    Re - joining this blog

I joined at the point ( I think) that Lady R and Lancashire Janet were having a jovial ding dong about LadyR being a titled Lady. ARCHERPHILE was joining in. Dublin Dolly always had a lot to say.

If anyone can remember that time, then please feel free to give me a nudge.

I can remember 😱 I was appalled that LanJan thought I was a real Lady 🤣😂 and I explained at the time how I came to use it. Now of course AP can confirm my protestations as we met (all be it briefly) a few years ago at a National Trust property.

But LADY R …… can you remember what year that was ?

I was trying earlier today SOZ to remember FoSo- father of son of - his name.
I remember him very well, and that he lived in Bromley.
Can’t remember what happened or why he left.

  5. So ANROL - you’ve been with us all these years but have only posted recently ?
How nice that you have finally chosen to join in. You must know us all very well.

Bright sunshine here but no snow.
Though I’ve seen pictures of it up on Dunkery Beacon over the NY period.

LADY R - I moved out of my flat in Putney in September 2014, stayed with my daughter through till the beginning of 2015 then moved to Stroud.
I’m pretty sure this was the period that I started posting, but am unsure of exactly when, if still in London or after I had moved. My diaries of that period are still in a box somewhere.

    1. I had the clever idea of looking at the old BBC blogs. You used to be able to click on your name and see all your comments. But they're in the process of digitising all the old blogs and currently a lot of the comments are unavailable (they're due to return, apparently). So I couldn't find when I started. A short time down the rabbit hole hunting for restored blogs but then I realised I probably ought to get on with all the jobs that actually needed doing!

  6. I am in the middle of tidying out what I call ‘my room” .
Mr LJ was really tidy and I am not.
When I first came down( it would have been our silver wedding Anniverary today) he said that the spare bedroom could be mine and he would not go into it unless invited.
I may find something in there .
I have all my old diaries.
When I have time I will check to see if I can find out when I joined.
I didn’t get an IPad until I think 2012 so it must have been after that.
I know ,Mrs P that at one point we thought we could meet up in Putney .
I particularly like the Wetherspoon’s overlooking the Thames by the bridge at ge bottom of the high street.
I used to go quite often to Putney which I really liked

    1. Yes I remember LJ our plan to meet up at Weatherspoons on the embankment at Putney. But I’m pretty sure that was after I had left London, but still had the facility to stay at my daughters in Earlsfield.

MrsP was interpreted as something to do with the licence fee.
      Several times.

I then tried with ARCHERPHILE - and got through to February 2016.
I could not find any posts from me, but did find references from others about posts from MrsP - several about a new chip shop opening.
I then scrolled back and found posts that I had no memory of writing, but were obviously the posts referred to by others.
No MrsP but a number - D1741254663795 - perhaps I did not give myself a name at that point ?
But then I must have done, since others referred to me as MrsP !
If anyone gets a look at posts prior to February 2016 with MrsP or the number above showing that I was contributing then, please do let me know.

I had wonderful service in S/bury's today. I picked up 3 bottles of low alcohol rose, on offer but realised that the full price was showing on my scanner. On going to pay, there was the trainee manager overseeing things, who I had help from before. I called him over - long story short - he got the ticket from the shelf, changed the price and I was happy. On getting home + looking at my receipt, he'd actually also cancelled one bottle, so I have a free bottle as I only actually paid for two at the reduced price.
    What a lovely gesture.

    3. Thanks both. It was a wild night, but no trees, except for the odd branch, are down here and the large shed roof is still intact - always a worry in high winds as if one roofing sheet goes it tends to take others with it. I was surprised none of the trees were down, but it may have been because of the wind direction, coming from the northwest instead of the usual southwesterly. Some things blown around the garden and the door hanging off my son's old workshed but he will easily fix that.

Here in Minehead we were clearly in between the two surges and appear to be untouched by the storm. Light rain through the night and it seems damp outside, (yet more wet paw marks on my sheets courtesy of Puss) but it’s brightening up now and the sun seems to want to push through the overcast sky.
My daughter down on the Lizard is safe apart from lack of power and a tree down across the estate drive, but the farm tractor will soon deal with that I imagine.

  20. I woke up to some great news this morning.
A couple of months or so ago, my niece in OZ went into work to find she no had a job. The firm were closing down with immediate effect and there would be no redundancy. She and hubbie had already booked + paid for (luckily) a trip to Tonga to meet up with friends. It is through this couple that they met and cupid struck!!
Finances became a problem as to the mortgage, as she was the main earner.
As such, she managed to get a temporary Christmas job in a shop and was doing Uber driving to try + make ends meet.
They left on their trip yesterday, and just as they were about to leave she got the date for her postponed total thyroidectomy. This is in a completely different hospital, which is a much larger and a university one, but much further away.
They stopped in Fiji overnight, sounds glam but was the best + cheapest way to do their journey. On switching her 'phone back on, there was an e-mail offering her a job, one which she really wanted.
As said, it was such wonderful news to wake up to. No matter how far away they are, they are family still matter so much.

Daughter still without any power, heat, light or hot water, probably for another two days, and no phone signal without internet of course. Their property is very remote.
She called me from the farm ( where the horse has been recovering since leaving hospital) when she got there this morning.
Two days ago the vet signed Spuddy off, commenting that in all her career she had never seen a horse be so well looked after during recovery as she had witnessed him.
I am very proud of my daughter. Even as a small child, if she decided to do something she did it 100% without fail. She will always be dedicated and focussed. Another person pointed out that it had been a team effort, which it has been, but the vet said, yes, but she as an individual has given such personal attention in all ways to that animal and he has responded and that has pulled him through.
I am sad though, that it has taken her until almost sixty to finally realise her dream.
It is hard for me to see and understand that if I had made different decisions at the end of my marriage, her life could have been very different.
But I also understand that as we enter those last years of our lives we
look back and review how we might have acted differently.
And that’s where I am, now.

      Delete
    2. We do look back and think about how we would have done things differently.

      Delete
    3. One of my older cousins once said to me when we were discussing the past that her maxim was:
" never regret a decision you have made".
She thought that in hindsight you can wish you had made a different decision but that at the time it was the right decision for you , so never look back and regret past decisions. Difficult not to though.

      Delete
    4. I believe this too Janice, and I know that at the time I made the right decision. It’s the unintended consequences that trip one up tho’ as well as the unknown future developments that then make the decision that has been made, not the best after all.

What I ought to do, is turn these fantasy ‘what if I had done that instead’ thoughts into short stories.

      Delete
    5. I would be having constant nightmares if I thought of the consequences if I had made different decisions in the past. I can’t change the past but maybe I can still affect the future. One of my faults is that I am the world’s best procrastinator so to make a decision is an achievement in itself.
Your idea of using your alternative decisions in short stories is an interesting one but, remember it would be just fantasy.

I’m still making my way through the 75th anniversary programmes.
I’ve come across something today that no one else has mentioned which I am thrilled by.
It has irritated me over recent years that unlike many programmes, it’s only possible to re listen to TA for one month post broadcast.
Now apparently it is going to be possible to listen to previous broadcasts for FIVE years after broadcast.
I do wonder what has brought this decision about, but for whatever reason, I am pleased.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Just realised how much news and chat I am missing! I’ve been so busy with other things I have not logged in for several days. Keep more in touch with the Archers blog.
So annoyed I missed the Archers Bargain Hunt - I heard on the podcast that there was to be one, but didn’t know when. Suppose I’ll have to try the dreaded BBC iPlayer, which I can never navigate very well, to catch up.
We were very lucky with the big storm. High winds but no damage apart from the usual deep flood outside the house. This time there was a crash between 2 cars, both on wrong side of road, trying to avoid the water.
Perhaps Highways will actually do something about it now. After my last letter with video of the problem, they said they wouldn’t do anything because ‘there is no danger to life’! Sounds unkind, but a crash is just what we needed to get action!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I do agree about iPlayer Archerfile, it doesn't load quickly in spite of us having good Internet speed and navigation is poor. BBC Sounds isn't much more user friendly. One would have thought that the BBC could do better.

  29. Mrs P - I have been trying to find really old blogs to work out when you joined. All I have come up with is a list of all the blogs since Ruthy set these up for us with Google when the BBC’s closed down.
The first mention of you is as “MrsP - crone of Ambridge”. It is on April 28th, 2018 at 5:07 pm.

I cannot remember if you were posting before that, but I can find no reference to myself as K2tog which was my first blogging name on the old BBC blogs. Or indeed any copies of the old blogs. I found what I thought was a list of BBC blogs but they turned out to be the ones the BBC did themselves. Like when Paul Copley joined the cast & they published a piece about him.

Some of the other bloggers back then were Seasider, bootgums, HG, Hedgehog at Hollowtree, Carolyn (much missed by me), Pierre les Corbeaux (stone the crows!), Sleepy Lawer, and Burnham Beeches. I wonder where they are all now, and if they still read us from time to time?

I normally look in of an evening as well as earlier in the day - once I’m up ! - but last night went to see HAMNET. It really is wonderful and deserves all the applause it’s getting.
And I walked, very slowly, both to and from the cinema.
My walking now is very slow and laboured and I feel that my ability is diminishing each day. Have a doctors appointment next week and three physio appointments this week. I’m really struggling to get Lady walked each day, and to cap it all, my car failed its MOT yesterday.

To get back to the blog.
Thank you all for trying to answer my question, which in the larger scheme of things really isn’t that important.
When I first started posting you ARCHERPHILE were K2tog, and FoSo, Bootgums, Pierre LC and others suggested were blogging, as well as that man that was always talking with Dublin Dolly too.
Incidentally, Bootgums, Seasider and Caroline were all at the Waterloo meet up along with others.

I think when it comes down to it, I was possibly reading when still in London but didn’t start contributing until 2015 or 16, after moving to Stroud.
Still a good ten years though !

  35. Mrs P I do hope those physio sessions are useful. There are all sorts of reasons why your walking is slower at the moment. Probably it would be dangerous to go at your usual speed in wintry conditions. If I use my crutch I have to be very careful where I place the end as it slides easily. I often feel safer hobbling along without an aid.

I read Hamnet a year ago and thought it one of the best books I had ever read. I’ve always liked Maggie O’farrell’s books but that one was exceptional. I’ll definitely go and see it.

Thankfully she was able to complete her lovely book which I shall cherish. As with Ev she will never be forgotten here on our blog 🕯️ ❤️

  48. Thank you for finding out Maryellen. Poor Sarnia. I feel it was such s pity she didn't have a longer time after her husband died to be able to do things her way and be herself. 🙏

  49. Sarnia - Thank you for making me smile, sometimes laugh, with your dry sense of humour and wit. I am so pleased that you created your garden and could enjoy it albeit briefly. How many people spend their last months being so creative - you live on in your poetry.

  50. I too am sorry that Sarnia did not have long to enjoy her carefully planned garden but she must have had the thrill of publishing her poems.

  51. I love crime dramas and crime novels. I have been reading a great series by Dana Stabenow about Kate Shugak a PI living in a National Park in Alaska. I would certainly recommend the series. I have learnt a lot about living in the wilderness of Alaska and its people. The crimes and the solving of them are good and well thought out.
Currently I download my books for free on the free library app BorrowBox. I also use the Libby app to read all magazines free including Radio Times Good Housekeeping and Vogue. You only have to input your library card number at the outset.

  52. I was shocked but not surprised to hear about Sarnia. I am glad that she does not have to suffer any longer. And I wish her ‘long life’ ( a Jewish blessing for her relatives) and years of flying in the skies with the aeroplanes she loved so much

    2. Thank you Maryellen for calling the care home.
I am very sad that Sarnia’s son was unable to let one of us know, particularly since several of us have been in touch since she has been in the Nursing Home.
I was personally in fairly frequent contact with Sarnia by phone and email for the last five years or so from when we met up one New Year when she visited her relatives who lived close by to me.
Sarnia became free to be her own person after the death of her husband and along with others I shared her enthusiasm for regaining her sense of self and becoming able to order her home, her garden and her life as she wanted to do, and to allow her talents to shine without the negative criticism of her life before David died.

I have been thinking of late that it would be a lovely commemoration of her life if she were to be included in the obituary programme on R4 - Last Word, however without input from close friends and family I doubt that would be possible.
And so I think that her best legacy is the poetry and drawings that she published and bought by a number of her friends on this blog and the memory of Rosemary that remains with many of us.

May you shine in the poems that you left Rosemary as you shone each week in the music that you played in Church.

  55. Well, that’s a hour and a quarter of my life I’ll never get back ! Watching Trump’s speech at Davos.
The man is totally deluded and narcissistic beyond belief ! His claims are ridiculous and worrying. How such a flawed character became a major leader in the modern world I cannot understand and I just hope I am still here to see a more reasonable leader of the USA. 😵‍💫

  56. I too sat and watched his complete ‘ speech ‘ !

My feelings are much as ARCHERPHILE has expressed.
About a third of the way through I began to feel that I wanted all those in his audience to stand as one and in unison cry ‘ enough, shut up ‘.
If he can be so utterly in defiance of what has been perceived as diplomacy for centuries, then perhaps he should be given some of his own medicine.

  57. My last email from Rosemary/Sarnia on 23 October just after she began to get worse simply said God Bless x x.
I don’t know if someone else typed it for her. But I’m sure she would have encompassed us all in her thoughts.
She said earlier that her son Daniel had jokingly suggested they could print and sell her lat points at her funeral which they both found hilarious!

  58. Thanks for letting us know that Maryellen- but could you review your final sentence, please. I’m puzzled as to what ‘ lat points ‘ could mean ?

    1. I thought something to do with aeroplanes but have just read Maryellen's correction, so not latitude points!

  59. For context, my last email from Rosemary was on the 10 th of October, when she was waning, but still able and willing to write.
The previous emails had been talking about how at her end she was living the life of Riley.
God Bless You Rosemary from SARNIA

    1. I thought maybe ‘lat points’ must refer to latitude places in the sky which may help with navigation up there!!!! I think Sarnia would have laughed at my interpretation.

  62. Help! Sorry to change the mood but can anyone tell me how to get black permanent marker (Pentel) ink off of my hands, a shelf, china and other things the pen exploded over?
It has set on my hands like plastic paint & anything I inadvertently touch gets coated too.
I’ve tried, soap, washing up liquid, sticky stuff remover, meths, petrol & a hard scrub with a scouring pad…and it’s still there. Talk about permanent - looks like it really is!

We have started watching the Irish one now on iPlayer. 2 episodes there at the mo.
Siobhan mcsweeny hosting. She’s obviously watched Alan Cumming on the American version and is channelling his hosting style. Good so far. Just can’t understand some of the accents!! Might have to try subtitles on the next episode.

Watched Ben Hur tonight. Oh I love these old films. They seem much better than new computer aided films. You had real stars then. Good old Charleston Heston. 😊

  64. I wonder who dresses Siobhan McSweeney, I think she looks amazing. I loved the Traitors, wanted Jade and Jack to win, but the other two were deserving of it. I'm watching the Irish version now too, like the spoken Irish language in it.
The actor who plays Jakob was in a very sweet radio play, available on sounds, called something like The Wedding Suit, written by his wife, which I enjoyed last week.

  65. I loved “The Traitors” and was so glad Stephen did not crack and break his promise that would have spoilt the end game for me as Rachel stayed unwaveringly true to her word and wanted to win at least half of the prize money to help make special memories with her mum, who obviously has dementia and for her 2 children also 🥰
I cannot watch other versions as no Claudia. Watched the Channel 5 documentary “Beyond the fringe” last night. They did not mention “The Sewing Bee” which I feel sure she hosted (?)as yet another show featuring her as host of a subject that she has no talent whatsoever for herself 🤣 yet it always works…..on those grounds I could put myself forward 🤭

  66. Lady R you’re right about Claudia and The Sewing Bee. She presented the first 4 series. I can’t sew but I love watching other people who can!
For Janice in particular, I was watching a Simon and Garfunkel concert from 2003 last night and saw a theremin being played in The Boxer. Without Janice’s input on the instrument I wouldn’t have known what it was . Just shows that you never stop learning on the Archers Blog!!

  67. I watched The Traitors purely because it seemed the programme to watch, so I was interested to see what the hype was all about.
It was watchable but it annoyed me at the same time.
If it hadn't been for Claudia I might have stopped watching. However Stephen + Rachel played a good game + deserved their win.
I would love a version with a twist, in that the viewers don't know who the Traitors are either. This could easily be done with The Traitors wearing cloaks + masks, along with having disguised voices, when in the turret.
    Now that I would enjoy.

  68. On a completely different topic, I've been seeing some amazing photos from my OZ niece still on their holiday in Tonga. As I've already said, they have friends there who have eco lodges plus a 90ft catamaran.
Yesterday niece + hubbie plus boys, kayaked over a small stretch of sea from the island they're staying on (in one of the lodges with private beach) to the main island to go to the local food market. A bit different to nipping out to the shops!
They + friends went out on a 5 day cruise on the catamaran, to some of the outlying islands. Talk about small deserted islands with white untouched sands and clear turquoise waters. They didn't see any other people nor boats the entire time they were there. All they did was snorkel and scuba dive around coral reefs.
Talk about paradise and if the desert island, which some are giving their choices for, is anything like the photo's I've seen, then you won't be disappointed.
Don't worry they were very safe as both males have the necessary sailing qualifications, plus the cat. has state of the art GPS navigation + radios along with computerised weather reports etc. plus those who went scuba diving, all have up to date dive certificates. There was no messing about as safety was paramount, esp with the boys.

  71. When the cost of supplying bottled water to people exceeds the cost of expanding and improving the infrastructure then the water companies might actually do something about it. Profits for owners/ shareholders will always take precedence..
There is also the problem of where you flood land to make additional reservoirs. I wonder if new houses when built could include some kind of underground tank for rainwater collection, together with a purification system for emergency use. Someone we knew who lived off grid in a very remote place had a UV light system that cleansed the water before use. I am thinking about this because of all the rainwater flowing down off the fields, with a stream running down our track flooding the lane and yesterday the normally small stream flowing on to the beach was an absolute torrent.

    1. Agree with you Janice.
We need to completely rethink housing provision in this country, and the first move would be to stop building on flood plains.

I managed a - for me currently - long walk with Lady down to the beach yesterday, and in the dry spell too.
We have various small rivers coming off the moor and running through the town and then out to the channel. There was a considerable increase in the output at the beach, but when up high in the Old Town - some houses four hundred years old - the sound of the streams was ferocious as the water descended in the channels in gardens and alongside the roads.

  72. Just a quick extra relating to my longwinded post of yesterday.

  73. Our water pressure problem continues, the pressure has been very low all day. I managed a trickle shower this morning and we haven't had to resort to the bottled water yet.
However, North West Water have done a good job of keeping us informed of what's going on and how we can access further supplies should we need it. They are providing regular updates and have also explained about the compensation which may be due.
The problem is due to a power outage at one of the pumping stations and they are having to feed water into the system from tankers, hence the low pressure.
