Life in Ambridge

I still say that Markies threats were just that, so Jolene wouldn't identify him.
Something cheerful:- it could an engagement and so then a wedding, a wanted pregnancy to ensure another future Ambridge residence, but who would this apply to (Natasha + Tom = another Archer). Then, there is Ed + Emma setting up a successful business..
And best of all, Pip + Stella split up!! 🤣

My cheerful story line (which I've mentioned before) would be countryside-related rather resident-related, eg. the introduction of an endangered species to the Am - beavers or water voles. Fellow listeners convinced me that the AM might not provide the ideal environment for beavers, so I'm rooting for water voles which are the latest conservation project I've read about.

Failing that, there's my proposed archaeology-based storyline, which brings in new characters at the dig, and puts Ambridge on the tourist map with all that implies for the village's infrastructure. I got very excited when a team arrived to dig at Brookfield but the storyline fizzled out into another doomed relationship. What a waste of an opportunity!

ME I remember that now you have mentioned this. Wasn't there a young archeology student who took the eye of, was it Ben or Josh?.
Good thought especially with regard to the EV chargong centre, in that such archaeological finds could be unearthed, so everything has to be halted.
Now that would be a cheerful story. 😊

Yes, there was a university student on the dig, a sweet gentle girl who Ben began dating. Then Beth sailed in and Ben gave her the push. He said she cried and that was when I went off him.

Would George Grundy + Tilly Button count as something cheerful in your book, Miriam? I shudder to think what those two could dream up if they got together.
Or was it Molly? They seem usually to be joined together as 'The Button Sisters'. Is one of them really showing an interest in Master Grundy, or is it all his wishful thinking?

  4. Oh dear KP you have brought my prediction on the previous blog to life with this pic 🫣

  5. Oh dear indeed! No doubt George would be stepping in with a quote to clear the rubble with a JCB!

But seriously, I dread something like that happening and do hope the Editor will resist the temptation to do another Emmerdale Farm type story when a catastrophe happened to the village, wiping out half the cast

    1. Don't worry 😊
I doubt such an event will happen in Ambridge again, for quite a long while.
I think the Editor knows only too well the reaction.

  6. How about this for a Cheerful Ambridge Event?
Joy and others, revive a Mayday Event which includes things such as Maypole dancing, Morris dancing etc.
Then there is the May Queen or even King, but will it be Rosie, Keira, Henry, Jack as can't think of any others suitable candidates.
Attendants though:- Xander, Martha, Nova, Seren, Jack?
    Whatever...
It will be Bartleby who steals the show, as he transports The May Queen or King, in the ponytrap...

    2. Wonderful idea, Miriam. In the Cheshire town where I live there is a May Day parade and the whole town get involved especially the local school children and the town residents.
It’s very well attended with the parade and fantastic displays plus a fairground and fireworks display in the evening.

    3. When a child living on the outskirts of London, many of my cousins lived further out in what was North Kent, now Greater London where the parents had been re housed from bombed inner London.
Every year we went to the May Day celebrations where at least once my beloved elder cousin was May Queen.
That day was the highlight of my year.
A massive procession, the May Queen and her attendants, a brass band and many other floats, though that may be mixed memories as there was probably a carnival each year as well.
May Day might well be one of the oldest celebrations of man.
I’m pleased to hear that some towns and perhaps villages still celebrate it.

    4. Quite a few of the villages around us have May Day celebrations of the sort that you describe Esscee.

  7. Esscee You do know that I will be now searching for Cheshire villages that put on a Mayday event?
Joy and Mick seem to be reappearing in the not too far distant future.
I think Joy will become the new Lynda, but still not sure about Mick.
In my warped mind - Mick knows Markie in some way...as Mick was/is also into music at the same time.. But then is Markie also linked to Joy, as to her secret past??

I am still not yet liking George, as to his demeanor and schemes..but who knows?

    2. Good - Harrison saved and relaxing with Fallon. Robert is trying his best, in his new style. Ed + Emma so positive about the Tree surgery enterprise.

  8. I’m feeling pretty fed up with the new Robert.
We never heard very much from him in the past, and I’m not talking about the last year when it seems clear the actor must have been ill prior to dying.
And when we did hear from Robert his mild sensibilities were a joy to hear. And he was very sensitive to others feelings, often gently leading Linda away from putting her foot in it with other villagers.
Now it seems we can’t get enough of him AND he has become a nuisance, almost akin to being a busy body and not listening to others and clearly now unable to read body language.
This is a complete turnaround from the Robert Snell of old and I for one do not like this ‘ new ‘ characterisation.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I wonder if Robert’s character has been expanded to fill a possible slot if ‘Jim’ should leave the cast?

    2. I didn’t think I would be alone in my feelings about Robert Snell.
      And I’m glad I’m not.

Do we know Maryellen how old Jim is ?
We probably do but I’ve forgotten. I do remember that he had that b’day party, probably when he was eighty.
And how old is Robert do we think ?

I’m still concerned for Neil Carter who we hear from so infrequently now.

      Delete
    3. Again I am being different, but nothing new then 🤣
New Robert is just that, new.
He has been given a lot of airtime, so the TA listeners just get used to hearing a different actor and so recognise Robert again.
The wonderful Graham Blockley passed away so tragically, and as such Robert has been non-vocal for well over a year.
I still though think, if it was a wise decision to bring Robert back.
Lynda without her Robert, just might have been more interesting and in a good way.
      Now what about Roy?
This is a character who should be recast and so reappear...but thinking it won't happen 😭

      Delete
    4. Mrs P - we think Jim was 80 in 2019, the year of his birthday party, which would make him 84 (his actor is 83). Given Alistair was born in 1962 (and I don’t recall if his sister was older), either Jim married young, or we’re wrong about the 80.

      Some other ages for comparison:
Neil is 65 (actor is 85)
      Alistair is 61(actor is 69)
Robert is 80 - he mentioned it was his birthday on Friday (actor is 78).

So Jim and Robert are the same generation, as you’d expect from their friendship, and so are Neil and Alistair, which somehow surprised me.

I thought the village website would be a more congenial ‘hobby’. It was mentioned today so is still functioning but I don’t think we know who took it on after Jenny.

Maryellen - thanks for the information. The other option re Jim’s age and his progeny could be that when Jim was introduced as a character - Alistair had been with us for decades by that time - the TA team didn’t think it through well enough.

Like you I’m surprised by the similarities in age between Neil and Alistair, always thought Neil to be much older. Perhaps because Neil has been a favourite of mine since he came to Ambridge as a young lad.
Alistair came fully formed as a middle aged vet in my mind when he along with the doctor became a large part of Shula’s life.
Goodness me, how many decades ago was that !

    2. Mrs P - I think it may be Neil’s accent that makes him seem older tan he is - it’s the type of rural speech I associated with men of my father’s generation and earlier when I was growing up. It”s become less pronounced in later generations.

    2. I don't want Hannah to end up like poor Amy. She's worth much more than that. Alice is volatile, prone to making unwise decisions, often regardless of their possible effect on others. This is in her nature, the alcoholism is an added factor. Hannah is a much steadier influence. She doesn't have the Aldridge glamour, of course.

Separate point: if Martha had Foetal Alcohol Syndrome, should it have been spotted by now? Is it safe to assume the scriptwriters aren't going to take us down that router?

      Delete
    3. I occasionally wonder if Martha is going to show any obvious developmental issues, often Foetal Alcohol Syndrome is quite subtle, ADH or similar which is hard o pin down a cause, although Alice will beat herself up if any divergence from “normal “ appears

    4. A daughter with equinophobia and a mother with a passion for horses who runs a riding stable - could lead to problems if Martha doesn't grow out of it!!!

      Delete
    5. Perhaps not a phobia Maryellen since she is now prepared to feed the horse.
A horse, even the size of a pony, is huge beside a toddler.
Perhaps it’s simply a dislike or a slight fear of being so close to a large animal.
Because of the circumstance of both parents being used to horses in their lives and work, the apparent dislike is being turned into the genesis of a drama.

      Delete
    6. and didn't this only happen after the pantomime, when Martha saw something like some-one holding the pantomime horse in pieces?
At this rate Martha will have outgrown all the kit Chris bought her!

    7. You're right, Mrs P, but this is the first and possibly the only time I'll ever get to use the word 'equinophobia' even if it was slightly tongue-in-cheek! I sympathise with Martha as I'm frightened of horses too. dating from early childhood when I was given a ride on a huge carthorse without a saddle. I can still recall the seemingly huge expanse of slippery horseback with nothing much to clutch and the uncomfortable jolting of its walking pace. It was meant as a treat so I had to disguise my terror! The pantomime horse was no problem, I was old enough to know it wasn't real, but my younger sister had to be taken out until her screams subsided!

    1. I seem to remember from other stories that Ambridge has its own special micro-climate, different to other areas of the UK. There has been no mention of weather conditions, good or bad, for some time, or it’s affect on farming. despite what’s going on in the real world. No mentions of storms or snow or floods………..but to be fair, as the scripts are written so far in advance it’s not really possible to keep up with real Britain.

    9. The topic of sewage is interesting, but an unlikely conversation piece in TA.
I am thinking of the developing EV site, and how mains sewage will be connected to it?
They will need this obviously, but for some reason I doubt mains sewage pipes are nearby!

      Delete
    10. I imagine the EV site will have what the estate agents refer to as “private drainage “ ie septic tank like all the properties round me, regular maintenance required.

      Delete
  18. The Government has been introducing laws to try to encourage new properties to have
" treatment plants" which are very efficient digesters of waste. We replaced our ancient but beautifully constructed septic tank system with a Vortex plant and the water that enters the soakaway is supposed to be drinkable ( not about to try it though!). So I think it likely the Am and Rex are safe from any additional pollution from the EV site.

    2. I'm usually happy to listen to whatever is going on in Ambridge. But that was just poor!
Farce is great if done well. That wasn't, just hackneyed rubbish.
As for the Mayor's lack of tact ... Either you report the swapped cases as a breach of security, or you keep shtum. You don't embarrass your fellow guests.

My Dad was involved in a swapped case episode incident once. Someone on the bus picked up his, which happened to contain his page boy outfit. (Un)fortunately for him, the mistake was spotted and rectified. Years later, at my grandmother's funeral, long lost relatives kept coming up to him and saying, 'The last time I saw you, you were six and wearing a kilt.' Das was not amused. (Some time later he overcame his aversion to wearing the family tartan 😊)

More recently, our local mayor came to my annual Macmillan coffee morning. The emailed instructions included the form of words by which I was to introduce him. He turned up on my doorstep with a cheerful, 'Hello, I'm Nick, the Mayor'. Meanwhile, his driver doubled as minder. Not for the mayor but for his chain of office. I think £50,000 was its quoted value.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think Brad is meant to be extremely bright, with his special interest mathematics, and autistic. Autists can be lovely people and make loyal friends but tend to take speech very literally, are unable to understand nuances of speech, can't read non verbal cues and often feel overwhelmed if being bombarded by stimuli. Being bombarded by Lily's many instructions will have done in his head and confused him. I think the scriptwriters have done a good job of portraying that neurodivergent type of personality.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. And if there are any young people who are neurodivergent that are listeners then Brad will give them hope. If Brad can find a girlfriend who loves him, if he can hold down a job, if he can study and eventually go on to further study and hopefully success, then there is hope for me kind of thing.

      Delete
  30. Brad may well be autistic/neurodiverse but I think it's a big leap to think that this is what the script writers were trying to get across; much more likely they thought they were adding a touch of (supposed) 'humour' to the episode........in my view not hitting the mark!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with Janice.
One of the pleasures of being a TA listener for me has been the development of Brad over recent years.
And the performance of this young character has helped me to clarify my experiences with similarly challenged individuals that I’ve known from time to time.
I don’t know the background of the actor, but feel that a genuine understanding of the characteristics of a ND person is being brought to the fore within the scope of the script.
And too, IMO credit should go to the understanding of the scriptwriters in this instance.

      Delete
  31. I don’t remember Brad being at all inept when he worked at the Orangery so maybe it is a recent decision by the scriptwriters and not just a farcical aberration, dimwitted servants being a traditional ingredient of farce. I thought Lily showed remarkable restraint. She will become a good manager in due course, rather in her mother’s style, I imagine.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It always surprises me how differently people can hear conversations. I thought Lily was dreadful in her management of Brad both on Wednesday and yesterday, she ramped up his anxiety and blamed him entirely even after admitting that she couldn’t distinguish between the cases.

      Delete
    2. Well, I was disregarding the suitcases episode, which I still think was a farcical aberration (it was illogical from the outset - why would guests who Olive had stressed were important be left entirely in the hands of casual staff?),and particularly hard on both Lily and Brad. But I thought last night's episode was more worthy of consideration. Lily didn't blame Brad, just said it like it was, and took his assumption that she fancied him in his stride. We heard him voicing this mistaken assumption before, but it was news to her. She handled it well, he ended up happy and she accepted responsibility for him.

Sorry if that differs from other listener's perceptions! It's what I heard, I'm still not sure if the TA team are now 'pushing' neurodivergence, giving the programme's usual avoidance of long-term physical and mental disability.

      Delete
    3. Yes,the differences in what we hear and how we perceive what we hear, are interesting.
In every instance of hearing Lily since her breakup with her man ( sorry, can’t remember his name ) she has sounded to me as ‘ desperate ‘.
She flounders, sounds as though she doesn’t understand what’s going on, despite a confident delivery in her voice. She has an air of being confused while delivering in a voice exuding confidence.
I put this down to how the actor chooses to act the character that she plays. And likewise how the director wishes her to project that character.
For my part as this listener, the result is that I am permanently in a state of confusion about Lily. To me, she does not seem to know where she has come from or where she is going. ( and I don’t mean in a physical sense )
I simply cannot fathom her, and as a result I neither like or dislike her.
I think I simply dismiss her in my mind.

  32. There have been a lot of discussions, talks, programmes and news items in the past few months concerning this new (to me) term ‘neurodivergence’. Including much discussion during the recent Pilgrims series on BBC 1.
I was aware of autism, as my grandsons best friend is slightly afflicted but has qualified and been promoted to Senior Nurse in an Oxford hospital. I am also aware of Down’s syndrome and ADHT.
But the term neurodivergent is new to me.
I can’t help wondering if, due to so much airing of the subject, people are seeing what they think may be autism in anyone who is just a little different from the ‘norm’, has some other unusual behaviour or is especially bright.
There have been many people on FB saying Brad ‘must’ have autism but as far as I can remember it has never been mentioned on air. Are people just assuming it’s the case because everyone is an expert now?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Autism and ADHD awareness and diagnosis have greatly improved over recent years, particularly for girls, who tend to present differently for boys. I've also read of cases where a child has been diagnosed and, as a result, the parent has realised their own experience has been very similar, leading to an adult diagnosis for them too.
Greater awareness and provision is gradually helping neurodiverse people get the support they need in order to live comfortably and successfully in an environment that can often be overwhelming and confusing to them. (Autistic people may notice a lot of fine detail that neurotypical people miss; the flip side may be being unable to filter out extraneous input such as the irritating feel of fabric on your skin or the insistent hum of the fluorescent lighting.)
Too much information to put into a short blog post, I recommend a visit to The National Autistic Society website: www.autism.org.uk. Do take a look at 'Stories from the Spectrum' under 'Advice and Guidance' to catch a glimpse of the positives of autism.

I would agree that Brad shows autistic traits. But he's doing well at school, and maths is a comfortable environment for him, so his teachers may not have picked it up. Nobody else in Ambridge has autism, it seems, and it's probably not on Tracey's radar. A diagnosis would help him understand himself better and open up access to support, particularly as he navigates the additional challenges of university study.

  33. Oh yes, I came in to comment on Alice. Thank goodness she has admitted she cannot keep helping Harry. Let's hope she is able to stick to her guns.
At the very least, shouldn't she have spoken to her own mentor about the situation? Although she knows exactly what her mentor would tell her, which is probably why she hasn't informed her ...

A difficult aspect of wanting to help, is recognising when you are not the right person to give the support, and being willing to hand the task on to someone in a better position to help.

  35. You're right, Archerphile - Brad has neve been diagnosed as autistic, because Tracy has never noticed and done anything about his problems with social relationships (just as she never noticed and did anything about Chelsea's adenoids!) It was Brad who confided his problems to Chelsea. To be fair to Tracy, they could be put down to the insecurity and social inadequacy, of adolescence, especially as his school hasn't picked up on a problem either. His failings in this respect certainly can't be blamed on Lily, they predate his acquaintance with her.

Last week's episodes took Brad's inadequacy to a new level, introducing problems with memory and reasoning we have not encountered before, either at home, school or work. I think it unfair and inaccurate to blame any of this on Lily, whose instructions were clear and simple - a 12-year-old could have followed them. given the necessary muscle power! It was the same next day, when the pressure was off for them both. Brad's failings can no longer be put down to the social inadequacy of adolescence. (Please substitute 'divergence 'for 'failings' if failings offends.)

I appreciate you are not joining in the discussion, Miriam, but would be interested to know how you think Lily is manipulating Brad, and more importantly, to what end?)

  36. OWIAS Thank-you for your well written comment. My elder daughter was diagnosed as on the autistic spectrum in her teens and I started reading up on the subject. It was a real eye opener, having read various child development books and felt they didn’t seem relevant to her or my own remembered experience, suddenly things made more sense. Neither my husband or I have ever received a formal diagnosis, we have both had successful careers and live our lives in a way we are both comfortable with. There are lots of things we don’t do which might be construed as missing out by others but the effort and stress involved mean we choose to avoid these. The continual processing is tiring and we both take quite a lot of downtime to decompress. I suspect that both Jakob and Brad are on the spectrum, both able to learn how to get by in the world and hopefully find a level of contentment.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Thank you so much both OWIAS and KPNuts xx

  38. Ah yes, I'd forgotten about Jakob!

Having an explanation makes a big difference, doesn't it, KPnuts? I hope you daughter received, and is receiving, the support she needs to thrive.
My, very generalised, comparison is that neurotypical brains run on Windows whereas neurodiverse ones run on the Mac operating system. Neither is better or worse, but communication between them can be challenging.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Are we suggesting then, that the Editor decided to have two characters who are on the spectrum, or is it just listeners who are categorising them as that?
Of course it could just be that they are acknowledging the fact that there are many different types of people in the world, and why should Ambridge be any different?
I am confused. T A used to be so much simpler in the days of Dan and Doris!

    1. There is a series of teen-fiction books about Geek Girl.
When the first novel was published, it won praise from autism charities for its sympathetic portrayal of an autistic main character. The author, Holly Smale, was initially quite annoyed, pointing out she hadn't created an autistic heroine, simply written a story that reflected her own teenage experience. Later, she investigated further and was diagnosed with autism herself.
So it could be that a writer's own experience is being unconsciously channelled into these two characters. Or there could indeed be a deliberate attempt to introduce some neurodiversity into Ambridge - statistically there should be some autistic people within reach of the Am.
We've mentioned before the lack of disability representation in The Archers. If Jakob and Brad are a step towards correcting this then I'm glad. Jakob has found his niche, is good at his job, and he and his colleagues have learnt to appreciate each other's personalities. Brad is thriving academically and has a good relationship with Mia. But perhaps his autism makes it easier for George to manipulate and take advantage of him. He needs support to see this and stand up to the guy. I'd also like to see how he copes at university - support and appropriate provision are available but the nature of autism means that the students who would benefit from it don't always seek it out : (

Yes, life was much simpler in Dan and Doris' day. Unless you were a square peg in a round hole in which case you just had to like it or lump it. (Preferably quietly and without drawing attention to yourself.)

  40. Why I said that I do not think that Brad is autistic, is that IF he is showing any such tendencies, it seems more like Asperger's Syndrome.
Although there can be similarities, there are also many differences..
    That's my thought!
To me Brad is just a very intelligent youngster who is shy and loves studying.
At least Brad has one thing George doesn't, which is Mia and their successful relationship together 😉😉😁

  41. Can I second Janice's thanks to KPnuts and OWIAS for their illuminating posts which have made me reexamine my own life experience as well as adding to my limited knowlegde of ND and its effects..

Going back to Brad and possibly Jakob too, how the TA team present this topic, if that is what they intend, clearly depends on editorial priorities, dramatic and logistical constraints, and the understanding and skill of the scriptwriters. I thought the early episodes when Brad confided in Chelsea and when they went to explore university options were sensitively and knowledgeably handled, plus his relationship with Mia, all positive developments. But I felt last week's episodes were a grave mistake: introducing other aspects of ND in the context of a farce simply made him look a fool. It was unconvincing and belittling.

However, it has inspired this discussion which has brought us the posts from KPnuts and OWIAS which are enormously helpful. Whatever happens with the Brad storyline, they have increased our awareness and understanding, Thanks again to you both!

    1. And please add my thanks to those of Maryellen.

    2. I would also like to add my vote of thanks to KP and OwiaS for their combined illuminating posts.

I may have mentioned before, but perhaps not in any detail, that my much loved son in law was last year, finally in front of a GP who agreed that he did indeed present as a person with ADHD.
He was 59 at the time, now 60, and it was also agreed that he was unlikely to be able to see a consultant anytime in the near future.
He and my daughter have been married for over twenty five years now and throughout those years all of us within the family, me, other daughter and her husband, have witnessed and discussed his behaviour, and as the understanding of ND has increased so has our understanding of him increased. My daughter, his wife, a forensic researcher, studied his school reports going right back to his first years at Dulwich College when she feels his first teacher truly understood him, and was able to guide him and manage his difficulties. But then he was sent off to another less enlightened public school and was never understood again.
In more recent years his problems have been exacerbated by turning to alcohol to ‘ self medicate ‘.
My daughter continues to live in a deeply unhappy situation.

In another example I have in the past been mentoring a younger woman since she was in her early twenties, forever supporting her in her many attempts at relationships, none of which have ever lasted very long.
She too is now close to sixty.
Since I left London, nearly ten years ago now, she leans on me less and less.
It was always clear to me as well as other friends that she suffered from Asperger’s. She had been farmed out by her mother to her grandparents who were by all accounts rural peasants. Nothing was ever picked up and she has floundered through life ‘ failing ‘ ( ?) in both work situations and relationships and never able to understand ‘ why ‘.

Like Archphile I agree that life was so much simpler when we lived daily with Dan and Doris.
But the world, it’s people and us have all moved on massively in understanding the neurological differences evident amongst us, and if that is to be reflected in Ambridge, I for one am happy to be on board.

  42. I woke early this morning and tuned in to Radio4 to pass the time. An edition of Farming Today was on, a programme I quite often listen to.
What was today’s subject? Neurodiversity in Farming!
I could hardly believe they were discussing the subject we have just been talking about here.
Research shows that in the general population 15% of the population has now been diagnosed as ND; in the farming community it is thought to be double that at 30%.
They interviewed a young woman farmer with ADHD. She struggles a bit with all the paperwork involved in running a farm but otherwise seemed a very confident farmer.
I was a little surprised to hear that the term ND does not just cover Autism and ADHD but includes dyslexia, dyspraxia, Tourette’s Syndrome and other conditions.

It is an interesting listen and obviously continues the BBC’s great interest in the subject recently.
You could hear it on Sounds, On your Farm, 6.35am today.

Two of my cousin's friends who had been lifelong listeners stopped listening during the Helen/Rob storyline and never started again.
Maybe a happy pregnancy Miriam might be an accidental one for Fallon and Harrison, with Fallon realising from how good Harrison was with Henry that he would be good father material and not likely to abandon the family as her own father did.

  47. Is anyone aware of.up to date listening figures for TA or where to find them if they exist? The 5 million figure gets tossed. around but I wonder if that’s still correct.

    ReplyDelete
  48. It saddens me to know that of all the contributors to this blog when I first joined it, a number now do not listen.
As a listener since the first year of The Archers - though not the first few months - the programme has gone through many dips and highs, and as a result of this perhaps for me, I do not have high expectations of always enjoying whatever is going on in Ambridge. Many characters have appeared and stayed for a few years then moved on. Some have stayed, grown old and died.
A few being Aunt Laura, Mrs Antrobus and her dogs, Jack Woolly, Mark Hebdon, Sid at The Bull. Perhaps the Snells will join their ranks in due course.
Like AP, I accept that life was simpler when the main characters were Dan and Doris Archer, and the events in Ambridge centred around the Archer family.
Those days are gone and it is the wider Ambridge community who play a greater role now.
So TA is a very different programme now to what it was in the early fifties.
Also, I am utterly bemused by the habit of some, of not listening to certain episodes, perhaps because it will upset or bore them. This seems very strange to me.
As I’ve said on many occasions I will listen, good or bad.
I hope that my life long commitment and loyalty to the programme will last till my demise.

I shall remain a steadfast listener until my last days on earth, come what may. There are some aspects and characters I really don’t like, but then that’s the same in real life isn’t it?
Just as we have lost family and friends over the years, so it is in Ambridge.
Just as new families have moved into our village, so they have in Ambridge.
I try to put up with stories I don’t engage with and look forward to hearing from the characters I do enjoy.
I miss hearing much from Brookfield, once the epicentre of Archers life but it is good that the focus has broadened to include other families, businesses and so on.

    2. I am with you both - Mrs P. and AP.
I am an avid Ambridge listener and still love it. As many realise I also always enjoy the omnibus, as often the S/L's make a lot more sense plus why, in that it can give hints as to forthcoming situations or events.
At least TA moves with the times, addresses modern issues and in a way which is there in the world we live in today.
At least it does not get over complicated nor unrealistic, as in so much TV viewing these days.
It doesn't worry me if there are occasional episodes which are more light-hearted.
I so admire the cast of TA actors, who always portray their characters so well.

Re listening figs of course these days they consist of live nightly figs plus catch up and podcast without having these modern day facilities the number may well be less than the 5 million quoted. For instance as a night owl I have just listened to Wednesday pm broadcast on Sounds as I always do. A few years back I listened live usually while washing up our meal dishes. Without this modern facility I may well have dropped by the wayside because I now have different priorities. Fascinating how many of us have remained hooked for decades no matter what happens and now we are our “own family”. As such we can listen to and at times criticise TA as much as we like but just let an outsider do so and we will defend it to the end of time 🤭

Anyway, what I was going to say is, are we just assuming the unscrewing of a bottle was actually an alcohol bottle or could it have been something innocent, like lemonade or mineral water?
Because Alice has been going through such a lot with Harry, and his mother, I should have thought it would strengthen her resolve, not weaken it. No doubt we’ll find out tonight.

    1. Yes, it's been a popular suggestion on other blogs, but I think TA is taking this storyline too seriously to indulge in a leg pull like that. The continuity announcement beforehand about Alice seeking comfort also suggests it was alcohol.

The theory is that Alice's fraught encounter with Harry's mother brought back memories of her own destructive relationship with her parents and this, on top of her self-destructive relationship with Harry, which she realises but cannot make herself quit, has put an end to the 2+ years of sobriety she claims.

      Delete
    2. PS. It was definitely booze! The TA website's 'official' synopsis says so.

      Delete
    3. I haven’t read any synopses - I try to avoid them - and listening on Sounds you don’t get to hear the continuity announcer either at the beginning or end of an episode. So I was in the dark, but it sounds like the intention is to continue the drama and angst - oh dear!

    4. The BBC’s synopsis for each episode is published after the second live broadcast at 2pm the following afternoon. I sometimes use them for a quick catchup if I haven’t heard the live broadcasts, or (like now) to doublecheck a detail. Listeners were clearly meant to register Alice resorting to alcohol, the suggestion that it could have been non-alcoholic was entirely down to a few bloggers. Having Alice mutter Where did I put the brandy? would have clinched it but ruined the dramatic tension!

I agree with you, Archerphile - i got the message that alcoholism is for life last time, and don’t look forward it being repeated even if the ingredients are different (eg. Martha), especially as I still have a roomy feeling about it.

    1. This is how the synopsis puts it: "Once alone, Alice goes to a cupboard and takes out a bottle of booze. She pours herself a glass, takes a deep breath, and drinks." That's what we heard, immediately followed by Barwick Green. We didn't hear her spit the drink out or sick it up, so following the Keri Davis rule that 'if you didn't hear it, it didn't happen,' she didn't do that. So "drinks" in the synopsis has to mean "imbibes".

    I find their scenes embarrassing.

And as for George and his talking horse, that is just pure nonsense and not even amusing - just irritating and I can’t believe Lynda went along with it. She is a normally a very sensible woman

    1. Agree 100% Jim certainly surprised me not that I dare to judge under the heading of “Let he without sin cast the first stone” I have been in Alastair’s situation and I hope he gets the legal chance of happiness that I am enjoying!

    2. IE the process of leaving a distressing situation knowing that the right person is in your peripheral vision even so but best to take things very slowly Alastair…..

    1. I’m finding it pretty excruciating !

But as Lady R says…… sometimes slowly is necessary.

    2. I'm sure Denise was behind me on the bus this morning. It certainly sounded like her. Must have hotfooted it to get back to Ambridge in time for afternoon surgery.

  65. As for Alice…..lie after lie….. and I had high hopes for her.
    Sadly I now have doubts.

    1. She certainly had her blurb off pat. Her sponsor would have been proud of her - had she actually been contacted! (I would love to be proved wrong)

Are we not told that - if we did not hear it, ( or hear of it ) it did not happen - I certainly did not hear a phone conversation with Alice’s sponsor.
Sad, as so many listeners must have been rooting for Alice.
And sad too for the many listeners who may have a loved one in a similar situation.

    3. Indeed Mrs P, Alice knew well enough what her sponsor would have said to her which is why she sounded so convincing and in her head she may have convinced herself she did contact her! AA are no doubt still very involved with guiding the SW through the many possible pitfalls that recovering alcoholics have to deal with.

  66. I wonder who is going to burst her bubble? Who will find the bottles, or her drunk and incapable, or realise she is no longer telling the truth. And who will tell Chris and what will happen to little Martha? So many distressing strands of her story to unravel and deal with.
I suspect next week is not going to be an easy listen.

When will he tell Kate, and she then tell Lilian ?

  67. I heard an unannounced monologue from Alice last night.
Has anyone else heard this ?

    1. Should add that it was not on T A but later in the gap between programmes

    2. Yes it’s intriguing me too OwiaS, and did so as I realised that I was hearing Alice’s voice. And I’ve racked my brain as to when it was on.
But I think it must have been after TA but not much beyond Front Row.
It wasn’t comfortable listening, but earlier in the week others had talked of a disturbing synopsis which led me to look for it. But when found I couldn’t fathom what was so disturbing.
However what I heard was. Very disturbing !

Please …. Did anyone else hear this, and will it be repeated.

  68. Tiger, Tiger standing bright
In the headlamps of the night
    What infernal motorhead
Could knock you senseless, nearly dead?

My poem has just been moderated off the Beeb's blog. Apparently, someone has just realised it has been quietly breaking the House Rules for the last 6 years.
"We reserve the right to fail comments which...
Are considered to be off-topic for the discussion or are derailing the discussion onto a different topic."
This was on the blog where 'Will explains what happened the night of the Hunt Ball.' Struggling to work out how I was off topic. I've sent in an appeal.
Has anyone else found themeselves moderated out of the blue?

    1. Answer NO !
I remember your poem and it seems weird to be moderated and deleted so long after the ‘offence’.

    3. I missed that poem at the time I think, but absolutely brilliant.

Tonight’s episode was uncomfortable, I heard the trailer with Alice earlier, I fear things are going to get worse.

I heard it this morning, a trailer for next week. Oh dear.

  71. I was just struggling to wake up to the radio alarm this morning, aware there was a trailer for some drama or other going on. I think I hear a clink of bottles, then realised it was Alice’s voice speaking. I just became fully conscious as the announcer said something about next week’s Archers.
Must have been same one that you heard Mrs P.
    Oh dear, indeed
