Ruairi is in the cast this week so something may be brewing! When all comes out George in particular will be in big trouble re asking for and taking £2000 from Brian to keep the truth hidden
Once he knew for sure who attacked him. Possibly this will “blow” when baby is due and back to jail George goes, while Brad will be asked by George to lend a shoulder of support for Amber and baby?

No mention has been made of George having passed the tests and got a commercial licence to operate his drone. He would need some money to pay for all that.

George's recording of Brian's confession was not there for nothing and Brian himself sounded wary last night, so await something further down the line.

Brian first suggested a donation to the drone business as a bribe because he thought it was an enterprise likely to take George away from Ambridge and so reduce the threat he posed. George’s counter proposal of a sheep rearing business wouldn’t do that, hence Brian’s point blank refusal. I think the drone business will happen one way or another, and George is a fixture on the cast list

Why was Anna relying on Ruth to go + sort Carol out, as Brookfield is only her landlord, not her carer.
Besides isn't Helen more involved, as Anna rang her after Carol's fall?

    1. Miriam - Ruth had offered to help, she probably feels Brookfield has some responsibility towards its tenant and besides, Carol isn’t any old tenant but her mother in law’s close friend and maybe an ‘honorary aunt’ to Jill’s children. I thought Anna rang Helen, her ex-client and another contact in Ambridge, because she couldn’t get Ruth, but I could be wrong there!

Anyway, the storyline gives Leonard the opportunity to undertake something he can reasonably do without Jill now her actor is out of action. He has no reason to be in Ambridge other than her, which must make it difficult for the scriptwriters.

    2. Maryellen, good point, Leonard seems to be an all round sympathetic helper, as long as he doesn't get too involved with Carol, which would cancel the idea of Bert.

  4. I think Leonard has become an established member of the Ambridge community now and I would be sorry to see him move on.
But I must admit to being biased as that voice is amongst a very few number that I need a regular fix of.

  5. Oh how timely your heading is to me personally.
My neighbour upstairs fell in the night, in hospital with a broken hip within two hours of the fall due to her pendent.
The other neighbour giving me a kindly talking to regarding me having a pendent, followed by me just ten minutes ago, having a fall backwards into a container of water just outside my back door.
However, I am still very able to extricate myself and get up.
With not even a bruise, just some wet trousers.

Carol may be curmudgeonly and irritating to her daughter, but I will continue to maintain that old people should be allowed to make their own decisions about needs while they can.
And in my opinion Carol Tregorran is still able to do so.
She may appear to be in denial, but I suspect her apparent denial masks a fear of loss of agency.

    1. OK - just some wet trousers MrsP
Carol is not much in denial, she agreed with Leonard after the visit of the care consultant that a step-up stool would be useful (would have to have handles in her case) as she keeps plates and utensils on the kitchen tops, unable to reach the cupboards easily.

      Delete
    2. and didn't she agree to a "perching stool" to use when doing the washing up?

    3. If a falls pendant is perceived as an old persons device buy an Apple Watch with falls and car crash detection and feel down with the kids - like me 🤣 you need a watch as well unless you buy a cellular device. Also works wherever you are not just house or garden!

      Delete
    4. I think it would be more sensible for Carol to keep on keeping the things she needs on a daily basis on the counter tops within easy reach. A step up stool for someone her age could be a recipe for disaster.

      Delete
    5. I probably got it wrong and it was the "perching stool" as Miriam said but she does have stairs and Anna said they were dangerous, so she'll need some support there.

    6. I think it would be more sensible for Carol to continue to keep the things she needs on a daily basis on the counter tops. A step up stool for someone in their mid? 90's could be a trip hazard. It seems to me that Anna when grumbling about the things on the countertops was thinking about about tidiness rather than safety

    8. I'm trying to think back to when Jill + Phil lived in Glebe. The only mention of the stairs I remember, was when they were trying to hang a photo on the stair wall (Kenton getting the measurements wrong). It didn't seem that narrow or dangerous then, as they were on step ladders with drills..and there was a hall which the lounge went off. It didn't sound like the narrow cottage stairways off the main room, so often the case in some country cottages.

    9. I have had to get a perching stool (quite a big stool actually) for cooking as I cannot stand at the worktop or cooker for more than 5 mins. Dishwasher does the washing up!

  6. I so understand Carol + Anna, as it was the same as myself and my late father.
Carol so wants to try + keep her independence in whatever way she can, even though she must struggle at times but won't admit it.
As such she gets frustrated and takes it out on others, so appears cantakerous.
Anna is just as frustrated with Carol, as she realises that things can be done to help Carol, but is too organising (that was me and my big sister!).
Leonard is the "happy medium" to smooth the way as to making Carol see that some things are useful l, to help her keep her independence (in my case, this was my younger sister).
I think the SW's are doing this incredibly well, as it is very realistic, well in my experience.

  7. Just to say our neighbour the long distance night driver sent me a picture of a poster from the Hall for Cornwall in Truro. As part of the 75th celebrations Lilian, Jazzer, Brian and Tracey are appearing there in June, and it is hosted by someone called Angela Barnes a comedian and Archers fan. Don't know if I will get there as I am still not back to driving longer journeys, but might be able to persuade my daughter to come and drive.

    1. I think the contrast between the two young men is good dramatic material. We’ve got George, the underdog, buoyant with plans for the future, and privileged Ruairi, hopelessly snivelling and wanting his mum. It won’t have escaped listeners that Ruairi is doing George’s old job. I can imagine a future in which George becomes Ruairi’s employer. The question is will Brian be around to see it?

    2. A scenario in which George employs Ruairi might be more of a ‘punishment’ for Brian than anything the Law can do! Meantime, there’s the Miranda situation to be sorted....

  14. So, is it really all over then? Done? Sorted? In the end, It all seemed a bit too easy; Ruairi confesses to George, George happy to forgive him, even offering counselling advice? Have we been put through weeks of speculation and drama for this damp squib of an ending?

It caused a rift in the Grundy family who were prepared to face the facts and it'll cause a rift for the Aldriges who aren't. There will be questions as to where the money came from.

    2. On this weeks Archers Podcast the question was asked…….. is this SL over now then ?
The resounding cry from everyone was NO !

Ruari himself, Arthur the actor said that he thought it would go on within R for years, and talked a lot about Rs mental health.
There was also a lot of discussion around friendship between R and G.

      Worth a listen.

  18. Now Ian knows as well about Ruairi and he loves to gossip. I think Ian may become manager of GG so Oliver can retire. Was any reason given for Dane’s departure-I think he was supposed to be there for a fixed contract to trouble shoot.

I concluded that Helen giving him the Heave Ho, suggested his choice to depart the village.
And also like you, I suspect Oliver is to be faded out, or perhaps given a new role in his retirement as Miranda’s beaux with only an occasional appearance. Although he appears only infrequently now.

  19. I didn't realise Dane had gone permanently, thought he was just away on some course or other.
Delighted Ian's hard work was recognised by Oliver and hope he can keep the new position, sounds more interesting than what he has been doing. And as for Brad, I feel so sorry for him, wrestling with the reappearance of his useless father and asking if it was 'all right' not to see him. How sad!

  20. I think Dane knew he was being moved on by the major shareholding company of GG who sent him there as the temporary manager.

Couldn't she ask for a test herself in any case.
One son would like to know, but no pressure, the other one doesn't want to know.
I remember thinking when Ruth had her last child, if it was advisable to have children after cancer.

  24. If Ruth is to calm Pip she will have to go private because as stated the procedure via the NHS will be a lengthy wait and if not carrying the brac - then case closed and Pip and Ben can relax. Although if not good news they would still have to wait for their appointments….

  26. I'm far more interested in Carol in Glebe Cottage and how long she can independantly stay there.
Then there is Anna wanting the landlords, Brookfield, to suddenly magic up a downstairs shower room!
Anna as a lawyer, must know what tenants agreements include, which does not expect landlords being obliged to change the structure of a property to suit the tenant, at the detriment of the property.

  28. Pip's reaction to the breast cancer testing really surprises me. She has always seemed so ultra-capable, hard working and confident. I shouldn't have expected her to go to pieces like this, over a test which she doesn't have to have. We've done Sepsis, altzheimers and now breast cancer . What's next? Which young character will find themselves at college when meningitis breaks out & will need antibiotics. As you know I'm also listening to older TA episodes and an example of humour from 2009:-
Kenton gets a tattoo in Chinese writing, Kathy + a friend tell him he's been conned, as it says "Closed for Cleaning".
      Simple but funny, and missed.

    3. To add.
The light-hearted interludes in Ambridge seem to be lacking, and have been for some time.
Where are Lynda, Joy, Susan, Jolene + Kenton - to just liven things up in some way.
The last I remember was Burns Night + the Highland Games, with Jazzer miming his bagpipes to a music track.
      Has there been anything since?

    4. I guess different things make different listeners chuckle. I like witty dialogue more than situational humour, assuming it’s not at somebody’s expense. I used to enjoy Brian Aldridge’s one liners (the only thing I liked about him), but they dried up some time ago and there’s not much chance of them now.

      Delete
    5. Apologies - I think I've said all that before!. The current storylines I could do without are the pregnancies - two is overkill!

      Delete
    6. There were two parallel pregnancies of Emma and Helen, who thought she knew all about it being her first and Emma saying she should calm down. Helen had preeclampsia and Henry's birth coincided with Nigel's death as was intended. Keira was born a couple of months later.
Now there's Amber's first and Kirsty's second late pregnancy. She had refused some cheese then because of listeria but had a steak and ale pie this time.

      Delete
    7. I like that idea of parallel pregnancies + babes.
Kirsty - so natural, calm, takes everything in her stride and loves everything with junior.
Amber - Motherhood is not what she imagined, doesn't get her figure back quickly, is very tired and struggles with everything, esp. putting her make-up on to hide her dark ringed eyes to carry on with her influencing social media posts.
Knowing TA, this scenario will probably be the other way round. 😅

      Delete
    8. Thanks for the timely reminder, Basia. It’s a useful summary and I think TA should hire you to write the daily synopses.Your reference to cheese and listeria had me wondering whether Tracy was pregnant too, until I checked her age (50) and realised it was unlikely. I was hugely relieved!

      Delete
    9. Like Miriam I also like the reality of having two pregnancies within a smallish community at the same time.
Surely it gives an opportunity and a forum for different women to share a major experience for a woman that growing a new human being is.
And if more younger people are beginning to listen some of them are likely to be in the position of creating new life.

      Delete
    10. A storyline about chosen childlessness, possibly involving Fallon,, would break new ground for TA. and provide the necessary balance. I could certainly relate to that. Even in this day and is difficult for people in general to accept that the instincts to have and not have children can be equally strong.

      Delete
    11. Talking of parallels, I'm liking the differences between Carol + Jill.
One living on her own, feisty + determined to stay in the home she's been so independent in for years, is it 2014 onwards?
Then there's the other, living in her family home along with her paramour, with everything done for her, even the baking of her well known cakes as to her recipes, is now done by Leonard.
Plus does Jill have adaptations to help her in Brookfield and would she accept a respite stay atThe Laurels...even if one was available at very short notice.
OK. I am being pedantic + I know it, but these are just my thoughts, for what they're worth.

    12. Perhaps describing Leonard as Jill's paramour was not quite the right description, but juet don't know how else to describe him - Lover, Partner or even Companion, just don't seem right to me..🤷‍♀️

    3. We had cameras for my Mum, including on the stairs.
Had they not been there, I would not have seen how ill she was and would not have called my brother to go round and check she was OK. And he, in turn, would not have been there to call the ambulance.

  32. I'm surprised Anna doesn't give up in exasperation. Perhaps after her near fall Carol will be sensible and wear the alarm. She will then probably be like my mum and frequently press it accidentally. In my case I only lived a mile away and could get there quickly, but Anna will have further to come unless relying on neighbours again. On one occasion both my brother and myself must have been uncontactable as the alarm didn't reach us, and two policeman came running through the farmhouse to find my mother sitting happily in a chair reading. She was most surprised and they were most relieved. It does show though that the alarm system works.

    1. I can’t remember what alarm system my mother had.
She was in a sheltered housing system in a London Borough with some sort of supervision but living independently. In the event she was there for less than two years before needing to take up residence in a nursing home for her own safety. However I was only five hundred yards away from her in my own home, and she remained , for the most part, able to use the telephone to call me for assistance.
My mother fell frequently, due to her neurological condition, and it was on the third consecutive Friday night in our very local A&E with her head being stitched up that the medics told me most severely that I could not continue in this way any longer, and within ten days she was safely installed in a safe nursing home.
We were very fortunate in that everything fell into place at the right time with a vacancy in the home I had already identified as the best place, again within walking distance of my home.

Despite my personal experience regarding this situation with Carol Tregorran, I am torn between the sensible choices available and my own very strong sense of independence, feeling very much in tandem with CT.

But then, to be fair, I have since the age of sixty, been attending strength and balance classes along with weekly fitness for aging classes in the community, and I would like TA to be featuring these activities in co operation with for instance AGE UK, as well as some local authorities.

    3. Why the harsh word for Adam, LadyR? Have I missed something? It was Alice who started the dementia thing.. Is it because Adam now knows Brian’s apparently odd behaviour was partly caused by his twists and turns trying to protect Ruairi from the blame for George’s bottling? And , as asked, hasn’t passed it on?

I think Brian’s autocratic and contradictory behaviour in relation to the farm and its management, plus his personal relationships,, goes beyond the Ruairi affair. Did Alice ever tell any of the partners he first offered the chance of management/inheritance to her, then ‘forgot’? I don’t think it’s necessarily the onset of dementia,, but I feel Adam is right to be concerned about the future of the farm in Brian’s hands

      Delete
    4. Yes Adam now knows the truth from R about Brian’s state of mind which is also why he has had to split from Miranda. Dementia is heartbreaking enough without misusing the fact to get your own way. Thank goodness he is not Brian’s Power of Attorney although he might try to persuade him to along the dignitas route next to save years of suffering dementia!

      Delete
    5. You mean Adam is trading on Alice’s suggestion that Brian has dementia to get the partners to agree he cannot continue? But what if Alice and Adam are on the right track and Brian’s behaviour is indeed due to cognitive or neurological deterioration, which would explain why he has not been handling the Ruairi crisis, the farm or his relationships sensibly? Coupled with his naturally autocratic approach, it spells disaster. His caravans initiative.,which has nothing to do with Ruairi is an indication.

Adam is absolutely right. It’s high time Brian ‘retired’.

As it stands he's in S. America and doesn't need this info at this time in hid life experience.

    3. Brad is far more astute than he's given credit for.
He won't let Den mess him around and he has Tracy, Chelsea + Jazzer to talk to. He's not alone, just prefers his own company which some do, and is quite capable of making his own decisions now.

  37. Didn't someone say that Anna had a brother? Carol could go and stay with him, BUT - I think Bert and Carol are getting closer to meeting - they're both cross with their respective families, we had mirror images of both, who in turn are exasperated by them. They could bat watch together!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The brother Richard has died, and this was what Carol was doing with the photos Anna got from the 2nd bedroom, putting them alltogether into an album.

    2. Well I think it was that!

    3. Thank you Miriam. To add I also like that they have both set out their boundaries.
They are in their mid/late 80s, so if Bert has eaten eggs and chips all his life, let him.
      Exercise in and outdoors yes.
I know a woman of a similar age who drinks and smokes, not to excess and told her daughter that now that she's old she'll do as she likes. Otherwise she's taken care of.

      Delete
    4. I totally agree. If Bert + Carol want pies, egg + chips, cake etc. then let them, as after all they've survived into their nineties, so why change the habits of a life-time now.
I so understand Anna wanting her Mum to be safe, but she's going about it in totally the wrong way.
I know this is wrong, but Anna is being portrayed as to wanting Carol's life to suit her.
The problem is that they're both too stubborn to meet in the middle.
To add - loved the camera in the loft to watch the bats. Brilliant 🦇

  38. Anna should get her a wildlife camera for the attic and bring the other one downstairs again. I think Carol is being incredibly selfish because it will be neighbours and Anna who have to pick up the pieces when she next trips over and maybe breaks her hip. Also she is being her own worst enemy because if she doesn't take care of herself she is destined for The Laurels a lot sooner than she would like. I cannot remember the Carol of years ago behaving so stupidly.

    2. Yes, but when she does, inevitably, have a fall or get ill, is she still going to be relishing her independence, or wishing to goodness she'd taken her daughter's advice and accepted Anna's measures to help support her?
Yes, she wants her independence. But at what cost to her family? And her neighbours?
I just listen to her and thank God that my Mum wasn't so intractable when we put cameras, carers, etc in place to allow her to continue living at home safely.

  40. I was rather dreading the partnership meeting because I thought it would be horribly shouty, but in the event I thought It has was very well done. And there was the unexpected bonus of Debbie’s presence. Just one little niggle - the likelihood of Lilian leaving The Stables to Alice was mentioned,, but I thought Shula owned the property and business...?
    .

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think Shula went into partnership with Justin to find the stables, Lillian was the incentive to make the deal more palatable, so not in Lillian's gift.

  44. I was just reading about the King’s visit to the sold out production of The Tempest At Stratford with Kenneth Branagh as Prospero, and remembering being in the audience at a previous production and experiencing the change in the quality of the silence when we reached Prospero’s farewell (Our revels now are ended). It sent shivers down the spine. Has anyone in TA ever been to nearby Stratford? Toby now lives there of course and could have become a convert to the theatre!

    1. Yes I went to Stratford way back in the seventies.
Saw Michael Pennington - lovely man and great Shakespearean who died this last week.
My father was a Shakespearean scholar and Shakespeare was drip fed to me as a child. I’m afraid it was not a positive experience for me and so as far as S is concerned, I step aside !

    1. MrNuts and I first went to Stratford to see Branagh as Hamlet back in 1993. We have visited quite a lot over the years, we saw Arthur Hughes as Richard III a few years back. We’re actually up there next week to see The Tempest and also The irresistible rise of Arturo Ui with Mark Gatiss. I hope the air conditioning in the car works alright otherwise it might be an uncomfortable drive.

  49. I wonder what Clive's motive is for taking Bert in. Will he be expecting him to contribute financially and where will that leave the rest of the Horrobins regarding rent money? Does anyone know who holds the tenancy for the house?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I thought it was Bert and Tracy jointly (Tracy's 'price' for moving in with Bert and looking after him).

      Delete
    2. The tenancy was a joint one between Bert + Tracy when she moved in. Whether that's still the same no idea.
I'm pretty sure though but not 100%, that the rent is paid by Tracy + Jazzer, with Brad + Chrlsea paying their way.

      Delete
    3. If, as I believe it is, it’s a local authority council house and the tenancy is joint, then, if Bert is not living there, Tracey will have to inform the local authority and renew the tenancy.

      Delete
    4. Is he having a holiday with Clive?

      Delete
    5. I have a feeling that the tenancy agreement has also been changed to Tracy and and probably Jazzer...which would make sense as to No#6 is now their marital home, along with the consideration of Bert's age.
When they married, Bert must have been well into his 80's.with only his pension.

  50. Hello everyone - I'm back! And there's so much to catch up with.
Been having an absolute nightmare with Google, & was locked out of my account. Something like 30 emails from them in a few days saying I had to prove I am me. Eventually had to wait 72 hours before trying to log in again ..and I couldn't even use Google search engine to look things up.
Was worried you'd think I'd left or died, but courtesy of Facebook I was able to send a message via dear Miriam to let you know what happened. Thank you Miriam! 😊

    1. Welcome back, Archerphile. How trying for you! I saw your message to Miriam on Facebook so didn’t worry unnecessarily, just crossed fingers for your speedy return. Are you Team Adam or Team Brian - or Team Another?

    3. Thank you Maryellen. I had forgotten you look at the FB blog too so thankfully knew what was happening.
As for which Team.......definitely not Team Brian. He has behaved appallingly to everyone and now just wants to throw his toys out of the pram.
Think I support Team Family.......made up of Adam and Kate so far, but not silly little Alice.

I thought the worst thing Brian did was declaring that Adam & Debbie were not his children. Interesting to think how all this will pan out

      Delete
    4. If I had to choose "teams", then I'm Team Kate/Alice.
Why? They are worried for their dad health-wise and were hoodwinked. This is that they both thought that the meeting was about persuading Brian to retire so he could relax and relieve the stress, leaving the business in safe hands, to protect their interest.
These two have been badly treated. My opinion only.

      Delete
    5. To add - at one time Kate + Alice legacy in Brian's will was nothing to do with the farm. They had their already gifted cottages, and would also receive a cash sum.
This is probably different now, as Brian changes his will as often as he has hot dinners.

  51. Balayage means sweeping. They also have another sophisticated technique in France called brushing (brooshing) ie styling. I always choose the cheapest option in my self-coiff salon: wash, cut and a hair dryer, there's a brush which I don't need.
