurance policies protect you against uninsured drivers, would that be any help? Really horrible happening on such a positive day. I don't know about anyone else, but these days I will dwell on incidents for days and get really unsettled over things that once I took in my stride. I don't know if it's age, experience or just worn out with all the horrible events over the last few years, but my resilience is exhausted, and it sounds as though that might be how you are feeling at present. I hope there is nothing too serious with your car, and that you and Lady soon feel more positive again.
Sorry you had such a nasty experience Mrs P. If you are lucky it might be just that your exhaust pipe has come adrift from its moorings ( you said it sounded as if something was dragging). This happens sometimes with our Chrysler when driving it up our very bumpy track, and it just needs pushing back in place. Do you have a strong friend/ neighbour who could look under the car for you?
Golly JANICE …….. I think you may have hit the nail on the head. I can see now that that may just have been what happened. Thank you !
MISTRAL …. You too have understood exactly how I’ve been, as you have found yourself. I think it’s probably a mixture of each element as you suggest, and yes, like you have found, I too am dwelling on this incident, yet unable to find the way to deal with it. I have thought of emailing him, but something is holding me back. I think it’s my perceived influence the woman might have over him and his deference to her. Also the kind cyclist walked away once the other people and I were talking. I saw him go and called out a thank you but don’t think he heard over the sound of the traffic.
I have now found the area where it happened on google earth, so when I speak to insurers again on Monday I can give that information. I will go to a local garage too on Monday and get them to look under the car as I know I did not imagine that dragging sound which is still very much in my head.
Does google earth show any cameras Mrs P? Could be an occasion when they can be of assistance. I agree that many of us tend to be feeling vulnerable more easily these days for the very reasons already stated and to hear these shared on the blog can be a great help as one then doesn’t feel so alone when these moments arise 🙏🏼 Take care 🌻
About the radio.... I haven't been much affected by the schedule changes because I listen to most things by choice 'on demand'. I am really bored with R4 output, likewise R4x, and have turned to R3 for a few weeks, what a revelation. I am really enjoying listening and accidently learning, right now I am listening to Jools Holland, I am bowled over. I am really delighted to have found something positive and uplifting from the BBC.
Mistral - like you I have tuned out of radio 4 over recent months and again, am listening to R3 and Capital too. I find I’m also playing favourite music on YouTube. In my teens I had saved up for state of the art technology my pride and joy being a TK Grundig tape recorder. I sold it to raise the money for my abortion and I’ve never had any technology to play music since. Never records or tapes or anything that’s followed over the decades. I have had access to others music players, husbands and later partners, but never my own. I have not even had a radio in the last year or so and am completely reliant on my IPlayer now. So like you I’m not much affected by the R4 changes. However since I’m a late riser, I might now catch the omnibus due to its rescheduling.
Lady R - I looked carefully on the Google world for a camera but could not see any. Probably further on at the junction, but that would have been out of the range of where the incident was. And like you I’m feeling that others sharing the increasing sense of vulnerability is comforting. Even five years ago I would have stood up to that woman. She wasn’t rude or aggressive but I felt intimidated by her. I’ve always been an exceedingly confident person and never intimidated by anyone. So the last few days, realising that I had been overpowered by her, has been disturbing.
Mrs P. I am glad you have informed your insurance and my strong advice is to get your car checked by a garage and ask for a written report, even if there is no damage. I am only erring on the side of caution due to what happened to me 7yrs ago. Briefly I literally knocked the car in front of me, who suddenly stopped going onto a roundabout. The driver was quite vocal to me, but there was no damage which was later proven. A long story short, 3 months later a claim for personal injury for this driver and passengers was received by my insurance. It was a fraudulent claim. esp as there were no passengers... A year later he was in court for insurance fraud and found guilty. Don't worry about this at all, as I was just unlucky, or rather he was! This is why get a garage report. In my case, it was proven there was not an impact, just a knock and so could not have caused any injury, of any kind. Just cover yourself...and so quietlty write down exactly what happened, your reactions both then and later, and anything that was said or done by that couple, while it is still clear in your mind. As said don't worry or stress out, get car checked, let insurance know it's find and then forget it!
I hope that you get this resolved soon and in a satisfactory manner Mrs P. Many years ago I was involved in an accident with a large delivery van. It was on a country lane and there was no one else around. The driver was clearly in a hurry and gave me his details then drove off. As he had come to a stop some way past me I didn't even get his registration number. My car wasn't drive-able and I was quite shaken so I went to a nearby farm house. They let me phone work (as I was on my way there) and my breakdown company. They gave me a cup of tea then took me back to the site of the accident and helped me to write down all the details that we could. The case ended up in court with me and the driver being cross examined by our insurance companies' barristers. I think that me having more details helped my case and the judge found in my favour. After that I've always kept a sheet of paper in the car with all the information needed to be collected in the case of an accident. I also put a disposable camera in the glove box (it was in the days before mobile phones).
CC What helped me was that I took photos of both cars, so things could clearly be seen, and into the other car ie no passengers were visible.. Mrs P. can still do so much to protect herself, by just putting things onto paper, dating it and letting her insurance know this. It is far better be safe than sorry. I am so mistrustful these days...It is just a sign of the times, sadly. 🤨
Mrs P. DO NOT freak out, just follow others thoughts, as to bad experiences. Who knows, that driver might have been a banned driver, uninsured or had no MOT on his car. He might have been drug-driving or even drink driving. As such he would just wants to stay hidden...🫰🫰
Thank you both M and CC for your experiences and advice. Writing it all down has always my advice to others and I should take that advice on this occasion. Thank you. I don’t have a modern mobile phone so taking photos is not an option for me. If I were to have such, I know very well that trying to factor in taking a photo of a situation would cause me even greater stress than the situation itself. Miriam- your tail reminds me of a situation I had a few years ago. At traffic lights on red not far from home I failed to put my hand brake on - on a hill ! - and rolled back into the car behind. It wasn’t far and the bump was small and there was not any damage to my car. I reported the incident to my insurers but some weeks later the other driver, a woman who claimed the car was her employers, not hers, also claimed that she had whiplash. My car was examined some time later and as far as I know the insurance company sorted it all out. But I do remember having a phone conversation where the insurance advisors felt as I did that the whiplash was a scam.
In a conversation this morning my daughter wondered if the car was the woman’s, but the male driver collecting her from hospital was not insured to drive it. I’m wondering too now !
Thanks again for advice and support from friends on this blog.
Our car got lightly bumped by a 90 year old coming off his drive and not stopping despite ongoing traffic. He was desparate not to tell the insurers because they'd stop him driving. Sorry, no way were we not going to report it, and him stopping driving would be A Good Thing. Anyway, our car was drivable, with just a dent and damage to the door lock. But we took it to be checked anyway. Turns out the suspension had been shunted out of kilter. Lesson learnt: damage is not always visible. So yes, get your car checked after a bump!
On a totally different topic. Niece + family in OZ are staying in a cottage on a farm, about 80miles away from their home. Whilst getting the boys their tea, she spotted something out of the corner of her eye. Quick reaction - empty a large plastic box full of lego, throw it over the wriggler to trap it and run to get the farmer! It was a 🐍about 50cm which was later identified as a non-venomus tree snake. She sent a 'photo of it trapped under the plastic box - I would have just run in the opposite direction 🤣🏃♀️ not that I can run these days!
I never listen to R4 now, well apart from The Archers obviously. I am still a lover of R4ex... I have heard some wonderful series + dramas recently which I have so enjoyed. One was, Twenty Streets under The Sky. This was a series of 3 one hour episodes, but no longer available on Sounds. I also enjoy the more silly comedy programmes, but these are my strange sense of humour. I can always find a lot to listen to and enjoy.
Really, Lady R? She picked it up via a comment I relayed from the 74Gear aviation videos that I watch. The (American) pilot was giving a student's tutorial about how to avoid coming off the end of the runway when landing. He said, 'Even if you're out in the country and you finish up in a field there might be a bunch o' cows in there hanging out with their friends and you really don't want to spoil the party. Also, the Chief Pilot would be very upset. She pointed me in the direction of the cartoon.
That would be STUDENTS' not STUDENT'S. I wish my phone wouldn't keep shunting my apostrophes around: I'm afraid its grasp of the rudiments of punctuation are sadly lacking.
Apparently upsetting the chief pilot in any airline will result in an invitation to 'meet with' him or her, an event which is guaranteed not to end well and therefore to be avoided at all costs. Possibly a black mark on your record to follow you round for the rest of your career. The bar is set extremely high.
That made me smile Sarnia. I like reading about your adventures in aircraftry and hope you continue. I haven't got much life outside Ambridge at present, so nothing to contribute.
OK, Mistral, here's another one just for you: I've just discovered that in the US there is an aircraft speed limit, as in, it's illegal to exceed 250kts when flying below 10,000ft. My source seems to be under the impression that this is a worldwide thing, but Aurigny and Blue Islands must be exempt as they come barreling in here every day at 7-9,000dt doing well over 300! Anyway, apparently if you do happen to transgress there is no point in trying to cover it up because your plane will snitch on you by transmitting it along with all the other flight data to the people whose job it is to process all this stuff. It's best to own up and face all the paperwork or it will be another summons from the Chief Pilot to explain yourself. The only one allowed to get away with it is the autopilot, because the plane won't snitch on itself!
Being based in the Islands they are subject neither to UK nor EU law when it comes to the dreaded 'terms and conditions'. Therefore, as in practice they're more aerial bus companies than airlines, as a passenger you're not going to get the automatic hotel arrangements etc when things go wrong. However, I have no idea what relationship they have with ICAO other than complying with international safety regulations. Could be that my source was mistaken and the speed limit's a US thing Personally, I'm more comfortable with the idea of rebellious aeroplanes: one Saturday, after returning from his school half-term skiing trip to Grenoble, the one I named JC after the author of his flightpic did a quick turnaround and disappeared off to Newquay, which was odd as I'd never known them go there before. I suppose there's nothing like a spot of surfing apres-ski!
Mistral, if you're serious about enjoying 'aircraftery' and are short of entertainment, I recommend the YouTube recordings of 'Kennedy Steve', Ground Control at JFK airport NY Often hilarious, but I warn you, they can be addictive! You'll soon be googling Speedbird, Cactus and Brickyard to find out who they are.
The twangy American exchanges are entertaining in themselves but the cultured voices and oblique humour of the BA pilots are something else, while the the Air France accents are downright - well, I'll leave you to find out for yourself .. ...
I have just seen a video of yesterdays total solar eclipse, as seen from the Space Station. It is strange, weird but fascinating, even though a bit "creepy"..
Where has every-one gone? I expect like me, there is nothing much really happening at the moment. This in my case, is due to the horrendous weather over the last many days. I just hope all are OK 🥰
Fed up with the rain, and with the wind that blew my carefully put together polycarbonate little greenhouse onto its side. Yesterday evening at intervals had 3 very heavy sounding aircraft go over quite low down. Unusual for here. Just occasionally we have jets going over low down practising manoeuvres from St Mawgan I suppose, but these were much slower craft.
Yes, Janice, utterly dismal. I have a garden arch awaiting assembly and the new season's plants are beginning to arrive, but I'm still waiting for that heatwave. Believe it or not I've had breakfast out on the deck outside the dining room twice this week after seeing in the planes against a blue sky with wispy clouds. Then I've barely had time to finish before the weather closes in and it's raining again. Whiling away the damp hours being entertained by YouTube videos of dippy American pilot Kelsey. Learning lots of new stuff that will never be any use except for deciphering the cryptic exchanges between Speedbird, Cactus, an angry puppy and JFK Ground Control. A Kuwaiti was instructed to follow the small Virgin and much to my surprise, Mistral popped up occasionally this evening. What were you doing taxiing around JFK behind Royal Air Maroc, Mistral?
Hello everyone. I am still reading most of the posts, if not contributing much myself. Life goes on much the same, with me struggling to find a point in anything. But….today is a good day and our 54th Wedding Anniversary, so something to feel happy about . We might even go out for a pub lunch and visit a garden centre which I always find very cheering.
I think Sarina would get on well with Mr A. He has been an aeroplane fanatic since his teenage years, which were mostly spent hanging around Heathrow plane-spotting. He can identify virtually every plane ever built, the details of every airline, the latest developments in aeronautics, all of which rubbed off on our son of course. He spends hours every day watching Flight Radar and although he no longer flys his glider ( for health insurance reasons) he still visits the club every week to keep up with what’s going on. I think I have been a aero-widow for most of our 54 years!
Archerphile, Congratulations on your anniversary. I hope you go out and having a stonking great lunch, lovely pud, and then buy something beautiful for you house or garden. Have a happy day.
Eh up everyone I’m here. Just on my hols…….one night in saltburn by the sea!! Old dog with us. Other 2 on kennels. Going for a massage and facial in 45 mins. Weather bright and breezy. I love a hotel. Think it’s because I’d never stayed in one til I was about 20. Sat in the bar with a cuppa, husband on iPad, Mabel asleep in her bed, awaiting time to be able to check into our room. I am also sick of the ruddy weather. 🌧️🌧️🌧️🌧️🌧️😢😢
Don’t think it’s working. There was a fire apparently. May take a walk on the pier in the morning if the tide is out. Can’t walk on it if there’s water under, it frightens me to death.
Some of my family are not far away, as spending a week of Easter hols. in Whitby. They are loving it but sent some videos today of a rock-fall onto the beach where they were fossil hunting.
Just catching up after our visit from family last week and all the subsequent jobs to be done. It was lovely to spend time with them as we don't see them as often as I would like. The 12 and 10 year old grandchildren were a delight for the two days they spent with us minus parents, much easier than the two and three year old a few weeks ago! I hope that you had a nice day for your wedding anniversary Archerfile and that you have enjoyed your break PtbY. Like everyone else I really would like a break from all the rain, I'm very behind with the garden. What's the betting the weather will improve next week when we're away helping middle daughter out while her husband's away on a business trip.
Know what you mean about children's ages. I too have two aged 10yrs + 12yrs, who are much easier than the younger ones! I had a long chat with the 12yr old girl, who is studying Romeo + Juliet as in the true Shakespeare play. She is loving it and talked so much about it. Luckily I know it well and we had a great discussion about it. It made a great change from social media etc..
Thank you Miriam and everyone for good wishes We went to a favourite pub in a village near here called Barton Stacey. Real proper traditional British pub grub. So many pubs round here have gone all posh and gourmet, with Thai this and Japanese that and items on the menu I have never heard of! So we had good old ham eggs and chips followed by sticky toffee pudding with half a pint of shandy for me! Lovely.
Belated Anniversary wishes to you both Archerphile 💐 lovely to look in and see a post from you telling us all about your lovely day today. I had not heard of the village you quoted but Mr R has. Have to agree regarding the difficulty of finding a good old down to earth English village pub but so good when it happens. I do hope your rise in spirits stays with you 🙏🏼
This is for Mistral 74Gear Kelsey is a cargo pilot. I froze when I watched him do his inside walk around in the cargo decks, checking all the clips and fastenings before take-off. I know he's flying a 747 with a multimillion dollar load, but thinking back to the sloppy lack of procedures leading to the 1999 Channel Express crash the contrast is shocking.
Sarnia, I had never even thought about moving cargo by air, it seems ridiculous to me, the trouble is that people are in such a hurry now, everything needs to be immediate. One of the great pleasures of being retired for me, is taking my time, so much so that my family call me 'dothery', when really I am 'relaxed'... The Channel air crash just typified the senslessness, imagine losing your life to deliver newspapers. I haven't seen the Kelsey clip, I will catch up. Re R.A.F. - I watched too many war films as a child on Sunday afternoon, still love The Dam Busters, although my views are somewhat different these days.
He flies a lot of medical equipment, overseas aid, armed forces paraphernalia as well as manufactured goods. It just never occurred to Channel Express that the aircrew should double-check the load for safety before take-off. Trouble is, if the national newspapers came by sea, they'd often never arrive at all.
Tired and dirty - but what a pristine front garden I have again, apart from the bulbs still dying back. Lawn has stripes on again, neat edges and a weed-free flower bed. The back has been mown. That was hard work as although the grass was long but dry, it was the ground - still so muddy. The back is on a slight slope, so it was fine going down-hill, but up-hill was hard going! Still it's short again although the stripes are a bit wonky. Now for the rest, as to edging and weeding the back garden, which hopefully will be done over the weekend, as is massive job. I have a lawn treatment service who come every 8 weeks or so. The 1st treatment this year was in late February. As a result the moss has died and gone and grass is lush + green (helped by the rain 🤣). The interesting thing is that my lawns are the only ones without flowering dandelions in. Think I will be stiff tomorrow morning...
AP. You have described my ideal pub. I still know a couple who serve good wholesome traditional british pub food, with a roaring fire in winter. These are small village pubs, mostly used by walkers/hikers and those who live locally.
To add - I have a box of XL free range eggs from Farm shop (and know exactly where these have come from). I have only used 4 so far, and all have been double-yolkers, so 🫰for the last two. These have made wonderful scrambled eggs.
Miriam, I so wish I could see your pristine front garden. I couldn't do 'pristine' if my life depended on it. 1. Garden's too unrestrained for that 2. I'm too unrestrained for that 3. Garden's too big for that!
Note to Sarnia - my mention of the Women’s football team manager was because, in my post about mr A’s aero obsession, I mis-typed you name as ‘Sarina’ - which is the name of the manager. She became quite famous last year for coaching the successful Women’s team. But you , of course are Sarnia and not Sarina! Apologies. 😌
Not at all, AP, I've never heard of her, so I had no idea what you meant! BTW, with all this talk of wedding anniversaries I've just realised that for me it would have been 57 years last week. How time flies... ..
I listened to something via Sounds today. Lucy Catherine - Halfway Here. Do I recommend, not really sure, but I found it intriguing, thought provoking in so many ways, sad, but it did keep me listening. Did I enjoy it, yes but also no in some ways.
Hey Mrs P! Here comes another one 🤭 be sure to enjoy 🎂 🫖 💐 Any plans or a day just pleasing yourself!
( I know there are other April birthdays and I send you all good wishes, however Mrs P shares her day with my niece and her partners “Anniversary” so easy as well as a pleasure to recall call to mind)
Thank you Lady R Yes a visit to The Valley of Rocks in hopes of seeing the wild goats who live there, and a roast at the hotel in Lynton with friend Simon and daughter. We are having a few days of normal and nice weather. Hope others are experiencing good weather too.
Good weather 🤣 😂🤣 It has been such a sunny day, but "sooo" cold never getting more than 11C and as for the strong wind!! Bread is taking ages to prove + rise today, as so cool, which is taking ages. As the saying goes - patience is a virtue - just hope it will worth it.
Bread is definitely not a good loaf - something went wrong but not sure why as was done exactly as usual. Still it will make good toast in the short-term, followed by plenty of breadcrumbs in the freezer, which are always useful.
It was a good day, lots of phone calls and texts and an e-card - thank you, you know who you are - then my second drive up Porlock Hill, and I did well apparently, then a walk on the moor with Lady. We had a roast at the Inn at Lynton, then a mooch around the town, which is very pretty, very continental ( known as Little Switzerland ) but clearly also a tourist honeypot. Everyone that I know who has been to the Valley of Rocks ( spectacular ! ) has never seen the goats, so I was prepared. But there they were, lots and lots of them milling around and some up on the slopes and rocks. We didn’t get out of the car as having hobbled around the steep slopes of the town my ankle was extremely painful and I was feeling depleted. I’ve enjoyed a quiet pot of tea on my own since home and early to bed soon after some cheese and biscuits. It’s been a lovely day.
But I still cannot fathom how I’ve made it to 82 !
Mrs P, how lovely! I DO like goats. Were there any golden Guernsey ones or just the usual kind? They are a feature of Greece, especially in the countryside, where cast herds appear from nowhere to surround your car and you just have to wait until they've finished going where they will. What a treasure is friend Simon - did you know him before you moved or is he one of the many assets of your new surroundings? As for the numbers, you're probably not 82 at all: it must be some kind of administrative error, like my 78, which is clearly nonsense.
I too love goats Sarnia, I’ve probably mentioned before that I was weaned on Queenies milk and she was still around during my early years for me to be able to remember her. When on a Greek island I took a boat trip hoping to see goats scrambling on the rock face, but they were not there on that occasion, and likewise walking on the downs above Ventnor on the IOW, where again they were hiding from me. So to see them yesterday was wonderful. As for their colours, I can’t say as they seemed to be a mixture of browns and greys. But I do have a feeling that some of them were a silky beige, maybe blond, colour. There were so many of them all running around. I will visit again !
lden Guernsey goat is very much an established breed, to the extent that farmers in England are now keeping them. I remember as a child there was an annual Sunday School picnic, when buses were hired and we made our way to L'Ancresse common, singing lustily with streamers trailing from the windows. On arrival we all went to swim while the feast was laid out on blankets for our return One year the Minister, Rev Isherwood arrived late to the party and went swimming on his own. Unfortunately for him, the common is also home to the aforementioned goats, and he returned to find that several of them had made their own picnic of his bathing towel.
Very sincere, belated, felicitations Mrs P! I did not log into our Blogs yesterday so missed the announcement from Lady R. I hope you had a truly lovely day and will continue to enjoy all the new (and old) places you are discovering and re-discovering.
Oh Miriam, I listened to Halfway Here to cheer myself up after the latest episode of Conversations from a Long Marriage. Two and a half hours later and I am in floods! Have you got any cheerful recommendations for us to listen to?
It was a hard listen, which was why I did hint at this. I did keep me listening though. I will find some cheerful ones! I too was surprised as to how Conversations ended. Am now listening to the latest Charles Paris offering. I have heard it before, but can't really remember it. Off to find something upbeat...
It is not what it was, definitely. I am surprised to see such things as Daily Service and Yesterday in Parliament in the daily schedule. If I wanted to listen to these, then I would listen on R4. I did read that R4ex will disappear in a year or two, so is this the subtle way on closing it down? I have also noted that very old/ancient shows are now being broadcast, which have very poor audio quality and content. I am putting my "soap-box" away...
Great news today, as the youngest in my family, will be starting in September in the local village school. Her place was confirmed today. I didn't think this would be otherwise though, as born and bred in the village. This will so help her Mum and Dad, in so many ways. I still can't imagine little'un going into pre-school when still 4 1/2yrs old. Mind you, she is needs it as is so clever and intelligent. No idea where she gets it from!!
We have been sent appointments for another Covid booster at our surgery next week. I didn’t realise they are still giving them, has anyone else been offered one or is it just for us extra elderly folk?
I had a general text reminder on Monday from the NHS and a link to where I could go but wanted my Surgery if possible as I leave Mr R at home. I rang and got through first time 🙃 and told they will start next Monday so said I would wait for their text but Sarah said oh I can book you in now if you like so noon next Monday. I then received a text from Mr R Surgery and the link gave loads of dates and times from next Monday so taking him at 1.40pm on the same day! However his Surgery is getting concerned at how hard it is for them to operate and sent out an e.mail with facts and figures with an attachment to send on to our local MP regarding this matter. Even so they have been so good with Mr R at all times with such friendly calls from the Practice Doctors when asked for help, and I make sure to tell them how grateful we are and how we admire what they do get through on all our behalf’s. It seems to lift their spirits if nothing else.
A kind and supportive thought is always so well appreciated. I always acknowledge good service in whatever aspect. Too many are far too quick to complain these days.
When will Spring really appear? I am fed up now with the strong cold winds and low temps. The sunshine is lovely but it is not warm. I am still in winter woolies, socks etc. and CH is still going.. Forecast is for 0C early morning tomorrow...Barry.
I do so agree with you Miriam. The bright sunshine is glorious but deceiving. I’m usually feeling spring is in the air in early March and yet here we are beyond Easter and my birthday and it still feels like winter, and that is despite having several vases of flowers dotted around me. The flowers seem to know it’s spring, so why can’t we ?
Just back to the Covid jabs for a minute: I got a text message from the surgery asking me to book an appointment for the jab, and was given a choice of appointments, at the surgery, on a certain day. So I booked one for 10am Later the same day Mr A got an email from the surgery with a link to the booking service. The link for him took him not to the surgery, but to a Pharmacy in Basingstoke for the afternoon of the same day! We thought this was daft - why could we not both go to the surgery, or to Basingstoke? Anyway, several phone calls later we are both going to the same place, 5 minutes apart!
Just another example of the NHS unable to talk to itself ARCHERPHILE. I regularly get a request on my mobile to fill in a form which I’m unable to access, but cannot find what department it arises from, because the system does not allow it to show the original source.
Was Mr AP just a general reminder which arrived as mind did ahead of your surgeries text? Even so I still keep getting the NHS general reminder text even though I have already booked with the surgery. The letter on Mr R surgery website that I spoke of yesterday (with a link attached to another one to send on to ones local MP) is on the front page of our local paper today - scary….
Got back from a visit to one of our daughters today. We went to help out with the start of term as her husband is away on business this week. It's been a while since I've done manic mornings getting children to school! Granddaughter decided which one of us was doing the drop off or pick up. I drew the short straw. On the first morning it was bucketing with rain and blowing a freezing cold gale. It's a ten minute walk to school and we were drenched. The next time we were caught in a thunderstorm with hailstones the size of small peas. At least I'd taken appropriate clothing with me. Mr CC got off more lightly with the weather but had a lot more jobs to do back at the house.
Been and had my, hopefully, last op on my eye this morning under local anaesthetic. I’ve been dreading it. Went better than expected and now tucked up in bed for the weekend to be waited on hand and foot. So far the only job Mr PtbY had to do he’s cocked up. Not a good start. All he had to do was put the washing in the tumbler, decided to press a different button on the washer so it’s started washing it all again. Honestly, useless trunk! Hoping for packet porridge for tea. 🤞 They did ask at the hospital if I had a responsible adult to take me home and look after me for the first 24hours, I told em “well I’ve got a husband but wouldn’t call him responsible!” Never mind, we’ll put him down they said. I’m beginning to wonder what sort of “down” they meant!!
Great news pty - well about your eye op anyway 👏🏻😁 As for the rest of your post well we’ve had a good laugh at poor Mr ptby expense 🤭 Hope he (and you) survive his weekend responsibility duties 🙏🏼 Just you be sure to keep on taking it easy for the weekend as instructed.
Good that it is done and over with. Had to chuckle at Mr PtBy. Perhaps you need to keep some ready meals in the freezer so all he has to do is put them in the oven at times like this. Hope you heal soon.
Not a bad night. Pain gone today. Bit bruised and eye doesn’t want to stay open. Now if I were downstairs I would be cleaning up and doing jobs. I can hear boyo sat watching something on the telly. Reckons he’s hoovered up but I’ve never heard the Hoover. Tea tonight will be his usual Saturday night pizza. Right having a day with an audible book with my earplugs in.
Wishing you well and all goes as planned. Audio listening is hard these days on radio, as quality is diminishing quickly. Things I have listened to and still available on Sounds are:- Eat and Run My Dad's Wardrobe The Blackrock Girl (2 episodes) Christmas Wings - written by "Lily". Holding Back the Tide (3 episodes) The Year of The Cat. If I am really stuck then I still go to It's a Fair Cop comedy show along with Life-lines and episodes of Behind Closed Doors.
..and not forgetting, episodes of Conversations. I still have others downloaded namely:- Mucking In (a series) Where This Service wil Terminate (another series)..
Finally a day without any rain. I got 3 machine loads of washing dried outside, the downside being that it's created a pile of ironing. I also managed to make a small inroad into the list of gardening jobs.
...I had frost again, this morning!! and cold all day. Still, the sun shone but no warmth at all.. CH is still so needed in the morning, as are my slippers and dressing gown.
My big wash will be done tomorrow, along with cooking a gammon joint, which will be shredded and made into various different dishes, plus making and baking bread. There is also ironing to be done! I am still getting half-price electricity for 5 hours on a Sunday, so will make the most of this Every little helps - I say this as I have just found out how much tax I am paying this year. My state pension is now over my single personal tax threshold. This is being taken from a small annuity, which I now only get 60% from.
I know what you mean. My share of my husband's Teacher's Pension is creeping towards vanishing point. I don't know who these rich pensioners are that younger adults are always binding about, but I'm certainly not one of them.
Yesterday, being sunny & breezy, I thought I would hang the laundry outside, so I dug out the rotary drier but was completely unable to find the tube to insert it into. MrNuts eventually found it under a lot of moss, after a lot of stabbing the lawn with his sheath knife. One way of aerating the lawn I suppose.
I have just seen photo's of the youngest in my family, sitting on a pony and on a lead rein for the 2nd time. She looks the part, but thought of Martha and her not liking Champion. A cross-over comment 😁
On this first day of Passover I can’t help thinking of the Israeli families, and those Jewish families here who will have family missing at their Seder table. Especially those who are still held hostage. This is the first time I can remember when the tradition of leaving a place at the table for a missing guest will be so poignant.
Just in Dr Surgery doing my 15 mins sit after Covid booster. Moderna given here today. Now to navigate the usual bloody roadworks to go home! New ones started today by the Dr’s for 8 weeks 😱 Hopefully I will not have to return just dropped of requested BP readings required for 6 mth check. Ooh dear getting old 🤣 Mr R at his surgery for same at 1.40pm. Right time to be released!
I put mine in and thankfully got an e-mail from GP. to say all was fine, and meds renewed, well for now. Picked up another 3 months supply from pharmacy today..✔️✔️
This pony is a "Bartleby" ie quite old. At the moment little'un rides it free of charge, as it gives the pony exercise with her Mum on the lead rein. I doubt that proper riding lessons will be in their budget.
I’ve booked my coach ticket from a local company for a day excursion to Winchester on Thursday. Suggestions please from Hampshire residents of an itinerary.
My usual exploration of a town or city is to do a figure of eight, on foot of course, but I’m not as able as when younger to be on my feet for long periods. Apart from the Cathedral and Alfred’s Statue I would enjoy the medieval lanes. I will study a city map and street view, but suggestions would be welcome, please.
Whatever you do, it sounds like a lovely day. I have been looking for a break away in September. I was given a brochure of coach trips. All I liked are not available for an independent traveller. I did say that I was prepared to pay for a room for two for single occupancy, but was politely told that this was not possible, company policy. Overseas trips are now so expensive for a single person. I have to add in taxi fares, the cat kennel bill, single supplement or if a "singles" holiday, the increased cost (ie single supplement is in the cost). I will find something..
Winchester centre is lovely to wander around, lots of interesting looking buildings, there is a nice walk along the river to the palace ruins, the cathedral is obviously terrific, the military museums at the top of the high street are interesting if that’s your thing. There’s also the city museum which is your fairly typical county museum ad a small museum in one of the old towers, all museums charge now. The tourist information office is in the Guild Hall which is pretty much opposite to the bus station. Word of warning the High Street is a pretty steep hill and Round Table in the Great Hall probably isn’t worth the price of admissio. Have a lovely day 🤞for decent weather
And there are some lovely little indépendant shops in that area, including an Art and craft shop that sells everything you could possibly want for painting or needlework (At least there was, I have not visited Winchester for some time, used to be almost weekly)
I imagine the area mentioned by Sarnia and AP - thank you - is the mediaeval section of the city which i particularly want to see. Some decades ago I employed an architect who had in the recent past done a great deal of restoration work in that area. Her description of what she had done led me to always want to visit. Hopefully on Thursday I shall finally make it.
It’s doing ok MrsP thanks. I’m having to put antibiotic cream in 4 times a day so seem to have cloudy vision most of the day out of it. I’m not very good at doing nothing though. Desperate to get back into the garden
Be patient- your time out in the garden will come soon. Your eye is more important !
I’m actually doing some gardening today, and managed some yesterday too.
Has anybody else been watching the developments with the military horses running amok in central London today ? Although I realise the awful danger to both horses and public, not forgetting vehicles damaged, I have to say that I find it utterly thrilling to see horses galloping riderless through central London. Makes me think of my dad who started his working life at thirteen taking newspapers from Fleet Street to Paddington Station and being in charge of a team of horses pulling the load. In later years he became a mounted soldier, and every year after watching the Royal Tournament we had to visit the stables at the back of Earls Court to admire the horses. Once I was an adult, my daughters were put through the same routine.
Seeing those horses reminded me of when Mr CC and I were in a riding club decades ago. We visited Greater Manchester Police's stables once and were put to work in the indoor arena making a lot of noise as part of the horses' training for them to get used to it. it made me wonder if military horses don't do that training as they are now purely ceremonial. One of the main things I remember about that visit was that those stables were the cleanest I'd ever seen!
I was lucky today. I shopped in the big S/bury's about 6 miles away and found a pair of jeans which looked good. I tried them on quickly, as had to leave my trolley outside. On leaving the changing room I, for some reason , ooked back. On the floor was my car key card which had obviously fallen out of the pocket from the jeans, I was wearing. As said very lucky to spot it. Still shop was good with savings of £21 eg toothpaste I use half-price, fish less than half-price, garden stuff 3 for price of 2.. I did well.
...not a black pair of same style + size. I tried another style, but didn't like and fit wasn't as good. I might just order on-line as can to click + collect nearby. My problem is size, as still buy a 10!! 🤣🤣
You lucky thing, Miriam! Sainsbury's jeans are a mystery to me, as in my size the waist comes up under my armpits and the legs are a foot too long. In the next size down the same complaints would apply - except I can't get them over my hips!
What a lovely image..
ReplyDeleteIt reminds me of the Thorntons Easter Bunnies which I have bought for my youngsters, who I will see on Sunday for a full roast lunch.
ReplyDeleteCheshire West was chilly last night + again tonight. I was out + about today and saw snow on the distant Welsh Hills, which are not that far away.
DeleteHope everyone has a happy and peaceful Easter. I couldn't believe my eyes on Wednesday when after weeks of rain I looked out the window and saw a snowstorm!
ReplyDeleteI worked hard this morning doing chores, and preparing a lovely smoked haddock with a mushroom and parsley sauce, topped with mash, meal.
ReplyDeleteA lovely sunny morning but as soon as I got into my gardening gear, the heavens opened!!
What to do - tSky Arts + the Les Mis 25th Anniversary Concert, though only watched the last hour.
Brilliant!
Eureka !
ReplyDeleteAfter spending ages with a lovely young advisor yesterday who couldn't help me with my problem I contacted Apple .
DeleteI don’t have an iPad.
Good to have you back Lanjan
DeleteI hope you all have a very happy Easter weekend
ReplyDeleteWell done LanJan ……keep posting !
DeleteJust tracked my son and dil taking off from Reykjavik airport. It's an easy one because there's not a lot going on and planes only emerge one at a time, so easy to identify. Departure time and aircraft reg different from the info he sent me, not a problem here but was when they were on their way out from Gatwick.
ReplyDeleteSeems I was tracking the wrong plane from the wrong airport. Hey ho.
DeleteOf course, he could have told me it was a different airport, instead of leaving me to make assumptions... ...
I have made hot cross buns today, which have been glazed with my own marmalade. They are from from round and uniform and TBH they look more like Baked Potatoes.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the challenge.
If they taste OK, I will take to family tomorrow...if not then the birds might enjoy them.
You never cease to impress in the kitchen Miriam 👏
DeleteHappy Easter everyone 🐣🥰
ReplyDeleteMay it bring fresh hope and peace of mind for us all. (Especially Archerphile) and those of us dealing with any type of worry and anxiety right now be it on our own behalf or that of others.
Enjoy your Easter Sunday however and wherever you are spending it 🌷
Second lovely day in a row. Bound to Chuck it down tomorrow!!! 🤭
ReplyDeleteAlready started here in our part of Hampshire ptby
DeleteLovely Spring Sunny Morning, so dressed accordingly. However when arrived for family meet-up and lunch - cloudy with a chilly wind!
DeleteStill, this didn't stop a great day wirh a fun Easter Egg Hunt.
Cold, wet and miserable here. We're busy getting ready for family arriving. Beef casserole's in the slow cooker and will be making a rhubarb crumble after lunch. It's definitely a comfort food sort of day!
ReplyDeleteSpectacular thunderstorm yesterday evening. I was beyond tired after a gruelling week and therefore not firing on all cylinders, so I was wondering why so many people outside were throwing wheelie bins around.
ReplyDeleteMiserable here. Looked on weather forecast and it’s raining everyday here for the next two weeks apart from next Sunday.
ReplyDeleteLooks like we might be lucky with the weather here tomorrow. I'm hoping that it's correct as we have tickets to visit Jodrell Bank. At lest there is indoor stuff to do there if it does rain.
DeletePouring with rain still!
DeleteCC Enjoy Jodrell Bank with family, as it is such a fascinating place.
Was supposed to be meeting up with Bath daughter and dogs for a walk today on Brean Beach lbut weather forecast of 70% rain changed our plans. So daughter with G daughter came to visit me instead.
DeleteLo and behold bright sunny morning and no rain till late afternoon.
Typical of the wether to do that to you Mrs P 😡
DeleteOh dear: it sounds as if the people in the next road are throwing empty wheelie bins at each other again and my poor aeroplanes are due to fly back to the islands within the next half hour. The sky is the colour of an old photograph, a strange shade of sepia.
ReplyDeleteWell, the second one's just gone. They're only 70-seater turbo props, but with engines roaring as they battle against strong winds they sounded like jets. The cloud is so low that even with lights blazing there was not a sign of them as the passed over my house.
DeleteOn a summer evening with the sun low in the sky it's a glorious flight, but it's not going to be a very nice ride tonight.
Kept thinking of King Lear: 'Tis a naughty night to swim in'.
DeleteNot much good for flying in, either.
I have spent ages trying to sort out my dual energy bill.
ReplyDeleteI knew that I was in credit by at least £140, but trying to find out if it was better to go onto a fixed
tariff, or just reduce my monthly normal direct debit, has taken 2 hours.
DeleteSuch a delight to talk to an actual person.
PS I played the "senior citizen" persona well, and deserve an Oscar. 🤣😂🤣
Spot on Miriam 👏🏻 A useful card to play so long as it is coming from us of course.
DeleteNever forget Lanjans reaction to being called dearie during a 111 call she made 🤭
Miriam -
DeleteThank you for your prompt…..I need to do the same and find out if I would be better on a fixed tariff.
Are you prepared to say who you are with ?
I’m with OVO.
I'm with British Gas, and have been for years. I got a good deal, which was cheaper than switching and going onto a fixed tariff, well I hope!
DeleteAmbridge Mrs P. I could have taken my monthly payments down by £46 but decided that this was too low, so went for £30 reduction instead.
DeleteThanks Miriam - I must get onto it.
DeleteI bit the bullet today and went into Taunton with Lady in the car.
Now that's a new experience you could have done without!
DeleteWell sympathies all the same Mrs P so sorry that had to happen when you were enjoying such a successful trip. One is always considered in the wrong if you are he one doing the hitting from behind I believe. What age were the couple? Make sure they don’t try to turn it onto you because of age. Do hope you had a good rest and feel better today. 💐
DeleteI think that precisely what they did Lady R.
DeleteMore below.
Mrs P..
ReplyDeleteWhat an awful incident. I hope you have reported this to your insurance, just in case.
How is Lady doing?
I wish you both well. Xxx
Mrs P. You must report this incident to your insurance.
DeleteIt is just a good idea to get this incident logged with them and also your account of it, whilst it is fresh in your mind.
Believe me 😃😍
I think I’ve been conned !
DeleteI did nothing last night, just went to bed and slept.
Thanks for the support.
What a horrible situation Mrs. P. I really understand that a panicing dog came first in your thoughts.
ReplyDeleteDid you get the helpful cyclist's details?
ReplyDeleteGolly JANICE …….. I think you may have hit the nail on the head.
DeleteI can see now that that may just have been what happened.
Thank you !
Thank you both for your kind and helpful words.
Does google earth show any cameras Mrs P? Could be an occasion when they can be of assistance. I agree that many of us tend to be feeling vulnerable more easily these days
Deletefor the very reasons already stated and to hear these shared on the blog can be a great help as one then doesn’t feel so alone when these moments arise 🙏🏼
Take care 🌻
About the radio....
ReplyDeleteI haven't been much affected by the schedule changes because I listen to most things by choice 'on demand'.
DeleteIn my teens I had saved up for state of the art technology my pride and joy being a TK Grundig tape recorder.
Mrs P.
DeleteI am glad you have informed your insurance and my strong advice is to get your car checked by a garage and ask for a written report, even if there is no damage.
DeleteMany years ago I was involved in an accident with a large delivery van.
DeleteMrs P. can still do so much to protect herself, by just putting things onto paper, dating it and letting her insurance know this.
DeleteWriting it all down has always my advice to others and I should take that advice on this occasion.
Sorry about the typo tail instead of tale !
DeleteOur car got lightly bumped by a 90 year old coming off his drive and not stopping despite ongoing traffic. He was desparate not to tell the insurers because they'd stop him driving. Sorry, no way were we not going to report it, and him stopping driving would be A Good Thing.
DeleteAnyway, our car was drivable, with just a dent and damage to the door lock. But we took it to be checked anyway. Turns out the suspension had been shunted out of kilter. Lesson learnt: damage is not always visible. So yes, get your car checked after a bump!
On a totally different topic.
ReplyDeleteNiece + family in OZ are staying in a cottage on a farm, about 80miles away from their home.
😱😱😱
DeleteI never listen to R4 now, well apart from The Archers obviously.
ReplyDeleteI am still a lover of R4ex...
I've just discovered 'The Far Side' courtesy of my daughter. 24 years late to the party, but then I always was a slow-moving vehicle.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the 🤣 Sarnia
DeleteReally, Lady R?
DeleteShe picked it up via a comment I relayed from the 74Gear aviation videos that I watch.
DeleteApparently upsetting the chief pilot in any airline will result in an invitation to 'meet with' him or her, an event which is guaranteed not to end well and therefore to be avoided at all costs. Possibly a black mark on your record to follow you round for the rest of your career. The bar is set extremely high.
ReplyDeleteI had an on-line delivery today, which arrived in a very large box, now empty but not yet broken down for recycling.
ReplyDelete🐈⬛ is fascinated with it!
Awful forecast again for tomorrow:-
There is a Warning in my area for high winds and torrential rain starting at 6.00am...
Ditto here Miriam. I've got a 6ft garden arch I want to assemble, but I'm waiting for that heatwave we've been promised.
ReplyDeleteIf I promise not to post about aeroplanes again will you all come back?
ReplyDeleteThat made me smile Sarnia. I like reading about your adventures in aircraftry and hope you continue. I haven't got much life outside Ambridge at present, so nothing to contribute.
ReplyDeleteOK, Mistral, here's another one just for you:
ReplyDeleteI've just discovered that in the US there is an aircraft speed limit, as in, it's illegal to exceed 250kts when flying below 10,000ft.
Thank you Sarnia! Am I correct in thinking that Aurigny / Blue Islands are just a law unto themselves? I like the thought of rebellious autopilots :)
ReplyDeleteBeing based in the Islands they are subject neither to UK nor EU law when it comes to the dreaded 'terms and conditions'. Therefore, as in practice they're more aerial bus companies than airlines, as a passenger you're not going to get the automatic hotel arrangements etc when things go wrong.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I have no idea what relationship they have with ICAO other than complying with international safety regulations.
Could be that my source was mistaken and the speed limit's a US thing
Personally, I'm more comfortable with the idea of rebellious aeroplanes: one Saturday, after returning from his school half-term skiing trip to Grenoble, the one I named JC after the author of his flightpic did a quick turnaround and disappeared off to Newquay, which was odd as I'd never known them go there before.
ReplyDeleteThank you Sarnia, I will check it out, I have got an addictive personality, so I might never come on this blog again!
DeleteThe twangy American exchanges are entertaining in themselves but the cultured voices and oblique humour of the BA pilots are something else, while the the Air France accents are downright - well, I'll leave you to find out for yourself .. ...
DeleteI have just seen a video of yesterdays total solar eclipse, as seen from the Space Station.
ReplyDeleteIt is strange, weird but fascinating, even though a bit "creepy"..
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteWhere has every-one gone?
ReplyDeleteI expect like me, there is nothing much really happening at the moment. This in my case, is due to the horrendous weather over the last many days.
I just hope all are OK 🥰
All gone back to sleep until it stops raining, Miriam - except for the aviation anoraks.
ReplyDeleteThe only anorak I have been wearing, has to be the one to brave the weather, just to put things into the re-cycling bins 🤣
DeleteI sort of guessed you wouldn't have the aviation kind.
DeleteFed up with the rain, and with the wind that blew my carefully put together polycarbonate little greenhouse onto its side.
DeleteYesterday evening at intervals had 3 very heavy sounding aircraft go over quite low down.
DeleteBelieve it or not I've had breakfast out on the deck outside the dining room twice this week after seeing in the planes against a blue sky with wispy clouds.
ReplyDeleteBut….today is a good day and our 54th Wedding Anniversary, so something to feel happy about .
Sorry, Sarnia - I meant you, not the coach of the England women’s football team!!
DeleteGood to see your still with us ARCHERPHILE
DeleteHappy anniversary.
PtbY seems to be the latest to be posting less and less.
PtbY, Are you lying down in a darkened room after shifting more flagstones?
DeleteSarnia, 10/4 11.25 p.m.
ReplyDeleteSurprised you!!!! I can pop up anywhere. Prefer the R.A.F. to Air Maroc though :)
Is that because the uniform is more flattering?
DeleteArcherphile,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your anniversary. I hope you go out and having a stonking great lunch, lovely pud, and then buy something beautiful for you house or garden. Have a happy day.
AP - England women's football team? Did I miss something? I'm afraid you've lost me!
ReplyDeleteAlso, do ask Mr AP about the angry puppy.
DeleteEh up everyone I’m here.
ReplyDeleteI am also sick of the ruddy weather. 🌧️🌧️🌧️🌧️🌧️😢😢
Looks nice PtbY enjoy your break.
DeleteWill you be going on the cliff railway ?
Don’t think it’s working. There was a fire apparently. May take a walk on the pier in the morning if the tide is out. Can’t walk on it if there’s water under, it frightens me to death.
DeleteSome of my family are not far away, as spending a week of Easter hols. in Whitby.
DeleteThey are loving it but sent some videos today of a rock-fall onto the beach where they were fossil hunting.
ReplyDeleteI hope that you had a nice day for your wedding anniversary Archerfile and that you have enjoyed your break PtbY.
Like everyone else I really would like a break from all the rain, I'm very behind with the garden. What's the betting the weather will improve next week when we're away helping middle daughter out while her husband's away on a business trip.
Know what you mean about children's ages.
DeleteI too have two aged 10yrs + 12yrs, who are much easier than the younger ones!
I had a long chat with the 12yr old girl, who is studying Romeo + Juliet as in the true Shakespeare play. She is loving it and talked so much about it.
Luckily I know it well and we had a great discussion about it. It made a great change from social media etc..
Happy Anniversary AP and Mr. AP.
ReplyDeleteI bet you are having a lovely day and am looking forwards to hearing all about it at some time.
Thank you Miriam and everyone for good wishes
DeleteWe went to a favourite pub in a village near here called Barton Stacey.
I do hope your rise in spirits stays with you 🙏🏼
DeleteLady R - ♥️
DeleteI've heard of Barton Stacey - it boats one of the cycling fraternity's favourite watering holes.
ReplyDelete54 years is an incredible achievement Archerfile. My icons have vanished but please imagine a mixed bouquet of 54 flowers of your choice.
ReplyDeleteThis is for Mistral
ReplyDelete74Gear Kelsey is a cargo pilot.
DeleteRe R.A.F.
DeleteTired and dirty - but what a pristine front garden I have again, apart from the bulbs still dying back. Lawn has stripes on again, neat edges and a weed-free flower bed.
ReplyDeleteThe back has been mown.
ReplyDeleteThese are small village pubs, mostly used by walkers/hikers and those who live locally.
To add - I have a box of XL free range eggs from Farm shop (and know exactly where these have come from).
DeleteI have only used 4 so far, and all have been double-yolkers, so 🫰for the last two.
These have made wonderful scrambled eggs.
Miriam, I so wish I could see your pristine front garden. I couldn't do 'pristine' if my life depended on it.
ReplyDelete1. Garden's too unrestrained for that
2. I'm too unrestrained for that
3. Garden's too big for that!
I just tried to post something different.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteYou always seem so well-organised.
DeleteNote to Sarnia - my mention of the Women’s football team manager was because, in my post about mr A’s aero obsession, I mis-typed you name as ‘Sarina’ - which is the name of the manager. She became quite famous last year for coaching the successful Women’s team. But you , of course are Sarnia and not Sarina! Apologies. 😌
ReplyDeleteNot at all, AP, I've never heard of her, so I had no idea what you meant!
DeleteBTW, with all this talk of wedding anniversaries I've just realised that for me it would have been 57 years last week. How time flies... ..
I listened to something via Sounds today. Lucy Catherine - Halfway Here.
ReplyDeleteDo I recommend, not really sure, but I found it intriguing, thought provoking in so many ways, sad, but it did keep me listening.
Did I enjoy it, yes but also no in some ways.
Now, that IS intriguing.
ReplyDeleteHey Mrs P! Here comes another one 🤭 be sure to enjoy 🎂 🫖 💐
ReplyDeleteAny plans or a day just pleasing yourself!
( I know there are other April birthdays and I send you all good wishes, however Mrs P shares her day with my niece and her partners “Anniversary” so easy as well as a pleasure to recall call to mind)
Thank you Lady R
DeleteYes a visit to The Valley of Rocks in hopes of seeing the wild goats who live there, and a roast at the hotel in Lynton with friend Simon and daughter.
We are having a few days of normal and nice weather. Hope others are experiencing good weather too.
Happy birthday Mrs P! 🍰🧁🎉🎈 🎁
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday Mrs P.
ReplyDeleteMrs P. Birthday Felicitations from me also..💐🍹🫖🍫 plus Lady 🐶.
ReplyDeleteGood weather 🤣 😂🤣
ReplyDeleteIt has been such a sunny day, but "sooo" cold never getting more than 11C and as for the strong wind!!
DeleteHave you had a lovely day out MrsP?
ReplyDeleteWhat was lunch?
On a different note there’s a new midsomer murders tonight at 8pm. Can’t wait!!!!!
Yes I am looking forwards to it as well.
DeleteSad though, that the other 3 episodes in this new series are not to be shown soon.
My day was made - I saw the GOATS - lots of em !
DeleteIt was a good day, lots of phone calls and texts and an e-card - thank you, you know who you are - then my second drive up Porlock Hill, and I did well apparently, then a walk on the moor with Lady.
DeleteWhat a treasure is friend Simon - did you know him before you moved or is he one of the many assets of your new surroundings?
As for the numbers, you're probably not 82 at all: it must be some kind of administrative error, like my 78, which is clearly nonsense.
Yes Sarnia it appears there are a lot of these admin errors floating around 🤣
DeleteSo glad you had a great day out Mrs P and hope your ankle will feel better tomorrow!
I too love goats Sarnia, I’ve probably mentioned before that I was weaned on Queenies milk and she was still around during my early years for me to be able to remember her.
ReplyDeleteWhen on a Greek island I took a boat trip hoping to see goats scrambling on the rock face, but they were not there on that occasion, and likewise walking on the downs above Ventnor on the IOW, where again they were hiding from me.
DeleteI remember as a child there was an annual Sunday School picnic, when buses were hired and we made our way to L'Ancresse common, singing lustily with streamers trailing from the windows. On arrival we all went to swim while the feast was laid out on blankets for our return
One year the Minister, Rev Isherwood arrived late to the party and went swimming on his own. Unfortunately for him, the common is also home to the aforementioned goats, and he returned to find that several of them had made their own picnic of his bathing towel.
..The Golden... ..
Deletethe opening got censored for some reason.
Very sincere, belated, felicitations Mrs P! I did not log into our Blogs yesterday so missed the announcement from Lady R.
ReplyDeleteI hope you had a truly lovely day and will continue to enjoy all the new (and old) places you are discovering and re-discovering.
AP. I so hope things are going well for you, Mr.AP and with your son. 🥰
DeleteI am not forgetting all your lovely family.
Do keep posting.
Remember as the saying goes - a problem shared is often a problem halved.
DeleteOh Miriam,
ReplyDeleteI listened to Halfway Here to cheer myself up after the latest episode of Conversations from a Long Marriage. Two and a half hours later and I am in floods!
Have you got any cheerful recommendations for us to listen to?
It was a hard listen, which was why I did hint at this.
DeleteI did keep me listening though.
I will find some cheerful ones!
I too was surprised as to how Conversations ended.
Am now listening to the latest Charles Paris offering. I have heard it before, but can't really remember it.
Off to find something upbeat...
PS I am also catching up with the many previous series of It's a Fair Cop - which always makes me laugh + smile.
DeleteI think 4extra has been rubbish lately. Last 2 nights I haven’t found a thing to listen to when I’ve gone to bed.
ReplyDeleteIt is not what it was, definitely. I am surprised to see such things as Daily Service and Yesterday in Parliament in the daily schedule. If I wanted to listen to these, then I would listen on R4.
DeleteI did read that R4ex will disappear in a year or two, so is this the subtle way on closing it down?
I have also noted that very old/ancient shows are now being broadcast, which have very poor audio quality and content.
I am putting my "soap-box" away...
...too add - Michael Bentine, Tommy Cooper, the Goon Show 🤷♀️😒
DeleteGreat news today, as the youngest in my family, will be starting in September in the local village school. Her place was confirmed today.
ReplyDeleteI didn't think this would be otherwise though, as born and bred in the village.
ReplyDeleteI didn’t realise they are still giving them, has anyone else been offered one or is it just for us extra elderly folk?
They don't offer them, AP, they tell me I'm due for one, but the nearest chemist to do them is four miles away on the outskirts of the city.
DeleteCovid boosters are being offered to those aged 75 and over and other vulnerable people
ReplyDeleteYes, CC, they usually are; unfortunately unless I shell out a fortune in taxi fares I have no means of getting to them.
DeleteI had a general text reminder on Monday from the NHS and a link to where I could go but wanted my Surgery if possible as I leave Mr R at home.
ReplyDeleteHowever his Surgery is getting concerned at how hard it is for them to operate and sent out an e.mail with facts and figures with an attachment to send on to our local MP regarding this matter.
DeleteI always acknowledge good service in whatever aspect. Too many are far too quick to complain these days.
✔️👏🏻✔️👏🏻
DeleteWhen will Spring really appear?
ReplyDeleteI am fed up now with the strong cold winds and low temps.
The sunshine is lovely but it is not warm. I am still in winter woolies, socks etc. and CH is still going..
Forecast is for 0C early morning tomorrow...Barry.
Meant - Brr!
DeleteI do so agree with you Miriam.
DeleteThe bright sunshine is glorious but deceiving.
I’m usually feeling spring is in the air in early March and yet here we are beyond Easter and my birthday and it still feels like winter, and that is despite having several vases of flowers dotted around me.
The flowers seem to know it’s spring, so why can’t we ?
Just back to the Covid jabs for a minute:
ReplyDeleteI got a text message from the surgery asking me to book an appointment for the jab, and was given a choice of appointments, at the surgery, on a certain day. So I booked one for 10am
Later the same day Mr A got an email from the surgery with a link to the booking service. The link for him took him not to the surgery, but to a Pharmacy in Basingstoke for the afternoon of the same day!
We thought this was daft - why could we not both go to the surgery, or to Basingstoke? Anyway, several phone calls later we are both going to the same place, 5 minutes apart!
Drs surgeries…..can’t organise the proverbial in a brewery !
DeleteJust another example of the NHS unable to talk to itself ARCHERPHILE.
DeleteI regularly get a request on my mobile to fill in a form which I’m unable to access, but cannot find what department it arises from, because the system does not allow it to show the original source.
🙄 😵💫 😑
DeleteWas Mr AP just a general reminder which arrived as mind did ahead of your surgeries text? Even so I still keep getting the NHS general reminder text even though I have already booked with the surgery.
DeleteThe letter on Mr R surgery website that I spoke of yesterday (with a link attached to another one to send on to ones local MP) is on the front page of our local paper today - scary….
I needed a "loo stop" at about 4.00am and there was frost on the car!
ReplyDeleteGot back from a visit to one of our daughters today.
ReplyDeleteMr CC got off more lightly with the weather but had a lot more jobs to do back at the house.
ReplyDeleteHoping for packet porridge for tea. 🤞
They did ask at the hospital if I had a responsible adult to take me home and look after me for the first 24hours, I told em “well I’ve got a husband but wouldn’t call him responsible!” Never mind, we’ll put him down they said. I’m beginning to wonder what sort of “down” they meant!!
Great news pty - well about your eye op anyway 👏🏻😁
DeleteAs for the rest of your post well we’ve had a good laugh at poor Mr ptby expense 🤭 Hope he (and you) survive his weekend responsibility duties 🙏🏼
Just you be sure to keep on taking it easy for the weekend as instructed.
Hope that all goes well PtbY 🤞
DeleteGood that it is done and over with. Had to chuckle at Mr PtBy. Perhaps you need to keep some ready meals in the freezer so all he has to do is put them in the oven at times like this. Hope you heal soon.
DeleteNot a bad night. Pain gone today. Bit bruised and eye doesn’t want to stay open.
ReplyDeleteNow if I were downstairs I would be cleaning up and doing jobs. I can hear boyo sat watching something on the telly. Reckons he’s hoovered up but I’ve never heard the Hoover. Tea tonight will be his usual Saturday night pizza.
Right having a day with an audible book with my earplugs in.
Wishing you well and all goes as planned.
DeleteAudio listening is hard these days on radio, as quality is diminishing quickly.
Things I have listened to and still available on Sounds are:-
Eat and Run
My Dad's Wardrobe
The Blackrock Girl (2 episodes)
Christmas Wings - written by "Lily".
Holding Back the Tide (3 episodes)
The Year of The Cat.
If I am really stuck then I still go to It's a Fair Cop comedy show along with Life-lines and episodes of Behind Closed Doors.
Dead Ringers is back next week, one of the so called 6.30 comedies that I like. I also enjoy It's A Fair Cop Miriam.
Delete
Delete..and not forgetting, episodes of Conversations. I still have others downloaded namely:-
Mucking In (a series)
Where This Service wil Terminate (another series)..
Finally a day without any rain. I got 3 machine loads of washing dried outside, the downside being that it's created a pile of ironing. I also managed to make a small inroad into the list of gardening jobs.
ReplyDelete...I had frost again, this morning!! and cold all day.
DeleteStill, the sun shone but no warmth at all..
CH is still so needed in the morning, as are my slippers and dressing gown.
My big wash will be done tomorrow, along with cooking a gammon joint, which will be shredded and made into various different dishes, plus making and baking bread.
DeleteThere is also ironing to be done!
I am still getting half-price electricity for 5 hours on a Sunday, so will make the most of this
Every little helps - I say this as I have just found out how much tax I am paying this year.
My state pension is now over my single personal tax threshold. This is being taken from a small annuity, which I now only get 60% from.
40% of this part of my monthly income, now each month, goes to the tax man! 😒
DeleteI know what you mean. My share of my husband's Teacher's Pension is creeping towards vanishing point.
ReplyDeleteI don't know who these rich pensioners are that younger adults are always binding about, but I'm certainly not one of them.
ReplyDeleteWatching the marathon this morning.
ReplyDeleteI feel so so homesick for my lovely city.
I have just seen photo's of the youngest in my family, sitting on a pony and on a lead rein for the 2nd time. She looks the part, but thought of Martha and her not liking Champion. A cross-over comment 😁
ReplyDeleteHow old is she Miriam?
ReplyDelete4yrs.
ReplyDeleteStarting that young she should become a really good rider.
ReplyDeleteOn this first day of Passover I can’t help thinking of the Israeli families, and those Jewish families here who will have family missing at their Seder table. Especially those who are still held hostage.
ReplyDeleteThis is the first time I can remember when the tradition of leaving a place at the table for a missing guest will be so poignant.
🙏❤️🕯️
DeleteAP ❤️
DeleteJust in Dr Surgery doing my 15 mins sit after Covid booster. Moderna given here today. Now to navigate the usual bloody roadworks to go home! New ones started today by the Dr’s for 8 weeks 😱 Hopefully I will not have to return just dropped of requested BP readings required for 6 mth check. Ooh dear getting old 🤣
ReplyDeleteMr R at his surgery for same at 1.40pm.
Right time to be released!
I put mine in and thankfully got an e-mail from GP. to say all was fine, and meds renewed, well for now.
DeletePicked up another 3 months supply from pharmacy today..✔️✔️
As I drove back from choir this afternoon I spyed the first orchids in full bloom on the verge of the lane running around the base of Dunkery.
ReplyDeleteThis pony is a "Bartleby" ie quite old. At the moment little'un rides it free of charge, as it gives the pony exercise with her Mum on the lead rein.
ReplyDeleteI doubt that proper riding lessons will be in their budget.
I’ve booked my coach ticket from a local company for a day excursion to Winchester on Thursday.
ReplyDeleteSuggestions please from Hampshire residents of an itinerary.
DeleteI have been looking for a break away in September.
ReplyDeleteThanks KP
DeleteI always felt that the most attractive approach to the cathedral is through the alleyway behind the Buttercross.
DeleteAnd there are some lovely little indépendant shops in that area, including an Art and craft shop that sells everything you could possibly want for painting or needlework
Delete(At least there was, I have not visited Winchester for some time, used to be almost weekly)
I imagine the area mentioned by Sarnia and AP - thank you - is the mediaeval section of the city which i particularly want to see.
DeleteSome decades ago I employed an architect who had in the recent past done a great deal of restoration work in that area. Her description of what she had done led me to always want to visit. Hopefully on Thursday I shall finally make it.
I think Thursday is market day.
DeleteOooooh goody !
DeletePtbY
ReplyDeleteHow is your eye ?
Pain gone I hope.
Improvement ?
It’s doing ok MrsP thanks. I’m having to put antibiotic cream in 4 times a day so seem to have cloudy vision most of the day out of it. I’m not very good at doing nothing though. Desperate to get back into the garden
DeleteBe patient- your time out in the garden will come soon.
DeleteYour eye is more important !
DeleteOne of the main things I remember about that visit was that those stables were the cleanest I'd ever seen!
ReplyDeleteStill shop was good with savings of £21 eg toothpaste I use half-price, fish less than half-price, garden stuff 3 for price of 2..
I did well.
Did you buy the jeans Miriam?
DeleteYes. Perfect fit and just £16. I bought blue but sadly not a
Delete...not a black pair of same style + size. I tried another style, but didn't like and fit wasn't as good. I might just order on-line as can to click + collect nearby. My problem is size, as still buy a 10!! 🤣🤣
DeleteYou lucky thing, Miriam! Sainsbury's jeans are a mystery to me, as in my size the waist comes up under my armpits and the legs are a foot too long. In the next size down the same complaints would apply - except I can't get them over my hips!
