I agree Archerphile about the coffin business and there are schemes for ex offenders. George needs money to show Amber his love, because she doesn't appreciate his cooking skills, restaurants are better. They both live rent free, I don't think Amber contributes anything to the household expenses, and there's "pocket" money from Will.
Amber was very keen when George proposed in prison, she was looking at LL as the possible venue, there was a cancellation and Will was going to put down a deposit. It looks like the glamour has worn off - a boyfriend in jail how cool is that - unlike an ex offender.
And an ex-offender without a job, no money, nowhere of his own to live and no money to fund a swish wedding with all the trimmings. I have noticed a new name in the cast list for next week, so we might be going to find out a bit more about Little Miss Amber
I'm liking how Amber is changing as a character, alongside the new actor portraying her. I was convinced, obviously wrongly, that Amber would leave Ambridge after George's release. Who knows she still might! Now I actually want them to stay as a couple and in Ambridge How the tides are turning as to my previous thoughts.
Well my take on tonight’s episode is that Amber is perhaps the problem with her parents, rather than the parents being a problem with Amber. But we shall see !
I keep meaning to mention that I read very recently that Patrica Greene now lives in a care home and records her lines from there when required of her.
How wonderful that Patricia Greene is able at her age and living in a care home, to still be able to follow her professional life and continue to contribute to a lifelong position as Jill Archer.
I say ‘should have’ and ‘should’ve’ indiscriminately, just like I say ‘I’ve’ and ‘I have’. Or sometimes something somewhere in between. I’m afraid I wouldn’t meet Amber’s mother’s standards of gentility. Please advise!
As so many are predicting, will she be a caricature of either Hyacinth Bucket??My other thought is that she's very similar to Susan, which is why Amber still holds a grudge against her.
It crossed my mind that she might be an invalid - something to do with the way Bill said to Amber It’s been hard since you left, which seemed to imply more than his words.....
It seemed to me that Amber’s problem is with her mother, rather than her father. He seemed genuinely fond of her and concerned about her. It must be the mother who, endlessly critical, drove her away but how George is going to make up for that, I don’t know.
Perhaps he should start by looking at his own relationships with his Grandparents Susan + Neil along with others in the community. If he can try to build relationships between Amber + her family, then he can perhaps now see the way to help himself....
Kate is overbearing now, but she was also an absent mother. Phoebe was brought up by Hayley + Roy, then by Roy + lodger Kirsty. Why is Kate suddenly becoming the mother Pheobe never really had? Jenny was also a caring grandma to Pheobe.
I would also like to add the following. Roy was a constant loving father to Phoebe. Although the actor has sadly died, the character of Roy Tucker did not. He went to live in Eastern Europe with his new love. But he would not have abandoned all thought of his daughter, and I find it very odd that his interest in his daughter, her pregnancy - which will make him a grandfather - and her current welfare is never mentioned in any of the current storylines.
Roy would happily have abandoned Phoebe plus Hayley and daughter when he was in love with Elizabeth.. They’ll get over it, he said casually when Elizabeth asked him about his concern for his family It was she, not he, who broke it off, concerned for her own children. Then he crawled back to Hayley.
If anyone is a fan of Paul Copley(Leonard), as I have been for many years - he is starring alongside Sue Johnson in a play called “Big Winners” on Channel 5, Thursday, 9pm. Channel 5 are bringing back the old format of Play for Today which produced so many memorable plays. I shall enjoy *seeing* him act again after being a ‘voice’ in The Archers.
I’m binging on Downton, from the very beginning, as it’s being screened again. As I did not have a television I only ever saw the odd episode when visiting either daughters. So I’m enjoying seeing Paul Copley acting. Like you AP I’ve been a fan of his for ever.
There's so very many derogatory posts going around elsewhere about "Carry On Castle". I must be so different as I actually enjoy these silly/ridiculous interludes... To me it's just light-hearted and a fun listen, not to be taken seriously. 🤭
I’m sorry, Miriam. I don’t have a positive answer. All I can say is that I don’t remember her demise, but as my ears tend to switch off when she’s mentioned, that could be why!
I, despite my previous feelings, really enjoyed last night’s foray to Scotland. Well written, very amusing (though a bit predictable), multiple discomforts for Justin and the introduction of the lovely Mark Bonnar as the Scottish guide. Just hoping Helen doesn’t like him too much!
My take was that Helen liked the Scottish guide so much she was already halfway to moving to Scotland, Montbelias and all. Shouldn’t think Henry will be up for it however.
I thought the delay in travelling and the stable accommodation was ridiculous. Why were they setting off after midday when it was going to take 8 hours. Definitely Helen liked Finlay but again a silly storyline.
MrsP - exactly, Helen and Finlay running a sheep farm. Anrol - it just struck me, is Phoebe going to give birth at the stables, following on from last year's Christmas Carol?
All the talk of Blackpool, both in TA and Strictly, brings back memories of when our girls were little and we used to take them to see the Blackpool illuminations in October half-term. I wonder how much it has changed since then, I must dig out the photos.
I really enjoyed that episode esp. Justin + Jakob actually enjoying themselves without their partners as was Natasha without Tom. A bit of great escapism.
PS. Just to say I get the point that out of their everyday environment people are opening up and revealing their inner selves (I liked Natasha and Justin's chat) - it's the practical stuff that's so questionable.
It was nice too that Tom was able to talk to Kirsty about his dreams of Wren. A shared loss, that maybe he didn't have the space to reflect on when with Natasha and the twins.
Thank you Janice for that POV, because you’ve given me a different way of looking at what I heard, which confused me at first, then left me feeling that it was all rather odd with a touch of scraping the barrel. That then led me to think that perhaps Tom was wanting to reignite his relationship with Kirsty, although she was very quick to nip any such thoughts in the bud.
My alternative thought is, Tom was sharing his thoughts that his marriage to Natasha is not what he imagined. This is opposite to Natasha talking to Justin in Blackpool, when she intimated she has her perfect life. I do feel that Tom doesn't get a lot of say in things, both at the farm and at home.
I don’t think it’s a matter of just you thinking it Miriam, he doesn’t get much say in anything, either at the farm or from Natasha. Tom has always been treated like a clod hopper ( where did that expression come from ? ) and he has all too often lived up to being one. I think Natasha smelt him out pretty quickly and subconsciously knew she could manage and manipulate him to her hearts content. And she does, railroading her way through life.
I’m getting pretty unhappy about The Archers. I think I might be getting close to abandoning it, something I never would have contemplated, as it’s been there since I was ten years, or so, old, and I expected to die listening to it.
My feelings have come to a head this week as Ambridge has been utterly abandoned. The Archers is set in Ambridge and belongs there. I can obviously accept forays into Felpersham and so on, but completely abandoning the village and taking a group of ( mainly) villagers to Scotland is a step too far for me. This whole holiday paid by Peggy business has gone too far IMO. The introduction of Finley and the inclusion of Leonie - who doesn’t even live in Ambridge and is only related through marriage to Lilian’s son - who has only ever been a minor character, rarely heard in person, I find perplexing at best and bizarre as a concept. Why is Leonie included in the holiday party if her husband James is not. I’ve done my best to accept the very obvious changes in plots and story lines over recent years, accepting that the programme makers need to try to appeal to a younger audience, in order to keep TA alive, but after seventy odd years of feeling that Ambridge is part of my life I no longer feel any familiarity with the place. Im feeling very sad.
Maybe a break from TA would help. I had one during the Helen and Rob storyline when his treatment of Henry got too much for me. I didn't think I'd come back, but here I am.
MrsP - you could write to the Archers Podcast, this way it would be passed on, if you feel inclined, but don't waste daytime hours. I stopped listening for two years after Nigel's fall and came back to Helen and Rob. Recently I missed a week during the b&b nonsense, although it was in Ambridge.
I really liked the lightheartedness that Nigel brought to the programme, and liked the interaction between him and Elizabeth. I was cheesed off when they did that.
Oh no! Not ‘Peggy’ please! One of my most disliked names. My mother in law was a Margaret, known to all as Peggy. She’s been gone for years, but she really was one of the most unlikeable women I have ever known. Selfish, demanding, self-centred, inflexible, imperious and known to lead her whole family, including her poor put-upon husband and her son, my husband, a proper dance! Probably one of the reasons I never much liked Peggy Woolley either!
I never liked Peggy Archer much. I liked her even less once she became Peggy Woolley, however I have always liked the name. My dearest friend of over sixty years died this year. She was a Peggy, but not a Margaret. Liking or not a name is frequently linked to a particular person carrying that name.
My mother was always going to call a daughter Marion if she had a girl, but weeks before she left work to have me, a Marion came to work with her. My mother disliked her intently so I did not become Marion and as she didn’t have another name to hand, my name was suggested by a nurse.
That’s funny Mrs P. I am Marion but have never liked my name, have no second name I could use and no nickname. I should like to have been a Stella, but it wasn’t to be.
Margaret and Peggy aren't names that I particularly like. When choosing out girls names Mr CC was adamant that they didn't have the same initial like he and his brother did. It caused a lot of problems. I just wanted to be careful that their initials didn't spell anything embarrassing.
Before my first child was born, my Mum told me in no uncertain terms that I was not to have a Norma or a Norman (she's never been a fan of her name!). My response? 'Funnily enough, Mum, I wasn't planning to'!
We had a Granny come to our toddler group recently, another Norma. 'I don't think it's a name that's ever going to come back into fashion,' she told me!
However, we may have some Normas in here who absolutely love their name. If you do, that's great! Please don't be offended by my family's dislike
Afternoon tea at The Tower Ballroom for Tony and our Lil with a shout out to SCD show tomorrow! but surely it would be closed to the public today for rehearsals and if not would the general public not be dancing to The Tower Ballroom’s wonderful organ played still by Phil Kelsall? My how the years have flown my ex and I attended many cinema organ concerts and saw Phil many times right at the beginning of his career through to his Blackpool residency and yes the floor and the ballroom both exquisite. I only jigged about a bit as ex not interested. Lord George now he would have adored it having been a Latin and ballroom dancing enthusiast another interest of his as well as sportsman, sadly the legs no longer work now but he still has his certificates and plaques for both interests.
How lovely you make it sound Lady R. And does Lord George watch SCD, perhaps with a critical but knowledgable eye? My thoughts about that scene last night were that the BBC were doing another of their ‘trailers’ that are becoming so frequent these days, even during News programmes. An interesting week away, but I shall be glad to get back to. Ambridge to see what transpires from the events ‘oop north’
To me the trip was all about family dynamics + bonding. This was achieved by the two different venues which even Peggy W. couldn't have predicted. I loved hearing the different situations with the many different characters:- Justin + Natasha Jakob in an amusement arcade. Jakob + Alice with Phoebe Leonie with Helen/Tony. Then there was the opposite:- Riuari escaping as quickly as possible. Hazel arriving late. Kate being stroppy then being a grandmother so opposite to her as a mother. I loved it all How sad a person I must be 😵💫
Not at all Miriam surprisingly I found the overall lightheartedness / comedic situations a welcome distraction their everyday Ambridge lives for a one off week! Also a wonderfully compiled list of all events Miriam ⭐️ one question though 4 stables with bunk beds and how many people? and just suppose they had all made it to the venue!.
Apart from all the other shenanigans, I wondered why Hazel had been invited. She was not a member of the wider Archer family. She was Jack Woolleys daughter, and I seem to remember, adopted, at that, and never liked by any member of the family, least of all Peggy. I would be interested to hear any reasons why she was included in the holiday, even though she didn’t actually appear.
I presume that Peggy didn't define family in her will. I would have thought that the executor would have had a say but we never found out who that was. In the end it was all chaotic and the holiday booked by someone who wasn't a blood relative of Peggy and arranged without the agreement of several family members who were. Peggy left the money for the holiday but who is administering that? There are a lot of questions to which we'll never get an answer MrsP.
The executor is Peggy's accountant but he/she won't be bothered who actually went on the holiday or where they went.. All they'll want to do is pay up with a sigh of relief, that this part of her will has been done OK - cynical I know. Now what happens to any monies still in the pot,
Height Ho! Back to the relative sanity of Ambridge this evening. But it’s left me concerned about Brodie who I was looking forward to meeting. Was his failure to show up at the hospital due to (a) lack, of opportunity, (b) lack of interest, or (c) the BBC couldn’t afford him?
After all they paid for Finley, can’t afford two new characters at the same time. In one way, I think we might be grateful that we still have T A despite cuts in the budget. Phoebe is not a main character in Ambridge any longer so the occasional mention of Brady might suffice. On the other hand, even a hint of romance regarding Helen must surely justify a voice, even if only occasionally heard.
Don't shoot me, but after listening to this morning's omnibus, I enjoyed the holiday episodes even more due to hearing them continously and making even more sense, well to me. The one thing I really picked up on, which was in different weekly episodes, is how troubled Henry is with regards to his Uncle Tom and basically loathes him. There's trouble brewing esp. as Henry is not far off his 15th birthday not that this makes a difference.
I won’t shoot you Miriam ! I listened to the omnibus this morning. I’ve not listened for several years until today. I have to admit that I felt less hostile listening to the complete week in one session. Like you Miriam I too noted Henry in his attitude towards Tom, and we’ve heard similar before. I think that as Henry gets older he is likely to be more open about his hostility which already verges on rudeness. Have we ever heard Helen picking up on this aspect of Henry’s behaviour ? Or even Pat or Tony. Are the script writers seeding future dissent within the Bridge Farm family ?
I found it hard to believe that Leonard who has always been so considerate and loving of Gill would want an open relationship, or that Gill who has seemed jealous in the past would put up with that. I was believing it until the moment he said, and all the other women too, or something like that. I think it's a wind up, and that Gill will play along with it until they decide otherwise.
I’ve always thought of Leonard’s vocal style as ‘bleating’ so was startled by his change of tone last night. Like MrsP, I thought he was angry and making it up as he went along. No more than Ruth deserved. But what an implausible storyline! This is what happens when the scriptwriters are character-led and desperate to find a story for them or so it seems to me.
I am with CC on what she said about Helen moving out. When it was agreed she would stay there, it was meant to be temporary and she promised she'd have moved out by November! It's no wonder Henry is the way he is, as 7 living in a 4 bed house is far from ideal. However Helen paying rent must help Tom + Natasha with the mortgage Natasha arranged and basically they can't afford. There's trouble brewing...
Mentioning Henry. Hero his goat buck has been mentioned, but what about the kids? It must be about time for them to go to Vince's establishment so Henry can start the goat meat enterprise he envisaged
Hearing Tony talking about John last night, I wonder if grandson Johnny will ever return? I'd love this as he takes on John's legacy and to shake Tom + Natasha up.
Look at Brian + Riuari...Tony could be the same with Johnny. However it's highly unlikely he'll return either now or in the future. It was just wishful thinking on my part.
Thank goodness a post I tried to action at least a couple of times the other day did not do so! In it I said I cannot believe it is 50yrs since John died - WHAT 🤣🤣🤣 the conversation of course was regarding John ‘s 50th birthday anniversary oh dear talk about a senior moment! On the serious side I can understand that certain milestone birthdays bring heightened emotions of what might have been. Having lost a nephew in a road accident at the age of 22yrs in 1986 I’m sure my sister feels this way.
You were not alone in that senior moment Lady R - I too was caught short by that moment, realising of course pretty soon, that it was Johns 50th birthday being mentioned, not the 50th anniversary of his death. Was it the way it was presented to us I wonder ?
Well done Brad. He has a good nose for smelling something fishy. Will Ed AND George keep shtum about their interaction, since they both lied to keep up appearances ?
I can’t bear the way the pressure is piling on George and can well understand why Brad, who knows him better than anyone, is so gloomy and apprehensive. If George does anything silly (euphemism for commits suicide), I shall hold the whole village to blame, especially the Alice Protection Brigade.
On the day of his release from prison the female officer who was sympathetic to George had to keep him in check because he nearly turned on her when his civilian clothes were not there. I do remember when he was sincere in saying that he would like to give his Grundy grandparents a better life, but then there was, I've done my time, she owes me and broken glass. He's volatile and it will not end well. I just want him to go away, but it will not happen. As I said before, the allure of a prisoner boyfriend is not the same as of an ex-convict.
I don’t have any way of comparing the allure of a prisoner and an ex-prisoner. I can’t imagine anyone researching it so I suppose it comes under the heading of common knowledge. Is it recent - the effect of tv prison dramas maybe?
There is also the situation of him being inside and regulating himself with the objective of an early release. Now that he is on the outside again he has rejection from - as he sees it- all sides. He does have support from his family, but since that support has always been a constant in his life he takes that for granted. Amber saw a vibrant young man with a lot to live for, once ‘ outside’ but now that he is outside he appears to have nothing to live for and is an angry young man again, and it’s evident that he no longer feels the need to self regulate. If George continues down this path, without intervention from someone close to him, he will be in far more trouble than before he went to prison.
We were introduced to Amber when she verbally attacked Emma in the prison car park, but anything that's good for George goes. In spite of that I preferred the old Amber, full of spirit and plans. Now, recast, she's undergone a character change, all doom and gloom, though she still won't miss a nail appointment.
I'm certainly not joining in with who was at fault the most, Alice or George on that night and where the blame actually lied. All I'm prepared to say is that Alice did something about her problem, and now is accepted as a mother of Martha, holding down a full-time job. She got help when it was needed and is a far better person for it. Why can't George do similar?
I don't agree with class distinctions. It's just a person's attitude + how to get on, which George could easily do if he applied himself for once. On that note I need to 🤐
Alice has got a house because she’s got a monied father who indulges her, she has a job because she’s got a monied aunt who adores her, need I go on? All the application in the world won’t give George Alice’s advantages .

DeleteIt crossed my mind that she might be an invalid - something to do with the way Bill said to Amber It’s been hard since you left, which seemed to imply more than his words.....
DeleteIt seemed to me that Amber’s problem is with her mother, rather than her father. He seemed genuinely fond of her and concerned about her. It must be the mother who, endlessly critical, drove her away but how George is going to make up for that, I don’t know.
ReplyDeleteI thought Amber sounded a bit wistful when Bill mentioned her mother - could have been my imagination!
DeletePerhaps he should start by looking at his own relationships with his Grandparents Susan + Neil along with others in the community.
DeleteIf he can try to build relationships between Amber + her family, then he can perhaps now see the way to help himself....
Amber has an absent mother and Phoebe an overbearing one.
ReplyDeleteKate is overbearing now, but she was also an absent mother. Phoebe was brought up by Hayley + Roy, then by Roy + lodger Kirsty.
DeleteWhy is Kate suddenly becoming the mother Pheobe never really had?
Jenny was also a caring grandma to Pheobe.
I would also like to add the following.
DeleteRoy was a constant loving father to Phoebe.
DeleteIf anyone is a fan of Paul Copley(Leonard), as I have been for many years - he is starring alongside Sue Johnson in a play called “Big Winners” on Channel 5, Thursday, 9pm. Channel 5 are bringing back the old format of Play for Today which produced so many memorable plays. I shall enjoy *seeing* him act again after being a ‘voice’ in The Archers.
ReplyDeleteI’m binging on Downton, from the very beginning, as it’s being screened again. As I did not have a television I only ever saw the odd episode when visiting either daughters. So I’m enjoying seeing Paul Copley acting.
DeleteLike you AP I’ve been a fan of his for ever.
There's so very many derogatory posts going around elsewhere about "Carry On Castle". I must be so different as I actually enjoy these silly/ridiculous interludes...
ReplyDeleteTo me it's just light-hearted and a fun listen, not to be taken seriously. 🤭
Maryellen.
ReplyDeleteWith your super Archers knowledge - is Hilda the cat still alive?
I’m sorry, Miriam. I don’t have a positive answer. All I can say is that I don’t remember her demise, but as my ears tend to switch off when she’s mentioned, that could be why!
DeleteI know she went to the funeral + wake in The Bull, but I thought for some reason, she met her end soon after..No-one seems to know either..
DeleteI, despite my previous feelings, really enjoyed last night’s foray to Scotland. Well written, very amusing (though a bit predictable), multiple discomforts for Justin and the introduction of the lovely Mark Bonnar as the Scottish guide. Just hoping Helen doesn’t like him too much!
ReplyDeleteMy take was that Helen liked the Scottish guide so much she was already halfway to moving to Scotland, Montbelias and all.
DeleteShouldn’t think Henry will be up for it however.
I thought the delay in travelling and the stable accommodation was ridiculous. Why were they setting off after midday when it was going to take 8 hours. Definitely Helen liked Finlay but again a silly storyline.
ReplyDeleteMrsP - exactly, Helen and Finlay running a sheep farm.
ReplyDeleteAnrol - it just struck me, is Phoebe going to give birth at the stables, following on from last year's Christmas Carol?
Ooh that’s a smart thought BASIA.
DeleteA baby in a stable …..
Clever writers ! But a little too easy ?
Or it could be Blackpool? And there's Jakob and Alice from the stables and Kate's nose put out joint.
DeleteAll the talk of Blackpool, both in TA and Strictly, brings back memories of when our girls were little and we used to take them to see the Blackpool illuminations in October half-term. I wonder how much it has changed since then, I must dig out the photos.
ReplyDeleteAt least they took the Ambridge weather with them..😃
DeleteI really enjoyed that episode esp. Justin + Jakob actually enjoying themselves without their partners as was Natasha without Tom.
ReplyDeleteA bit of great escapism.
Exactly Miriam and just right for me throughly enjoying the lightheartedness of it all!
ReplyDeleteNothing about the Scottish trip is making much sense, so I'm letting it wash over me!
ReplyDeletePS. Just to say I get the point that out of their everyday environment people are opening up and revealing their inner selves (I liked Natasha and Justin's chat) - it's the practical stuff that's so questionable.
DeleteIt was nice too that Tom was able to talk to Kirsty about his dreams of Wren. A shared loss, that maybe he didn't have the space to reflect on when with Natasha and the twins.
ReplyDeleteThank you Janice for that POV, because you’ve given me a different way of looking at what I heard, which confused me at first, then left me feeling that it was all rather odd with a touch of scraping the barrel.
DeleteThat then led me to think that perhaps Tom was wanting to reignite his relationship with Kirsty, although she was very quick to nip any such thoughts in the bud.
I felt just like you MrsP and as you say it's good to have an alternative view point.
DeleteMy alternative thought is, Tom was sharing his thoughts that his marriage to Natasha is not what he imagined.
DeleteThis is opposite to Natasha talking to Justin in Blackpool, when she intimated she has her perfect life.
I do feel that Tom doesn't get a lot of say in things, both at the farm and at home.
I don’t think it’s a matter of just you thinking it Miriam, he doesn’t get much say in anything, either at the farm or from Natasha.
DeleteTom has always been treated like a clod hopper ( where did that expression come from ? ) and he has all too often lived up to being one. I think Natasha smelt him out pretty quickly and subconsciously knew she could manage and manipulate him to her hearts content. And she does, railroading her way through life.
I’m getting pretty unhappy about The Archers.
ReplyDeleteI think I might be getting close to abandoning it, something I never would have contemplated, as it’s been there since I was ten years, or so, old, and I expected to die listening to it.
DeleteSame here CC.
DeleteThanks for the suggestion CC and J - but I can’t contemplate that at the moment.
DeleteWill think about it tho’.
MrsP - you could write to the Archers Podcast, this way it would be passed on, if you feel inclined, but don't waste daytime hours.
DeleteI stopped listening for two years after Nigel's fall and came back to Helen and Rob.
Recently I missed a week during the b&b nonsense, although it was in Ambridge.
I really liked the lightheartedness that Nigel brought to the programme, and liked the interaction between him and Elizabeth. I was cheesed off when they did that.
Delete✔️✔️✔️
DeleteOh no! Not ‘Peggy’ please! One of my most disliked names.
ReplyDeleteMy mother in law was a Margaret, known to all as Peggy.
I was surprised that Phoebe was prepared to change the name if Kate didn't like it, even though she finds Kate overbearing.
DeleteI never liked Peggy Archer much. I liked her even less once she became Peggy Woolley, however I have always liked the name.
ReplyDeleteMy dearest friend of over sixty years died this year.
DeleteMargaret and Peggy aren't names that I particularly like. When choosing out girls names Mr CC was adamant that they didn't have the same initial like he and his brother did. It caused a lot of problems. I just wanted to be careful that their initials didn't spell anything embarrassing.
ReplyDeleteBefore my first child was born, my Mum told me in no uncertain terms that I was not to have a Norma or a Norman (she's never been a fan of her name!).
ReplyDeleteMy response? 'Funnily enough, Mum, I wasn't planning to'!
We had a Granny come to our toddler group recently, another Norma. 'I don't think it's a name that's ever going to come back into fashion,' she told me!
However, we may have some Normas in here who absolutely love their name. If you do, that's great! Please don't be offended by my family's dislike
The only Norma I have been aware of is poor Norma Major, replaced for a while by the hated (by chicken farmers) Edwina Curry!
DeleteAfternoon tea at The Tower Ballroom for Tony and our Lil with a shout out to SCD show tomorrow! but surely it would be closed to the public today for rehearsals and if not would the general public not be dancing to The Tower Ballroom’s wonderful organ played still by Phil Kelsall? My how the years have flown my ex and I attended many cinema organ concerts and saw Phil many times right at the beginning of his career through to his Blackpool residency and yes the floor and the ballroom both exquisite. I only jigged about a bit as ex not interested. Lord George now he would have adored it having been a Latin and ballroom dancing enthusiast another interest of his as well as sportsman, sadly the legs no longer work now but he still has his certificates and plaques for both interests.
ReplyDeleteHow lovely you make it sound Lady R. And does Lord George watch SCD, perhaps with a critical but knowledgable eye?
DeleteMy thoughts about that scene last night were that the BBC were doing another of their ‘trailers’ that are becoming so frequent these days, even during News programmes.
An interesting week away, but I shall be glad to get back to. Ambridge to see what transpires from the events ‘oop north’
Yes Archerfile, maybe we'll find out what the point of having this trip was.
DeleteTo me the trip was all about family dynamics + bonding. This was achieved by the two different venues which even Peggy W. couldn't have predicted.
DeleteI loved hearing the different situations with the many different characters:-
Justin + Natasha
Jakob in an amusement arcade.
Jakob + Alice with Phoebe
Leonie with Helen/Tony.
Then there was the opposite:-
Riuari escaping as quickly as possible.
Hazel arriving late.
Kate being stroppy then being a grandmother so opposite to her as a mother.
I loved it all
How sad a person I must be 😵💫
Not at all Miriam surprisingly I found the overall lightheartedness / comedic situations a welcome distraction their everyday Ambridge lives for a one off week!
DeleteAlso a wonderfully compiled list of all events Miriam ⭐️ one question though 4 stables with bunk beds and how many people? and just suppose they had all made it to the venue!.
Archerphile I left the tv on bbc one when I left so if not dozing Lord G would see SCD I used to enjoy
ReplyDeletehim having a view here and there!
Apart from all the other shenanigans, I wondered why Hazel had been invited. She was not a member of the wider Archer family. She was Jack Woolleys daughter, and I seem to remember, adopted, at that, and never liked by any member of the family, least of all Peggy.
ReplyDeleteI would be interested to hear any reasons why she was included in the holiday, even though she didn’t actually appear.
I presume that Peggy didn't define family in her will. I would have thought that the executor would have had a say but we never found out who that was. In the end it was all chaotic and the holiday booked by someone who wasn't a blood relative of Peggy and arranged without the agreement of several family members who were.
DeletePeggy left the money for the holiday but who is administering that? There are a lot of questions to which we'll never get an answer MrsP.
The executor is Peggy's accountant but he/she won't be bothered who actually went on the holiday or where they went.. All they'll want to do is pay up with a sigh of relief, that this part of her will has been done
DeleteOK - cynical I know.
Now what happens to any monies still in the pot,
At least we learnt from this weeks podcast that the dreaded Hilda is still with us 🐈⬛ 🤭
ReplyDeleteI was so convinced she was no more..🙀😿
DeleteHeight Ho! Back to the relative sanity of Ambridge this evening. But it’s left me concerned about Brodie who I was looking forward to meeting. Was his failure to show up at the hospital due to (a) lack, of opportunity, (b) lack of interest, or (c) the BBC couldn’t afford him?
ReplyDeleteC
ReplyDeleteQuite definitely C Maryellen
After all they paid for Finley, can’t afford two new characters at the same time.
In one way, I think we might be grateful that we still have T A despite cuts in the budget.
Phoebe is not a main character in Ambridge any longer so the occasional mention of Brady might suffice. On the other hand, even a hint of romance regarding Helen must surely justify a voice, even if only occasionally heard.
Don't shoot me, but after listening to this morning's omnibus, I enjoyed the holiday episodes even more due to hearing them continously and making even more sense, well to me.
ReplyDeleteThe one thing I really picked up on, which was in different weekly episodes, is how troubled Henry is with regards to his Uncle Tom and basically loathes him.
There's trouble brewing esp. as Henry is not far off his 15th birthday not that this makes a difference.
I won’t shoot you Miriam !
ReplyDeleteI listened to the omnibus this morning.
Helen doesn't seem to be making any effort to find her own place., it would benefit them all if she did.
ReplyDeleteAnd what’s up with Amber? She sounded quite hostile tonight.
ReplyDeleteUmm i agree AP
DeleteAmber is hiding something.
DeleteAnd George knows it.
I think whatever’s bugging her is not to do with her parents but her influencer job.
DeleteSo, are Leonard and Jill really in an open relationship or is Leonard just winding Ruth up as payback for her nosiness?
ReplyDeleteI hope so Ruth deserves it 🙃
DeleteLeonard’s tone of voice was so very very different when giving that explanation to Ruth.
DeleteEither winding her up, as you suggest, or very angry.
DeleteI’ve always thought of Leonard’s vocal style as ‘bleating’ so was startled by his change of tone last night. Like MrsP, I thought he was angry and making it up as he went along. No more than Ruth deserved. But what an implausible storyline! This is what happens when the scriptwriters are character-led and desperate to find a story for them or so it seems to me.
DeleteRuth overheard Leonard saying: it will be our little secret - so something's going on, but polyamory?!
ReplyDeleteHe could have been making an anonymous donation to charity?
ReplyDeleteI am with CC on what she said about Helen moving out.
ReplyDeleteWhen it was agreed she would stay there, it was meant to be temporary and she promised she'd have moved out by November!
ReplyDeleteIs Leonard planning a surprise for Ruth + David, as a thanks to them for including him as a Brookfield family member?
ReplyDeleteNow that I would love.
I should have listened to tonight's episode before posting this. 😵💫 🫣
DeleteHearing Tony talking about John last night, I wonder if grandson Johnny will ever return?
ReplyDeleteI'd love this as he takes on John's legacy and to shake Tom + Natasha up.
I don’t think Johnny would have the gumption to try and usurp Tom.
DeleteLook at Brian + Riuari...Tony could be the same with Johnny.
DeleteHowever it's highly unlikely he'll return either now or in the future.
It was just wishful thinking on my part.
I wonder if his hair grew back. That’s the last thing I remember about him, apart from him going off to the wide blue yonder!
DeleteThank goodness a post I tried to action at least a couple of times the other day did not do so!
ReplyDeleteIn it I said I cannot believe it is 50yrs since John died - WHAT 🤣🤣🤣 the conversation of course was regarding John ‘s 50th birthday anniversary oh dear talk about a senior moment!
DeleteWas it the way it was presented to us I wonder ?
Well I feel a lot better about my moment now Mrs P 😊
Delete👍
DeleteI thought the same, so you're not alone..😆
DeleteHmmm !
DeleteThree of us at least got the wrong angle.
Suggests to me that it was the way it was presented.
Well done Brad.
ReplyDeleteHe has a good nose for smelling something fishy.
Will Ed AND George keep shtum about their interaction, since they both lied to keep up appearances ?
Emma will know as well and hopefully confront George.
DeleteI had high hopes of a much improved George but they were rather dashed this evening when I realised how explosive his temper was.
ReplyDeleteNow going to listen to " Poison Water" on bbc iplayer because it was about our area.
DeleteI can’t bear the way the pressure is piling on George and can well understand why Brad, who knows him better than anyone, is so gloomy and apprehensive. If George does anything silly (euphemism for commits suicide), I shall hold the whole village to blame, especially the Alice Protection Brigade.
DeleteOn the day of his release from prison the female officer who was sympathetic to George had to keep him in check because he nearly turned on her when his civilian clothes were not there.
ReplyDeleteI don’t have any way of comparing the allure of a prisoner and an ex-prisoner. I can’t imagine anyone researching it so I suppose it comes under the heading of common knowledge. Is it recent - the effect of tv prison dramas maybe?
DeleteThere is also the situation of him being inside and regulating himself with the objective of an early release.
DeleteNow that he is on the outside again he has rejection from - as he sees it- all sides.
If George continues down this path, without intervention from someone close to him, he will be in far more trouble than before he went to prison.
..and if he's not careful, he'll fing himself back in jail, serving the rest of his sentence.
DeleteWhat happened last night was an assault, but Ed and George decided on a complicit cover up with Brad as unwilling participant, though not a witness.
DeleteWe were introduced to Amber when she verbally attacked Emma in the prison car park, but anything that's good for George goes. In spite of that I preferred the old Amber, full of spirit and plans. Now, recast, she's undergone a character change, all doom and gloom, though she still won't miss a nail appointment.
ReplyDeleteI'm certainly not joining in with who was at fault the most, Alice or George on that night and where the blame actually lied.
ReplyDeleteAll I'm prepared to say is that Alice did something about her problem, and now is accepted as a mother of Martha, holding down a full-time job. She got help when it was needed and is a far better person for it.
Why can't George do similar?
Is it a question of class ?
DeleteI don't agree with class distinctions. It's just a person's attitude + how to get on, which George could easily do if he applied himself for once.
DeleteOn that note I need to 🤐
Alice has got a house because she’s got a monied father who indulges her, she has a job because she’s got a monied aunt who adores her, need I go on? All the application in the world won’t give George Alice’s advantages .
DeleteI wish that Brad had gone away to university and escaped all the grief that being friends with George brings him.
ReplyDeleteIt does bring him grief, I agree, but it is also enabling him to develop wisdom and diplomacy.
DeleteThere is always a silver lining.
