MistralMay 4, 2024 at 7:21 AM Mrs. P 3/5 1.57 I heard it this morning, a trailer for next week. Oh dear.

ArcherphileMay 4, 2024 at 7:30 AM I was just struggling to wake up to the radio alarm this morning, aware there was a trailer for some drama or other going on. I think I hear a clink of bottles, then realised it was Alice’s voice speaking. I just became fully conscious as the announcer said something about next week’s Archers. Must have been same one that you heard Mrs P. Oh dear, indeed
KP you often use photos of your own as a header to the blog ie birds in garden, new kitchen etc Is this one of yours too 🤭 if so Alice will be on her way very soon!
Whilst looking for the trailer of Alice being talked about on here - which I have not found I came across via google a visual podcast called All about the Archers. Many of the characters are guests and talk about their part in the show. I am finding them interesting but not if you wish to remain innocent regarding their looks! I believe it can be just listened to as well. So far I have watched:- Lillian, Alice, Jakob, Ben & Chelsea (on together) Chelsea actor does not sound like Chelsea not nasal at all 🙏🏼 can’t recall them all right now but do have Pip to watch hummm. The episodes are also discussed. Lillian - actress pointed out that Miranda is Justin’s (Simon Williams) real life wife and that they find it hilarious to play their parts in TA at each others throats!
Thanks Lady R, I've just listened to 'Vince', very interesting.
I've grown more tolerant about characters not looking right - clearly they employ actors to do the interviews on their behalf in an effort to preserve their anonymity. Sadly, they do not realise that large swathes of the village are bugged and the nation gets to listen in on their most private conversations. (Except for the Button household - Mr Button works for MI5 and not only is he confident that his home is listening device free (he won't even allow Alexa or Siri in), he is fully conversant with the whereabouts of every hidden mike in Ambridge. Don't tell George - or he'd set up a consultancy business, advising residents where they can converse freely, for a modest fee, of course...)
👍 Daisy Badger (Pip) has the same voice but such a lovely person. Really enjoys playing Pip but appears to have the same opinion of her as some of us do. They all enjoy the Green room and Daisy has always found Paddy Green hilarious but of course she is rarely there now. Only a month now and June Spencer will be 105, incredible!
Has Alice gone to be with Jenny if so it may well be the end of Brian too. I thought Alice was run over after getting out of the car possibly by two cars one from each direction and that George seemed ok 🤔Joy of course will be distraught as she allowed Alice to buy the wine.
I expected a car crash, but thought Alice would be driving herself. ( well, I suppose she had been, before consuming the large bottle of vodka) But bearing in mind the little I was conscious of hearing of ‘ the trailer ‘ she must surely survive. On second thoughts …….. that could just have been a trailer and not part of an episode that we might hear in the days to come.
The car has obviously gone into the Am. Perhaps we are to lose George too, or instead of ?
Well, that was a cheery little episode ☹️. I thought it was just Alice in the water but, listening again, it could be the car as well. Either way, George wasn't insured to drive the car, the repercussions of that will add to the heartbreak. And just after he was actually trying to do something to help someone else out too. (Even if he did revert to form and try and wangle future perks out of the good turn.)
I waited for this episode with some excitement and trepidation. But when the big event happened at the end of the broadcast, I couldn’t make out exactly what was happening. Was there one car or two? If two, did they both go in the river? Who was in the second car, if there was one? Is Alice still alive or George, come to that. Hopefully all will be made clear tomorrow
I thought Alice had got out of the moving car and then fell into the river, also that George would be so frightened that he would run away from the scene if no-one saw him driving, although he had phoned home. Maybe that phone call will alert his family and save the day.
Hmmm! The impact of the SL was not as shocking as it would have been had a tragic event not been so publicised. Remember Mark and John I can still recall the total shock of both events.
I too wondered about the seat belt. I think it possible that she opened the door while the seat belt was still attached. As to the number of cars ? Not sure. There was certainly a car horn blaring, but that seemed to me to be a warning from another car to the apparent danger, perhaps of a passenger trying to exit a moving car. The water element - sound - came in seconds later, so I wondered if the car was rolling down the bank ?
I have no doubt that those of us listening were much engaged.
Unusually, last night's post-broadcast synopsis isn't showing this afternoon, whether deliberately (to keep us in suspense) or accidentally (the staff member whose job it is has taken today's Bank Holiday off!) who knows?
If Alice, or any of those involved ends up a wheelchair, it will make up for killing Nigel off, when he could have been the disabled character with all the storylines it could have produced. Perhaps the SWs are being a bit braver this time.
I suppose he managed to push her into the driver's seat. But he did phone Will and tell him of his plans. Will covered up for Nick, will he do the same again or drop George in it?
Did George push Alice into the drivers seat - I didn’t realise that. But there was so much shouting and noise going on, I didn’t realise half of what was happening. Once again I’ll have to listen again to try and make head or fail of it.
AP - it wasn’t until the second hearing that I realised that George was attempting to save his own bacon - after being the hero for saving Fallon ! - - by moving Alice back into the driving seat. He may have fooled Alistair, underlining his duplicity by remarking that she had drunk the contents of the Vodka bottle, but he hasn’t fooled the audience. When Will reveals the telephone call that George made before driving Alice back to Ambridge, I will be very interested in how the SW frame George’s further duplicitous explanations. Perhaps Will will reveal the telephone call to Emma, and perhaps that may lead to the mist that up to now has clouded Emma’s vision, to finally fall away. I do hope so !
Will surely knows if George has passed his driving test, so why would George phone him to say he was going to drive Alice home if he hasn’t? Nor did he sound or act as if he was over the legal limit, which would be difficult to prove now if he was. So why the apparent need to put Alice in the driving seat (if.he has indeed done that - we don’t yet know)? Joy & Co probably saw Alice struggling to exit from the passenger seat in their headlights and can back up the account of what actually happened.
I may have missed some clues here through not paying sufficient attention! Like the Rob and Helen story, it was better first time round. Will this also end with a death?
Thanks, CC, I’d forgotten about insurance! But Will would know that, so why tell him in advance, when Will’s self-confessed unfamiliarity with his new phone meant he might not pick up the message anyway? The plot is full of holes - or my brain is. I don’t care much about the Aldridges (except Kate and Jakob) but I don’t want the junior Grundys and Carters (including Martha) hurt.
Well somewhat of a confusing episode I thought all noise and muddled conversations and no real news of Alice until an sentence or two at the end, although my suspicion of life in a wheelchair - or at least for a very long time is even stronger now. Leg (s) amputation maybe? George trying hard as usual to make sure of covering his part in the whole event. Now his dad or was it grandad will have to lie too as he was phoned and told that George was going to drive a drunk Alice home. Then there all be “oh where were you and Denise going so late at night Alastair”
I can’t understand why Fallon was in Mick’s car with Joy. Where was Harrison.? It’s no good, I’ll have to listen again, my brain was too slow to take everything in.
Joy was going to a concert and I guess Fallon used her spare ticket in the end and Mick had been to pick them up but it appears we were supposed to pick all this up immediately when I for one was expecting the episode to start with Alice or possibly Harrison knocking at Brian’s door. I was totally disoriented 🙃
I suspect the need to disorientate the audience was deliberate by drawing us into the drama. I was fully engaged with palms pushing into my eye sockets throughout.
I did pick up fairly quickly that the car was carrying Mick as driver returning Joy from the concert. Once Mick ran off to rescue another passenger, soon revealed as Fallon, it became obvious that Joy had finally found another Ambridge resident for the spare ticket. Didn’t George have a passion for Fallon when a young teenager ? If so, I can understand why he was anxious to rescue his ‘ lovely maiden ‘.
However, to return to the disorientation, serious accidents involving several people do lead to confusing, fast moving and disorientating situations and I think this scenario was written and played out very well.
Whereas the Helen and Rob actual drama came at the end of many weeks of slow torture - ours and Helen’s - this one was sprung upon us quickly. We probably all expected Alice to be the victim in this scenario, but heh ho it was six other villagers who were in the frame instead. While Alice lay, comatose, possibly covered in her own vomit, in the passenger seat of her car, left at the side of the road by George. ( Now that might be a hindrance to the ambulance when it arrived ! )
Now we will have the excruciating aftermath which judging from the synopsis will contain further surprises, perhaps as Lady R predicts, the inclusion of a wheelchair. Although if the wheelchair is for the use of an Aldrich family member there will have to be an upgrading of wheelchairs. Basic will not be acceptable !
I think the concert arrangements had been left deliberately vague to increase the drama. First we were expecting Alice to be in the submerged car but, no, it was Joy. Just when we knew she was alive, we were hit with the news that Fallon was in the car too. And only when they're all safely on dry land did attention switch back to Alice. Well, to George actually, with just enough information to assure us that Alice was still alive and apparently in one piece.
Just to say the BBC's post-broadcast synopsis for Sunday and Monday's episodes have now been uploaded to the TA website. They are the nearest thing to gospel that we have , and will confirm or correct listener's understanding of events at the bridge. George emerges as instrumental in saving Mick, Joy and Fallon from the river, before hearing sirens and dashing back to the car where Alice is slumped, and "shifting Alice into the driver's seat.... He apologises to her, but what else can he do?"
So no clue yet to his actual reasoning and how he will now play it. As Mrs P says, a complex character - and all the more interesting for it!
Maryellen - Please can you direct me to these synopsis that you speak of. I can of course access the TA website, and have searched diligently without success. I’ve often wondered where you get the information that you often supply but fail to find it myself. I’ve been searching since reading your recent post and getting very frustrated. I have an Iplayer and know from experience that some things appear differently on my screen to what others may see on their phone or whatever device used. Please help me ME !
Mrs P - follow Sarnia's advice and you'll land on the home page of the TA website. From the row of section headings, click on Episodes.
That takes you to a chronological list of episodes identified by their dates and pre-broadcast headings (spoilers). Click on the date you want.
That takes you to the page for that episode where the date and heading are repeated want. Click on 'See more' after the heading.
That brings up the synopsis. If there is no 'See more' the synopsis hasn't yet been loaded. NB. On Fridays you get the week's cast list instead.
The Ambridge Reporter (can be googled) also carries daily synopses, written by a TA listener. They are longer, including the less relevant detail, with interjections by the writer (which I personally find obtrusive).
ME - Our posts have crossed Thank you for your explanation. I have always done what you have described on the website. This evening I have also looked at the Ambridge reporter.
Can’t remember if I’ve previously said or whether I’ve just thought it, but I’ve had a feeling for a while that Fallon will become pregnant. ( my silver lining in above post )
I was gripped and also think the chaos was reflected really well. I think Alice is the real victim here, and I'm glad that she has a previous pattern of behaviour for getting drunk in a quiet safe place. She is clearly troubled by her uncharacteristic behaviour and has glimmers of George interfering. I sincerely hope she remembers what happened, and just as importantly, people believe her. I think Kate has grown up since being involved with Jakob, but sadly we know she's barking up the wrong tree, but who can blame her? I'm not sure why George chose to cover his tracks unless he was not qualified to drive/ over the limit, or just terrified and out of his depth. I'm glad the others were o.k. curious about the mysterious Rochelle, who may/not exist except in Joy's mind. The next drama will be Fallon - I hope it's too soon after Chelsea for another abortion, but it is bound to cause ructions in their relationship as we know Harrison will be delighted and Fallon (possibly) less so. Its so nice to have an interesting story again, I can't remember when I enjoyed litening so much. There was an interview with the actress in the Telegraph on-line, she has a close family member who is an addict and has done a lot of research, apparently the vast majority of people who resume their habit do it when trying to help others.
Fallon's near-death experience might make her rethink her views on pregnancy. Not sure how ethical it was to reveal her pregnancy with her partner present though.
I have had some further thoughts. It’s probably reasonable for the police to assume that Alice was driving the car. However, do the police do a forensic search of a car after such an incident ? Does anyone know the answer to my question. If forensics were to examine the car they would pretty soon discover George’s DNA including fingerprints on the steering wheel, gear stick, if the car is a manual and the glove box. Just a thought !
If someone close to Alice has an inkling that her concerns for what she apparently did are relevant then they might push for an investigation. Chris perhaps ?
Alice deliberately put the keys in the glovebox, a strategy that has protected her before. She mentionned this to Brian and co. Hopefully, her persistent claim to have done so this time will lead to someone asking more questions about how 'she' came to be driving ...
WELL! That was a curved ball and no mistake. At least the Dr did not say you were pregnant but have lost your baby because then the choice of a decision would have been gone - so had Fallon then realised she would loved to have had a baby her (maybe) one chance would have been snatched form her / them. Will George come out unscathed if so Alicewill be banned from driving for some considerable time though. Overall an action packed couple of episodes.
Having to think out of the box now is George innocent and Mick going to be the instigator of the crash? When he went to help Kirsty recently I think he talked about age / health or am I imagining this? A lot going to be going on that’s for sure one way and another. On All about The Archers I watched the chat with “Joy” she is a lovely lady sounds like her character but looks younger than her voice…. Also listened to the interview with “Brian” I do like Charles Collingwood, good sense of humour too.
The BBC's synopsis has the answer: Alice "feels sick and starts trying to open the door. Distracted, George swerves and hits an oncoming car which crashes into the river." He certainly thought he'd be held responsible!
It has only just occurred to me that the episode synopsis for yesterday which said “there is life changing news from the hospital” - which I had expected to be somebody loosing a leg & needing a wheelchair - was actually Fallon finding out she is pregnant, which would be life changing news for her and Harrison. Bit slow on the uptake these days!
Because Miriam, Rochelle is doomed to be a silent character, just like old Bert’s wife Freda. ( until her final breath, did we hear her scream, or did I imagine that ? As that car rolled into the flood )
Phew! I thought that might happen. It seems to me that Fallon's unwanted pregnancy and Harrison's response were never intended as a storyline in its own right, but simply as a contrivance for piling the guilt and anguish on Alice with results we can only guess at. As for George, whatever comes out about his role in events, it shouldn't detract from his heroism in rescuing three people from the river. Emma has just cause to be proud of him there.
The car crash which put them in the river was an accident, sparked by Alice's drunken behaviour; their rescue was a matter of choice and responsibility, a sustained act calling for a cool head, physical strength adroitly applied and considerable personal courage. It should count in his favour if and when he faces prosecution.
My interest is in the psychologically complex character, George, being formed by the SW team. Clearly a person of interest in the future of Ambridge, and one whose activities will be endlessly discussed for years to come. Congratulations TA !
As for the deleted message. We knew he had sent it and hoped Will would act upon it, but now, if Will did not here it and does not know of it, there will never be an alert, and the police will not know of it.
However, there is still George’s phone and the police may want to examine that if they have any inkling of Gs behaviour on the night. We can but hope.
There would be mitigating factors in George’s case according to the directions I read and hopefully understood from the Sentencing Council. Which won’t please listeners on other blogs who are baying for George’s blood in the name of justice.
Even though George has deleted that message from Will’s phone it could still be found. If the police get involved it is possible to uncover deleted items from phones. But unfortunately , I can’t imagine why the police would want to examine Wills phone.
OMG I cannot take many more twists and turns! One has to keep reforming opinion on what is going to happen next. Fallon and Harrison on the way to splitting up maybe 🤔 George gets no better of course but deleted messages are never deleted - to the police for instance always retrievable for them. I am still working my way through the “All about the Archers” podcasts and interviews with the actors on their YouTube site. Holly who plays Alice is such a lovely person and even she still has hopes of a reconciliation with Chris and when she told Ruairi those home truths when she was drunk even though it was acting she thought it was awful having to say them and apologised to the other actor. The ones where the podcasters discuss episodes is also very interesting and after the last few days the chap said enough has happened to keep TA SW going into the next millennium! They were blown away with it all and congratulated the whole team ⭐️
This all sounds very interesting Lady R. Can to tell me where to find these podcasts etc. Thanks to ME I know now how to access the daily synopses but these podcasts sound equally informative.
Archerphile (and any other interested parties) google “All about The Archers” and the first drop down box states podcasts and the one below YouTube visual discussions and interviews. Happy listening/viewing. I just happened on it somehow but I’m glad that I did 🤗
Thanks Lady R. I ave found them. I had to download the Apple Podcast icon so that I can listen but it seems simple to use. Up to now I have only listened to podcasts on BBC Sounds, so now my choice is much wider.
I have not downloaded any app just gone straight on from google / YouTube although I did see an apple app on the screen to download be interested to hear how you get on🤗
There is also an "All About The Archers" Facebook page, which if join, have all this easily accessible. I appreciate that f/b isn't for everyone, but I am only pointing this out as another or alternative, option.
Yes this is mentioned each podcast Miriam audio or visual and when an interview is recorded the end questions come from that platform but good that you mentioned it here too 🤗
I was a bit surprised that the SWs though it time to mention, in a very non-controversial way, the conflict in the Middle East. The news that there is to be a fund raising event for all the poor children affected and is supported by various religious communities in the area was quite surprising after Ambridge seemingly exists in a bubble, unaffected by the outside world. For me, it was very interesting hearing that there is a synagogue in Felpersham, I think this is a first for The Archers. Well done SWs
Yes, I know that Fallon and Harrison felt differently about this pregnancy, and perhaps even more so about the miscarriage. But I think she was wrong to forbid him from talking to someone about it. However she felt, this was the child that he had thought he would never have. A brief elation and then the pain of loss, all on top of wanting to support a wife who hadn't wanted to be pregnant. It must be so tough for him. Yes, he was wrong to yell out the news to Alice like that, but perhaps if Fallon had accepted his need to offload on *someone* the outburst wouldn't have happened.
I’m sorry I didn’t make it clearer it was the production team I was criticising for the melodrama, not the character - though I guess a better actor might have pulled it off. There are ways of expressing the feelings Harrison was experiencing without yelling one’s head off or using crude language, which still convey their intensity.
Kate really has grown up - agree the truth of every word. I felt that although over dramatic Harrison was true to how I perceive his type. Always calm, measured and reasonable, but when the gasket blows, boy does it blow ! And agree with OwiaS - H needs to talk. His best friend won’t talk to him yet tells him that he can’t talk about the situation to anyone else. Effectively lighting the fuel that blows the gasket.
I’m afraid I have to disagree again! I haven’t found Kate any less mature than her siblings. Her unconventional views may seem eccentric but don’t signal immaturity, and building a successful business on top of them, which has involved a lot lot hard graft, doesn’t suggest immaturity either. Her personal relationships aren’t more unconventional than some others in Ambridge.I’m glad she’s now got Jakob.
The dreadful Brian has always been the root of the Aldridge family’s troubles. What Kate said to him last night should have been said years ago.
Yes, it should. His life seems to have been taking one wrong step after another. Marriage to Jenny followed by affairs with several women, conception of child outside his marriage, expecting Jenny to raise said child, bad business decisions, pollution of River Am, loss of much loved home, etc etc etc. And he has always insisted he is right and everyone else wrong. What a family to grow up in. I’m surprised Kate took so long to speak her mind and am a little surprised at how insightful and supportive Jakob is being. They make a good couple.
It never fails to amaze me that Robert at 80+ and Lynda coming up for 77 are still running their B+B at Ambridge Hall, seemingly without any outside help. I'd have thought they'd be retired to the South of France by now!
All I want to say is, how I have appreciated the acting skills of all the actors, who are portraying this S/L. To think that this is a radio drama only, when it is just heard and not seen, and as such no facial expressions or visual actions to help the drama. Personally I have admired the acting over this week
Listening to the omnibus today, knowing what was about to happen, I found myself wondering how it was recorded. I’ve seen film of the recording studio, the props available for various sound effects, the sink for washing up sounds, the staircase etc etc. The actors silently turning the pages of the script by the microphones. So I’d like to know how the did the river scenes. Actors backed by a recorded soundtrack of a river accident, or staff splashing around in buckets of water and banging bits of metal together? However they did it, it certainly sounded realistic and was a tour de force but the actors.
Agree. The special effects were so spectacular and skillfully done. After the Omnibus this morning, I still stand by my comment as to the wonderful acting by the actors..which was also done in a studio and into a microphone. This can't be easy to do with such intensity.
Has Alice spoken with her mentor as yet or is she just hood winking family and friends? The reason being that as yet she alone knows the reason for her relapse and does not want to reveal it knowing how wrong she was to do what she did for Harry even though with the best of intentions but it will have to come out to give her the best chance of going back into a recovering alcoholic situation 🤞🏼
She told Brian + Miranda after her performance in the Bull. It was mentioned in passing as it happened out of ear-shot. It was one of the 1st things heard briefly, in Sunday's omnibus, and obviously happened on the Saturday.
To be clear. In this evenings episode Tuesday 14 th May, Alice has told Lisa that she is not capable of recovery, does not want Lisa as her buddy and will not be returning to AAMeetings. She reiterated that conversation to Adam who had insisted she make the call to Lisa. I feel very sad !
Harrison’s wild accusations have turned the crash from one possible but unprovable cause of the foetus’ death into a certainty - and very likely the last straw for Alice. As OWiaS points out, his accusations might not have been so wild if she had given him the sympathetic ear he wanted, (Sympathy for his feelings that is - he was showing no regard for hers.)
So the moral guilt for Alice’s sad situation is convoluted, though primarily hers. A case of “the sins of the father......”
Sorry, I meant to say “if Fallon had given” etc. In his elation, Harrison seemed to have completely forgotten that Fallon most definitely didn’t want children, something that they had discussed and agreed more than once in our hearing.
In the old days Tuesdays episode would have ended with the big crashing Barwick Green but for some reason a long while ago it was said it will never be used again I don’t remember why! The only other dramatic end left is complete silence which is used on occasions - Phil found passed away in his chair by Jill on her return from an outing? I digress what do each of us deduce from Tuesday nights ending, a possible attempted suicide? or so much continuous drink is taken that in time liver disease is the result? The SW will have had to take a realistic approach and not jump to a happy ending directly. Lisa did not ask what had caused Alice to start drinking again had she done so and been told the truth her buddy would have understood her situation much more clearly. Harry will return from his recovery centre to be faced with what he has done to Alice and so the circle will continue.
Oh goodness. This is all so terribly depressing! I know Alice has an illness, that alcoholism is regarded as an illness……but to be honest, I am getting sick of hearing about it, and her, and her moaning on, and her awful father, and Harry and George too, come to that. And how the ripples of her drinking are reaching out to affect others in the village. I do realise it’s cleverly written and brilliantly acted but it’s not I want to listen to. Why couldn’t she have been allowed to continue maintaining sobriety and looking after Martha without more drama? Alice has been trouble and a pain since her teenage days, and I’ve had enough of her! I would prefer to concentrate in other stories for a while.
But I will continue to tune in, because I can’t imagine not having TA in my life. And that’s my problem! 🤯
I hope there is more to be revealed. I felt sad at the end of last night’s episode but not despairing. There is still the truth from George to come out, or the possibility of a police investigation. Harrison might remember that Fallon never wanted a baby in the first place and didn’t know she was pregnant anyway. In a calmer, less emotional space he might feel differently towards Alice or at least feel differently about the current situation. However I don’t discount the possibility of further dramas to emerge.
How great to have Ruairi back. His actor is playing the part of Shardlake in a big new Netflix TV series based on the Shardlake stories by CJ Samson and he has had great reviews. So I was surprised to hear him again tonight, thinking he would be too busy to return to TA. Perhaps he has the best solution for Alice at the moment, taking her off to London and away from all the gossiping and the controlling family
I was (a) surprised to hear Ruairi greeting Alice with such enthusiasm, given his coldness towards her after her drunken rant at him - I think he only remained civil to her for Jenny’s sake, and (b) relieved that he was going straight back to London so there would be no opportunity for a reunion with Paul who I’m finding less and less likeable.
I thought their relationship was beyond repair, and I doubt if Ruari is acting with Alice's best interests in mind. I agree about fuss-pot Paul, I find him really irritating. I think Denise and Alistair should just tell the truth, Paul is going to feel ridiculous when he realises all the lies he was told, and Jakob shouldn't be colluding against him either. How could Paul cntinue to work with such a bunch? Maybe it will lead to a Constructive Dismissal tribunal.
Umm I think you are right Miriam Paul is trying to goad Alastair to breaking point that is why he is taunting him with how close his dad and mum are after the accident.
Have I missed something? There's been a serious accident with potential fatalities and I can't recall any mention of an investigation into it. I would have thought that Alice would have been taken into custody and had her blood alcohol level tested and probably been charged with driving under the influence. All the others present would have had to give witness statements explaining why they were there and what they saw. That would have put paid to Alistair's stupid fabrications and George would have had to explain how he came to be at the scene. Alice is swanning off to London, no mention of her job. Is she taking sick leave, annual leave or quitting? TA really is a parallel universe.
No you have not missed anything CC. I too have been waiting to hear of the investigation and mentioned this in a post a day or so since. Alice was taken into custody for a few hours and then released but there has been no follow up, so far. ( that we have heard of ) There has not been either any conversation with Lilian regarding Alice leaving Ambridge for London, and abandoning the stables. I agree with you CC, no sign either of any questioning of the occupants of the cars involved. Perhaps without Sargent Burns at the helm the Borsetshire police force are waiting for his return before they can get there backsides into gear !
As far as the police are concerned, she was found in the drivers seat so was driving. Case closed. Perhaps though when the results of her alcohol level blood tests finally come back, it will show such high levels, that Alice would have been incapable of driving.
Yes I too noticed that little gem ! So - it’s been mentioned therefore an investigation is in hand. I hope to hear more ! The Archers - in real time ……
I'd forgotten how Alice provided practical help when Julianne threw Ruari out, which he mentioned last night and clearly led to his change of heart. Also mentioned was the fact that Lilian was happy with Alice taking time of work for a trip to London with Ruari. So it looks as if the scriptwriters have covered all our concerns! (I'm slightly surprised that there has been no mention of damage to Alice's car, which seems to have survived the impact completely unscathed - same as its occupant(s).
I was quite amused to hear that the Dead Ringers show included a scene about The Archers in last nights edition. Just goes to show that BBC programmes are not isolated and acknowledges the kerfuffle that the Alice story has caused. Quite good impersonations I thought, though not as good as their version of Liz Truss which makes me laugh every week. 😂
Tracy’s attack on Alice reminded me strongly of her even more vitriolic attack on Russ, based on an unwarranted assumption. It’s one of the reasons I prefer her sister Susan, who doesn’t have that vindictive streak. It also struck me that what Tracy said about Alice having a spoiled little rich kid’s sense of entitlement is exactly what some listeners have said about Harry. It seems they are the similar products of similar upbringings.
What you are describing re Harry and Alice Maryellen is surely what we heard when H and A first met. An attraction between two people with similar backgrounds accents and aspirations / expectations. That was what I heard and interpreted from what I heard. And I didn’t need to spell it out to myself, it seemed pretty obvious !
I didn’t understand, since they were so similar, why Harry attracted so much blame from listeners and Alice much less. I couldn’t see he did much wrong, or not on his own initiative. But as a character I don’t think he was well drawn or well acted, so perhaps not as congenial as he could have been.
I would very much like this convoluted storyline to end here. I’m not interested in George “getting his comeuppance”. Far from “basking in glory”, as it’s been put, his conscience smites him every time his indisputable heroism is mentioned.
As for the Alastair storyline, words fail me! If that’s supposed to be the light relief, it isn’t working for me. I’m mildly curious as to whether Mick is another ‘passing through’ character like Sykesy who disappeared without trace after Jasper C. did his act at Christmas - or whether TA is building up a succeeding generation of residents to replace those played by older actors. Could that be why we hear so much of Fallon?
(Sorry, long post, sleepless night, straying thoughts....)
No need to apologise Maryellen, and I agree with some of the thoughts that kept you awake. Especially about the ‘romance’ at the vets. I have no time for alas-DAIR and his on/off doings with Denise. It is being drawn out far too long and I find his way of discussing his feelings wIth several other people distasteful. I am also finding it strange that Jakob, who is normally a straight-laced kind of guy is aiding and abetting Alistair in his attempts to pull the wool over irritating Paul’s eyes.
Personally, I hope Alice stays in London with Ruairi for a long time, because I have had enough of her problems for a while. So not much to enjoy in The Archers for me for at the moment apart from the Cricket.
It sounds like Roy is off to pastures new in Bulgaria. I had so hoped this character would be recast. Johnny is still absent on the high seas, and now the prospect that Roy is leaving, will mean a gap in the younger male category. The only young ones left will be George, Brad, Freddie, Ben(?). Is this the future of Ambridge??
I agree Miriam! The Johnny SL does not ring true with me he was so into his farming and quite the country boy. Is it because todays young actors will never want to be tied to a radio serial in the way those in the past did also these days they need to be written out quickly it seems to cover other jobs or to take time out for education, travel etc. Not replacing Roy a lost opportunity 🤔
Harrison needs to talk to someone - he's clearly struggling and Fallon can't/won't acknowledge that. Today's cricket match will be a taste of things to come if he keeps trying to bottle up his emotions.
He certainly does OwiaS. Our mild mannered reasonable copper has become a very angry man. And nasty with it too !
I understand Roy not being re cast. He had such a distinctive voice. And going off to be with Lexi sits well with me.
I’m also OK with Alistair and Denise taking their time to bring their romance to fruition. Life is often complicated and situations have to be managed. Although I’m not keen on the rather silly business with the (I agree ) irritating Paul.
The cricket passes over my head. Any sport is utterly boring to me. However I can see Pats point to Harrison that he is being unfair to Tracy. At least one character - has to put her oar in at any opportunity Pat Archer - is true to form.
I don’t understand why Harrison won’t talk to Fallon at all now when he was so desperate for them to talk together before. She gave him the opportunity, but it seems to me he actively resents her and her attempts to keep some kind of conversation going between them in the face of his refusal to communicate. I suppose this is his reaction to her inability to share his grief to the same extent, but perhaps I’m being too simplistic.
The problem is, he is grieving the loss of the baby and she is not. Yes, he had recently assured her that it was more important for them to be together than for him to be a father. But then, unexpectedly, Fallon was pregnant! Eiven then it was clear that he and Fallon had vastly different responses to the news. It's hardly surprising these responses should polarise following the miscarriage. Harrison needs someone he can pour out his heart to and express how he really felt about the baby. Normally this could be Chris but, given his connections with Alice, that probably wouldn't work at present. Alan maybe? Or an outside counsellor? There again, both Lynda and Joy have shown they can be wise and empathetic listeners.
I must have missed something, or fallen asleep during an episode - but what’s all this about Roy going to Bulgaria? When and why? I don’t recall hearing anything about this at all.
We haven’t heard about it ARCHERPHILE. But Kirsty mentioned that he was on the phone to Lexi, ( or was it face timing ?) a lot of the time. This was the second time that this activity of Roy’s was mentioned. I think it was Miriam who suggested that he was off to Bulgaria, possibly making the - reasonable- assumption that he would go to join Lexi. Or perhaps the suggestion has been made on other TA forums, none of which I subscribe to.
Thank you Mrs P. A lot of theories get posted online but I hadn’t picked up on this one. I suppose it would save the casting director having to find a Roy sound-alike but it would leave a managers job free at Grey Gables……….Lily as a possible candidate????? (Just thinking ahead and breaking my self- imposed no speculatiing rule! 😄
Mrs P. My comment about Roy + Lexi was based on what has been broadcast in TA. This has been many comments by Kirstyvin passing, about Roy on video calls with Lexi, so much that she said on one occasion - she felt like a gooseberry. Kirsty also mentioned that Lexi was "propped up" in the kitchen, still chatting with Roy as he was making a Shepherds Pie. This is why I think that Roy is destined to go off to Bulgaria - as Lexi is unlikely to relocate her daughters to Ambridge. That is my explanation as to my post and to justify it.
Yes Miriam, your explanation is exactly as I read it. As I said in answer to AP, I thought it was you that had suggested it based on what you had heard Kirsty say. I heard it too, and thought that your assumption that Roy might go off to Bulgaria was due to what you had heard Kirsty say. To clarify… I did say that you had suggested it and that you had made the reasonable assumption from what you had heard. I didn’t think it myself, but when I read what you thought I could see the sense of it and was in agreement. I also felt that I had made it clear to AP that I had not heard, nor that you had heard it. But that it was a ( reasonable) assumption.
Today I got my map of Ambridge out. Has anyone else got this map ? Published by David and Charles in 1986 BBC copyright
I have been wondering where in Ambridge the crash from the bridge into the water was exactly, knowing that the Am flows through and around Ambridge. From the map I discovered that there are five bridges in and around Ambridge and a ford, but there had not seemed to be any indication since the accident where exactly it happened. Then this evening there it was in the episode, Heydon bridge. Heydon bridge straddles the Am between Brookfield farm and Glebelands with Heydon Berrow above and between these two points. The Ford, Traitors Ford crosses over the road that leads up to Hollowtree and in the opposite direction leads past Bridge farm to Felpersham.
I would be interested to know if anyone else does have a copy of this map.
I don't have a map of Ambridge apart from a small black-and-white one in my Archers book published in 1985. The 1986 one you mention is for sale from Amazon, and googling brings up more. (I don't know if they all agree!)
I have three Ambridge maps, all slightly different. The best is called the Ambridge Panorama and is made to look exactly as a proper Ordnance Survey map. It only shows 2 bridges; one between St Stephans Church and the village Shop, just to the west of the village centre. The other bridge is on the road south from the village, between Nightingale Farm and Brookfield. The ford is quite close to Ambridge Hall on a quiet lane from Brookfield Farm to April and Keeper’s Cottages. Neither bridge has a name
The Archers Addicts ‘Official map of Ambridge’ shows a third bridge over the road which leads to Ambridge Hall and the two cottages from the village. Heydon Berrow is shown as being a long way from the river. Strangely, Bridge Farm is nowhere near the river or any bridges! I can only conclude that the accident happened quite a long way out of the village and the range of my maps.
AP - I thought like you that the accident had happened way outside of the village, but from the remarks by Lily yesterday the bridge concerned was Heydon bridge, which I described in my post yesterday.
I’ve go at least one, possibly more maps of Ambridge, including I think the one you’re referring to, I’ll see if I can change the header on this thread or else open a new thread.
All these various maps are slightly different. I wonder which map the SWs use when they are planning stories. There must be a big one on the wall of the studio I should think. It would be very helpful if they could publish it on the BBC Archers website.
I’ve been thinking similar thoughts over the last day AP. Also wondering if each ‘new team’ invents their own mind map of Ambridge and works from that point. Also wondering who has sanctioned all these different maps over the decades, apparently without any consistency between each publication.
Thank you KP for the map, it’s the same as my Archers Addicts one with the Am running from top to bottom. My ‘Ordnance Survey’ type has the river running across the page so everything is a different way around. It would be a huge help ( to me, anyway) if there was a north pointer but none of the maps I have seen seem to have one.
Thank you KP for providing your copy. I am able to zoom in and enlarge it. It is not the same as mine and later today I will spend some time comparing the two, and report back later.
The half page, black and white map in my Archers book is not very informative as regards place names (The Bull is simply PH like an Ordnance Survey map), ut it has been given an authentic look with the scale in metres and a compass. Borchester is to the north and Felpersham to the east of the village, The Am runs from the top right-hand corner (ie. north-east), westwards past the village, then turns south to disappear off the page. (It might flow the other way of course. Thinks: why don't cartographers include arrows showing which way rivers flow?)
PS. The nearest main road (shown west of the village) is the fictional B3980. If you google it, one of the websites that comes up is the Wikipedia article on Borsetshire which points out that the road numbering there is a mess. For example, it says "the BBC map of the area" includes several roads starting with 1 which in real life would place it in East Anglia. However, as we often have to remind ourselves, TA is a parallel universe!
PPS. Aha! Just seen a reference to the Am flowing through the village to Borchester - so my original assumption that it’s overall direction of flow was north to south was wrong.
After seeing so many different theories about Rochelle and her non-appearance in Ambridge, I was tempted to come up with one of my own (apologies to any listeners who may have put the same theory forward and I missed it)..
This is that Joy has a type of split personality disorder, in which there are two Joys coexisting: the ‘real Joy who.is childless, and her alter ego, the Joy she has created and completely believes in, who is the mother of Rochelle and grandmother of Rochelle’s children. The alter ego is especially dominant at time of stress, hence Rochelle’s post-crash visit to Joy in hospital.
I know very little about multiple personality disorder (or dissociative identity disorder as it’s apparently called now) but I have come across accounts of people inventing an alter ego as a defence mechanism against over whelming stress, shame, or unhappiness. Perhaps many of do it to a lesser extent, certainly not to the same extent as Joy.
It’s a convincing enough theory Maryellen and you may be correct. After this evenings edition though, and Joy’s tight lipped annoyance I’m inclined to stay with my theory. That is that Joy does have a daughter and grandchildren but that there has been and continues to be a serious rift in the relationship between them. A rift that Joy cannot articulate to herself, let alone others. However, and I’m happy to be corrected, but did I not hear Kirsty or Mick say, sometime earlier this week, that Joy actually sent greetings cards and presents to her G children ? If so, this might give credence to MEs suggestion of a split personality. Whatever the truth of the matter, Joy is certainly hiding something very deep in her psyche. An interesting S L !
So also is ‘our baby ‘ ! ‘ We were pregnant’ Harrison has said on several occasions since discovering that Fallon had been pregnant but was no longer. Each time I heard him say this, the voice in my head has said ‘ No Harrison, Fallon was pregnant ‘ Tonight Fallon said it for herself. IMO, well done Fallon.
I feel now that this is another long range storyline and I applaud TA for tackling this subject. For too many decades men and women who have lost a child in embryo or before full term, have not had their grief listened to, but in recent times this has changed and continues to be written and talked about. I think TA has chosen to take this subject on a slightly different trajectory by, in this scenario, involving a couple with different hopes and aspirations for their future. For Fallon, a positive future without children but for Harrison an apparent acceptance of Fallons wishes, but with a deep seated, and perhaps unrecognised hope of change. The result of a change in the circumstances of actively choosing a course of preventing any pregnancy, has brought them to a very serious point of departure in their respective - previously- happy relationship. Whilst I understand and sympathise with Harrison’s feelings, my perspective is allied with Fallon.
I hold this perspective despite having been in the forefront of the campaign to allow fathers to be present at childbirth ( I’m alluding to the sixties here ) And I have applauded over the decades seeing fathers becoming more and more involved with the state of pregnancy, childbirth and the active hands on rearing of their children. Nevertheless I hold the very strong belief that it must and should be a woman’s choice to have a child or not.
Wish I could have shut you in a room with Mr S decades ago. After we were married he moved the goal posts and decided that he saw it as my duty as his wife, like it or not.
Your theory is the simplest, Mrs P, and so often it’s the simplest and most obvious solution that turns out to be the right one. I remember Joy launching into.a story about teenage Rochelle being a gifted cheerleader who could have won prizes if she hadn’t inexplicably given it all up. It sounded an odd thing to invent!, so I was inclined to think it was true. I can’t recall if Joy has ever said anything about her ex, Rochelle’’s father. Now I’m beginning to wonder if he exists!
I wonder if Rochelle had died as a young child and Joy had visualised a life. I thought her reaction was odd though, angry with Mick one second and dripping sweetness with ?? the next second.
Joy was very annoyed that Mick had applied for, and had been successful in getting a local job. I think she didn’t really want him to be working nearer, perhaps even to suggest they move in together permanently. Which made me wonder if Joy is, in fact, still married and hiding away from a still existing husband? Perhaps Rochelle, if she exists, sided with her father after the break up/ escape and that is why there is no contact. Who knows, it’s just another theory!
I’ve been mildly intrigued by Joy since she arrived in Ambridge. Firstly simply because she simply arrived as a newcomer. Was planted by the SWs ! Why ? What for ? Obviously there was a hidden back story and Joy herself has upheld the mystery. I don’t dislike her but, there is ‘ a but ‘ ! Kind, generous, bubbly Joy, always willing to join in, be fun, and helpful and friendly to all. And yet there is something in this general and positive description which somehow doesn’t quite ring true. Her tight lipped response to Mick followed immediately by her charming smile, and I’m sure it was a smile, to Elizabeth’s intervention spoke volumes to me. Joy is certainly hiding her past. And that past is known only to the TA team. For the time being. It may not have even been formulated yet. Interesting times ahead !
I thought that was all very clunky. A new character, driver, hard up, working all hours he can get, and small items of deliveries gone walkerbout ! Somewhat obvious I’d say. Thought Freddie handled the conversation regarding his ancestral home rather adroitly though.
It’s possible that Jason was stringing Freddie along by pretending ignorance of his background. Unless Freddie is working incognito at Casey Meats, it’s unlikely his fellow employees haven’t sussed him out. They. probably knows about their boss’s liaison with Freddie’s mother too, and have drawn their own conclusions.
I was pleased that TA is having a story-line about D Day. Mr CC's father was a serving soldier in the landings. I wish that we had been able to talk to him about it but he very rarely would and we felt it important to respect those wishes.
I like the D-Day storyline too - much more interesting and worthwhile than the infillers we usually get nowadays. I was expecting Lynda to enlist one of the farming community to recreate the agricultural scene during WW2, did I miss it? Maybe she will talk about the Dig for Victory campaign herself.
She has asked Chelsea to demonstrate the famous Victory Roll hairstyle popular back then. My Mum wore that hairstyle for several years after the war so I hope Radio Times or somewhere publish a photo. It would be good to have a few LandGirls featured too, though I can only think of Pip and Stella being suitable for the role.
I was very worried by Chelsea’s description of the victory roll. What she described was tight curls around the head. Not my understanding of a victory roll. Discuss :
I stand corrected, having just been watching some demonstrations. My previous understanding was that the VR was at the back of the head, the hair being rolled up with a ribbon to create a roll of hair at the nape of the neck. That’s how I remember my mum when I was very small. Sorry to doubt you Chelsea.
There are photos of my mum with the same roll at the nape of the neck, Mrs P, though no ribbon, just hairpins. I think there were different versions of the Victory Roll, and our mums had the always busy working woman’s unelaborate version. I know mine was relieved when she had her hair cut short at the end of the 40s.
Cricket in Ambridge has become rather noisy these days. No longer the lounging in a deckchair while husband and boyfriend stroll out to the crease, face a few balls and return, silently, politely, to the pavilion for tea. Now we have the likes of Chelsea & friends shrieking if they catch a ball or hit one over the boundary. I’m all for the young (and girls) being encouraged to take up the game but they need to be taught some decorum, how to be magnanimous and polite and not act like over-excited fans at a football match. And finally, sledging is not suitable or to be encouraged in village level cricket 🏏
Goodness, TA has become very dull, nobody has anything to say about it!
I’m wondering if Lilian is going to let Shula know about the Strangles outbreak at the stables. Shula was quite annoyed when Lilian didn’t consult her about the alterations she and Justin were planning. Could this be the cue for another visit from Newcastle?
I thought Oliver sounded very stern when Lillian was twittering on about bio-security. I wonder if he is going to hold the stables to account for negligence.
Lady RJune 7, 2024 at 12:56 AM An excellent D Day Tribute episode ⭐️ I absolutely understood Fallons words regarding feelings of potential loss and in circumstances of high emotional moments they tend to sneak up!
Can somebody remind me of the past connection between Chelsea and Ben that was alluded to last night. I’ve clearly forgotten whatever it was as I was mystified by that reference in last nights episode. Like others I felt the day’s importance was marked very well indeed.
It was after Ben and Beth split up, something to do with Vince + Brookfield?. Ben went to an event at LL and got drunk. Quite a while later Chelsea found out she was pregnant. Ben it eventually turned out was the father, and Chelsea went through a late termination. That's how I remember it..

I heard it this morning, a trailer for next week. Oh dear.
REPLYDELETE
ArcherphileMay 4, 2024 at 7:30 AM
I was just struggling to wake up to the radio alarm this morning, aware there was a trailer for some drama or other going on. I think I hear a clink of bottles, then realised it was Alice’s voice speaking. I just became fully conscious as the announcer said something about next week’s Archers.
Must have been same one that you heard Mrs P.
Oh dear, indeed
KP you often use photos of your own as a header to the blog ie birds in garden, new kitchen etc
ReplyDeleteIs this one of yours too 🤭 if so Alice will be on her way very soon!
🥴
DeleteVery clever title for the new blog KP.
ReplyDeleteI just noticed that too, Archerphile!
ReplyDeleteWell spotted! You're both more observant than I am.
DeleteWhilst looking for the trailer of Alice being talked about on here - which I have not found I came across via google a visual podcast called All about the Archers. Many of the characters are guests and talk about their part in the show. I am finding them interesting but not if you wish to remain innocent regarding their looks! I believe it can be just listened to as well. So far I have watched:-
ReplyDeleteLillian, Alice, Jakob, Ben & Chelsea (on together) Chelsea actor does not sound like Chelsea not nasal at all 🙏🏼 can’t recall them all right now but do have Pip to watch hummm. The episodes are also discussed. Lillian - actress pointed out that Miranda is Justin’s (Simon Williams) real life wife and that they find it hilarious to play their parts in TA at each others throats!
Thanks Lady R, I've just listened to 'Vince', very interesting.
DeleteI've grown more tolerant about characters not looking right - clearly they employ actors to do the interviews on their behalf in an effort to preserve their anonymity.
DeleteHas Alice gone to be with Jenny if so it may well be the end of Brian too. I thought Alice was run over after getting out of the car possibly by two cars one from each direction and that George seemed ok 🤔Joy of course will be distraught as she allowed Alice to buy the wine.
I expected a car crash, but thought Alice would be driving herself.
ReplyDelete( well, I suppose she had been, before consuming the large bottle of vodka)
But bearing in mind the little I was conscious of hearing of ‘ the trailer ‘ she must surely survive.
On second thoughts …….. that could just have been a trailer and not part of an episode that we might hear in the days to come.
The car has obviously gone into the Am.
Perhaps we are to lose George too, or instead of ?
Well, that was a cheery little episode ☹️.
DeleteI thought it was just Alice in the water but, listening again, it could be the car as well.
Either way, George wasn't insured to drive the car, the repercussions of that will add to the heartbreak. And just after he was actually trying to do something to help someone else out too. (Even if he did revert to form and try and wangle future perks out of the good turn.)
I think it was the car, with possibly both occupants that went into the Am.
DeleteI waited for this episode with some excitement and trepidation. But when the big event happened at the end of the broadcast, I couldn’t make out exactly what was happening. Was there one car or two? If two, did they both go in the river? Who was in the second car, if there was one?
ReplyDeleteIs Alice still alive or George, come to that.
Hopefully all will be made clear tomorrow
I thought Alice had got out of the moving car and then fell into the river, also that George would be so frightened that he would run away from the scene if no-one saw him driving, although he had phoned home. Maybe that phone call will alert his family and save the day.
ReplyDeleteWas Alice sober enough to undo her seatbelt, which George had done up for her, to get out of the car?
DeleteHmmm!
DeleteThe impact of the SL was not as shocking as it would have been had a tragic event not been so publicised. Remember Mark and John I can still recall the total shock of both events.
I too wondered about the seat belt.
DeleteI think it possible that she opened the door while the seat belt was still attached.
The BBC's synopsis will be available on the TA website after this afternoon's repeat.
ReplyDeleteHaving read the synopsis for the days following I feel that the consequences will be bringing further shocks, whether publicised or not.
ReplyDeleteI’m now thinking it was George who went into the river in the car, and that Alice’s monologue might well be coming during the next week.
Possible that Alice survives but is to be wheelchair bound therefore a disabled resident in the village and enter Chris to support…..
ReplyDeleteUnusually, last night's post-broadcast synopsis isn't showing this afternoon, whether deliberately (to keep us in suspense) or accidentally (the staff member whose job it is has taken today's Bank Holiday off!) who knows?
ReplyDeleteIf Alice, or any of those involved ends up a wheelchair, it will make up for killing Nigel off, when he could have been the disabled character with all the storylines it could have produced.
ReplyDeletePerhaps the SWs are being a bit braver this time.
I wonder if ‘ Nigel’ the actor is still listening ?
DeleteDispicable. Even worse than runnng away, George will now be hailed as a hero. I can't even imagine Emma's pride....
ReplyDeleteI suppose he managed to push her into the driver's seat.
DeleteBut he did phone Will and tell him of his plans. Will covered up for Nick, will he do the same again or drop George in it?
Not fun ☹️
OWiaS, that is a very good point. I hope Will has some integrity.
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting to hear how George explains his presence at the scene
ReplyDeleteGeorge........he giveth and he taketh away. Can't help himself!
ReplyDeleteGeorge is being developed into a multi faceted character.
ReplyDeleteThe good….the bad and plenty of grey in between.
Oh Emma, I feel for you.
Did George push Alice into the drivers seat - I didn’t realise that. But there was so much shouting and noise going on, I didn’t realise half of what was happening. Once again I’ll have to listen again to try and make head or fail of it.
ReplyDeleteAP - it wasn’t until the second hearing that I realised that George was attempting to save his own bacon - after being the hero for saving Fallon ! - - by moving Alice back into the driving seat. He may have fooled Alistair, underlining his duplicity by remarking that she had drunk the contents of the Vodka bottle, but he hasn’t fooled the audience.
DeleteWhen Will reveals the telephone call that George made before driving Alice back to Ambridge, I will be very interested in how the SW frame George’s further duplicitous explanations.
ReplyDeleteI may have missed some clues here through not paying sufficient attention! Like the Rob and Helen story, it was better first time round. Will this also end with a death?
It's unlikely that George would be insured to drive Alice's car, so would have been breaking the law.
DeleteThanks, CC, I’d forgotten about insurance!
DeleteWell somewhat of a confusing episode I thought all noise and muddled conversations and no real news of Alice until an sentence or two at the end, although my suspicion of life in a wheelchair - or at least for a very long time is even stronger now. Leg (s) amputation maybe?
ReplyDeleteGeorge trying hard as usual to make sure of covering his part in the whole event.
ReplyDeleteJoy was going to a concert and I guess Fallon used her spare ticket in the end and Mick had been to pick them up but it appears we were supposed to pick all this up immediately
Deletewhen I for one was expecting the episode to start with Alice or possibly Harrison knocking at Brian’s door. I was totally disoriented 🙃
I suspect the need to disorientate the audience was deliberate by drawing us into the drama.
DeleteI was fully engaged with palms pushing into my eye sockets throughout.
DeleteIncidentally, I have no memory of George learning to drive, or having taken a test.
DeleteHave I missed this or simply forgotten ?
MrsP, our posts crossed!
DeleteI didn't have my palms pushing into my eye sockets, but I did munch through an entire bag of Mini Eggs!
DeleteSo no clue yet to his actual reasoning and how he will now play it. As Mrs P says, a complex character - and all the more interesting for it!
Maryellen -
ReplyDeletePlease can you direct me to these synopsis that you speak of.
Mrs P, did you Google BBC Radio 4/Archers, because that's where it is. Then you can put a shortcut to desktop.
DeleteMrs P. Try a search for The Ambridge Reporter-synopses for May 2024.
DeleteThis might help you.
Mrs P - follow Sarnia's advice and you'll land on the home page of the TA website. From the row of section headings, click on Episodes.
DeleteThat takes you to a chronological list of episodes identified by their dates and pre-broadcast headings (spoilers).

DeleteOur posts have crossed
Thank you for your explanation.
I have always done what you have described on the website.
This evening I have also looked at the Ambridge reporter.
See my post below at 6.42. ( except it’s 7.42 )
There is always a silver lining !
ReplyDeleteThank you Sarnia and Miriam - I will try both.
Found !
DeleteExcept I’ve gained the impression that others know more than me.
They do not.
I now realise that I have been regularly reading the synopsis, just didn’t interpret it to the extent that others have.
Can’t remember if I’ve previously said or whether I’ve just thought it, but I’ve had a feeling for a while that Fallon will become pregnant.
ReplyDelete( my silver lining in above post )
Poor Fallon!
ReplyDeleteI was gripped and also think the chaos was reflected really well.
ReplyDeleteI think Alice is the real victim here, and I'm glad that she has a previous pattern of behaviour for getting drunk in a quiet safe place.
ReplyDeleteI thought that about revealing the pregnancy
DeleteI assumed that the Doctor had asked if Fallon wanted Harrison to be with her and she had agreed
DeleteI have had some further thoughts.
ReplyDeleteIt’s probably reasonable for the police to assume that Alice was driving the car.
I thought that too, Mrs. P, but I don't know if police would use those resorces on what looks like an open and shut case.
DeleteIf someone close to Alice has an inkling that her concerns for what she apparently did are relevant then they might push for an investigation.
DeleteChris perhaps ?
Alice deliberately put the keys in the glovebox, a strategy that has protected her before. She mentionned this to Brian and co. Hopefully, her persistent claim to have done so this time will lead to someone asking more questions about how 'she' came to be driving ...
DeleteWELL!
ReplyDeleteLots of lies in Ambridge. Very subtle, KP.
ReplyDeleteHaving to think out of the box now is George innocent and Mick going to be the instigator of the crash? When he went to help Kirsty recently I think he talked about age / health or am I imagining this? A lot going to be going on that’s for sure one way and another. On All about The Archers I watched the chat with “Joy” she is a lovely lady sounds like her character but looks younger than her voice…. Also listened to the interview with “Brian” I do like Charles Collingwood, good sense of humour too.
ReplyDeleteThe BBC's synopsis has the answer: Alice "feels sick and starts trying to open the door. Distracted, George swerves and hits an oncoming car which crashes into the river." He certainly thought he'd be held responsible!
DeleteIt has only just occurred to me that the episode synopsis for yesterday which said “there is life changing news from the hospital” - which I had expected to be somebody loosing a leg & needing a wheelchair - was actually Fallon finding out she is pregnant, which would be life changing news for her and Harrison.
ReplyDeleteBit slow on the uptake these days!
You weren’t alone in that expectation ARCHERPHILE
DeleteAll I want to know is, did Rochelle actually visit Joy? She said so, but how come no-one else met her, not even Mick.
ReplyDeleteBecause Miriam, Rochelle is doomed to be a silent character, just like old Bert’s wife Freda. ( until her final breath, did we hear her scream, or did I imagine that ? As that car rolled into the flood )
Delete☹️ Difficult conversations ahead for Harrison and Fallon.
ReplyDeleteAnd Supergeorge has deleted the incriminating message. So what happens now?
Oh dear oh dear…… Harrison ?
ReplyDeletePhew!
ReplyDeleteHmmm, they wouldn't have been in the river if George hadn't been driving.
ReplyDeleteThe car crash which put them in the river was an accident, sparked by Alice's drunken behaviour; their rescue was a matter of choice and responsibility, a sustained act calling for a cool head, physical strength adroitly applied and considerable personal courage. It should count in his favour if and when he faces prosecution.
DeleteTrue, but attempting to frame Alice, thereby perverting the course of justice won't ...
DeleteMy interest is in the psychologically complex character, George, being formed by the SW team. Clearly a person of interest in the future of Ambridge, and one whose activities will be endlessly discussed for years to come.
DeleteCongratulations TA !
DeleteEven though George has deleted that message from Will’s phone it could still be found. If the police get involved it is possible to uncover deleted items from phones. But unfortunately , I can’t imagine why the police would want to examine Wills phone.
ReplyDeleteOMG I cannot take many more twists and turns! One has to keep reforming opinion on what is going to happen next. Fallon and Harrison on the way to splitting up maybe 🤔 George gets no better of course but deleted messages are never deleted - to the police for instance always
ReplyDeleteretrievable for them.
DeleteThanks to ME I know now how to access the daily synopses but these podcasts sound equally informative.
Archerphile (and any other interested parties) google “All about The Archers” and the first drop down box states podcasts and the one below YouTube visual discussions and interviews. Happy listening/viewing. I just happened on it somehow but I’m glad that I did 🤗
DeleteThanks Lady R. I ave found them. I had to download the Apple Podcast icon so that I can listen but it seems simple to use. Up to now I have only listened to podcasts on BBC Sounds, so now my choice is much wider.
DeleteI have not downloaded any app just gone straight on from google / YouTube although I did see an apple app on the screen to download be interested to hear how you get on🤗
DeleteThere is also an "All About The Archers" Facebook page, which if join, have all this easily accessible.
DeleteI appreciate that f/b isn't for everyone, but I am only pointing this out as another or alternative, option.
Yes this is mentioned each podcast Miriam audio or visual and when an interview is recorded the end questions come from that platform but good that you mentioned it here too 🤗
DeleteI was a bit surprised that the SWs though it time to mention, in a very non-controversial way, the conflict in the Middle East. The news that there is to be a fund raising event for all the poor children affected and is supported by various religious communities in the area was quite surprising after Ambridge seemingly exists in a bubble, unaffected by the outside world.
ReplyDeleteFor me, it was very interesting hearing that there is a synagogue in Felpersham, I think this is a first for The Archers. Well done SWs
I noticed this moment too AP.
DeleteThe outside world never raised its head before.
And like you I congratulate the SWs.
Well said, Kate! You're a heroine. Every word rang true. But Harrison was too melodramatic for me, I'm afraid
ReplyDeleteYes, I know that Fallon and Harrison felt differently about this pregnancy, and perhaps even more so about the miscarriage. But I think she was wrong to forbid him from talking to someone about it. However she felt, this was the child that he had thought he would never have. A brief elation and then the pain of loss, all on top of wanting to support a wife who hadn't wanted to be pregnant. It must be so tough for him.
ReplyDeleteYes, he was wrong to yell out the news to Alice like that, but perhaps if Fallon had accepted his need to offload on *someone* the outburst wouldn't have happened.
Agree with every word Otis’s 👍
DeleteI’m sorry I didn’t make it clearer it was the production team I was criticising for the melodrama, not the character - though I guess a better actor might have pulled it off. There are ways of expressing the feelings Harrison was experiencing without yelling one’s head off or using crude language, which still convey their intensity.
DeleteKate really has grown up - agree the truth of every word.
ReplyDeleteI felt that although over dramatic Harrison was true to how I perceive his type.
Always calm, measured and reasonable, but when the gasket blows, boy does it blow !
And agree with OwiaS - H needs to talk. His best friend won’t talk to him yet tells him that he can’t talk about the situation to anyone else. Effectively lighting the fuel that blows the gasket.
Yes indeed !rs P a more mature Kate - at last!
DeleteI’m afraid I have to disagree again!
DeleteThe dreadful Brian has always been the root of the Aldridge family’s troubles.
DeleteWhat a family to grow up in. I’m surprised Kate took so long to speak her mind and am a little surprised at how insightful and supportive Jakob is being. They make a good couple.
I can imagine them filling the Lynda+Robert slot in due course!
DeleteIt never fails to amaze me that Robert at 80+ and Lynda coming up for 77 are still running their B+B at Ambridge Hall, seemingly without any outside help. I'd have thought they'd be retired to the South of France by now!
DeleteAll I want to say is, how I have appreciated the acting skills of all the actors, who are portraying this S/L.
ReplyDeleteTo think that this is a radio drama only, when it is just heard and not seen, and as such no facial expressions or visual actions to help the drama.
Personally I have admired the acting over this week
Listening to the omnibus today, knowing what was about to happen, I found myself wondering how it was recorded.
ReplyDeleteI’ve seen film of the recording studio, the props available for various sound effects, the sink for washing up sounds, the staircase etc etc.
DeleteAfter the Omnibus this morning, I still stand by my comment as to the wonderful acting by the actors..which was also done in a studio and into a microphone. This can't be easy to do with such intensity.
.
I've done the splashing in a bucket thing; it's surprisingly effective.
DeleteKPnuts’ witty header makes me smile every time! Best thing to come out of this storyline, I reckon.
ReplyDeleteHas Alice spoken with her mentor as yet or is she just hood winking family and friends? The reason being that as yet she alone knows the reason for her relapse and does not want to reveal it knowing how wrong she was to do what she did for Harry even though with the best of intentions but it will have to come out to give her the best chance of going back into a recovering alcoholic situation 🤞🏼
ReplyDeleteI think the family do know as I seem to remember that Brian said in one of his "rants" that Alice had admitted she was trying to help Harry.
ReplyDeleteAhh thanks PatriciaC 🤗
DeleteShe told Brian + Miranda after her performance in the Bull. It was mentioned in passing as it happened out of ear-shot. It was one of the 1st things heard briefly, in Sunday's omnibus, and obviously happened on the Saturday.
Delete...too add this was one of the opening scenes, on that awful Sunday, May 5th.
DeleteLisa is in this week's cast list.
ReplyDeleteTo be clear. In this evenings episode Tuesday 14 th May, Alice has told Lisa that she is not capable of recovery, does not want Lisa as her buddy and will not be returning to AAMeetings.
DeleteShe reiterated that conversation to Adam who had insisted she make the call to Lisa.
ReplyDeleteSo the moral guilt for Alice’s sad situation is convoluted, though primarily hers. A case of “the sins of the father......”
Sorry, I meant to say “if Fallon had given” etc. In his elation, Harrison seemed to have completely forgotten that Fallon most definitely didn’t want children, something that they had discussed and agreed more than once in our hearing.
DeleteIn the old days Tuesdays episode would have ended with the big crashing Barwick Green but for some reason a long while ago it was said it will never be used again I don’t remember why!
ReplyDeleteOh goodness.
ReplyDeleteI do realise it’s cleverly written and brilliantly acted but it’s not I want to listen to.
ReplyDeleteI felt sad at the end of last night’s episode but not despairing.

ReplyDeleteApologises for the deletion. I realised that I had posted my comment on the wrong page.
ReplyDeleteSorry 🤗
How great to have Ruairi back. His actor is playing the part of Shardlake in a big new Netflix TV series based on the Shardlake stories by CJ Samson and he has had great reviews. So I was surprised to hear him again tonight, thinking he would be too busy to return to TA.
ReplyDeletePerhaps he has the best solution for Alice at the moment, taking her off to London and away from all the gossiping and the controlling family
ReplyDeleteI thought their relationship was beyond repair, and I doubt if Ruari is acting with Alice's best interests in mind.
ReplyDeleteI agree about fuss-pot Paul, I find him really irritating.
This comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteIn my opinion, Paul knows the situation and is just winding Alistair up so that Alistair finally says something.
DeletePaul is not stupid.
Umm I think you are right Miriam Paul is trying to goad Alastair to breaking point that is why he is taunting him with how close his dad and mum are after the accident.
DeleteHave I missed something? There's been a serious accident with potential fatalities and I can't recall any mention of an investigation into it.
ReplyDeleteI would have thought that Alice would have been taken into custody and had her blood alcohol level tested and probably been charged with driving under the influence.
DeleteI too have been waiting to hear of the investigation and mentioned this in a post a day or so since.
Alice was taken into custody for a few hours and then released but there has been no follow up, so far. ( that we have heard of )
There has not been either any conversation with Lilian regarding Alice leaving Ambridge for London, and abandoning the stables.
DeletePerhaps though when the results of her alcohol level blood tests finally come back, it will show such high levels, that Alice would have been incapable of driving.
In last night's episode I noted the mention of Alice being on bail, so the police must be following it up.
ReplyDeleteYes I too noticed that little gem !
DeleteSo - it’s been mentioned therefore an investigation is in hand.
DeleteI wonder how the insurance claims are progressing ...😲
DeleteI was quite amused to hear that the Dead Ringers show included a scene about The Archers in last nights edition. Just goes to show that BBC programmes are not isolated and acknowledges the kerfuffle that the Alice story has caused. Quite good impersonations I thought, though not as good as their version of Liz Truss which makes me laugh every week. 😂
ReplyDeleteI also think the Michael Moseley "just one thing" ones are very good.
DeleteTracy’s attack on Alice reminded me strongly of her even more vitriolic attack on Russ, based on an unwarranted assumption.
ReplyDeleteWhat you are describing re Harry and Alice Maryellen is surely what we heard when H and A first met. An attraction between two people with similar backgrounds accents and aspirations / expectations.
DeleteThat was what I heard and interpreted from what I heard.
DeleteI would very much like this convoluted storyline to end here.
DeletePersonally, I hope Alice stays in London with Ruairi for a long time, because I have had enough of her problems for a while. So not much to enjoy in The Archers for me for at the moment apart from the Cricket.
It sounds like Roy is off to pastures new in Bulgaria.
ReplyDeleteI had so hoped this character would be recast.
DeleteNot replacing Roy a lost opportunity 🤔
Harrison needs to talk to someone - he's clearly struggling and Fallon can't/won't acknowledge that. Today's cricket match will be a taste of things to come if he keeps trying to bottle up his emotions.
ReplyDeleteHe certainly does OwiaS.
ReplyDeleteOur mild mannered reasonable copper has become a very angry man.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is, he is grieving the loss of the baby and she is not.
DeleteYes, he had recently assured her that it was more important for them to be together than for him to be a father.
ReplyDeleteWe haven’t heard about it ARCHERPHILE.
DeleteBut Kirsty mentioned that he was on the phone to Lexi, ( or was it face timing ?) a lot of the time.
DeleteI suppose it would save the casting director having to find a Roy sound-alike but it would leave a managers job free at Grey Gables……….Lily as a possible candidate?????
(Just thinking ahead and breaking my self- imposed no speculatiing rule! 😄
Mrs P. My comment about Roy + Lexi was based on what has been broadcast in TA.
DeleteThis has been many comments by Kirstyvin passing, about Roy on video calls with Lexi, so much that she said on one occasion - she felt like a gooseberry.
To add - I did say "it sounds like" not that "he is", as to my own TA listening, thoughts/ideas.
DeleteThat's enough, for now, as far as I am concerned.
Yes Miriam, your explanation is exactly as I read it.
DeleteAs I said in answer to AP, I thought it was you that had suggested it based on what you had heard Kirsty say.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone else got this map ?
ReplyDeleteI have three Ambridge maps, all slightly different.
ReplyDeleteThe Archers Addicts ‘Official map of Ambridge’ shows a third bridge over the road which leads to Ambridge Hall and the two cottages from the village. Heydon Berrow is shown as being a long way from the river. Strangely, Bridge Farm is nowhere near the river or any bridges! I can only conclude that the accident happened quite a long way out of the village and the range of my maps.
DeleteAP - I thought like you that the accident had happened way outside of the village, but from the remarks by Lily yesterday the bridge concerned was Heydon bridge, which I described in my post yesterday.
DeleteKP
ReplyDeleteIf I sent you a screen shot of my map would you be able to show it for general consumption ?
I’ve go at least one, possibly more maps of Ambridge, including I think the one you’re referring to, I’ll see if I can change the header on this thread or else open a new thread.
DeletePlease do KP, one or the other, would be helpful.
DeleteQuite pleased with myself that I managed to change the topper
DeleteAll these various maps are slightly different. I wonder which map the SWs use when they are planning stories. There must be a big one on the wall of the studio I should think. It would be very helpful if they could publish it on the BBC Archers website.
ReplyDeleteI’ve been thinking similar thoughts over the last day AP.
ReplyDeleteAlso wondering if each ‘new team’ invents their own mind map of Ambridge and works from that point.
ReplyDeleteThank you KP for providing your copy.
DeleteI am able to zoom in and enlarge it.
DeletePS.
DeletePPS. Aha! Just seen a reference to the Am flowing through the village to Borchester - so my original assumption that it’s overall direction of flow was north to south was wrong.
DeleteAfter seeing so many different theories about Rochelle and her non-appearance in Ambridge, I was tempted to come up with one of my own (apologies to any listeners who may have put the same theory forward and I missed it)..
ReplyDeleteThis is that Joy has a type of split personality disorder, in which there are two Joys coexisting: the ‘real Joy who.is childless, and her alter ego, the Joy she has created and completely believes in, who is the mother of Rochelle and grandmother of Rochelle’s children.
I rest my case!
Well whatever the truth is about Rochelle I hope we find out soon as this perplexing story has been going on for so long
DeleteIt’s a convincing enough theory Maryellen and you may be correct.
DeleteAfter this evenings edition though, and Joy’s tight lipped annoyance I’m inclined to stay with my theory.
Each time I heard him say this, the voice in my head has said ‘ No Harrison, Fallon was pregnant ‘
Tonight Fallon said it for herself.
I hold this perspective despite having been in the forefront of the campaign to allow fathers to be present at childbirth ( I’m alluding to the sixties here )
And I have applauded over the decades seeing fathers becoming more and more involved with the state of pregnancy, childbirth and the active hands on rearing of their children. Nevertheless I hold the very strong belief that it must and should be a woman’s choice to have a child or not.
Wish I could have shut you in a room with Mr S decades ago. After we were married he moved the goal posts and decided that he saw it as my duty as his wife, like it or not.
DeleteYour theory is the simplest, Mrs P, and so often it’s the simplest and most obvious solution that turns out to be the right one.
DeleteI wonder if Rochelle had died as a young child and Joy had visualised a life. I thought her reaction was odd though, angry with Mick one second and dripping sweetness with ?? the next second.
DeleteJoy was very annoyed that Mick had applied for, and had been successful in getting a local job. I think she didn’t really want him to be working nearer, perhaps even to suggest they move in together permanently.
ReplyDeleteWhich made me wonder if Joy is, in fact, still married and hiding away from a still existing husband?
Perhaps Rochelle, if she exists, sided with her father after the break up/ escape and that is why there is no contact.
Who knows, it’s just another theory!
Perhaps Rochelle is a mind worm
DeleteI’ve been mildly intrigued by Joy since she arrived in Ambridge.
ReplyDeleteFirstly simply because she simply arrived as a newcomer.
The Philip Larkin poem was an unexpected delight. - thanks very much, TA team! I didn’t know it but have now taken it to heart.
ReplyDeleteThe tendency of parents adversely to affect their children's, and hedhehogs', life chances ...
DeleteBut yes, it's a gem of a poem. Thank you TA.
Wedding Wind is my favourite Larkin poem. Happiness unalloyed - unless the reader sees the wind and the banging stable door as a prophecy ........
DeleteI think Freddie will be forced to terminate The Slaughterman.
ReplyDeleteI thought that was all very clunky.
ReplyDeleteA new character, driver, hard up, working all hours he can get, and small items of deliveries gone walkerbout !
DeleteGood points maryellen!
DeleteI was pleased that TA is having a story-line about D Day. Mr CC's father was a serving soldier in the landings. I wish that we had been able to talk to him about it but he very rarely would and we felt it important to respect those wishes.
ReplyDeleteI like the D-Day storyline too - much more interesting and worthwhile than the infillers we usually get nowadays. I was expecting Lynda to enlist one of the farming community to recreate the agricultural scene during WW2, did I miss it? Maybe she will talk about the Dig for Victory campaign herself.
ReplyDeleteShe has asked Chelsea to demonstrate the famous Victory Roll hairstyle popular back then. My Mum wore that hairstyle for several years after the war so I hope Radio Times or somewhere publish a photo. It would be good to have a few LandGirls featured too, though I can only think of Pip and Stella being suitable for the role.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, what a brilliant idea, Land Girls would be an excellent line of approach to the agricultural aspects of the War. Anyone got Lynda’s phone no?
DeleteI was very worried by Chelsea’s description of the victory roll.
DeleteWhat she described was tight curls around the head.
Not my understanding of a victory roll.
Discuss :
I stand corrected, having just been watching some demonstrations.
DeleteMy previous understanding was that the VR was at the back of the head, the hair being rolled up with a ribbon to create a roll of hair at the nape of the neck.
DeleteAh ! So I haven’t misremembered then.
DeleteThank you ME.
The SW got lucky with Sundays cricket weather, it was indeed very warm!
ReplyDeleteCricket in Ambridge has become rather noisy these days. No longer the lounging in a deckchair while husband and boyfriend stroll out to the crease, face a few balls and return, silently, politely, to the pavilion for tea.
ReplyDeleteNow we have the likes of Chelsea & friends shrieking if they catch a ball or hit one over the boundary.
ReplyDeleteI’m wondering if Lilian is going to let Shula know about the Strangles outbreak at the stables.
Delete...and who will pay Dukes vet bills, Oliver or The Stables?
DeleteI’ve just left my comment on Thursday episode on the wrong blog, not only that but the older one too…maybe you can help KP🤔

ReplyDeleteAn excellent D Day Tribute episode ⭐️
I absolutely understood Fallons words regarding feelings of potential loss and in circumstances of high emotional moments they tend to sneak up!
👍👏🏻KP
DeleteI have only listened with half an ear this week, I’ll have to re-listen
ReplyDeleteYes, a lovely episode for D Day commemorations. Beautifully written and acted I thought.
ReplyDeleteCan somebody remind me of the past connection between Chelsea and Ben that was alluded to last night. I’ve clearly forgotten whatever it was as I was mystified by that reference in last nights episode.
ReplyDeleteLike others I felt the day’s importance was marked very well indeed.
It was after Ben and Beth split up, something to do with Vince + Brookfield?. Ben went to an event at LL and got drunk. Quite a while later Chelsea found out she was pregnant. Ben it eventually turned out was the father, and Chelsea went through a late termination.
DeleteThat's how I remember it..
Thank you Miriam- I had completely forgotten that.
DeleteDon’t I always say that TA just washes over me ?
Evidence I’d say !
Mrs P. That is only my own recollection as to the situation. It might not be that accurate and expect others can clarify it for you.
DeleteThanks Miriam, what you’ve explained is enough, I don’t need any further clarification.
