I am on the cardiac ward.
Was whisked up here without any warning, although I knew it was planned, at 2pm today, greeted by a nurse who was immediately about the business of getting me a cup of tea when another person arrived with another wheelchair to take me off for a scan. Was told by the technician that it would take about half an hour ,and all was proceeding when suddenly th door opened, a nurse rushed in gabbling words I didn’t understand. But the technician did understand and when the procedure was over told me that I was to go to the day centre unit close by. This I did to be greeted by the same nurse who had rudely interrupted a procedure and further fast speaking in an accent I failed to understand. Repeatedly Insisting that I got on the bed, and clearly disregarding what must have presented as a very worried face, I finally repeated in a loud voice “ please tell me what is going on “ when the answer came “you are having a pacemaker “ and I said NOW ! and the answer yes, I had the courage to say “ I’m not ready “.
The consultant came, gently talked me through what to expect, understood that I was still processing the events of the last few days, and I was taken back to the ward.
Shortly afterwards a registrar came with further understanding followed by nurses doing the same. I felt that I had beeb churlish in refusing to be bundled in such a hurried way, but knew I was right to act in the way I had.
This evening I’ve been told that I’m on the list for Thursday

Thank you Miriam for that information about your relative.
That information gives me a better understanding of what to expect.
    I’m grateful.

Just what I didn’t want today - received an email from my sister in law, saying she was laid up with a cold so could I contact her by email as she couldnt speak on phone having lost her voice. I assumed it was to pass on birthday greetings.
So I replied, as requested, only to find out later that her account had been hacked and the email wasn’t from her at all! So have spent over an hour on phone to BT trying to sort things out, create a new password for my emails so I can continue using my same email address as before. Mr A also had the same email which, fortunately he didn’t open.
What a pain these thing are!

    Happy birthday Archerfile🎂💐🎉
My son has told me not to open any email if I don't know the sender, but it sounds like fraudsters are becoming very clever if they are now pretending to be relatives. An exasperating thing to happen on your birthday. Hope the rest of the day is better.

Even if he sender's name is correct the address may be different. Always worth checking. Sorry to hear this - it's happened to me in the past and they completely cleared my account.

Gave them access to all the clergy in the area, complete with hymn lists and bible readings. Hardly the treasure trove they had anticipated I imagine.

What a lovely late afternoon, warm, calm and no winds. It is obviously the lull before the storm, if the forecast + weather warnings for tomorrow are true.
If there is a storm tomorrow it will be just typical, as to my windows + doors were cleaned today.

Hope Mrs P. is OK as to with Sarnia.

  8. Mrs. P, that's fantastic. I bet you can hardly believe it, all so quick from the diagnosis to surgery. I hope you have a very speedy recovery. I wonder if you will be discharged tomorrow, being a Friday, or if the hospital will want you to stay in until Monday.
It seems very quick to discharge you if it is tomorrow, how do you feel about it?

  11. Hmmm, Mrs. P. It might be nice for you to go to Cornwall and relax there for a week or two, get your meals cooked for you. It is difficult when everyone has an opinion though. Perhaps Simon could take you down, and keep Lady for a little bit longer? A sun lounger and sea views would make a lovely convelescence.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Well done Mrs P. Are you going to change your name to Mrs E now 😀. Let them know at the hospital you live alone and that it would help if you could stay there until Monday. Is there a cottage hospital in the area that you could convalesce in for a couple of weeks? If you went to convalesce in Cornwall could you take Lady with you. Mistral's sun lounger sounds a lovely idea, and you need to be somewhere where you are not tempted to try to do too much too soon!

    1. The system wants my bed to be empty.
One or two of the nurses are sympathetic to me staying over the weekend after having a terrible sleepless night. For some reason my X-ray was delayed but has now been done.
I have just been told that I won’t be discharged today.

As for the subject of my daughters I brought them up to understand that they were independent women and that meant I was too.
The other side of that coin is that I have never relied on them to be there for me and I do not expect them too.
One has a full time job and a family and the other is running a business with associated responsibilities.
My eldest did ask if I wanted her to come up yesterday to be with me, and my answer was thank you but a firm NO.

I do realise that family dynamics are very different in many families, but having been raised with low expectations of closeness I’ve clearly passed that on and I would hate what the lady in the next bed has, which is her husband sitting in a chair from ten in the morning until eight at night. They don’t actually speak to each other most of the time. Just sit in there respective chairs.
      It would suffocate me.

Janice I was amazed at your care after hospital, there does not appear to be any here as there wasn’t in Gloucestershire either.
As for going to Cornwall, it does partly appeal but also has tremendous drawbacks that create considerable tensions.

      Delete
    2. Mrs P. Why have you said NO to a daughter who was prepared to come to stay and help?
She probably wants to help you and make sure her Mum is doing OK.
If you refuse this help, who else will give it??
Sorry to say this, but is bed-blocking a good thing? Remember the delay as to you waiting to get onto the cardiac ward, so to then to be sorted out.
Sorry, but think positively and use your family who seem willing to do so.
Things can be sorted out and in a good way.
There comes a time when willing help has to be accepted, be it just in a short-term.
Swallow your pride, and for once just say yes!

Said too much, I know!! 😵
No offence intended and I do wish you well. 🤗

      Delete
    3. No offence taken Miriam - but my daughter was not offering to come and stay. She would have driven up to be here when I went into the Cath Lab and been here when I emerged, then would have driven back to Cornwall late at night. I didn’t need anyone with me, I am very self sufficient and fine alone. Not worried not frightened.
As for bed blocking, I am exhausted today having been as good as mugged yesterday and unable to sleep last night, and know my body and how it work’s extremely well.
Whenever I’ve been discharged from hospital early I’ve collapsed within a day, sometimes that night.
If I have to I will go home on the bus !

      And it’s not pride.
It is independence and self sufficiency

      Delete
    4. To add Mrs P. How will your daughters feel, as to being told NO, I don't need you! This might be also upsetting to them, who after all are thinking caringlly about you and your health + welfare.
      This is your choice obviously.
No doubt you will now hate + detest my thoughts understandably so, but I went through with my late Dad, and was pleased to try + help in out, so he could live his normal life in his own home and in the way he liked.

  14. Change of subject...
Nectar cards - like Miriam, I have had all my points stolen yesterday. I phoned Nectar, they have cancelled my account etc, sending a new card, very helpful, no issues. They said my card had been cloned, either by someone taking a photo of the barcode, or by a magnetic srtip on the till.
As I use the smartshop handheld device, the only time I flash my card is when I scan it onto the handheld thing. I usually do this in a quiet corner so as not to get in peoples way, but this last time I was rushing and in a different store I am not familiar with, so was probably less careful.
Anyway, lesson learned, the only thing lost has been my time, but honestly, I hope the theives in Uxbridge do not enjoy their stolen goods.

    1. It's happening a lot. I still think it is hacking into the Nectar App, where a digital card is shown that can be used with a scanner.
I like you, always scan my card well away from anyone, and it goes straight back into a RFID wallet.
I still have not got my stolen points back, nor those left on the old account, but told it could take at least 4 weeks.
The problem when got new card, set up new account, the offers that I got were nothing I ever buy! It will take time for my preferred shopping to become known again.
It's so annoying though, to think someone somewhere has been able to do this.
Beware to be inundated with scam calls for awhile!!

      Delete
    2. Miriam, I asked about it being hacked, data compromised etc, I spoke to two people who assued me that wasn't possible, but who knows? I'm sure criminals are more savvy than help-desk staff...I seldom answer my phone anyway, but will turn it off for a couple of days to be on the safe side. I'm glad you posted about it on here, it wasn't such a shock and I knew what to do, thank you.

  21. More bad news from daughter today.
The guests who were still in the cottage when the ceiling came down ( less than one square foot in a corner ) have now demanded the full weeks cost of the cottage be returned.
Son in law noticed that on arrival of the following couple, the man looked pleased but the woman looked very sour faced. Daughter and husband had worked their socks off to make the cottage very presentable and had told guests what had happened, but by nine am this morning the guests had gone, wrote an email complaining of damp carpet, misted windows ( closed overnight daughter noticed ) and mould growing, and demanding their paid upfront cost be returned.
When daughter went into cottage and tested the carpet by treading a wodge of kitchen roll into the carpet it was dry, there was no misting on the windows and no sign of mould.
It is so frustrating and testing to be unable to be of any assistance and with what feels like empty words of sympathy.
One bright moment when the gusts in the second cottage also left but with a lovely warm and encouraging review, as most of their reviews are.

This is probably a useless bit of info, but years ago we took the children to the gnome and pixie farm, and two of them there in the herb garden had reached 100 and reckoned it was to do with drinking lemon balm tea every morning with, if liked, a little bit of honey and lemon juice for taste. So after that I planted lots of lemon balm ( and it does spread!) as a longevity herb but it does also have a mildly soothing, calming effect if anxious. It can be bought as tea bags, and you can use 2 to make it stronger. I am thinking of picking some now! as have just been phoned up unexpectedly from some relatives with 3 boisterous teenagers who are on holiday not far away. Have managed to put them off coming today on the grounds last-minute-Leticia is needing to finish her final project ( mosses and algae) for the open university course by midnight tonight. They are coming tomorrow instead and daughter in law is going to bake a cake, and I am going to well and truly cheat with the savouries, and have booked egg and ham pie slices and some quiche from the farm shop that my son will collect later. ( My daughter's 20 year old bright red hyundai coupe, that was my son's before he had a baby, collapsed in a heap going out on bumpy lanes to moss and algae woods and had to come back with Road Rescue!).

He is a diver who checks out underwater government and oil installations in case they need repair, and then has to write up reports. My cousin said he would be up until 2am the day before writing a report due in the next day. Both would say they work better under pressure. Definitely my mum's side of the family. It would worry me leaving things that late! My dad would be outside waiting in the car for my mum, invariably late, and then when they were eventually driving she would say "can't you go faster or we will be late!! " Used to do the same with me too! 🤨

  34. Reply to Mrs P. and thank you for asking. Please ignore this those who don't want to read about health, although in many ways things have turned out better than expected for me.
Referred to Stroke clinic and in hospital briefly in April. Nice "Acting " Stroke Consultant doctor
still young enough to be enthusiastic about her job, said that I had had ministrokes but that following the visit to her there would be a cascade of other appointments to find out exactly what had happened, and indeed there were, 2 headscans, MRI, heart monitor to wear, physio, stroke clinic nurse appointments ( eat less cheese or fat free and I love cheese in all varieties, fat free might as well be plastic! Plus other useful healthstuff), lots of surgery blood tests and adjusting of medicines, little bumps gardening resulting in big bruises because of blood thinners, etc. Any way it took about 3 months and then all the results had finally arrived at her desk and she had a good look through them and then wrote a report sent both to me and the surgery doc. I also had a nice email from her, and I was really surprised at her findings.
She said that although there was some brain shrinkage visible in the scans that that can be a normal part of ageing, and there was no sign of any major stroke damage. The possibilty was still there that I had had tias that the body had dissolved before the scans but on the whole, and also partly because my being off balance walking and dizzy spells and lack of energy had continued despite the blood thinners, she felt that on balance it was more likely to be due to an inner ear problem, and I could stop taking the Clopidogrel. (Yaaay!) Apparently the symptoms of that and Tias are very similar. So after over 3 months of being told I had had mini strokes, and I must admit worrying about it, I am now on the waiting list for an ENT appointment. Next week I have a surgery appointment with a different doctor who has experience of doing something called the Eply manoevre exercise which can help if the problem is caused by "crystals" in the ear getting in the wrong place, so we shall see.
The physio exercises fortunately are the same for balance whatever the cause. The info booklet from stroke clinic nurse said get trekking poles, then you will look like an athlete and not an invalid. So I now have two very pretty purple sticks I use when out on the lane. Thank you to everyone who expressed sympathy and gave advice back in April.
I thought ears were for hearing with, and didn't realise they play such a part in balance.

    1. Janice. After all this time, and if you can afford to do so, why not ask for a private ENT initial consultation appointment? This may give you some immediate thoughts + ideas, as to ear problems. Anything resulting from this, can still be done on the NHS.

      Delete
    2. That is a thought Miriam thank you. I will see what happens at next week's appointment, am hoping that might help.

  35. Oh, Janice, what a time you've had of it! I must admit I was concerned at the earlier mention of tias because a friend of mine had a series of them and lost a little more of his sight with each one.

Yes, the inner ear is very much concerned with balance - it's the movement of the sea messing with the inner ear that causes sea-sickness.

I hope you are surrounded with the love and support that you need, because navigating these experiences alone can be debilitating.

    1. I’m glad I asked JANICE -

My goodness what a tale !
I’ve felt since this first started for you that you seem to have a very good health authority and it certainly seems that you do.
As Sarnia says, the inner ear is so important for many reasons but most specifically for our balance.
However I would to to offer another piece of advice if I may.
Age UK do classes throughout the UK for ‘ Strength and Balance ‘. This is a service specifically designed for older frail people, ( not suggesting you are)
But I do them and I’m strong and have excellent balance.
I do them to keep my strength and my balance going whilst I still have those abilities.
It might be worth your while to find out if there is a class near you.
If there is not, I’ve seen these on Utube. Exercising for your feet, toes and heels to keep your leg’s strong and such things as walking backwards as well as many others are all very worthwhile.

Thank you so much for answering, I think of you often, and I’m pleased that you seem to have found the answer to what happened.

  39. Is it just me, or is Autumn starting early this year, well in my area.
The last few days have been lovely + sunny, but it only heats up mid afternoon.
For the last few days, I have had very heavy dews, and the nights are so cool, I am getting condensation on the outside of the windows each morning. It is strange getting up and not being able to see outside!
This is due to the type of windows I have, in that the warm air inside, does not pass through to the outside - cold outside glass means outside condensation.
I had to wait until well after lunch, before I could mow the back lawn. As it was long it was far too wet to mow before, but I did try!
I saw a very agile 🐈‍⬛ yesterday. In she came with a bird, let it go, she chased it around as I opened all the windows + doors for escape routes. The bird was flying towards one, when 🐈‍⬛ leapt from standing to 3.5 to 4 ft into the air, catching the bird with her paws. It was amazing to see. Anyway I got her as she landed, rescued the bird which was released.
I have never seen a cat do that before.

  41. Here the aircraft either fly along the street past the front of the house (at about 800ft) and leave towards the North and double back over Romsey, or come in via Gamble and Winchester and leave over my Greek courtyard

Strangely enough, the easyJet are not too bad, as we only get airbus A319 or 320. The noisiest are the BA Embraer 190s, which sound like Armageddon and take a long time to fade.

When the car was ready I was sent an email with a link to pay for it online. 2. It would seem most unfair if they take away the single person's discount Miriam. One person doesn't use the resources a family does. I am wondering exactly what we are getting for this ever rising tax. No street lights in our local area, massive potholes, and we rarely see a policeman ( I suppose that is good really as it must mean we are in a low crime area).
Something that I think is a shame is that it is virtually impossible now to get a washing machine that has pipes from both the hot and cold water supply, only from the cold so that electricity then has to be used to heat up the water. For someone like me with a rayburn, or others with solar panels etc, that is a waste of hot water that could be used.

      Delete
    3. I’ve used an almost cold wash for at least the last fifteen years if not twenty Janice. Also my understanding is that washing products are now designed for a less hot wash now. I inherited my washing machine when I bought my Cotswold cottage and brought it with me here so that’s we’ll over ten years old now too, and I believe mine has only a cold water feed.

      Delete
    4. I do t think a cold/cool wash kills all the bacteria on the clothes. I wash bedding and towels at 70 degrees and anything else at 40. I do use the speed perfect button to cut down the length of the wash though to save on the electric.

    5. The instruction manual for my washing machine says that using speed perfect increases energy consumption.

  47. I have a Bosch cold feed machine with speed perfect option which I mostly use but a YouTube video on the machine says best to use the economy cycle even though it is about 3 hrs uses less electricity and cleans well. Mine is a washer / dryer and has sensors and a spinning action that only uses the time required. Many towels have 40c wash on them now although maybe not on white ones?
Anything though is better than the all day Monday hand washing with the assistance of a burco
boiler and a spin dryer of years ago. I still appreciate my machine so much. 🙏🏼⭐️

I can remember when very young of having an oldfashioned mangle out in the washhouse for getting the water out of the clothes, and once or twice having my own dripping wet long hair put into it! and it was cold out there too!
My daughter in law thinks having a washing machine the height of luxury. After teaching all week she then used to spend her Saturdays washing her family's clothes in a tub (elderly mother, sister, and two little nieces and a nephew who they were bringing up).

      Delete
    2. I had a mangle when I had my first home - in a basement flat in Chelsea - and my first baby in 1966.
It was kept in the garden just outside the back door.
I wonder now where it came from ? Probably via my mum.
I think it was sometime before I got a spin dryer and the washing machine, a twin tub, came some years later.

      Delete
    3. I so remember a mangle outside! I have a very old dog-eared B+W photo of myself by it.
After my Dad died and clearing out his bungalow, the base of this was found
I think he once used it as a work-bench. It was just dumped, old, rusty but my younger sister took it.
It was up-cycled by her, and it is now the base of a daughter of hers, ie niece to me, sewing machine table. It is lovely to see this, as it must be over 70yrs old now.

That is a shame about the shutters, but I wonder if you could contest that decision ? I would have thought those windows along with the building were Georgian in which case they may well have had shutters originally, although they would not have been modern slatted shutters.

Can you see any evidence on the side of the windows ? Also was it a visit or a phone consultation ? Have you looked on Pinterest for window treatments ? Might be worth a look.
Perhaps we can go to Widdecombe Fair together next year.

  60. That's a shame Mrs P. Console yourself with the thought the weather is probably going to be wet and windy there tomorrow. Hope you are making good progress.
I saw quite an upbeat doctor last week. He wouldn't do the Eply manoevre because he felt it might make the arthritis in my neck worse ( so that is what that occasional stiff crunchiness is! ), but he was very positive about the brain being a wonderful thing that could, given time, adapt to different ways of working.

    1. Yes Janice I went in the car to the surgery today and my first drive. Not difficult but I did make sure to drive carefully. I’m usually known as a pretty ‘ nippy ‘ driver. Only about three miles there and then back again. Saw the Dr that sent me off to hospital and she was clearly pleased to see me, and my diagnosis was what she thought it would be so that pleased her too. I asked if I could give her a hug, and she stood up, smiled, and said yes of course. I think Iv’e found my ‘go to ‘ GP now, which gives me greater confidence than I’ve had so far since I’ve been here.

As for your neck, I think many people have crunchy necks, I certainly do.
I must look up this Eply manoeuvre and see if it is what my osteopath used to do for me.
It sounds as though you too have also found a doctor that you have confidence in going forward. I do hope so.

    2. Mrs. P. Well done for driving again, but best of all, in finding a GP you trust, have confidence with and feel so able to talk to.
This must be so reassuring for you.
Hope your progress continues in such a positive way.

    3. Thanks Miriam- agree it’s SO important and yes, I do feel reassured by meeting her again today. She was so clearly very pleased to see me.
As I’m writing this I’m also realising that she had confidence in me, that I would return to see her, as she said she was waiting to see me rather than just following through the recommendations made by the registrar.
Although today’s appointment was made some weeks ago, before my emergency and was about following up on something entirely different.

  61. How costs have changed. My little home is a "mock tudor" style, so has wooden decorative styling on the front. It looks lovely but needs maintenance. The last time the wood was stained + made weatherproof, was about 8 yrs ago.
Sadly I can see this deterioritating again.
I found on my local community site, just the right person to re-do this again. OMG what a difference in price, even though I renegotiated the quote. I played the senior citizen card again, so got the quote down.
It's needs must but still not happy with the quote, but felt comfortable with them which is also important for me, as a single home-owner.
This job will be done in about 3-4 weeks time, but at least I know this wood will not deteriate more over the winter.
Now to sort out a full length dining area curtain.
🐈‍⬛ was chasing a live bird, shinned up the curtain to try to get it, and the curtain came down breaking all the curtain fixtures...no idea how to fix this yet, as the fittings cannot just be replaced were sewn into the pleats..complicated to resolve.

  62. Miriam, that is annoying for you, who knew curtains could cause so many problems? Just at the wrong time of year now its getting cold and dark early.

Mrs P, yes, Georgian windows, full length, The frames are obviously much newer, it was all refurbished about eight years ago, so no sign of previous fittings. The Planning Officer said I could apply for planning permission but she was sure I wouldn't get it. How they could let the hideous blinds and even worse nets slip past them, goodness only knows. The blinds are so irritating that I don't bother with them, but the bedroom faces the front so any passing person walks within 5' of my head, providing they stick to the path. The gardener was here this morning, I literally pulled the duvet over my head and hoped he didn't look too closely!
The outside window boxes are a nice idea, I have seen it done, but not really practical against the cold and dark. I am getting someone in to look at made to measure fabric blinds which I dont want, but will solve the issues to an extent. I don't think curtains are a soltion because the amount of fabric would be really heavy, not sure about the ceiling supporting them, also how do you open and close them without drag??? I was quite pleased with the shutter solution, next door has them, but they are old...

  63. Mistral I wasn't sure if you were asking permission for external or internal window shutters. If internal I would have a go at applying because they are a Georgian era thing. Personally I think you are a saint 😇 doing things by the book, but probably less worrying for you if you have the proper permissions.
If Evelyn was still with us I would have mentioned the Ryde Art Collective's exhibition at Quarr Abbey to her this next coming 12 days. I remember she used to walk her dogs in the Abbey's grounds.
My sister in law has an exhibit there ( her art is a sort of modern mix of sculpture and technology) using some of the small organ pipes from the very old too expensive to repair organ from the church here. ( I had been persuaded years ago to store the pipes, some huge, in a shed by the churchwarden who didn't have the heart to burn them. Some of the smallest pipes were turned into bird boxes.) She also has a recording, with her own background piano accompaniment, of the Quarr Abbey monks singing a Gregorian chant. Normally the "artwork" is part of the Escape Room which she was instrumental in organising/designing in Ryde.

You have reminded us of Ev - think you - but you’ve also reminded me of The Island and my mother in laws house near to where Ev lived and also very close to Quarre Abbey where I used to walk with her, as well as my daughter’s beautiful Georgian house just outside Ryde and of course my fond memories of so many happy childhood Island holidays.
I hope it’s a successful exhibition for your SinL, and I must look up the escape room in Ryde.

I’ve spoken with Mistral at length this morning and urged her to pursue the issue of the shutters despite the telephone consultation with the ( ill informed IMO ) planning officer. It transpires that Mistral has the original interior shutters in her shed, pointed out to her by the previous owners of the flat, so in my opinion she has a good case to argue for the replacement of those shutters, backed up by the precedent of the neighbouring flat having theirs in situ. However it is a long term project into the future and her current concern is her privacy and the look of her new home.
I’m keeping an eye on her as Miriam is keeping an eye on me re DVLA and my insurance company.

Lady has gone off with the main dog walking friend for her first complete away day without me.
A huge step forward after four years !

    1. If you do look up the Escape room, you would need to look for The Lost Crypt escape room. It is in a real crypt in what used to be a church but is now a community centre called Aspire, and among other things it links people with problems to helping agencies.

  65. Mrs P now that a new series of “The Chase” has started I keep wondering if Ev’s Katy will be appearing. She did promise to let us know so hopefully she will when or if she gets told the airing date herself. Gather it can be anything up to 2 yrs until recorded shows are shown which seems quite bizarre to me considering how many repeats are shown….

  66. "I cannot believe it!". Yes I do sound like Victor Meldrew, but I was astounded today that the seasonal ailse in the supermarket
was half filled with Christmas goods. No doubt in the next week or two, the other half will be Halloween rubbish.
Ooh I am getting grumpy these days...😂🥵
